Franco BixioFilm Music Of Franco Bixio (Deserto Di Fuoco/Instantanea Per Un Delitto/Diario Segreto/Il Tuo Piacere E Il Mio) ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
Four rare soundtracks from Italian composer Franco Bixio – appearing here on CD for the first time ever! First up is Deserto Di Fuoco – a score that begins with a dreamy wordless vocal theme, but then quickly moves into tenser moments – a kind of low-end, brooding approach to the music which is occasionally cut with some sweeter strings, yet still in a way that preserves the moody vibe of the other cuts! There's one "momento sexy" in the mix, but most of the tunes stay in this formation – kind of a mix of drama with slight currents of Italian warmth. Instantanea Per Un Delitto is a standout score right from the start – especially since the whole thing begins with a tune titled "I Want To Die" – a vocal number that's followed by a fair bit of other vocal tunes too – rockish numbers that almost feel like they were lifted from some Mike Curb/AIP soundtrack in the US – with titles that include "Back To My Baby", "My Sleeping Lady", "Pro9mise", "A Trip Around The World", and "Woman Pig". The soundtrack Diario Segreto Un Carcere Femminile follows – a mix of shorter tunes and warmer themes – sometimes in a lightly erotic mode, but also balanced with a bit of action too – and nice use of spare guitar and piano to evoke some nicely moody moments. There's a few tunes with fuller woodwinds and strings – a nice touch, and much more sensitive than usual for Bixio! Last up is the score for Il Tuo Piacere E'Il Mio – music that's filled with all sorts of weird touches – from spare recorder or harpsichord lines, to some offbeat churchy vocals – used on short tunes that end up with a pretty spooky vibe overall! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – done in the great quality we've really come to appreciate from the Quartet label. CD

Piero UmilianiL'Uomo Elettronico – Cosmic Electronic Environments From An Italian Synth Music Maestro 1972 to 1983 ... CD
Four Flies (Italy), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Weird and wonderful sounds from a very electric man – the mighty Piero Umiliani, an Italian composer who first rose to fame for a set of groundbreaking film scores in the 60s – then moved into even more experimental sound library work in the following decade! This set has Piero working in all sorts of cool electronic styles – never too outside or avant, but definitely in the darker side of his spectrum – although almost always with that playful sense of a tune that made his 60s music such a delight! The range of instruments varies – Umiliani clearly had a studio that was full of brand-new, top-shelf technologies – and titles are mostly from the mid 70s, with a few later cuts from 1983. Tunes include "Danza Magica", "Soundmaker Blues", "Fruitori", "Batticuore", "Sinistro Carillon", "Dolomiti", "Apocolaisse Atomica", "Description", "Lavorazione A Mare", and "Elettrone". Young Turks, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! As you can tell from the title, the work is music for a documentary soundtrack – and Washington really rises to the occasion with music of majesty – all jazz throughout, but mixed with some extra strings at times too – a bit like those fantastic instrumental moments that Bill Lee did for the early films of Spike – served up here with a similar sense of pride, power, and subtle righteousness! Other players include Rickey Washington on alto and flute, Ryan Porter on trombone, Dontae Winslow on trumpet, and Cameron Graves on piano and Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Take In The Story", "Shot Out Of A Cannon", "Song For Fraser", "Southside V1", "Detail", "Fashion Now & Then", "Connections", "Looking Forward", and "I Am Becoming". Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s/2021. New Copy ... $7.99 15.99
An unusual blend of classic country and original music – served up here in support of the Netflix film of the same name! We really dig the classic cuts – work that includes "Young Love" by Sonny James, "Hillbilly Boogie" by The Delmore Brothers, "The Three Bells" by The Browns, "Honeycomb" by Jimmie Rogers, "Wings Of A Dove" by Ferlin Husky, "Wishful Thinking" by Wynn Stewart, "He Says The Same Things To Me" by Skeeter Davis, and "Funny How Time Slips Away" by Billy Walker – plus a live version of "Little Bessie" by The Stanley Brothers. But the quality of the older music is matched in the new cuts "Washed In The Blood" and "Banks Of The Ohio" by Pokey LaFarge, then balanced by mellower soundtrack instrumentals from Saunder Jurrians and Danny Bensi. Four Flies (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $39.99 42.99
