Don EllisMusic From Other Galaxies & Planets – Featuring The Main Title Theme From Star Wars ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... $19.99
A great little set – way more than you might think from the cover! Ostensibly, this one's a cash-in album for the mid 70s Star Wars soundtrack craze – but since it's handled by Ellis, it's got a surprisingly funky feel, with many tracks that recall his own great soundtrack work of the time. In fact, the album only has 2 tracks from the Star Wars soundtrack – despite the fact that the logo for the movie is displayed largely on the cover – and all other tracks are originals by Ellis, handled with a sweet mix of electric funk and funky jazz soloing! Lots of nice keyboards, and titles include "Star Wars", "Orion's Sword", "Eros", "Lyra", "Ursa", "Vulcan", "Crypton" and "Arcturas". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD

Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $13.99
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD

✨✧ Modern Jazz QuartetMusic From Odds Against Tomorrow ... CD
United Artists, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant album through and through – not just a standout from the late 50s years of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but also a compelling soundtrack composed entirely by pianist John Lewis! Lewis' writing was always a key part of the group's sound, but here it really comes into its own – shaping out these dark, moody little scenes for the movies – which work equally well as little sound pieces on their own – still jazz, yet often moving towards something deeper and more evocative too! The vibes of Milt Jackson are a masterpiece in economy – ringing out gently and filling up the space with each movement they make – and titles include "Skating In Central Park", "A Social Call", "A Cold Wind Is Blowing", and "Cue #9". Pornosonic, 2004. Used ... $12.99
The second set of tracks from the Pornosonic project – and like the first, packaged in a way that makes you think the music was lifted from an older porno soundtrack! Despite that too-easy gimmick, the album's actually a nice one – lean, mean electric funk with plenty of 70s touches that include wah wah guitar and sweet keyboard riffs – laid out in a mode that's never too complicated or kitschy, and which actually has a great funky appeal that goes way past the gimmick of the set. Titles include "Peach Fuzz", "Dick Goes Down", "Dirty Pimp", "Peach Pie", "Get Peach Fuzz", "Dick Saves Peach", and "Cream Streets Outro". (Deep Funk, Soundtracks) CD

Claude BollingBorsalino/Borsalino & Co (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Music Box (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99
One of the spookiest soundtracks ever crafted by one of our favorite film composers of all time! Francois DeRoubaix always had this amazing style to his music – unlike anyone else, especially in the way he could blend together spare acoustic elements and unusual sonic and electronic touches! There's a very intimate feel to the record – almost as if Francois is performing most of the sounds in the studio himself – balancing a guitar line with a keyboard fill, a bowed bass bit with drums, soaring strings with trumpet, and so on – occasionally hitting some funky touches that really keep things interesting – and which makes some of DeRoubaix best work on a par with the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Titles include "The Countess Kiss", "Phantom Organ & Piano", "Pursuit On The Dunes Of Ostend", "Accident & Cymbalum", "Love On The Rails", "Red Lips", "Ballad In Bruges", and "The Dunes Of Ostend Flagellation". Also features two bonus tracks not used in the film – "Dracula 68 Woodstock" and "The Bruges Band". LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Myers/Hans ZimmerHistoire D'O – Numero 2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Music Box (France), 1984. New Copy 2 CDs ... $26.99
The slinky, sexy follow-up to the original cinema version of The Story Of O – shot in the 80s, with a musical score by Stanley Myers to match the vibe of that later decade – and served up with a few contributions from a young Hanz Zimmer as well! The shift from the 70s to the 80s is also a shift in the way that erotic scoring was taking place on the European scene – more reliance than ever on keyboards, less use of sax or violin to signify moments of love, and also maybe more touches borrowed from some of the horror films of the period – which themselves were also starting to get pretty darn sexy! Myers does a great job of evoking the spirit of the original, while also moving things forward stylistically – and titles include "Married Love", "The World Of O", "Initiation Of Carole", "Triumph Of O", "Deviation", "Love In 45 Seconds", and "Statues Of The Night" – plus the vocal theme "Never Will You Know", performed by Veronique Lortal. Plus, this 2CD version adds in 26 more tracks to the original album – all additional music done for the film score, and a French version of the theme by Lortal! CD

Music Box (France), 1978. Used ... $18.99
A groovy French-Italian co-production from the 70s – one that's scored with a very whimsical score by Piero Piccioni! The record's got more of an Italian comedy feel than French work of the time – from a disco-inspired vocal theme at the start, to some sweet slinky numbers in the middle, and a few more playful melodies that kind of update an older Italian comedic mode! Piccioni uses a fair bit of then-contemporary instrumental elements – warmer production than before, a mix of keyboards and rhythms, and even a breathy female singer named Emelyne on a few tracks. CD features 19 tracks in all – and notes on the music and film in English and French! CD

