An obscure vocal gem from Prestige – featuring the lesser-known singer Mildred Anderson, working in a mixture of jazz and blues, with backing from the classic Eddie Lockjaw Davis combo! Mildred's got a laidback and bluesy approach that's a few more shades towards the blues than the work of Etta Jones – and although we might not normally go much for a singer of that nature, Anderson's style is really sweetened up here by the small combo backing – especially the organ work of Shirley Scott, which is one of the best aspects of the set! Sarah Vaughan's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. A bit smoother than Ben's earlier albums – but a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. A really beautiful record from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a record that's noteworthy not just for the really lovely vocals of Taeko Onuki but also for the keyboards and arrangements by Ryuichi Sakamoto! Here, Sakamoto is in a surprisingly soulful mode – working with great help from jazz musicians Shigeharu Mukai on trombone and Kazumi Watanabe on guitar, in a set of fusion-tinged backings that have a lot more in common with some of the Cali/Japanese R&B-tinged sets than they do with Sakamoto's later work to come! The sound is wonderful – as Taeko's Japanese lyrics glide wonderfully over the jazzy backings – on titles that include "Sargasso Sea", "Silent Screamer", "Summer Connection", and "Law of Nature". Mindblowing work from Minnie Riperton – her first solo album, cut at the end of the 60s, after a number of years of work with the group Rotary Connection. The album builds off the now famous sound of Rotary Connection – but takes it to the next level, with arch-baroque production by the great Charles Stepney – who couches Minnie's fantastic vocals in a suite of shimmering soulful tracks that mix strings, horns, jazzy piano, and slight touches of bouncing rhythms. The overall sound is impossible to describe – sort of a cross between Burt Bacharach on A&M, Scott Walker's 3rd album, and the sound of Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On. The album's pure genius all the way through – one of the highlights of the Chicago scene of the 60s – and proof that Riperton, Stepney, and crew were shooting for the outer limits of soul music!