Sunny grooves with a fantastic sound – music that echoes some of our favorite Italian soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – but most of it previously unreleased! The work here is from undertapped sources of the period – not some of the oft-compiled songs from the Italian soundtrack/sound library reissue scene of the past decade or two – but instead lots of fresh tracks that really throw open the gates – with strong quality tracks that are awash in lots of groovy elements! Music is both acoustic and electric, often with a fair bit of jazz or bossa nova influences – and in contrast to some sound library collections that go for the darker side of the spectrum, these tracks are all as warm as you might guess from the title. Tracks include "Don Milani" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Cugine Mie" by Nico Fidenco, "Gideon" by Alberto Baldan Bembo, "Camorra" by Manuel De Sica, "Pensiero D'Amore" by Mario Migliardi, "Gisposta A Tutto" by Gianni Marchetti, "Mondo Di Notte Oggi" by Gianni Oddi Gianni Dell'Orso, "Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura" by Carlo Pes, and "Verso La Droga" by Sandro Brugnolini. Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $32.99 36.98
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso. Bosworth/Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Most of the music here is relatively gentle – seductive 70s themes played on piano, keyboards, guitar, and other light instrumentation – the kind of tunes that must have been beautiful slinking behind the products featured in the TV ads – which include Zenith TVs, Buick station wagons, Dannon yogurt, and Revlon perfumes! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". Serge Gainsbourg & Jean Claude VannierLes Chemins De Katmandou/Paris N'Existe Pas/La Bete Noire ... CD
Music Box (France), 1969/1983. New Copy ... $24.99 34.99
Great soundtrack work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – working here instrumentally alongside Jean Claude Vannier – the musical partner who helped Serge sound so funky at the end of the 60s! The set begins with 10 tracks from Les Chemins De Katmandou – a lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number! Next is Serge and Jean Claude working together again on Paris N'Existe Pas from the same year of 1969 – soundtrack material that's got a moodier vibe overall, with some really nice currents of offbeat sonic elements that come into play with the really catchy theme of the film! Tunes are all relatively short, and work together as a nice nine part suite of tracks! Last up is the later soundtrack for La Bete Noire, scored by Vannier alone in 1983 – very different work than usual from the arranger/composer – not a slinky sexy soundtrack, but instead an all-acoustic set that features some fantastic jazzy touches – including work from saxophonist Philippe Mate, and vibes and percussion from Bernard Lubat! The set features lots of piano, percussion, and very driving solos from Mate – and the main theme which almost feels like a Nino Rota melody for Fellini! CD

Herbie HancockDeath Wish - Original Soundtrack ... CD
Columbia/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A killer 70s soundtrack from Herbie Hancock! The record takes the funky style that Herbie was cutting with the Headhunters, and blends it with some more sophisticated scoring that's top in the 70s action and blacksploitation modes – perfect for the dark theme of the movie's story. There's loads of funky bits with strings gliding over the top, and some more open-ended numbers with the sort of odd instrumentation and jazzy riffing that you'd find in Herbie's wilder numbers from the time. Cuts include "Death Wish", "Paint Her Mouth", "Rich Country", "Striking Back", and "Last Stop" – and side two is the full "Suite Revenge". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD

Music Box (France), 1964. New Copy ... $24.99 34.99
Maurice Jarre is no stranger to a military soundtrack, but his work here is nicely different than the rest – maybe in part because the movie's a creative effort from director Henri Verneuil, with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the lead! There's some nice currents of whimsy and sentiment mixed in with the more serious dramatic numbers – and at times, the are some nicely fresh uses of familiar instruments, especially piano – in ways that make for a score that's full of a lot more surprises than you'd expect! CD features 26 tracks in all – and titles include "Dimanche Matin", "Les Rescapes", "Retour A La Ville", "Hopital De Fortune", "Embarcation Office", "Helen Et John", and "Mort De Maillat". CD

Angelo MichajlovSaxana – Girl On A Broomstick ... CD
