Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". (Soul, Vocalists) CD

✨✧ Jeannie Cheatham & Jimmy CheathamSweet Baby Blues ... LP
Concord, 1984. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweetly stepping session of bluesy jazz vocals from Jeannie Cheatham – outwardly a trad-oriented record, but done here with some nice light west coast touches that really capture the best of the Concord groove of the early 80s. There's a gentle swing to the tracks that reminds us of some of the Ernestine Anderson Concord work from the period, and Jeannie plays a bit of piano as well as sings – and is joined by Jimmy on bass trombone, Red Callender on bass and tuba, and Charles McPherson on alto sax. Titles include "Brand New Blues Blues", "I Got A Mind To Ramble", "Cherry Red", "Roll Em Pete", and "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kurt Elling1619 Broadway – The Brill Building Project ... CD
Concord, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kurt Elling turns his talents towards the music of the Brill Building – completely transforming a host of pop and soul classics in the process! The songs are familiar, but the music's got all the careful balance of some of Elling's best records in recent years – definitely jazz all the way through, with sparkling arrangements that really work beautifully with Kurt's unique vocals – in ways that push these tunes way past their roots, and show how strongly Elling can bring new feelings out of a song – even with numbers that are much more iconic than his usual fare. Titles include "So Far Away", "Shoppin For Clothes", "A House Is Not A Home", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "On Broadway", "Come Fly With Me", and "You Send Me". CD

✨✧ Kurt EllingNightmoves ... CD
Concord, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first non-Blue Note album from Kurt Elling – and a great fresh start for one of the greatest jazz singers working today! Kurt hasn't sounded this fluid or confident in years – and while we expected that Concord Records might have put him in a slicker, smoother setting, the record's actually nicely stripped-down – mostly recorded with small combo acoustic jazz instrumentation, plus some very slight strings on just a few tracks. Elling's got a sense of vocal presence that we'd accord to a rare few – Jon Hendricks, Michael Franks, and Mark Murphy – and like those singers, he's got a wonderful way of putting himself on the line, but without going too far – never hitting emotions or notes that are too easy, and always reminding us that he's a jazz singer first and foremost. Titles include "Nightmoves", "Tight", "Where Are You My Love", "I Like The Sunrise", "A New Body & Soul", "The Waking", and "The Sleepers". CD

✨✧ Dave FrishbergLookin' Good (Getting Some Fun Out Of Life/Let's Eat Home) ... CD
Concord, 1977/1990. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dave Frishberg's always getting some fun out of life – given the way he pens these witty little tunes, and sings them with a hell of a lot of charm! And this album's one to feature Frishberg at all his charming best – still with the jaunty, edgey qualities we love so much in Oaklahoma Toad, but turned back more towards more traditional jazz elements too – all set nicely into a small combo jazz mode, with help from Bob Findley on trumpet and Marshall Royal on alto – both horn players who give the album a fleshed-out feel that's a nice change from some of Dave's more piano/vocal-based records. A number of the tunes are instrumental – with Frishberg on piano – and titles include "Lotus Blossom", "Dear Bix", "Violet Blue", "Old Man Harlem", "Save It Pretty Mama", "Alligator Crawl", and "In A Mist". ✨✧ Jazzmeia HornLove & Liberation ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We really loved Jazzmeia Horn on her debut, but this time around she really knocks it out of the park – to a point where we're ready to list her among our top few favorite jazz vocalists – a short list that includes Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Shirley Horn! We're not easy with praise like that – but in this case, it's very well-deserved – as the record is one of those jazz vocal sets that comes along once in a blue moon – all original material by the singer, handled with a soulful, soaring style that's made even better by the small combo on the set – a great group that features Victor Gould on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Josh Evans on trumpet, Jamison Ross on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Horn's got an ability to both deliver a straight lyric with just the right mix of soul and emotion, and take off on jazz-styled flights as well – and her sense of inflection is amazing – at once very old school, like few "jazz" singers can do these days – but also instantly personal and contemporary. Titles include "Free Your Mind", "Out The Window", "Only You", "When I Say", "Legs & Arms", "Reflections Of My Heart", and "I Thought About You". CD

Jamison RossAll For One ... CD
Concord, 2018. Used ... $4.99
Jamison Ross is a drummer at heart, but he's also turning into a hell of a singer who seems ready to help the music of New Orleans find a great new space of its own – as he works here in a sweet small combo set that mixes his voice with grooves that draw together strong currents of classic funk, soul, and jazz! Ross takes up a few classics on the set, but he also sounds even better on his own music – these new songs that bring a sense of personality that we didn't hear on his previous record, while still balancing things out with those funkier moments we know in his music too. Titles include "Unspoken", "Mellow Good Time", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Away", "Tears & Questions", "Safe In The Arms Of Love", and "Keep On". CD

✨✧ Esperanza Spalding12 Little Spells (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
12 sublime spells from Esperanza Spaulding – with 4 more spells added to the mix for the physical release of the album! The record's got Esperanza really blowing us away – not content to just stay in the safer territory that she virtually invented a few years back, and which could sustain her entire career – and instead coming across with a mode that's more complicated, more edgey, and more message-oriented than ever before – all awash with a pastiche of sonic colors that's echoed by the image on the cover! Spaulding's vocals just seem to get better and better as the years go on – but she also leads strongly with her basslines on most numbers too – while the production really lets some of the more cosmic-styled elements flow around the edges. Titles include "12 Little Spells", "To Tide Us Over", "Til The Next Full", "Thang", "You Have To Dance", "Now Know", "All Limbs Are", "Readying To Rise", and "Dancing The Animal". Bonus "spells" include "Lest We Forget", "How To", "Move Many", and "Ways Together". (Neo Soul, Vocalists) CD

Maxine Sullivan With The Scott Hamilton QuintetUptown ... CD
Concord, 1985. Used ... $8.99
One of the greatest records we've ever heard from the legendary Maxine Sullivan – and a set that's got a bit more of a contemporary jazz vibe overall! The set's done with the group of tenorist Scott Hamilton – a great player to choose for a session like this, as he's one with a very classic sound in his horn, which further deepens the soul of the record – while also balancing it with the more contemporary generation in which Hamilton's spent most of his career. The recording style is relatively laidback and open – just small group swing, but with more mature, modern moments of expression – on titles that include "You Were Meant For Me", "I Thought About You", "Goody Goody", "By Myself", "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues", and "Just One Of Those Things".
