✨✧ Piero UmilianiParanoia ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1968. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic music from the great Piero Umiliani – one of Italy's greatest soundtrack composers, and definitely at the top of his game here! The music was recorded right around the same time as Umiliani's legendary work for Sweden Heaven & Hell – and there's a similar mix of styles going on here – a strong leadoff track with female vocals, groovy swingers with a nice degree of jazz, some excellent use of organ, and some really cool mellower numbers that have this subtle sonic power that's really wonderful – often again dosed with some nice use of organ! The score features 16 tracks in all – with subtitles that really give you an idea of the groove – including "pop jazz", "bossa", "psychedelic suspense", "samba jazz", and "jazz pour l'action". Stelvio CiprianiSbirro – La Tua Legge E Lenta La Mia No (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
There's few folks we love more for a cop/crime soundtrack than the great Stelvio Cipriani – as the 70s Italian maestro always has a way of making things groove, but with these cool sophisticated touches that make his music more distinct than most! This set's clearly got an influence from American crime scores from a few years before, but Stelvio takes things in all these cool directions of his own – which include putting in a nice sense of space on the mellower groovers, shifting up some of the instrumentation from the usual, and also bringing in his great ear for a keyboard part at just the right moment! This issue of the album features three bonus tracks not on any other reissue – and the sound quality is wonderful. CD

Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... LP
Dark Entries, 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". LP, Vinyl record album

Vince GuaraldiPeanuts Portraits – The Classic Character Themes ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... On August 21, 2020
Some of the grooviest tunes from the Peanuts cartoons – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". Also features versions of "The Masked Marvel" and "Linus & Lucy" played solo by George Winston. (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Armando TrovajoliLa Terrazza/Telefoni Bianchi ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1976/1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Armando Trovajoli in the late 70s – heard here on two different soundtracks that provide a nice update to his sexy 60s groove! First up is the score for La Terrazza – which features both some uptempo funky club groovers, and some slower slinky sex-drenched tunes – at a level that follows well from some of the Italian cop soundtracks of the time – and which, overall, maybe sounds a lot better than most of Trovajoli's contemporaries were doing in 1980! Instrumentation is nice and warm – and still very fleshed-out in all the right ways – more mid 70s cop/crime than thinner 80s keyboards – heard here on five tracks from the film, three of which are nice and long. Telefoni Bianchi has Trovajoli in a different style – maybe a bit more sentimental on some of the melodic moments – but also using some sprightly jazz violin, which almost gives the whole thing a Paris swing vibe at times. There's a few vocal tracks that have a lush sort of vibe – and a few more waltz-like numbers – on titles that include "Oasi Di Cartone", "Milonga", "Portami Tante Rose", "Anni Trenta", "Ricordando Count Basie", and "Fanfara Nunziale". ✨✧ JJ Johnson/Martha ReevesWillie Dynamite – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MCA/Geffen, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks of the blacksploitation era – served up with some incredible grooves from maestro JJ Johnson! The album's got a non-stop, hard-hitting groove that ranks it with the best of its time – and which is arguably even better, because most of the record isn't nearly as well known as Shaft, Superfly, or other classics. Martha Reeves sings some of the deepest vocals of her career on the great title track "Willie D" – an old sample cut that you're sure to recognize – and the instrumental tunes are even better, filled with great percussion and jazzy flourishes from JJ – in a style that really keeps things interesting! There's plenty of "chase" riffing on the album – and titles include "Willie Chase", "Parade Strut", "Make It Right", "Gospel Family", "Keep On Movin", and "Willie Escapes". ✨✧ Henry ManciniParty ... CD
RCA/Elemental (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great Mancini score for one of the goofiest films of the 60s! Peter Sellers stars as the sitar-playing Indian actor Hrundi Bakshi – next to the lovely Claudine Longet, who makes one of her few film appearances – and the whole thing's set to one of the greatest scores ever by Henry Mancini! The tunes are very groovy – with a few chorus vocal numbers, and some other wonderful tracks that mix together bits of sitar, guitar, and horn blasts – creating a very lively instrumental groove. Plus, the music is played by a tight group of LA jazzmen – with Plas Johnson on tenor, Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Shelly Manne on drums – all musicians who really make things cook! Titles include instrumental and chorus versions of "Nothing To Lose", plus "Chicken Little Was Right", "Birdie Num Num", "Party Poop", "Wiggy", and "Brunette In Yellow". Swingin! CD