Finders Keepers/B- Music, Early 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing psych funk score by Angelo Michajlov – a trippy, but nicely grooving set of space jazz & funk inflective 70s soundtrack grooves for Divka Na Kosteti – a Czechoslovakian flick about a teenage witch! The music is fantastic, a mix of some of the more cheeky, fun and funky sounds so prominent in the pulpier realms of international cinema – from organ that drone in parts, no doubt the "witchy" moments, to more of a hard grooving jazz funk mode – to oddball percussion, horn bursts and psychedelic effects. Finders Keepers presents the material excellently, with a number of chanted "spells" from the film's dialogue and a couple of tunes sung by the film's star, Petra Cernocka. Michajlov wrote the score, Marta Kubisova arranged and it's performed by the Karel Vlach Orchestra. Includes "Divka Na Kos Tete", "Dexm Po Multo Shumpoplex", "Algebraic Airbrush", "Ridiculous Cuniculus", "The 300 Year Itch", "A Good Honest Looneyhouse", "A Visit From The Heavies", "A Rabbit In Cage 6", "Hide And Sheik", "The Magic In A Single Rose" (sung by Petra Cernocka) and more – plus the CD bonus track "Saxana (Original Czeck 45 Single Version)". Ennio MorriconeCosa Avete Fatto A Solange? (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 31.99
A beautiful illustration of the balance of light and darkness in the best work of Ennio Morricone – and an obscure soundtrack that dances between both sides of the spectrum! The main theme is incredibly sweet – one of those lightly drifting Morricone numbers that features wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso – but other tunes then go much deeper into the depths – hitting odd tones, moody instrumental passages, and somber rhythms that are then surprisingly offset by lighter numbers that are peppered throughout the score. The instrumentation includes a number of unusual twists that are not typical of Morricone at the time – and titles include "Cadenze", "Aleatorio", "Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange", "Raccapriccio", "Una Tromba E La Sua Notte", "Fine Di Solange", and "Sottinitesi". Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 33.99
One of the darkest, moodiest soundtracks we've ever heard from Ennio Morricone – even in comparison to some of his atonal horror work of the 70s! The vibe here is almost 20th Century avant chamber – a bit like work from Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova, but even more experimental – as odd bits of sound samples are filtered through these dark sonic textures, string parts, and electronics – all with a style that's very musique concrete overall! Tracks are much longer than usual for a soundtrack too – and the record has an experimental greatness that really stands apart from the film. Titles include "Disordini", "Ordini", "Ergastolo", and "Memento". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Music Box (France), 1972. New Copy ... $26.99 34.99
A groovy soundtrack to a film we'd love to see – an obscure thriller that starred Henry Fonda and Yul Brynner – and which, like most of the Morricone-scored films of the period, has dropped from cinematic history, even though the wonderful soundtrack lives on! The style of the music runs between the two poles of work from Morricone at the time – with some cuts that are spare, quiet, and very pretty, and others that are fuller, more turgid, and filled with the kind of jagged touches that can make his soundtracks incredibly dark. The main theme – "Il Serpente" – is offered in two great versions, one spare and pretty, the other a bit more driving, but still pretty darn groovy. Other tracks include "Canzone Lontana", "Nadine", "Orazione", "Tema Per Una Donna Sola", and "Parata Militare". This great CD edition features 13 more bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 72 minutes of music! CD

A collection of classic horror soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone – mostly early 70s material that represent the maestro at the height of the early giallo genre! The tunes here are often a bit more obtuse, atonal, and abstract than some of Morricone's lighter grooves – and his work for the genre is arguably even more sophisticated and dark than the images on the screen – filled with complicated orchestrations, odd patterns of sound, and really striking instrumental moments. The tunes here aren't for the feint-of-heart – and they include some of Morricone's tensest recordings ever! The set features 16 tracks in all – from the soundtracks to Spasmo, Il Segreto, Il Gatto A Nove Code, Il Serpente, La Corta Notte Delle Bambole Di Vetro, Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura, Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange, Senza Movente, and Le Foto Proibite. A stunning set that's packed with some of our favorite music from the soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone – that special style he created in the late 60s, as a way of blending together influences from jazz, bossa nova, and other instrumental