✨✧ Brigitte FontaineBrigitte Fontaine (1972) ... LP
Saravah (France), 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album by this enigmatic French singer – one of her first truly experimental albums! The record differs from some of her other albums quite a bit – and has a very strange mix of styles that go from straight ahead (only a track or two), to wildly experimental – very much in the best genre-breaking mode that was going on with the Saravah Records scene in the post-1968 years. Although longtime partner Areski did contribute to this album, the record also features work by Saravah labelmate Jacques Higelin, plus French jazz players like Georges Arvanitas and Philippe Mate – all of whom really help bring some fresh flavors to the record! Great stuff all 'round, and titles include "Brigitte", "Moi Aussi", "Eros", "Marcelle", "Premier Juillet", and "Le Dragon". (French, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Ella FitzgeraldClap Hands, Here Comes Charlie (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1961. New Copy Gatefold ... $36.99 38.99
A great small combo set from Ella Fitzgerald – and a record that maybe has a bit more bite than some of her Songbook sessions from the time! The combo's a great one – with excellent piano from Lou Levy, balanced with guitar work from Herb Ellis – a pair whose chromatic contributions really resonate wonderfully with the vocal range of Ella – especially as the singer is hitting that 60s stretch when she seemed to find an even more expressive tone than in earlier years! Other players include Joe Mondragon on bass and Gus Johnson on drums – no other players at all, a nice lean set – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Cry Me A River", "This Year's Kisses", "Music Goes Round & Round", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "My Reverie", and "You're My Thrill". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Verve Acoustic Sounds series – heavy cover and vinyl!)

Vicky Lane with Pete CandoliI Swing For You ... LP
RCA, 1959. Very Good ... $14.99
A pretty weird one! Vicky Lane's always been one of the more dramatic singers from RCA's 50s gal catalog – and she's working here with LA jazzer Pete Condoli, who conducts a small jazz combo with lots of added percussion! The style's halfway between straight vocals and hi-fi type numbers with lots of added instrumental twists – and players on the set include Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles, Alvin Stoller, and Joe Mondragon, plus percussionists Milt Holland, Gene Estes, Larry Bunker, and Lou Singer. Tracks include "I Love You", "My Heart Stood Still", "My Romance", "Our Very Own", "The Trolley Song", "The Song Is You", and "Love Isn't Born". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Living Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear and aging, some light marks from price sticker removal, and a small sticker oscuring some marker in front.)

✨✧ Audrey MorrisVoice Of Audrey Morris ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
The voice of Audrey Morris is a great one – sweet, but also sad too – but never in a too-sentimental way, and perfect for the gentler touch of the Bethlehem label! Audrey's working here with backings penned by Marty Paich – who also plays celeste on the album, with a group that features Stu Williamson on trumpet, Bill Pitman on guitar, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Irv Cottler or Alvin Stoller on drums. Paich uses a bit of strings on the date – never too much, but just enough to underscore the sadness of the bluer tunes, and create a bit of softness on a few of the ballads – all in a way that's never too dramatic, and which always gives way to Audrey's vocals when they slide into the mix – preserving the intimate quality that always makes for her best sort of setting. The track selection is great – far more unusual than the typical Bethlehem vocal date, with some great late nite numbers that include "If Love Were All", "I Never Mention Your Name", "It's Always You", "What More Can A Woman Do", "Blue Turning Gray Over You", "I Go For That", and "I Wonder What Became Of Me".
