✨✧ Billy StewartBilly Stewart Teaches Old Standards New Tricks ... LP
Chess, 1966. Very Good ... $3.99
This was the follow-up LP to Billy Stewart's huge single of Gershwin's "Summertime", and it's got a similar approach of "funky soul takes on American pop music standards". "Summertime" isn't on the album, but all the tracks have a sound that falls in the same mode – with fantastic vocal pyrotechnics from Billy, and tight arrangements by Phil Wright that both groove hard, but have a sophisticated classy edge. Titles include "Temptation", "Who Can I Turn To", "Let's Fall In Love", "Exodus", "Fly Me to the Moon", and "Secret Love". Also includes a great version of "Every Day I Have the Blues", with a nice hard funky drum intro! (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing.)

Clea BradfordHer Point Of View ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Very Good+ ... $28.99
Clea was one of a host of hip female singers that Chess was trying to bring up in the late 60s – and although she was less successful than bigger stars like Fontella Bass or Marlena Shaw, this album's in very much the same mode as some of the best Cadet female soul, with arrangements by Richard Evans that cover the same range of styles as Shaw's best early work. The album kicks off with the funky cut "My Love's A Monster", then rolls into hip jazzy versions of "Summer Time", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Spring Is Here" – and also includes two originals, "I Need Love" and "The View From Up Here", both with a strong stepping groove! LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue fade label stereo pressing. Cover & label have a small drillhole.)

Terry CallierNew Folk Sound Of Terry Callier (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige/Craft, 1964. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Terry Callier's first album – recorded in 1964 when he was a wee teen hanging around Chicago's folk scene! As the title indicates, the album's definitely got a folk-styled sound – but also as the "new" implies, it's got a sound all it's own, fresh and free – and that sound is the genius that is Terry Callier! This is very stripped down material, very dark and brooding – a good chance to hear Terry before he hit the Chess studios and they backed him up with a lot of orchestrations (although we love the orchestrations, too.) The material has a soulful spiritual feel, and is sung with a lot of passion over acoustic guitar. Think of Nina Simone's folksier stuff from the same time, if you need a reference. Tracks include "900 Miles", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "It's About Time", "Promenade In Green", and "I'm A Drifter". This expanded edition includes bonus tracks – "Be My Woman", "Jack O' Diamonds", "It's About Time", and "The Golden Apples Of The Sun" – plus alternate takes of "Promenade In Green" and "900 Miles". (Soul, Vocalists) CD

✨✧ Stan Getz/Jimmy RowlesPeacocks ... LP
CBS, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the Stan Getz catalog of the 70s – a session of mostly spare duets with pianist Jimmy Rowles, done in a way that really breaks from the format of Stan's other work of the time! Rowles here has a raspy warmth that brings out new voicings in Getz's tenor – an earthiness that comes through especially well on the half of the album that features only Stan and Jimmy playing together alone, but which still shines on the few other tracks that feature the bass of Buster Williams and drums of Elvin Jones expanding the group. 2 short tracks feature only solo piano, and Rowles also sings on a number of the album's tracks, in that breathy mode of his that rarely got captured this well on record – and one other track features Jon Hendricks leading a vocal quartet through a rendition of "The Chess Players". Other titles include "It'll Never Be The Same", "Body & Soul", "What Am I Here For", "The Hour Of Parting", "The Peacocks", "Rose Marie", and "Serenade To Sweden". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover appears to have been sighned by Jimmy Rowles! Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)