Stelvio CiprianiRhythmical Movement (with bonus download) ... LP
Sugar/Cinedelic (Italy), 1980. Sealed ... $19.99
Rhythmical movement is our favorite kind of movement – especially when it's done right, which it definitely is in the hands of Italian soundtrack maestro Stelvio Cipriani – who turns in some wonderful grooves for this rare sound library set! The album's got a funky vibe that matches some of Cipriani's best film score material from the late 70s from the keyboard-heavy cuts that he used in both love and comedy scores, to some of the more upbeat disco sounds he'd bring out for other films – although the album's pretty darn upbeat overall, and definitely lives up to the movement-heavy promise of the title! Most tracks are instrumental, with nice funky currents and keyboards – and titles include "What Can I Do", "Brasil Connection", "Living & Loving", "Don't Tamper With My Things", "Burglar Proof", "Percussion Gun", and "Chicago USA". Kenyon HopkinsBaby Doll ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Kenyon Hopkins at his finest – informed by jazz, but scored with a bit more seriousness overall – in that late 50s style that oozes social consciousness from the very first note! The score's a lot more put together, and somewhat more restrained than the film – almost a jazz score in itself, but with fuller orchestrations overall, conducted by Ray Heindorf. Smiley Lewis plays a bit of piano on the set, and titles include "Fire & Baby Doll", "Doctor & Archie", "Baby Doll's Fright", "Ghosts", and "The Confession". LP, Vinyl record album

Michel LegrandLes Demoiselles De Rochefort (Young Girls of Rochefort) (French version) ... LP
Universal (France), 1966. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! This double-length set presents the expanded original score – with many songs that were not on the original single version of the soundtrack, plus key bits of dialogue to help transition the tunes. Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris". Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
A great third chapter in the Danish Pornography series by Alex Puddu – and, like the others, music that was recorded to accompany the re-release of some classic adult films from the 70s! As you'd guess from the title and project, the sound here is very retro overall – wicked funk that works very hard to hit all the right slinky and sleazy notes needed to accompany the images of grown-up fun on the screen – with plenty of electric touches on a range of different keyboards and guitar (and even a bit of electric sitar, too) – in grooves that have a nicely building vibe, but which never try too hard to overtake the visual energy of the moment. In other words (if we can extend this metaphor even further), Alex is great at the foreplay, keeps things going a long time, and really knows how to build to a musical climax – on titles that include "Lesbian Lovers", "The Swinger Generation", "Cowboys Do It Better", "Black Orgasm", "Seductive Star", "Africa Scream", "Exotic Love", "Behind Closed Doors", and "Sex Bar". John Cameron/Alan ParkerAfro Rock – KPM 1030 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Digitmovies (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
Classic cop soundtrack work from the Italian scene of the 70s – a funky nugget that rivals our own American police scores of the time, but one that also has some darker elements too! The upbeat tunes here often feature lots of keyboards, funky bass, and guitar – quick-tempo grooves that move with lots of fast action – offset by some mellower numbers that mix in spookier strings and some creepier orchestrations, of the sort you might hear in an Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Micalizzi's always been one of the best Italian composers for crime/cop work like this – and the score is right up there with his best work – beautifully presented in this package that features 17 cuts from the film! Piero UmilianiPsichedelica ... CD
Omicron/Schema (Italy), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Not the sort of psychedelic music you'd expect from an American rock band of the late 60s – and instead, a stunning set of funky genius from Italian soundtrack maestro Piero Umiliani! The record's actually a precursor to Umiliani's famous global score for Sweden Heaven & Hell (Svezia Inferno E Paradiso) – and shares many of the themes that went onto that record, complete with romping funky rhythms, sweet jazzy Hammond lines, and mod fuzzy guitar! Many numbers are upbeat groovers, without any of the longform indulgence you'd expect from psychedelia – and Umiliani draws on his jazz background to allow just the right space for solo instruments to take the lead in the instrumental setting. Titles include "Birra Vermouth E Gin", "Contestazione", "Hippies", "Nel Cosmo", "Stoccolma My Dear", "Notte Di Mezza Estate", and "Viva La Sauna Svedese" – a version of the classic "Mah Na Mah Na". Croydon Municipal (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
Not the usual film themes of the late 50s and early 60s – no James Bond numbers or Henry Mancini hits – and instead, a very cool, very well-selected batch of tracks that really opens up this cinematic generation! All of the numbers stand very well on their own – and the set mixes jazzy groovers with vocal themes and other standout moments from more obscure movies of the time – all to make a really playful, really groovy package that's filled with surprise after surprise all the way through! The music is from both British and American sources – and titles include "No Love For Johnnie" by Gerry Beckles, "A Kind Of Loving" by Ron Grainer, "Live Now Pay Later" by Doug Sheldon, "Payroll" by Reg Owen, "Take A Giant Step" by Ernest Maxin, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Hardy Kruger, "Look For A Star" by Gary Mills, "I'm All Right Jack" by Al Saxon, and "Duet From 16" by John Dankworth.
