Lee HazlewoodMovin' On ... CD
Polydor/Ace (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
One of the rarest Lee Hazlewood albums ever – a mid 70s set recorded for Polydor in Sweden, and one that represents a really unique chapter in Lee's career overseas! At times, the album's got a very strong country feel – more so than even other Hazlewood records, which always had a bit of twang – yet at other points, the record moves into more familiar vocal work – recalling some of the modes that Lee had laid down on his best work of the late 60s. Not all songs are originals, but Lee definitely makes all the music his own – and the arrangements by David Whitaker and Lars Samuelson move around in good ways to match the spirit of Hazlewood's mood on each tune. This reissue features some really great notes – filled with the kind of personal recollections that make Lee's life seem like it was always a blast to live – and titles include "The Rising Star", "Come On Home To Me", "It's For My Dad", "Paris Bells", "Hello Saturday Morning", "Wait Till Next Year", "LA Lady", "I've Got To Be Moving", "Mother Country Music", and a great version of "It Was A Very Good Year". Monica LewisSing It To The Marines ... CD
Verve/Polydor (Japan), 1957. Used ... $14.99 18.99
The cover of this one might make the album one of the campiest records on Verve – but the session's a surprisingly great one, with a straighter vocal approach than you'd guess! Monica's got a really sweet vocal style – a bit sexy, and certainly adult – arranged here with some nice jazzy touches from Frank DeVol, working in backings that are a lot hipper than those we remember him using with other singers from the time. Monica handles herself like a big girl in front of all those Marines – all-woman, but clearly not giving it away to the first man in blue who walks down the street. Titles include "Blues In The Night", "Miss You", "Rough Ridin", "All Alone", "The Song Is You", "Undecided", and "I'll Be Seeing You". CD

Rare SilkNew Weave ... CD
Polydor, 1983. Used ... $19.99 24.99
A way hipper record than you'd guess from a group with a name like "Rare Silk" – and some of the best group jazz vocalese recorded in the 80s! The group is a quartet of voices – 3 female, 1 male – and they come together in a style that's far less hokey than most of the other practictioners of this mode at the time – a timeless sort of hipster approach that's really got a lot of the same sort of energy as Mark Murphy on Muse! Backing is small combo jazz on all numbers, with some really sweet keyboards on a few of the best tracks – and titles include versions of Flip Nunez's "Happying", Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay", Richie Cole's "New York Afternoon", Chick Corea's "Spain", Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar", and Eddie Harris' "You Know It's Wrong". Kazumi YasuiYasui Kazumi No Eru – Pi Zu Zu ... LP
Polydor/Lawson (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99 58.99
A really lovely little record from Japan – one that's got some slight elements of bossa nova in the backings, but also some European elements too – with a moody vibe that's really wonderful, and very much in keeping from the image on the cover! There's a strong current of melancholy that really makes the whole set shine – and the light vocals of Kazumi Yasui are somewhere in the late 60s territory of Nico and Astrud Gilberto, and almost given some Verve-like backings on the record from Kawachi Kunio, Makoto Kawaguchi, and others! Vocals and song titles are all in Japanese, but the record's got this universal appeal that's very different than so many other records of this type from the time. (Japanese, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – heavy cover and obi!)

