✨✧ Diahann CarrollPorgy & Bess ... CD
United Artists/DRG, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A sultry set of vocals – Diahann backed by the Andre Previn Trio, running through mellow versions of tracks from Gershwin's Porgy & Bess. Although this was one of countless albums to come out in the late 50s, designed to coincide with the release of the film, the feeling here is quite intimate and laidback – not nearly the "cash in" effort of other records at the time. Titles include "Oh I Can't Sit Down", "Porgy I Is Your Woman", "Summertime", "There's A Boat That's Leavin Soon For New York", and "I Loves You Porgy". CD
(Out of print and still sealed.)

✨✧ Jackie & RoyBeautiful Sea – Songs Of Sun, Sand & Sea ... CD
DRG, 1998. Used ... $2.99
A later set by Jackie & Roy, but still plenty darn great – and not nearly as hokey as you might expect from the title! All tracks are sea-themed – but the range of work is surprisingly sophisticated, and perfectly illustrates the ever-deep quality of the Jackie & Roy sound, even at a time when it would be easy for the pair to fall into simple cliches of their older work. As before, the pair display a wonderful ear for a compelling tune – and draw here on work from traditional sources, as well as the hipper end of the jazz songwriting spectrum – work by Tommy Wolf, Mark Murphy, Dave Frishberg, and even Herbie Hancock. The set includes a great vocalese take on "Dolphin Dance", the original number "Full Moon", a slight reworking of "Song Of The Boy & The Dolphins", and the tracks "Boats", "The Shining Sea", "Moon Over Miami", "Home By The Sea", "Zanzibar", and "Sand In My Shoes". ✨✧ Diahann CarrollMagic Of Diahann Carroll – With The Andre Previn Trio/Live From The Persian Room ... CD
DRG, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 early albums from the lovely Diahann Carroll – both done in a very classy vocal style! The first 12 tracks on the CD feature work from an album that Carroll cut with the Andre Previn trio – done in a lightly laidback mode that has Diahann singing cooly and intimately on tunes that include "Spring Is Here", "I Should Care", "Gingerbread Boy", "Change Of Heart", "Glad To Be Unhappy", and "Nobody's Heart". The Persian Room set is a bit more upbeat – recorded with the orchestra of Peter Matz, in a style that pushes Carroll into more emotional depth, and which also gets a bit showy at times. Titles on that set includes "Misty", "Shopping Around", "Goody Goody", "Heat Wave", "All Or Nothing At All", and a few medley tracks. CD
