✨✧ Eumir Deodato, Tom Jobim, & OthersBossa Nova – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kind of a painful movie, but a pretty sweet soundtrack! The set features a number of new works produced by Deodato, very much in the spirit of his Inutil Paisagem 60s bossa recordings – with wonderfully complex airy melodies, and a touch so light you can't believe there's actually a conscious act behind the music. The new titles feature vocals by Barbara Mendes and Carol Rogers – and include "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Mary Ann's Theme", "Suddenly", "Soul Mates", "Amor Em Paz", and "Juan's Theme". Most of the rest of the CD features older work from Jobim's years at Verve and CTI – including the tracks "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Chega De Saudade", and "Inutil Paisagem". Also features a semi-painful duet between Jobim and Sting – ouch! (Brazil, Soundtracks) CD

Jaime Delgado AparicioEl Embajador Y Yo (plus Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio) ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1966. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
An amazing little soundtrack – written in mid 60s Peru by jazz pianist Jaime Delgado Aparicio, but easily on a par with some of the best American or Italian scores from the time! The music's got a really wonderful feel throughout – jazz at the core, but with touches of spy soundtrack scoring and some of the lighter, more comedic modes of the Italian scene. Delgado uses a core combo with heavy piano, percussion, and some great trumpet and tenor – almost with the tightness of the Basso-Valdambrini group – but he also expands the sound with bits of strings and some fuller orchestrations, used to shade in some amazing colors that roll, dip, and turn with the beautiful grooves penned for the set. The whole thing's tremendous, with equally great production that creates some odd twists and turns that further keep things interesting as the album rolls on. Titles include "Elm Embajador Y Yo", "Sexy Surf", "Llegando A La Capital", "Isometria", "Todo El Mundo Me Persigue", "Lucha En El Mar", and "La Arana". Added to the soundtrack is Jamie's 1964 album – Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio – a crackling bit of piano jazz from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – and a record that's somewhere between the best of Horace Silver on Blue Note, and some of the Brazilian bossa trios of the time! There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout – round, rolling basslines punctuated by great work on the drum kit – all topped by beautifully lyrical lines from Delgado Aparicio on piano – filled with color, light, and life throughout – and soloing with a depth that's rare for such a young player! Titles include a great version of Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", plus "The Climate", "Autumn Leaves", "Walkin", and "Blue Daniel". CD

Lo ResMarvin Gaye's Trouble Man – Adapted & Conducted By Lo Res ... LP
S'Plat, 2022. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
The original soundtrack to Trouble Man is nothing short of a masterpiece – a full-on moment of studio genius from Marvin Gaye, right in the middle of his classic 70s run – a record that's given a fantastic new treatment here by Lo Res, who delivers exactly what's promised in the title! The record's not a straight rehash of the original – as Lo Res clearly knows and loves, and has completely absorbed the original – so that he can take the whole thing and open it up with new arrangements, interesting instrumentation, and a mix of strings, jazz, and funky elements that are completely sublime. If anything, the set seems to more fully expand on the orchestrations of the original, while losing none of the sense of the soul – and apart from a vocal appearance by Blackwolf, most of the focus is instrumental – on titles that include "Cleo's Apartment", "T Plays It Cool", "Don't Mess With Mr T", "T Stands For Trouble", "Theme From Trouble Man", "Poor Abbey Walsh", "The Break In", and "Deep In It". Michel PortalL'Ombre Rouge ... LP
Saravah (France), 1981. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A fairly interesting soundtrack from French avant sax player Michel Portal – recorded with a host of like-minded talents that include Daniel Humair, JF Jenny Clark, Louis Sclavis, and Maurice Vander. The range of the tracks is pretty surprising – from spare sax solos by Portal, to Latin-tinged tunes and tangos, to spacey soundscapes with a mixture of jazz and electronics. All titles have that Saravah or Nato approach to the work, though – with a style of avant garde that's never too angry, never too overblown, and which always stops for a bit of whimsy. Titles include "Conil", "Adios", "J'Accepte", "Palais De La Decouverte", and "Azpeitia". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo SchneiderSobre La Hierba – Virgen ... LP
Discomoda/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... $29.99 33.99
A rare bit of soundtrack funk from mid 70s Venezuela – a set that's strongly influenced by Italian cop/crime modes of the time, but sometimes served up with a nicely leaner vibe as well! In addition to the funky guitar, tight basslines, and jazzy horns you might expect – there's also some interesting moments that include odd keyboards, acoustic guitar, and even a violin and piano duet – used in ways to offset more familiar funky styles to really keep things interesting! The music was scored for a sexploitation film of the time, and certainly echoes the way those films were scored around the globe – but as with so much Venezuelan work of the period, there's a very special, very unique approach as well. Titles include "Malandro", "El Secuestro", "Jenny", "la Venganza", "Bajando El Cerro", "Tacarigua", and "Tema De Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alessandro Alessandroni/Francesco DeMasiLesbo – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". CD

