✨✧ Duke EllingtonAnatomy Of A Murder ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful jazzy score by Duke Ellington – and a fitting companion to this classic Otto Preminger film! The record captures Ellington at a perfect moment – right during his Indigos period of increased sophistication, when his band was at an all-time level of perfection – and really shaking free of the too-familiar modes of the past. Ellington's music has a wonderful range of feeling here – even more so than usual, given the shifting scenes of the film – and the players are an all star lineup that includes Clark Terry on trumpet, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Johnny Hodges on alto, and Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet. Titles include "Upper & Outest", "Almost Cried", "Sunswept Sunday", "Happy Anatomy", "Flirtibird", and "Low Key Lightly". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 Eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split spine & top seam, small bottom seam split, surface wear, stained lower left corner.)

✨✧ Duke JordanLes Liaisons Dangereuses ... LP
Charlie Parker, 1962. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Duke Jordan takes on the groovy score to the French film Les Liasions Dangereuses – material best known via Art Blakey's original recording with tenorist Barney Wilen – but equally great here in Jordan's lesser-known version! The group here is excellent – with some of Jordan's hardest-hitting piano of the time in the lead – plus creative work on drums from Art Taylor, who brings in a very different spirit than Blakey – and soulful tenor from the great Charlie Rouse – alongside trumpet from Sonny Cohn, and bass from Eddie Khan. Titles include three different variations on the famous theme "No Problem" – plus two takes on the moody "The Feeling Of Love", and the cuts "Jazz Vendor" and "Subway Inn". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Shrinkwrap has light wear, cracked half way at the bottom seam, and a small hole at the top left where staples were applied. Cover has scrapes at the top left corner where exposed.)

✨✧ Duke Ellington/Louis ArmstrongParis Blues – Original Soundtrack ... LP
United Artists, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
We've always loved Duke Ellington's soundtracks, and this is one of his best! The score is a moody introspective one, written for a 1961 film that starred Paul Newman as a frustrated jazz musician living in Paris. The "Paris Blues" theme is a dark, somber composition that is supposedly Newman's masterpiece as a jazz writer – and it works beautifully with the film's themes of frustration and unfulfilled desire. Ellington's at his best here, and apart from the main theme, the score also has great versions of classics like "Mood Indigo" and "Take The A Train", plus originals like "Nite", "Wild Man Moore", "Guitar Amour", and "Paris Stairs". Also features Louis Armstrong on one track! (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

Barney WilenUn Temoin Dans La Ville (10 inch LP) ... LP
Mercury/Sam Records (France), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
One of the greatest French jazz soundtracks ever – a haunting score composed and performed by sax legend Barney Wilen! Barney's work is possibly best known to American audiences for his solos on the Miles Davis soundtrack Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, recorded a year earlier – and this album has Barney working with American players Kenny Clarke, Kenny Dorham, and Duke Jordan to forge a very similar sound. Tracks are spare, moody, and feature a style that's often snakey and a bit modal – perfect for the dark mood of the film, and equally evocative without any image! 12 tracks in all – including "Ambiance Pourpe", "Poursuite Et Metro", "Melodie Pour Les Radio Taxis", "Temoin Dans La Ville", "Sur L'Antenne", and "SOS Radio Taxis". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Wonderful pressing – a 10" LP with flipback cover, just like the original – but cut by Kevin Gray with even better sound!)