Nino RotaProvo D'Orchestra (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Music Box (France), 1979. New Copy ... $24.99
A fantastic Fellini soundtrack from Nino Rota – one that holds on to some of the best styles that the pair created in their rich legacy for film – but which also takes the music in a great new direction too! The sound is more orchestral – as you might guess from the title – and the film features a dysfunctional orchestra stands in as a metaphor for the Italian government – an ensemble who play Rota's music in this halting style, sometimes broken up with their own comments in their inability to come together – as the record builds with fantastic readings of some themes, using the best Rota modes on woodwinds and strings. Titles include the long "Prova D'Orchestra Le Interviste" – plus "Valzerino No 72", "Attesta", "Galopp", "Risaltine Maliziose", and "I Gemelli Allo Specchio". CD features 9 more bonus tracks – a great extension of the second half of the material on the original release! CD

Philippe SardeMille Milliards De Dollars/Conte De La Folie Ordinaire/Le Crabe-Tambour ... CD
Music Box (France), 1977/1981/1982. New Copy ... $13.99
A trio of really lovely soundtracks from the great French composer Philippe Sarde – each of them a magical illustration of his wonderful talents! Mille Milliards De Dollars has a fantastic use of piano throughout – jazzy, but warm and sentimental around the edges – really the dominant instrument amidst some lighter orchestrations, and used in ways that make for some of the most tuneful, seductive moments in Sarde's legacy from the time! Conte De La Folie Ordinaire is an unusual film – one that stars the great Ben Gazzara in a set of scenes adapted from the stories of Charles Bukowski – set to music by Sarde that often evokes a sense of place in the story, with both Mexican and bluegrass elements in the songs. Last up is Le Crabe-Tambour – Sarde at his most dramatic, scoring for a military thriller – and using lots of brass in very offbeat ways! CD

Four Flies (Italy), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
One of the funkiest soundtracks we've ever heard from Alessandro Alessandroni – a set that clearly shows he'd been listening to the score for Shaft, as well as a host of 70s sound library music too! There's lots of great Italian cop/crime grooves on the set – done at an understated level that's almost better than more familiar work of the genre – often strongly focused on the core rhythms, which are lean and plenty darn funky – bad-stepping with instrumentation that's often small combo funky jazz more than it is the bigger orchestrations of American cop scores. Titles include "Cop's Blood", "Amusement", "Duke Soul Jazz", "Tema Di Susie", "Club Jazz", "Palance", "Knell", "Sbirro In Fuga", and "Luxury". Features the never-issued bonus cut – "Tema Di Susie #2 (suspance version)". LP, Vinyl record album

