Babs GonzalesTales Of Manhattan – The Cool Philosophy Of Babs Gonzales ... CD
Jaro/Fresh Sound (Spain), Late 50s. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums ever by the consummate jazz hipster – Babs Gonzales! Babs was part singer, part poet, and part philosophy – working in a jive-heavy style that was filled with inside jokes on the New York jazz scene of the postwar years – and peopled with odd characters from that scene, including musicians, hustlers, hookers, and small-time crooks. Babs speaks and sings on the set, backed by arrangements from Melba Liston, played by a small combo that includes Kenny Burrell, Peck Morrison, and Roy Haynes. The whole thing's great – one of the best blends of hipster jive and jazz ever – and titles include "Dem Resolution Liars", "The Hat Box Chicks", "Dem Jive New Yorkers", "The Squares", and "The Cool Cat's Philosophy". Babs GonzalesTales On The Famous – Guess Who? ... LP
Expubidence, Late 50s. Very Good ... $19.99
One of Bab's rare LPs from the late 50's, when he wasn't doing as much recording for the big labels, and instead was self-releasing crazy material like this. This is a live set, with some musical accompaniment, in which Babs "tells all" about some of the jazz greats. He's changed the names to protect the far from innocent, so Art Blakey becomes Smart Snakely, and Illinois Jacquet becomes Michigan Coat – and Babs' indictments are pretty severe. Apart from being a great funny bit of Babs Gonzales material, this LP is also an amazing insight to the reputations that some of the biggest jazz players had at the time. Great stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink label pressing with deep groove. Cover is stained on 4 inches along the spine, with some flaking and peeling, and split seams held with pieces of clear tape.)

✨✧ Babs GonzalesExpubident World Of Babs Speedy Gonzales ... LP
Expubident, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums ever from singer Babs Gonzales – one of the coolest vocalists to ever hit the bebop scene! The record is issued on Babs' own label, and lists Clark Terry, Melba Liston, Charlie Rouse, Johnny Griffin, Horace Parlan, and Ray Nance on the cover – although we're not sure if they're all on the set. You can definitely here some strong Nance-like violin work soloing on side b – a nice change for Babs. Side one is more swinging – and titles include "Cool Cookin", "Le Continental", "Me", "Lullaby Of Doomed", "Beginning Of The End", and "Babs Mood For Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is stained and flaky on the bottom 3 inches, but also appears to have been signed by the artist on front.)

✨✧ Slim GaillardLaughing In Rhythm – Best Of The Verve Years ... CD
Verve, 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Insanely great work from Slim Gaillard, the self-styled LA hipster who rose to prominence in the wartime blues and jazz scene, and who continued to wow audiences for years with his unique blend of hipster jazz! This CD features some of Slim's best work – recorded for Verve in the 50s, and painfully unavailable for years. Slim sings in a voice that's all his own – mixing bluesy crooning with scatting and plenty of talking in his own language of "vout". Consider him a west coast version of Babs Gonzales, and you've got part of the picture – but you'll need this set to fill in all the spaces. Titles include "You Goofed", "Arabian Boogie", "Tip Light", "Serenade To A Poodle", "Babalu Orooney", "Laughing In Rhythm", "Chicken Rhythm", and the complete "Opera In Vout". CD
