Attila ZollerJazz Soundtracks – Original Music From The Arthouse Films Of Hans Jurgen Poland 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
One of the greatest European jazz guitarists – heard here in some of his grooviest work of the 60s – an amazing batch of material recorded for the art house films of director Hansjurgen Pohland! Zoller already had a modern tone by the time of these recordings – a sublime sound on the guitar that rivaled that of Billy Bauer with the Lee Konitz group of the 50s, but which was also freer, and open to rich new ideas too – especially from a rhythmic and tonal standpoint, which always keeps Zoller's work compelling! Attila's way more than just another jazzy player on the instrument – and film material like this really lets him stretch his imagination – and unlock a whole whose of tones and colors that are quite imagistic in nature. Most tracks are played by a small combo led by Zoller – often working in front of the screen as images passed by – scenes from films that include Katz Und Maus, Tamara, and The Bread Of Our Early Years. This set marks the first release of the material actually recorded for those films on record – and titles include "Family Bricks", "Pilenz", "Road Song", "Minesweeper", "Cold Fusion", "Adam's Apple", "Hedwig's Departure", "Mousetip Strut", and "Mahlke". ✨✧ Stu Phillips/Dino Desi & BillyFollow Me ... LP
Uni, 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". LP, Vinyl record album
(A nice copy! Cover has a small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Alfred NewmanLove Is A Many Splendored Thing ... CD
Kritzerland, 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Love Is A Many Splendored Thing is filled with the sort of lush strings and rich emotion that Newman could do so well – heard to great effect on the album's famous main theme, but then changed up nicely with some surprising exotic touches that echo the Hong Kong setting of the film – little bits of percussion and woodwinds that trade back and forth nicely between some of the more anglo-oriented dramatic moments. The set's a great example of Hollywood scoring at its best during the 50s – and titles include "Third Uncle", "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing", "The Moon Festival", "Destiny", "Viendras Tu Ce Soir", and "Mark's Letter". CD
(Out of print, limited edition of 2000.)

✨✧ Earl HagenI Spy – Original Television Soundtrack ... CD
Film Score Monthly, Mid/Late 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The CD features a set of tracks that's greatly expanded from the original soundtrack LP – adding in lots of bonus material that has never been issued to the public, for a full package of 25 tracks that really gets at the heart of Hagen's genius! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong Kong) makes for some added musical touches that bring a groovy global aspect to the work. Packaged with great notes on Hagen, the music, and the show – and with 25 titles that include "Babe With Rocks", "Stop That Plane", "The Whistle Blows", "Tokyo", "Don Silvando", and "Taxi Tour". CD

✨✧ Francis LaiEmmanuelle 2 – L'Anti Vierge ... LP
Victor/Diggers Factory (France), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sleazy film, but one with some really great music from Francis Lai – the composer better known for his mainstream contributions to classics like A Man & A Woman and Live For Life! In any setting, Lai displays an amazing genius for spare tunes that hit a lyrical chord and a warmly sentimental mode – never one that's sleepy or drippy, but just the right balance of sounds and rhythms to convey a tremendous amount with very little. Lai plays a fair bit of keyboards here, lightly electric, and relatively spare – but not as much so as on some of his other 70s soundtracks – and titles include "Emmanuelle 2", LA Seduction De L'Ile De Bali", "Emmanuelle Au Hong Kong", "Le Plaisir D'Amour", "La Maison De Rendez-Vous", and "L'Amour D'Aimer" – which has vocals from Sylvia Kristel. ✨✧ Henry ManciniTrail Of The Pink Panther ... LP
Liberty, 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A mighty nice Henry Mancini soundtrack – penned for the final Pink Panther film to star Peter Sellers in the lead – and served up by maestro Mancini at the top-shelf level that's always made his music such a crucial part of the series of movies! The set has a number of renditions of the main theme, mixed in with other modes – but also uses these other moments with really well-crafted, all acoustic orchestrations that are filled with imagination and whimsy – such a nice change for a period when so many others were relying on mostly electric instrumentation to get the music across. Titles include "Hong Kong Fireworks", "Shot In The Dark", "Simone", "Inspector Clouseau Theme", and "Trail Of The Pink Panther". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Denny ZeitlinInvasion Of The Body Snatchers ... LP
United Artists, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking albums ever recorded by Denny Zeitlin – the dark soundtrack to this late 70s remake of the horror classic Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. There's a very minimal use of electronics on the record, combined with some wonderful orchestrations from Zeitlin – very dark and turgid, with some touches that are almost electronic sounding themselves. Titles include "The Reckoning", "Escape To Darkness", "Flight", "On The Streets", "Angel Of Death", and "Rescue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSoul In The Hole ... LP
RCA, 1997. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The movie "Soul In The Hole" may have come and gone without anyone paying too much attention, but the soundtrack is dooope, with a lot of tracks that are unavailable anywhere but on this LP. We're not sure how Loud did it, but instead of MC's supplying throwaway tracks, they gave up some of their best material. Includes Common "High Expectations", Organized Konfusion "Late Night Action", OC "Your Life", Mobb Deep "Rare Species", Dead Prez "The Game of Life", MOP "Ride", Brand Nubian "A Child is Born", Wu All Stars "Soul In The Hole" Xzibit "Los Angeles Times", Wu-Tang Clan "Diesel", Sauce Money "Against The Grain", Cocoa Bros "Won On Won", Darc Mind "Visions of Blur" and Dwellas "Main Aim".