styles – hardly the sleepy lounge music of the American scene – as the format here is always full of touches that are subtle yet complex! The music is wonderful – warm, but never too sentimental – groovy, but never in a cheap or cloying way – and always presented with a focus on unusual instrumentation, inventive arrangements, and production modes that make the the familiar seem strange – even while still coming across with a warm and appealing vibe. The 2LP set is a beautiful package – and includes tracks from Verushka, La Donna Invisible, Gli Intoccabili, D'Amore Si Muor, Scusi FAccio L'Amore, L'Ailibi, Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, Citta Violenta, and Come Impari Ad Amare Le Donne. Not the trashy kind of passion you might expect from the cover – but instead, one of the most trademark sides of legendary film composer Ennio Morricone – his talent for building a tune up slowly, almost out of nowhere, then letting it flow gently with a wonderful sense of space and sound! These cuts move between the bossa and jazz-inspired modes of his late 60s soundtracks, and that richer style that he would use to great international fame in the 80s – making the music here a great 70s bridge, with some wonderful tracks from a variety of Italian films of the time. The set features work from the films Il Giro Del Mondo, Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange, Le Due Sagioni Della Vita, Amanti D'Oltretomba, Cuore Di Mamma, I Figli Chiedono Perche, Per Le Antiche Scale, Maddalena, Mi Vedrai Tornare, and other lost classics – 21 tracks in all. Dark genius from the legendary Ennio Morricone – one of the most important film composers of the 20th Century, and a master in just about any style! The work here represents a shift that Morricone made into darker modes as the 70s approached – sounds that stepped off from some of the moodier moments of his 60s western scores – especially those times when he might abstract the instrumentation, or use some elements borrowed from his experience in the Italian avant garde. These tracks are still tuneful, but also have a moody complexity that's breathtaking – and which would rewrite the rules for Hollywood soundtracks, as well as the Italian scene, for decades to come. The 2LP set features tracks from the films Il Segreto, Copkiller, Le Foto Proibite, Il Trio Infernale, I Sopravvissuti, La Corta Notte Delle Bambole, Citta Violent, Dimensioni Sonore, and Il Serpente – all wrapped up in a beautiful package! Music Box (France), 1981/1982/1988. New Copy ... $24.99 34.99
Three different military soundtracks from Philippe Sarde – all brought together here in a single set! La Maison Assassinee is the latest of the three – and has this wonderful quality that resonates strongly with some of Sarde's best orchestral work of the 70s – almost sentimental at times, with this beautiful blend of strings and woodwinds – hardly what you'd guess from the title! Next is his work for Allons Z'Enfants – an orchestral score that has richer, more lush moments – really bringing out the more symphonic elements in Sarde's skills, as he works with orchestrations from Peter Knight, who really knows how to bring in some fuller brass passages, but in a way that's never too clunky or hamfisted, so that they slide right in with the strings. Knight also handled the orchestrations on L'Honneur D'Un Capitaine, but the music has a very different feel – more solitary at times, although still orchestral – with these currents of thoughtfulness, of the sort that made Sarde's work of the 70s so wonderfully striking. CD features 25 tracks in all – and notes in French and English. CD

Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

Magically moody music from Richard Band – sounds that are maybe a bit less creepy than image on the cover, but which transform nicely as the set goes on! Many of these cuts are longish – almost like mini-suites of soundtrack themes – often with strings used in these nicely-stepping ways – familiar and dramatic at some points, but more offbeat at others – with the most amazing highlights being these weird vocal bits – which sound like more atmospheric musings from the folks who live in Whoville from the Grinch cartoon! One of the most compelling albums in years from Billy Bang – and that's really saying a lot, given how much compelling music he's recorded! The set is put together in conjunction with a fascinating documentary on Bang's life, music, and time spent fighting in Vietnam – an experience that stayed with him for decades, scarred him, and which here has become a way of reaching back into the past, into the culture, as a way to find some sort of personal healing! The result is fantastic – as Bang's amazing work on violin comes in contact with a variety of Vietnamese artists – including Tran Manh Tuan on tenor, Duc Dau of the Phu Dong Family Band, and even the larger Hanoi Symphony Orchestra – all different musical partners who really help Billy expand his sound and resolve some of his decades-old conflicts – presented alongside some spoken passages from the film that are very striking, and a few solo numbers too. BB, 1963. Sealed ... $9.99
