Billie HolidaySongs & Conversations ... LP
Paramount, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
An incredible record from Billie Holiday – and not really a proper sort of "album" at all! Instead, the set features the posthumous release of tapes from sessions recorded with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Artie Shapiro – tracks that feature Billie singing in a looser mode than on Verve, but also talking a fair bit too! The conversation is what really makes the record – as it shows a bad-rapping Billie who's often a lot more self-possessed than you'd guess from the sadder sound of her classic recordings. Her voice is easily recognizable, but the subject matter is often quite surprising – and surprisingly well-recorded. Titles include "Rappin About Jimmy Rowles", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Just Friends", "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", and "Everything Happens To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Morgana KingNew Beginnings ... LP
Paramount, 1973. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A completely hip little record from Morgana King – one that takes her amazing voice, and sets it amidst some expansive arrangements that push past jazz to include some trippier 70s styles! The whole session's got a nice mix of the mellow and baroque – with a subtle funky undercurrent at points, and definitely a fair bit more soul than we're used to hearing from Morgana! Arrangements are by Torrie Zito and Bob James – and the production often compresses the vocals in a really cool way – sliding them amidst the instrumentation with a haunting quality that's hard to describe in words, but which makes the album one of King's most breathtaking ever! The back cover has Morgana getting props from Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Paul Williams, and Kenny Rankin – all names we can certainly trust – and titles include a great version of "We Could Be Flying", "All In All", "A Song For You", "Like A Seed", and "The Sands Of Time & Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Morgana KingEverything Must Change ... LP
Muse, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Sublime work from Morgana King – a set that continues the unique mellow vocal tradition begun on her Reprise sides of the 60s, and continued strongly well into the 70s on Paramount and other labels. The setting's somewhat spare here – a small group with guitar, electric piano, bass, drums, and percussion – all used nicely alongside King's vocals in a warm, pillowy quality that glides with a gentle groove and a great sense of grace and presence. The tracks are mosly mellow, and Morgana delivers those great King-styled vocals we love so much – an approach that's unlike any other singer we can think of, and which is right at home here. Titles include "Everything Must Change", "Give Me The Simple Life", "Love Song", "Out Of Nowhere", and "This Masquerade". LP, Vinyl record album
