A gem of a sound library record from one of the all-time greats – and maybe one of the few artists who gave his equal all, whether he was cutting a full film soundtrack, or just a discreet batch of tracks like these in the studio! The music is as groovy as groovy can be – sometimes funky, sometimes slinky – and done in this blend of heavy electric bass, nicely snapping drums, riffing guitar, and some great use of wordless vocals – maybe no surprise, since Alessandroni was the man behind the legendary I Cantori Modern! The continuing lost legacy of Patrick Cowley – the San Francisco 80s club maestro who made some famous records with Sylvester – but who also did a huge amount of underground sounds for porno films at the time! This set digs deep into that legacy – by featuring music that Cowley did for the 1982 film Afternooners, as well as a few other tracks from the time – material that's a great 80s extrapolation of the sorts of slinky funk you'd know from 70s porn! The sounds here are heavy on beats and keyboards – a much more slowed-down take on territory that Cowley explored on his club singles of the period – and the basslines are plenty heavy, and very seductive – as you might imagine, given the images they were used with on the screen. We should tell you that the package does include a few nude images inside – so be warned if you're offended by that sort of thing. A great entry in the Piedone series of films from Italian comedic legend Bud Spencer – scored by the DeAngelis brothers with a col sort of 80s take on their earlier cinematic modes! As with most of the Italian scores of the time, spare instrumentation and keyboards are used in place of fuller orchestrations – and the result is a batch of playful themes that really fit the goofy action that Spencer spins out on the screen – cheesier sounds that work very nicely with the offbeat performance that always made Bud's films such guilty pleasures! Lots of cool keyboards from Francesco De Masi – served up in a style that's a lot more 80s than his famous earlier work – almost as if Francesco was trying trying to get in with the younger horror soundtrack generation! The style is still great, though – with sounds that show all of De Masi's rich understanding of broader instrumental arrangements – which sometimes factor into the music, but which also seem to emanate from his keyboards even when they're in the lead. The music has a nice current of warmth from time to time – not just the starkness of the usual electric keyboard score, which makes for a very rich vibe to the whole record! Over the years, we've come to realize that the best thing about the Peanuts cartoons isn't the actions of Charlie Brown and Lucy, but the wonderful music from Vince Guaraldi – perhaps the one aspect of the cartoons that's kept on giving over the years, and which we can proudly carry into adulthood! Vince's music is sublime – often simple, but groovy – a mix of rhythmic vamps and more lyrical passages that perfectly underscore the melancholy that graced the characters of Charles Schultz, and which perhaps defines them even better than the clunky stories or voiceovers on the screen. Amazing sounds from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – penned for a legendary horror film from the early 80s! The movie goes way beyond typical grit and gore – with a surreal bent that's made it the stuff of much discussion over the years – and Korzynski's music definitely lives up to the spirit of the images on the screen – mixing 80s electronics with offbeat strings, odd percussion, and other compelling bits – often used in very short songs that shift often throughout the course of the album – easily making the record one of the most playful we've ever heard from Finders Keepers – yet also one of the darkest too! Rare Italian horror work done by Franco Piersanti – done for a creepy film, as you might guess from the cover – but one that's scored by Piersanti with a surprising degree of sensitivity, and some very rich orchestrations that are very different than the stark, more electric modes being used in so much of 80s horror! There's some really beautiful woodwinds in the music, and some darker strings that echo 70s atonality from Morricone – on titles that include "Labirinto", "Omicidio", "Radio Jazz", "Budapest", and "Illusioni Ottiche". One of the grooviest soundtracks we've ever heard from the mighty Piero Umiliani – a sparkling set that's filled with jazzy scatting, mod instrumentation, and loads of other wonderful 60s touches throughout! The music has that special Italian sound that's built on bossa that you'll find in some of the coolest soundtracks from Umiliani's generation – and like the rest, it really takes off in its own unique direction – with soaring, seductive sounds that live quite vibrantly away from the screen! Director Sofia Coppola's always got a great