Tony BennettCloud 7 ... CD
Columbia, 1955. Used ... $4.99
One of Tony Bennett's greatest jazz sessions – a sublime mid 50s outing that features small combo backing from guitarist Chuck Wayne! The setting is extremely spare for the time – a real contrast from the higher drama of some of Tony's 50s chart hits, and the kind of a record that really lets him open up with the warmer vocal tones that could sometimes be lost on the pop numbers. Wayne's guitar is great too, really chromatic and moody, bringing out the darker colors in the tunes nicely. Other players include Dave Schildkraut on alto and Al Cohn on tenor – and titles include "Darn That Dream", "My Reverie", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "My Heart Tells Me", "Old Devil Moon", and "Love Letters". Freddy ColeOne More Love Song/Right From The Heart ... CD
Decca/Vocalion (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Two rare European records from Freddy Cole – best known to most of us in the US as a jazz singer! One More Love Song is surprisingly soulful set from Freddy – quite different than some of the straighter jazz vocals he's cut over the years! This rare gem was recorded in The Netherlands in the mid 70s – and features backings from Jerry Van Rooyen and Tony Noite, both of whom mix jazzy inflections with fuller orchestrations – helping to bring Cole's rich background into a whole new light! Freddy's voice still has that wonderful trademark rasp – familiar to, yet quite different than brother Nat – and the use of some smoother soul modes makes for a really great contrast. Titles include "One More Love Song", "I Loved You", "I Need You So", "Still Wanna Be With You", "Isn't She Lovely", and "Here Is Where Your Love Belongs". Right From The Heart has Freddy Cole taking on a mix of adult ballads and some groovier numbers – set to arrangements by John Gally, Hennie Bekker, and Steve Gray – and recorded in London with a nicely mature feel. There's a bit of polish to the production, especially on the more upbeat cuts – but the mellower numbers still have Cole singing in a great old school mode. Titles include "The Girl From The Piano Bar", "To Be With You", "Teach Me Tonight", "Summer Love", "Somewhere Down The Line", and "Right From The Start". CD

✨✧ Blossom DearieBlossom Dearie Soubrette – Sings Broadway Hit Songs ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1960. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful treasure from Blossom's years at Verve – oddly tagged as a "hits" collection, but more an album of lesser-known Broadway tunes – arranged with a full and swinging sound by the great Russ Garcia! Garcia's backings make a nice contrast to Blossom's smaller combo backing on other Verve sets – and give the record a groovy feel that brings out all the warmth and humor in the tunes. The album's got some of our favorite early work by Blossom – and titles include "The Physician", "Love Is The Reason", "Buckle Down Winsocki", "The Gentleman Is A Dope", "Always True To You In My Fashion", "Napoleon", and the classic "Rhode Island Is Famous For You". Ella FitzgeraldHello Love ... CD
Verve, 1957/1959. Used ... $3.99
Ella swings it nicely with the orchestra of Frank DeVol on this set of standards and classics – an overlooked treat from her late 50s years – and a set that's overflowing with great little numbers! The album's got a sound that's lush at times, but never overly emotive – thanks to Ella's keen ear for jazz in the tunes, which works strongly against DeVol's sometimes tendency to overarrange. The album's a nice contrast to some of Ella's Songbook work from the time – and titles include "You Go To My Head", "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year", "Lost In A Fog", "So Rare", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Tenderly". CD

Mark MurphyOnce To Every Heart (Japanese version with bonus track) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 2005. Used ... $18.99
Easily the greatest album that vocalist Mark Murphy has recorded in years – and a surprising departure from a lot of his recent work! Murphy did the album in collaboration with German trumpeter Til Bronner – a player we mostly know for his own smoothly soulful, and often-grooving albums. Yet here, Bronner's got both himself and Murphy working in a lush mode that recalls the spirit of 60s sessions arranged by Claus Ogerman or Don Sebesky – Bronner on trumpet with a core jazz group, augmented by larger orchestrations on most tracks – and recorded in a spaciously sublime way that often has Murphy's vocals hanging beautifully in mid-air! There's a breathtaking depth to the album that gets past some of the simple tracks and over-tread territory of other recent Murphy albums – almost as if the album's the "classic" that Mark never got to record back in the day, but which is finally coming out now, 50 years into his career in music! A real contrast to the recent Mark Murphy dancefloor work – such as his vocals with Five Corners Quintet – and featuring the originals "I Know You From Somewhere" and "Our Game" – plus standards "It Never Entered My Mind", "I'm Through With Love", "When I Fall In Love/My One & Only Love", and "Love Is Here To Stay". Japanese pressing features the bonus track "Detour Ahead". CD

