Lorez AlexandriaFor Swingers Only ... CD
Argo/Dusty Groove, 1963. Used ... $11.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskridge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road". ✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldLook Of Love ... LP
Philips, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Prime late 60s work from Dusty Springfield – an excellent American album that compiles some of her best singles from the UK! The sound is incredible – a blend of easy, soul, and tight British pop orchestrations – with arrangements handled by Pat Williams, Ivor Raymonde, Reg Guest, and Wally Stott. Dusty's voice never sounded better, and tracks include "The Look Of Love", "Give Me Time", "Come Back To Me", "Sunny", "What's It Gonna Be", "Welcome Home", and "Take Me For A Little While". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has ring & edge wear, a promo stamp, aging, and a strip of clear tape on the top seam.)

✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldOoooooweeee! ... LP
Philips, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
That title exclamation's an apt one – as the album's one of the first few from the great Dusty Springfield – whose sense of soul is already a thing of joy! The record bursts out with a punch-packing power that really rises Dusty up from her contemporaries – no tears jerked too long, no overdone humility – and instead this subtle energy that has her completely in control, even when opening up on more emotive lyrics – polished in the right ways, but never in the too-bright styles that UK pop was trapped in a few years before. The whole thing's years before Springfield recorded over on these shores, but you can already hear that direction – on titles that include "Once Upon A Time", "You Don't Own Me", "Now That You're My Baby", "If Wishes Could Be Kisses", "I Wanna Make You Happy", "Your Hurtin Kind Of Love", and "I Want Your Love Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album

A sparkling set of early work from the great Dusty Springfield! Tracks include "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "If It Don't Work Out", "Won't Be Long", "Oh No! Not My Baby", "It Was Easier To Hurt Him", "Long After Tonight Is All Over", and "I Had A Talk With My Man". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldBrand New Me (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dusty Springfield continues her exploration of American soul begun with the Dusty In Memphis album – but this time around, she's headed for Philly, where she gets to work with the Gamble & Huff production team! In a way, we like this work even better than Dusty's better-known Memphis recordings – because the gliding Philly groove of the time is a lot more fresh, and somehow doesn't sound as forced as some of Dusty's attempts at straighter, deeper soul. Arrangements are by Thom Bell and Roland Chambers – and rhythms are by a core combo that includes Vince Montana, Ugene Dozier, Ronald Baker, Earl Young, and Norman Harris. Tunes are all Gamble & Huff originals – and titles include "Lost", "Let Me In Your Way", "Never Love Again", "Let's Get Together Soon", "Silly Silly Fool", "Star Of My Show", and "Let's Talk It Over". Features 9 bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldFaithful (with bonus track) ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A never-heard third Dusty Springfield album for Atlantic Records – issued here for the first time ever, and very much in the same soulful spirit as her other records for the label! Springfield tackled Memphis and Philly soul on her previous two albums for Atlantic – and here, she hits a New York groove with producer Jeff Barry – who is equally well-suited to carry that special balance that Dusty brings to her music – that mix of British pop roots with a real understanding of the American scene – a quality that Springfield never had as strongly after these early years. Titles are a varied lot, but all come together with a really unified feel, thanks to Dusty's strengths as a performer – and tunes include "Haunted", "Someone Who Cares", "Natchez Trace", "You've Got A Friend", "All The King's Horses", and "I'll Be Faithful". Gil Scott-HeronWinter In America (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Strata East/Culture Factory, 1974. New Copy ... On April 20, 2024
A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever! The record has a completely sophisticated jazzy approach – one that's miles ahead from even Gil's previous work on Flying Dutchman, and which shows him to be one of the most distinctive and emotive vocalists in soul and jazz over the past 25 years. The album contains the monster dancefloor track "The Bottle", which went on to be a huge hit in many versions – but it's also got loads of gentle, fragile songs (the kind of work by Gil that we like the best, and which show him as a deeply emotional and complicated artist, with a richness that still yearns to be tapped fully. Classics include "Peace Go With You Brother" and the original version of "Your Daddy Loves You". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 21. Joe Williams & Lambert, Hendricks & RossSing Along With Basie ... CD
Roulette (Japan), 1958. Used ... $14.99 19.99
One of the more obscure albums by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – a session of Basie tunes, performed with backing by the Count, plus additional lead vocals by Joe Williams, the voice most closely associated with the Basie group at the time! The style is similar to the trio's Sing A Song Of Basie album for ABC, but handled here with a bit more of an edge, and a rougher, more freewheeling groove that's a better fit for the great Basie sound of the late 50s – a great adaptation of the groove by Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross! The record's a nice sometimes-overlooked chapter in the excellent Count Basie run on Roulette – and titles include "Every Tub", "Rusty Dusty Blues", "The King", "Shorty George", and "Let Me See". CD

✨✧ Geraldine De HaasGeraldine De Haas ... LP
Progressive/Elsa Rella, Late 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An interesting little record from Geraldine DeHaas – a Chicago-based jazz vocalist who's probably best known to Dusty Groove customers as Geraldine Bey, which was her name when she was part of the legendary Andy & The Bey Sisters! This record bears few traces of her earlier work, and is more in kind of a "classy jazzy soul" mode, ala 70s work by Marlena Shaw. The arrangements are by Tom Washington, who did a bunch of Chicago soul work for Brunswick, and Bob Perna. The set list leans heavily to Paul Anka numbers, but Geraldine actually makes them sound pretty decent. Titles include "Keep On Walkin", "Wheels Of Life", "Everything's Been Changed", "We Made It Happen", and "Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAm I Dreaming – 80 Brit Girl Sounds Of The 60s (3CD set) ... CD
RPM (UK), 1960s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing like 60s British female pop at all – a genre that's very much unto itself, and which seems to draw equally from roots in rock, pop, and soul! Most of the cuts here have a punch that's different than the softer, sometimes sadder tones of American girl pop of the time – a brashness that's often augmented by really great production, and a romping groove that really brings out a soulful current in the vocal delivery! And while you may know this style famously from singers who crossed over here – like Dusty Springfield or Petula Clark – there's a huge amount of work here by much lesser-known acts, which makes this 80 track collection a stunning introduction to this huge world of music. The book alone is maybe worth the price – as it offers track-by-track notes on every single cut – sometimes with record scans or photos, and always with release information too – documenting some really fab sounds by singers who include Jacky, Samantha Jones, Jan Dalton, Glenda Collins, Lorraine Child, Greta Ann, Billie Davis, Antoinette, Kiki Dee, Gillian Hills, Cheryl St Clair, Adrienne Poster, Jacki Martin, Lulu, Barry St John, The Exceptions, and lots lots more!
