Miles DavisAscenseur Pour L'Echafaud (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana (France), 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a groundbreaking soundtrack that forever changed the way that jazz music was used in film! According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisSiesta ... CD
Warner, 1987. Used ... $4.99
One of Miles' last great albums – a soundtrack composed in conjunction with Marcus Miller, and recorded with a mix of atmospheric electronics and trumpet solos, coming off in a way that sounds far better than most of his other attempts at this style from the time. Miller plays all the other instruments in the set, apart from some occasional guest work by players that include John Scofield, Earl Klugh, Omar Hakim, and Jason Miles. Titles include "Conchita", "Lament", "Los Feliz", "Lost In Madrid", "Siesta", "Kitt's Kiss", and "Wind". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD

VariousFrench New Wave (Et Dieu Crea La Femme/Un Temoin Dans La Ville/Jazz Sur Seine/Eva/Jules Et Jim/Tires Sur Le Pianiste/Le Meprise/A Bout De Souffle) (5CD set) ... CD
DOL (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $12.99
5CDs' worth of great music from the Nouvelle Vague – the French New Wave of Cinema that emerged at the end of the 50s – and which often featured a fair bit of jazz in the mix for its soundtracks! CD1 features the Paul Misraki score for Et Dieu Crea La Femme – And God Created Woman – an early Brigitte Bardot film directed by Roger Vadim, full of jazzy numbers by Misraki, presented here without the Bardot narration on other versions of the soundtrack. The CD features 23 tracks in all – with bonus material too! CD2 features great work from tenorist Barney Wilen – his full soundtrack to the film Un Temoin Dans La Ville, plus his own jazz album Jazz Sur Seine! CD3 features the Michel Legrand music for Eva – a perfect blend of Legrand's earlier straighter jazz work, with some of his later talent for groovy orchestrations. The overall feel is quite dark – with the kind of jazz-based soundscapes that were showing up in some other French soundtracks at the time, and sweet little noirish feel. CD4 features three scores by Georges Delerue – all for films directed by Francois Truffaut – Jules Et Jim, Tires Sur Le Pianiste, and Le Mepris – all sounding great together. CD5 features Martial Solal's score for A Bout De Souffle – a film best known as Breathless around the world, and an early movie by Jean Luc Godard that perhaps gave Martial Solal his biggest early global exposure! Solal's sharp, modern tones on the piano are very firmly in place here – but there's also lots of more dynamic jazz instrumentation too – of the sort that rivals other French new wave soundtracks by artists like Miles Davis, Barney Wilen, or Art Blakey. Yet Solal, like Godard, is perhaps a bit more sophisticated in his musical approach – and often breaks out into these little paintings in jazz, a bit like some of Elmer Bernstein on our favorite jazzy late 50s soundtracks.