✨✧ Blossom DearieDiva Series – Blossom Dearie ... CD
Verve, 1950s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Magical work from one of our favorite singers ever – the lovely Blossom Dearie, a completely unique vocal talent! Blossom's got this fragile, willowy style that's every bit like her name – but she's also a hip singer with a real edge and a great sense of humor, and her work is always a great contrast in styles that always keeps things interesting. This 16 track set pulls together some wonderful numbers from her years at Verve – including "I'm Hip", "Rhode Island Is Famous For You", "It's Love", "They Say It's Spring", "I Walk A Little Faster", and "Plus Je T'Embrasse". ✨✧ Ran Blake & Jeanne LeeYou Stepped Out Of A Cloud ... CD
Owl/EMI, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Spare and beautiful work from pianist Ran Blake and vocalist Jeanne Lee – a record that follows a similar format to some of Blake's other sessions with singers, and which presents Lee's vocals in a powerfully unstripped mode! The set was recorded live in Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory of Music – with an echoey, "room" heavy style that really offsets the intimacy of the style. Blake's piano notes burst out and bounce around with stark qualities and strong sound – but Lee's vocals are close up in the mix, with less of the echo of the keys – in a breathy contrast that's really striking. A few tunes are original lyrics by Jeanne – including "Last Days/Hands", "Vanguard", and "I Like Your Style" – and other titles include "You Go To My Head", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "The Wind", "Where Are You", and "Corcovado". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldLive At Mister Kelly's (previously unreleased) ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A real treasure from Ella Fitzgerald – a huge batch of previously unreleased live recordings from the 50s, all done at the legendary Chicago nightclub Mister Kelly's! However, the set's noteworthy not just because it's rare, but also because it offers Ella up in a relaxed, unfettered setting – a nice contrast to the smoother sound of the Verve studio albums of the time – or some of the more hyped-up festival appearances too – and instead, there's a personal, intimate sound here that's quite wonderful throughout, and which has really re-ignited our love of Ella's music! The sound quality is great – no dodgy crowd recording here – and the backing is by a trio that includes Lou Levy on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. 2CD set is divided up into a "main show" and a "late show" – and titles include "Perdido", "Your Red Wagon", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Bewitched", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Joe Williams Blues", "Witchcraft", "In The Wee Small Hours", "Exactly Like You", "S'Wonderful", and "My Funny Valentine". ✨✧ Charles Mingus with Jackie Paris, The Gordons, etcDebut Rarities Vol 4 ... CD
Debut/OJC, 1952/1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very rare slice of work from Charles Mingus – sides recorded for his Debut label that featured vocalists in the lead! Backing is by Mingus-led combos on all tracks – but the presence of singers makes for a great change in the music – not a sleepy, torch jazz vocal style – but much more in the inventive style of singing that would crop on on a handful of Mingus dates from later years – heard here in much more experimental modes. Jackie Paris' work is an especially great revelation – as it's a real contrast to some of his straighter later stuff – but The Gordons are great too, the vocal group from which Honi Gordon sprang to do her solo album for Prestige. Bob Benton sings on a few numbers too – and other players include Lee Konitz on alto, Paige Brook on flute, Hank Jones on piano, and Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Portrait", "I've Lost My Love", "Precognition", "Make Believe", "Paris In Blue", "Montage", "You & Me", "Cupid", "Can You Blame Me", and "Bebopper". ✨✧ Sarah Vaughan & Her TrioSarah Vaughan At Mister Kelly's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mercury, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Sarah Vaughan's best albums from the 50s – a swinging live set caught at Chicago's Mister Kelly's night club – and recorded with very small combo backing! The album's a great contrast to some of Sarah's more fully arranged sets of the era – and it features piano from Jimmy Jones, bass from Richard Davis, and drums from Roy Haynes – all served up in a great blend of sensitive modes on the ballads, and more swinging styles on the upbeat numbers. There's a bit more of the latter, given the swinging feel of the set. The best part of this CD, though, is that it adds 11 extra tracks to the original album – for a whopping 20 tracks of beautiful live jazz vocals. Titles include "September In The Rain", "Alone", "Dancing In The Dark", "Lucky In Love", "Dream", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Just A Gigolo". CD

✨✧ Lorez AlexandriaFor Swingers Only ... CD
Argo/Dusty Groove, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskridge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road". ✨✧ Don PaulinMe & My Papagayo (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/Sonorama (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wild little record from this little-known American singer – a set recorded in Germany at the end of the 60s, with a compelling mix of jazz, bossa, psychedelic, and funky touches! Don's got this weird sort of raspy vocal approach a times – a rumbling style of putting over a lyric that's a nice contrast to the sweeter blend of jazz and Latin instrumentation used in the backdrop! The set features some wonderful work from key talents on the German groove scene at the time – including guitar from Sigi Schwab, and arrangements from Ingfried Hoffmann – both of whom contributed a number of original tunes to the set! Titles include "Danza", "Titicaca", "Ananas", "Inca Uyu", "Blue Bossa", "Duerme Negrito", "Sugar Cane", and "Charangito". Also features 2 bonus cuts – "On The Road Again" and "In My Fantasy". CD