✨✧ GimmicksGimmicks Of Sweden ... LP
Polydor (Sweden), 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest records cut by this incredibly groovy combo! The Gimmicks are a sweet pop harmony combo from Sweden – in a style that's a lot like Brasil 66 or Bossa Rio – and like the work of those two in the early 70s, this 1972 set shows The Gimmicks expanding their sound a lot, picking up influences from 70s LA pop, electric samba from Brazil, and some of the hipper styles of European pop-oriented grooves. The record's got a sparkling electric sound and some really wonderful harmonies – and tracks include "Que Maravilha", "Once I Loved", "Somewhere In The Hills", "Colours Of Love", "It's Too Late Baby", "Ye Me Le", "Pais Tropical", and "Stone Slipper Cindy". ✨✧ Blossom DearieWhisper For You (That's The Way I Want To Be/Give Him The Ooh La La) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very cool! This CD is a compilation of 2 albums by the groovy Blossom Dearie – one rare, and one not so rare. The rare one's Blossom's 1970 record cut for Fontana UK, entitled That's Just The Way I Want To Be, and featuring some amazing Brit easy arrangements that are right out of the Sound Gallery/Sound Spectrum scene! The style of the record is very different than others by Blossom, and the swinging groovy orchestrations are a perfect accompaniment for her lively sing-song voice. Titles on that one include "Long Daddy Green", "Inside A Silent Tear", "That's Just The Way I Want To Be", and the great "I Like London In The Rain". Plus, the CD also includes the record Give Him The Ooh-La-La, which was issued over here by Verve, and which also adds 9 extra cuts to the CD, for a total of 21 tracks in all. Buy it for the rare Fontana LP – and savor the extra 9 cuts as a bonus! CD

✨✧ Karin KrogWe Could Be Flying (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Polydor/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Magnificent work from European jazz vocalist Karin Krog – a landmark album that shows why she sings like no other singer! On this 1974 session, Karin moves far beyond the standard jazz of her roots – into territory that's spacey, cosmic, and filled with the best influences bubbling underground in the Euro scene of the 70s. The backing group features Steve Kuhn on keyboards, Steve Swallow on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums – all working out these beautiful modal patterns that unlock Karin's cool and icy vocals. The tunes are all pretty incredible too – vocal versions of originals by Kuhn, like "Meaning Of Love", "Sometime To Go", and "Raindrops Raindrops"; a very cool version of Joni Mitchell's "All I Want", a rare Jon Hendricks' lyrical version of JJ Johnson's "Lament", and a sweet and breezy take on the Michel Colombier tune "We Could Be Flying"! ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassSpeak Love ... CD
Pablo/Polydor (Japan), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A magical pairing discovered late in Ella's career – but one that brought whole new life into her music! The album revives the duo of Fitzgerald and Pass in the same spare duet setting that made for a few key Pablo records in the 70s – but there's a slight difference here in the way that Joe's handling his guitar – sometimes a bit bolder, and recorded more up in the mix – so that his chromatic hues share center stage equally with Ella's vocals. If anything, this new approach is even better than before – and Pass seems like a much more confident player, one who's a perfect choice to keep the fire going in Ella's aging vocals. Titles include "Girl Talk", "Blue & Sentimental", "Speak Low", "Comes Love", "At Last", "There's No You", and "Gone With The Wind". CD

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Billie HolidayElla Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday At Newport ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Two of the biggest singers who ever worked for Verve Records – captured perfectly at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957! Ella Fitzgerald steps out with a strong, lively groove on the first half of the set – swinging things with a looser, more upbeat quality than on some of her mellower Verve studio sets of the late 50s – really grooving it up with small combo backing from the trio of pianist Don Abney! Billie Holiday also gets some small combo backing too – a hip trio with Mal Waldron on piano, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Jo Jones on drums – often a bit more laidback than the group on Ella's sides, but in a great way that helps Holiday hit a very intimate sound, even before this large audience. Ella sings "This Can't Be Love", "Body & Soul", "April In Paris", "I Got A Crush On You", and "Airmail Special" – and Billie sings "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "What A Little Moonlight Can Do", "My Man", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Lady Sings The Blues". Billie HolidayEssential Billie Holiday – Carnegie Hall Concert ... LP
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99 19.99
A very unusual concert from Billie Holiday – one that features narration by Gilbert Millstein, telling the story of Billie's life! The format is quite unusual – almost a live documentary, with the subject of the documentary there in person herself! Millstein narrates from the start, and Billie emerges with songs throughout – using Millstein's narration to bracket portions of her career, then delivering the tunes associated with that portion. Backing is by an all-hip group that includes Coleman Hawkins, Kenny Burrell, Chico Hamilton, Roy Eldridge, and Buck Clayton – and titles include "I Cried For You", "My Man", "Don't Explain", "Lady Sings The Blues", "Body & Soul", "I Love My Man", and "Yesterdays". LP, Vinyl record album

