Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! A sweet little score from Italian composer Nico Fidenco – best known round these parts for his sultry work for some of the 70s Emmanuelle films, sounding equally groovy on this more obscure album from the time! There's a light groove throughout the album – sometimes a slinky Euro sex sort of vibe, other times a much more pronounced approach to funk – with a mix of electric and acoustic elements that includes vibes, keyboards, flute, piano, and other great touches – all recorded with the spaciousness and care you'd expect from the generation. Great work from one of the best contemporary soundtrack artists going – Cliff Martinez's score for Drive – done at a level that's got a really classic vibe! And by classic, we mean classic 80s electronic – as Cliff has this spare, moody style that's really wonderful – sometimes focused strongly on keyboards, sometimes with these airy orchestrations that still continue this long flow – all used brilliantly in the movie, at a speed you'd never expect, given the title! A really unusual soundtrack from the mighty Lalo Schifrin – and one that seems to show off all of his best modes in its shifting range of styles! The film is a somewhat understated story set on the streets of New York – and the music often takes on the same sort of vibe – with some beautiful melodic passages that are quite different than Lalo's big hits of the 60s. But then there's also some beautiful orchestra moments too – with these arrangements that are complicated, yet sparkling – that sophisticated charm that always put Schifrin ahead of the pack! And then Lalo even opens up with a few funkier tracks that recall his electric jazz albums of the late 70s for the CTI label – fuller groovers that are showcased on the two longest tracks – "Hey Nunzio" and "Candy Store Frenzy".