A very groovy musical – one done quite far from the bright lights of Broadway, in early 60s LA – with lyrics and presentation that offer up a wry postwar commentary on the city! The whole thing has the feel of some of the hipper off-Broadway material of the time – very witty little tunes, penned by Billy Barnes in a Tommy Wolf/Fran Landesman mode – handled by the cast with a nicely intimate feel that really makes the lyrical subtleties come through nicely. Instrumentation is relatively spare, and cast members include Ken Berry, Joyce Jameson, Tom Hatten, Sylvia Lewis, and Steve Franken – singing songs that include "The Pink Pussycat School", "Covina", "Keep Away", "LA Is", "Weather Report", "Does Anybody Here Love Me", and "I'm Glad I Call It Home". Decca, 1965. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the greatest soundtracks ever from the great John Barry – a set of tracks that echoes some of his famous modes from James Bond films, yet also has a unique quality all its own! Barry's got a strongly jazzy sensibility here – and spaces out some great instrumentation with the same sensibilities used in the equally great music for The Knack! Staff aren't listed, but there's clearly some great Brit jazz players in the lineup – given the record's key use of vibes and tenor solos – as well as this very cool slow-plucked guitar with a noisy, echoey quality. The sound is brilliant – everything you'd hope for in the best 60s soundtracks – and titles include "The Ipcress File", "Alone In Three Quarter Time", "A Man Alone", "If You're Not Clean I'll Kill You", "Goodbye Harry", and "Alone Blues". John BarryWalkabout (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Other titles include "The Three Of Us", "Walkabout", "The Children", "The Journey", "Stranded", and "Night In The Outback". LP, Vinyl record album

John Barry/Elizabeth TaylorElizabeth Taylor In London ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A weird little record from John Barry – the soundtrack to a 1963 television special recorded by Elizabeth Taylor at the height of her early popularity, and featuring Taylor reciting a variety of poems and speeches over music by Barry! There's a relatively high concept feel to the album – as Barry's backings are fairly string-laden and serious, penned to match the mood of Taylor's presentation of material written by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Pitt, Winston Churchill, and Queen Victoria. And although Taylor speaks on about half the record, the best tracks here are actually the instrumental ones – which have more of the depth of Barry's serious soundtrack work from the time, and manage to have their own sense of presence apart from the star quality of Liz on the set. Arrangements are by Johnnie Spence, and titles include "Elizabeth", "London Theme Jazz Waltz", "Queen Elizabeth At Tilbury", "Queen Victoria", "English Garden", "The Fire Of London", "Lovers & Browning", and "London At Dawn". Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A sweet little soundtrack by John Barry – very different than the full-on style he used for James Bond – but equally groovy in its own sort of way! The music was written for a spy thriller starring Alec Guiness, George Segal, and Max Von Sydow – a moody film that's handled here by Barry with a spacey quality that's mighty nice – lots of isolated instruments floating along, sometimes with weird effects that are almost watery – all in a space that's somewhere between Barry's work for The Knack, and that new sense of space that Morricone was bringing into 60s soundtracks. The result is a real treasure – one of Barry's best film scores – and titles include "Autobahn March", "Downtown", "Oktober/Walk From The River", "Quiller Caught/The Fight", "Quiller & The Bomb", and the theme "Wednesday's Child", sung by Matt Monro. Hilarious! This is the soundtrack to a goofy late 60s shocker film about the time when hippies and young folks would take over America. Les Baxter handled the musical score for the film, but the real treat is the schlocky rock tracks – written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, with arrangements by Mike Curb in that fuzzy Tower/AIP mode! The lyrics are hysterical, but also oddly catchy, even though they're trying to make fun of 60s rock. Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A killer little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than the usual blacksploitation set, but still pretty funky overall! The film Black Girl was a surprisingly sensitive movie directed by Ossie Davis in the early 70s – not as much about action as it was about the everyday life, and the hopes and dreams of the lead characters – all of which made for some really well-rounded music, of the sort you'd find on some of the other great Fantasy Records soundtracks of the time, especially the classic Cornbread Earl & Me score. Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin put together the whole thing, and the album's a mix of hip instrumental tracks with some other vocal ones – a really nice range that draws from singers like Betty Everett, Rodger Collins, and JJ Malone – and jazz players like Sonny Stitt and John Hunt (plus organ from Merl Saunders on one cut.) Titles include "BJ's Step", "Black Girl", "Sister", "Earl (Still A Pearl)", "Mothers Day Song", "Power", "Get Me To The Bridge", "Chock-lite Puddin", and "Black Girl Cue". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD

Marion Brown is a stunning saxophonist whose music seems to know no bounds – always full of these hidden corners that the mainstream missed back in the day – which is definitely the case with this fantastic rare soundtrack session from the end of the 60s! The music is unlike most of what Brown was recording during the period – and features a very unusual lineup that includes Steve McCall on drums and tambour, Barre Phillips on bass, Gunter Hampel on vibes and bass clarinet, Ambrose Jackson on trumpet, and Alain Corneau on claves – players with a wide variety of approaches and backgrounds, which certainly comes through in the music! Although Brown first rose to prominence on ESP and Impulse Records on our shores during the 60s, his time overseas was maybe even more fruitfully productive – as you'll hear in the breathtaking array of sounds he creates with his group here – titles that include "Song For Serge & Helle", "Cascatelles", "En Arriere", "Ye Ye", and "Boat Rock". Yet as with most of the great sound library albums of the time, the music is way more than conventional – as guitar, organ, bass, and drums are arranged, recorded, and produced in very unusual ways – with a really open ear towards the fuller, larger sound – which includes great effects and other elements along the way! Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film! The soundtrack kicks off with the indispensable prologue from the movie – with the old man telling the ghost story with just the sparest of background keyboards – and other titles include "Theme From The Fog", "Rocks At Drakes' Bay", "Tommy Tells Of Ghost Ships", "Flack In The Sanctuary", "Dane", "An Evil Plan", "Morgue", "The Fog Approaches", "Revenge", "The Fog Enters Town" and more. One of the more obscure entries in the caveman comedy genre that cropped up briefly at the end of the 60s – a set of very groovy tunes for a movie that has the females going on a sex strike to keep the men from fighting! There's very little in the music to tie the film to Lysistrata – as the tunes are delightfully whimsical, and move through a mix of bossa-styled jazz, mod rock moments, and a few funky touches – all in that best style put forth by the Italian scene in the 60s! The score has a few standout fuzzy/funky guitar bits, and maybe best of all are the vocal numbers – sung by Gli Alluminogeni, and based around this "Troglomen" theme – which has cool chanting in a very rhythmic way. 32 tracks in all – and a number of bonus tracks too! A lost treasure from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – material recorded as the soundtrack for the Canadian film Le Chat Danse Le Sac – which features new recordings of material that Coltrane had done in previous years, but really updated by the fresh version of this group! Although the music was used in the film, which was an art house hit at best, it's never been issued on record before – and in fact, its existence was something of a mystery until not that long ago – quite a surprise, given that the sessions were done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and have a quality level that really matches the Impulse Records best by these musicians! The tunes are almost like this amazing bridge between the mid 60s Impulse years and the Coltrane sound at the start of the decade on Atlantic – as the grooves are modal, and most music is more inside than the group was hitting by 1965 – yet still burning with that searching spirit that made them so great. The lineup, of course, features John Coltrane on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the whole thing is an instant key addition to the catalog of this tremendous quartet. According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". This amazing 3LP version features one never-issued track – "L'Interrogatoire De Julien" – plus 16 more tracks from the sessions for the recordings, and a booklet of notes!