Billie HolidayLady Sings the Blues ... LP
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Possibly one of the most essential Billie Holiday albums for Verve – a set that carries the same title as her famous autobiography, and which also features many key numbers from her songbook at the time! The feel here is quite easygoing and relaxed – with small group backing behind Billie's vocals, which themselves are recorded cleanly and clearly throughout. One side features backing by a combo that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Paul Quinichette on tenor – and the other features a group that includes Bobby Tucker on piano, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, and the great Willie Smith on alto sax. Titles include plenty of classics – including "God Bless The Child", "Strange Fruit", "Lady Sings The Blues", "No Good Man", "Good Morning Heartache", "I Must Have That Man", and "Trav'lin' Light". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s mono Japanese Polydor pressing – UMV 2047 – with obi and insert. Cover has light wear, some spotty aging, and some small white print blemishes.)

Lee Wiley & Ellis LarkinsDuologue ... LP
Storyville, 1954. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A beautiful little concept for a beautiful little album – a "duologue" in which Lee Wiley sings one track, then Ellis Larkins plays the next, and so on – making for a split LP, but one with a lot of variety along the way! Wiley sings on about two thirds of the tracks on the set – working with a small combo that features Jimmy Jones on piano, Ruby Braff on trumpet, Jo Jones on drums, and Bill Pemberton on bass – all of whom provide gentle accompaniment to Lee's traditionally styled vocals. Ellis Larkins plays piano on the rest of the tracks – solo, with that wonderful late nite style of his – an approach that's more complicated than cocktail piano, but a bit more laidback than straighter jazz. Wiley numbers include "My Heart Stood Still", "Give It Back To The Indians", "My Romance", "You Took Advantage Of Me", and "My Funny Valentine". Larkins numbers include "Perfume & Rain", "By Myself", "Looking At You", and "Then I'll Be Tired Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Georgie FameMod Classics 1964 to 1966 ... CD
Columbia/BGP (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Completely wonderful work from Georgie Fame – a stone cooking collection of his mid 60s mod recordings for Columbia Records in the UK – a unique combination of jazz, soul, and R&B – all delivered with a style so original, it can only be dubbed Fame-like! Georgie's approach really digs deep on the American scene – a bit of New Orleans soul, a dose of New York soul jazz, all filtered together with a London appreciation of the best elements of both, and delivered with a tightness that almost beats out most US recordings that even try to come close! The collection does a great job of avoiding material already compiled on the Polydor Fame set from years back – and really goes for upbeat, hard-grooving numbers that show why Georgie's music had such a big role in the hippest sides of the London scene of the 60s. Titles include "Sweet Thing", "Something", "Point Of No Return", "Lil Darlin", "El Bandido", "Dawn Yawn", "Music Talk", "Outrage", "It's Got The Whole World Shakin", "Move It On Over", "Last Night", "The World Is Round", and "See Saw". ✨✧ Blossom DearieBlossom Dearie ... LP
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing early work from Blossom Dearie – quite possibly her best album for Verve, recorded in the mid 50s right after her return from work on the Paris scene! The style here is sprightly and whimsical, yet also fragile and human – a blend that few other singers can pull off as well as Dearie – a trademark sound right from the get-go, and this album's probably the best place to start with Blossom's solo career! Backing is by a small combo that features Ray Brown on bass, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Jo Jones on drums – and Blossom herself plays piano. Titles include "Deed I Do", "You For Me", "Tout Doucement", "Everything I've Got", "Wait Till You See Her", and "A Fine Spring Morning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongElla Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong – George Gershwin: Porgy & Bess ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Anita O'Day pays tribute to Downbeat poll winners by singing vocal versions of their big hits in this lively set of jazz tracks from the 50s! Arrangements are by Marty Paich and Russ Garcia, both swinging as nicely as they ever did – and the setting of the album keeps Anita nicely in line, sticking to more straight jazz material than you might hear on some of her other sets from the same period. Titles include "Frenesi", "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Early Autumn", "Four Brothers", "Four", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese Polydor pressing – UMV 2536. Includes insert.)
