Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... LP
Dark Entries, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Toru TakemitsuTokyo Senso Sengo Hiwa (The Man Who Left His Will On Film) – Searching For Fantasy/In The End ... 7-inch
Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1970. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
Two beautiful tracks from this early 70s Japanese soundtrack – back to back on a single 45! "Searching For Fantasy" is a trippy electric piano number from Toru Takemitsu – done with this snakey guitar line that almost feels like a sitar at times – evocatively dipping, turning, and weaving its way through the piano – which itself is watery and dream-like! "In The End" has more great piano – rounder, warmer tones with this gentle melody – but again kind of trippy, and with a beautiful nodding bassline in the background! (Funky 45's, Soundtracks) 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ed Bogas/Ray Shanklin/VariousFritz The Cat – Original Soundtrack (picture disc) (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Fantasy, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
The funky freaky soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi's animated feature Fritz The Cat – a really messed-up little film based around the original character created by Robert Crumb! Like the movie, the album's got a very skittish kind of feel – leaping from one genre to the next with each different track – but mostly featuring some older numbers from the Fantasy catalog, plus some key newer tracks for the set that are nice and funky! Original tunes include the bad-rapping "Fritz The Cat", by Ed Bogas and The Watson Sisters – plus the instrumentals "Duke's Theme" and "Bertha's Theme" by Ray Shanklin, and "The Riot" and "Winston" by Ed Bogas. Also includes "Love Light Of Mine" by The Watson Sisters, "Black Talk" by Charles Earland, and "Mamblues" by Cal Tjader. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition picture disc – with a stop-animation feature on the B-side!)

✨✧ John Barry/Elephant's Memory/The Groop/NilssonMidnight Cowboy ... CD
United Artists/EMI, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sublime soundtrack from John Barry – common, to be sure, but also a wonderfully-crafted set that goes way beyond the stereotypes of his work for the James Bond films! The record is probably best known for Nilsson's famous version of the Fred Neil tune "Everybody's Talkin" – which is great in itself – but it's Barry's own work on the title theme that we totally love. "Midnight Cowboy" is a darkly turning slowly pondering tune that will haunt us until the day we die – performed here on the original number with a sad-tinged harmonica that unites both the country of Joe Buck's roots and the sleaze of the love generation. The tune's great – and is matched here by the whimsy of "Florida Fantasy", and the Barry tracks "Fun City" and "Science Fiction". Another great number on the set is "Old Man Willow", a really tripped-out longer track from Elephant's Memory – swirling around in organ and hippie vocals, and oddly echoing the main Barry theme of the set at times! CD

Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisBomber ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1982. New Copy ... $19.99
A catchy little soundtrack for a weird sort of film – one in which Italian comedy heavyweight Bud Spencer plays a boxer, and gets a great theme to match his action in and out of the ring! The core of the score is a groovy electro pop tune titled "Fantasy" – almost a mix between late 70s ELO and some of the cop/crime work of Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis – served up here in many many variations – some vocal, some instrumental – so that the whole thing almost feels like a long set of remixes dedicated to a single tune! There's a few other tracks in the mix too – and these space things out slightly – and although we've never seen the movie, we're betting that this repetition of Bud's theme is part of the charm of the whole thing. Vince GuaraldiOh Good Grief! ... CD
Warner, 1968. Used ... $6.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". ✨✧ Monty NormanDr No – Original Soundtrack ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The first James Bond soundtrack – pre-John Barry, but already showing Bond music as a genre unto itself! Monty Norman handles the music – and brings together some cool Caribbean sounds with familiar jazz riffs – a blend that showcases the Jamaican setting of the main narrative, but also paves the way for lots of spy jazz to come! Titles include "James Bond Theme", "Under The Mango Tree", "Jamaica Jazz", "Dr No's Fantasy", "The Boy Chase", "Love At Last", and "The Island Speaks". LP, Vinyl record album

Carlo RustichelliL'Armata Brancaleone ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1966. Used ... $6.99
A dramatic soundtrack for L'Armata Bracaleone – a mid 60s Italian fantasy action film that starred Vittorio Gassman in a strange setting that was sort of a twisted version of the Middle Ages! The tunes on the set are often orchestral and mood-setting – but a few of the more standout numbers have a driving, chanting approach – to suit the more action-based scenes of the film. There's clearly a comedic current to the movie at times, but this doesn't always come through in the music, which is maybe at its best when most dramatic! Titles include "Marcia Di Brancaleone", "Combattimento", "La Citta Appestata E Cuccuruccu", "Tema D'Amore E Brancaleone Prigoniero", and "Brancalene Incontra Teodora". CD features 33 tracks in all – including lots of rare film versions and alternates! CD