way with music in her films – and that's definitely the case here, in a collection of tracks put together for the wonderful Lost In Translation! The music is a bit different than some of Coppola's other selections – in that it's often a bit in contrast to what's happening on the screen, sometimes reflecting the disorientation of the jet-lagged characters in the movie – but there's also a few tracks that fit in perfectly with a scene-setting style too. Andrzej Korzynski composed these wonderful tracks for a successful Polish film issued elsewhere under the title Big Deal – but the sounds within are so great on their own, they don't even need a movie to stand as a testament to Korzynski's genius! The composer was easily one of the most inventive on the Eastern European scene – and even in a mainstream movie like this, he not only brings to play this amazing understanding of the possibilities of conventional instruments, but also created a heck of a lot more music than was actually used in the film – which means that the 22 track LP features almost double the amount of never-heard music than the director put up on screen – most of which is even more amazing than the music on the original soundtrack! A real European classic from Ennio Morricone – one of his fantastic soundtracks for French director Henri Verneuil – who always seemed to manage to bring the best out in the maestro! As with some of Morricone's other music for Verneuil, there's an approach here that almost doesn't even seem to fit the images on the screen – moments of wonderful instrumental sensitivity, with those spare passages that Ennio does better than anyone else – mixed with groovier cuts that set the scene for some of the action in the story, but at a level that's almost anti-cinematic, given they way they can stand here on their own. The main "Il Serpente" theme is great – and other tracks include "Canzone Lontana", "Nadine", "Orazione", "Tema Per Una Donna Sola", and "Parata Militare". LP, Vinyl record album

Really beautiful electronics from the enigmatic Guy Skornik – an artist that we mostly know for his quirky concept record Pour Pauwels, but who sounds here like some of the best electronicians of the German scene of the 70s! All tracks are long and spun out – electronic, but with acoustic elements in the mix – maybe in a mode that's similar to the 70s soundtrack creations of Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, or Vangelis – but darker, too – most likely because the music was composed for an obscure film by Alexander Jodorowsky! Yet the music here hardly needs images on a screen – as Skornik's created these wonderfully evocative passages, created with some help from Steve Hillage and members of Cossi Anatz. A creepy movie, but a wonderful soundtrack – filled with sweet touches and breezy melodies that recall the best work of the Morricone generation! The score here is penned by Fiorenzo Carpi, but conducted by Bruno Nicolai in a way that would have made Morricone proud – a style that often uses lightly floating instrumentation – gliding and dancing with nice bits of harpsichord, echoey piano, and other sounds that hang suspended in air to be slightly jostled by occasional larger string passages. Edda Dell'Orso contributes a bit of spooky wordless vocals, and there's a main theme that runs through the CD that's especially beautiful – very dreamy and bossa-like! itles include "Mariale", "Garden Party", "Ultimi Passi", "Beni Perduti", "Pelle Di Luna", "Equinozio", "La Vittima", and "Corteo Magico". Japanese jazz musician Yuji Ohno is best known for his soundtrack work for the long-running Lupin The Third, but during the 70s he also opened up his talents on a whole host of different ways – mixing familiar jazz funk scoring styles of the time with maybe a more offbeat approach to the overall soundtrack – so that there's sometimes a nice shift between different moods from tune to tune, and a vibe that's a cool change from American work of the period! This set is definitely one of Ohno's best from the time, and is filled with lots of Fender Rhodes, plus flute, vibes, sax solos, and other jazzy elements – balanced with larger arrangements that never overwhelm too much, and which are maybe in that late 70s style of some of the Creed Taylor work for Kudu Records! Wendy Carlos was known best for her important early experiments in electronic music – most recorded as Walter Carlos – but she had a great early 80s moment with this well-crafted soundtrack to the film Tron – a mix of her own electronics and some surprisingly strong orchestrations – recorded in a way that really shows the evolution of the Carlos' style since the early days! In fact, there's a richness to the music that may well surpass the quality of the images on the screen – which has made the whole thing a surprisingly durable sci fi soundtrack over the years.