✨✧ Maurice LecoeurMusiques Pour L'Image ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really funky sounds from Maurice Lecoeur – an overlooked French soundtrack genius of the 70s – and one who worked in territory that was way past familiar standards for film! If you know the music of Francois DeRoubaix, you'll find plenty here to love – because like DeRoubaix, Lecoeur effortlessly mixes acoustic and electric, groovy and laidback, funky and jazzy – all with styles that move from full instrumentation to much sparer moments – at a level that matches if not beats some of the coolest sound library material of the time! Each track seems to have a very different vibe, which really keeps things interesting – and plenty funky too – and the package features 22 rare nuggets that include "Le Ballet Inacheve", "Sans Premeditation", "Baoou", "Safari Au Kivu Theme 1", "Faux Suspense", "Le Soleil Qui Rit Rouge", "Les Petites Filles Modeles", "Donne Moi La Terre", "Tartares", and "Chili". ✨✧ Philipe SardeQuest For Fire (Strijd Om Het Vuur) ... LP
RCA, 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Philippe Sarde's sophisticated score for the film La Guerre Du Feu – also known as Quest For Fire – music that's a fair bit more modern than the prehistoric setting of the movie! Most of the instrumentation is orchestral, but Sarde also allows plenty of space for spare, brooding moments too – passages that have an almost tribal quality at points, and an organically resonant approach at others. The recording has quite a high dynamic range – bursting from silence to fullness in a very short space – then slinking back into the shadows at the next moment! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousCiao! Manhattan ... CD
Cinewax/Light In The Attic, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The lovely and late Edie Sedgwick is the cover draw on the record and movie – but the music within is maybe an even more interesting blend of sounds, and very different than what you might expect to come from the famous star of Andy Warhol's Factory scene! Some of the music here is by Gino Piserchio – and is spare, electronic material – of the creepy style that you'd hear in underground films of the time, but sometimes almost given a Brian Eno sort of tunefulness too. Other tracks are vocal numbers, and have a rootsy rock vibe that seems much more west coast than New York – which makes a nice contrast. There's even a few spoken passages that feature Edie's voice from the film – which balances things out in a great way. Titles include "Angel Shock", "Driving Verdeccio", "Revolution Of Youth", and "Night Riders" by Gino Piserchio – plus "I Can't Make It Anymore" by Richie Havens, "Citizen Kane" by Skip Battin & Kim Fowley, "To Give All Your Love Away" by Richie Havens, "Malibu People" by John Phillips, "Justice" by Kim Milford, and "Shouldn't All The World Be Dancing" by Richie Havens. ✨✧ Guido & Maurizio De AngelisRoma Violenta ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Italian crime soundtracks of all time – a totally groovy little record that's done in a style that's quite different than American crime scores of the time, but still completely wonderful! Most of the instrumentation here is relatively spare – almost a small combo funk approach to scoring for a cop film, but done with the penchant for isolated focus on a key instrument that makes Italian soundtracks so great. There's no full horns nor funky orchestrations – and in their place are stepping bass bits, lightly dancing keyboards, and plenty of guitar parts – some jamming, some nicely spacey with a really eerie feel! The sound is great – never as cheesy as other Italian work from the mid to late 70s – and there's a grittier feel here than you'd expect, one that really keeps things interesting. CD features note in English and Italian, and a total of 23 tracks that include "The Reason Of A Just War", "The Punitive Justice", "The Other Face", "Undercover Investigation", "Gangster Story", "Casa Di Muda", and "Chicca".
