Jef GilsonJef Gilson Archives – A Collection Of Previously Unreleased Recordings, Rehearsals, Demos & Alternate Takes ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $8.99
Amazing sounds from Jef Gilson – one of the coolest, hippest jazz musicians working on the European scene of the 60s and 70s! Gilson has his own label – Palm Records – and was noted for his keen sense of collaboration, and openness to new ideas – not just modern elements that were moving around the postwar scene, but also some crucial crossovers with other global styles as well – and his list of collaborators over the years included reedman Michel Portal, trumpeter Bernard Vitet, prog rocker Christian Vander, and exotic jazz musician Lloyd Miller. Gilson's music was often issued in small pressings over the years, or buried under the names of bigger stars in his collaborations – but this wonderful package finally shows the genius in his full light – by bringing forth a host of rare tracks from Gilson's own archives, carefully selected by the Jazzman Records team. There's a really wonderful array of sounds going on here – some straighter jazz grooves, some offbeat rhythms, some exotic instrumental passages, and some occasional forays into Latin or African modes – all instantly compelling, and with the sort of unique sounds that are bound to have you digging for some of Gilson's commercially released music. Titles include "Choro In Blue", "Chant Inca", "Lamento", "Three Four One", "Anamorphose", "Java", "Agnus Dei", "Java Pour Raspail", and "La Cigale Et La Fourmi". (Jazz, Stocking Stuffers) CD