The soundtrack to Allen's famous film of the early 70s, based on a play that he's also written. Most of the record is dialogue from the film – or really monologues, since Allen talking is the main crux of the action. Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". (Rock, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Burt Bacharach/Peter MatzOn The Flip Side ... LP
Decca, 1967. Very Good+ ... $6.99
An obscure and wonderful chapter in the career of Burt Bacharach – material penned for a 1967 TV musical starring Rick Nelson and Joanie Sommers – all of it perfect 60s Bacharach pop all the way through! The plot of the musical is a bit silly, but the performance isn't – tightly-crafted vocal numbers that often mix Burt's older Brill Building style with a bit more of a Sunshine Pop kind of approach. Although penned by Bacharach, the music is actually conducted by Peter Matz – who does a great job of retaining the maestro's sense of space and timing, but also unlocks some bolder flourishes in the tunes, and manages to get some really amazing vocal performances out of both Sommers and Nelson! There's a sophistication here that goes beyond the roots of both singers – and the record's filld with lesser-known tracks that still sparkle with plenty of Bacharach brilliance – including "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", "They're Gonna Love It", "Juanita's Place Montage", "Try To See It My Way", "They Don't Give Medals", "Fender Mender", and "Juanita's Place". Tresor National (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 29.99
A fantastic porn soundtrack from the Canadian scene at the start of the 70s – a wicked little record from the time when even a schlocky movie could be trusted to have some pretty great music in the mix! The styles here echo some of the modes in the Vampyros Lesbos world of Jess Franco films – funky drums, great organ lines, and plenty of trippy guitar – but there's also the added use of harmony vocals on a few cuts, with female singers who give the whole thing a warmly joyous quality, and really sets the whole thing apart from the rest! The record's got a great sense of variety, including some really cool distorted moog on one track – and titles include "Felicia Nova", "Emmene Moi", "Harizap", "Chanson Pour Candy", "Cago 9", "Sans Raison", "Ouvre Ton Ame", and "Je Ne T'Attendrai Pas". An excellent collection of work from the great John Barry – one that focuses on his famous contributions for the James Bond films – but also includes other soundtrack and instrumental material as well! The set begins with the John Barry Plays 007 record – a brilliant album that not only features some instrumental soundtrack themes, but also includes some great mod Barry instrumentals from the 60s – kind of a nice link to his sophisticated film music, and some of his smaller combo work! Titles include "Kinky", "Fancy Dance", "007", "From Russia With Love", "Big Shield", "Aliki", "Monkey Feathers", and "The London Theme". Next are two tracks from Elizabeth Taylor In London – "Lovers & Browning", with a recitation by Taylor – plus the jazzy instrumental "The London Waltz". Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A pretty compelling John Barry score – written for this strange semi-comedy which starred George C Scott and Julie Christie, and which was directed by Richard Lester. The music is a mixture of groovy themes and slower numbers that still have a modulated groovy approach – strings gliding with a gentle submerged groove, in a warm easy fashion, but not as dramatic as more conventional soundtracks. There's plenty of great moments on the set – and the soundtrack's a good example of the way that Barry increasingly began to explore space within his compositions as the 60s went on. Titles include "Eat Topless", "Comprehendo", "Petulia", "Motel", "Highway 101", and "Friends Of The Evergreen". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Here's a strange one – the 1964 soundtrack for a film starring Robert Mitchum, credited to Lionel Bart, but actually featuring a fair bit of work by John Barry – who wrote a few tracks, and seems to handle the overall arrangements and conducting. Much of the music is period-based, but still nicely jazzy and swinging – not as all out groovy as Barry's Bond work, but with some nice orchestral jazz touches that are hipper than you'd expect from Bart. Ed Bogas/Sonny Stitt/Merl SaundersBlack Girl – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A killer little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than the usual blacksploitation set, but still pretty funky overall! The film Black Girl was a surprisingly sensitive movie directed by Ossie Davis in the early 70s – not as much about action as it was about the everyday life, and the hopes and dreams of the lead characters – all of which made for some really well-rounded music, of the sort you'd find on some of the other great Fantasy Records soundtracks of the time, especially the classic Cornbread Earl & Me score. Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin put together the whole thing, and the album's a mix of hip instrumental tracks with some other vocal ones – a really nice range that draws from singers like Betty Everett, Rodger Collins, and JJ Malone – and jazz players like Sonny Stitt and John Hunt (plus organ from Merl Saunders on one cut.) Titles include "BJ's Step", "Black Girl", "Sister", "Earl (Still A Pearl)", "Mothers Day Song", "Power", "Get Me To The Bridge", "Chock-lite Puddin", and "Black Girl Cue". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD

A real mish-mash of terrible music (then again, wasn't the movie pretty terrible too?) – but the record is noteworthy for the track "Living In America", which was a bit of a comeback tune for James Brown – and not a bad little number when you think about it. Of course, the rest of the world was pretty taken by Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger", which is about as anthemic as you can get for any 80s sountrack tune! CD

Roscoe Lee BrowneHand Is On The Gate ... LP
Verve, 1966. Sealed 2LP ... $5.99
Pretty interesting stuff – almost a who's who of African American socially conscious singing actors in the early 60s – with a cast that includes James Earl Jones, Moses Gunn, Leon Bibb, Josephine Premice, Cicely Tyson, and Roscoe Lee Browne, who also arranged and directed the whole affair. Even cooler is the fact that the music was written by Bill Lee and the great Stuart Scharf – and played by the pair with help from Seldon Powell on flute and Floyd Williams on percussion. The performance is part musical, part spoken – a string of passages from writers that include Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, WC Handy, Julian Bond, Le Roi Jones, and others – working together beautifully in a very righteous, slightly radical theater piece. Chico Buarque/Nara Leao/Maria BethaniaQuando O Carnaval Chegar ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $16.99
A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together! Roy BuddInternecine Project ... LP
Pye/Trunk (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $29.99
That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time". ✨✧ Nicholas CarrasDoll Squad (green vinyl pressing – with bonus DVD) ... LP
Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A sexy little film, with a sexy little soundtrack to match – just the right blend of funk and crime modes you'd expect for a movie that was a precursor to Charlie's Angels! The Doll Squad were a lot trashier, though – and it really shows in some of the music here, which has a great early 70s exploitation vibe at times, and some surprisingly nice jazz currents at others – much more in the vein of some hip Italian work of the period, especially with the instrumentation. Most numbers are quite short, but the set features lots of these cool cuts coming together nicely, with a bit of dialog too – and the set includes the vocal number "Song For Sabrina" – plus "Jealous Lady", "Doll Squad Theme", "Big Boom", "Double Trouble", "The Big Switch", and "Freedom Beat". ✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiQuesto Si Che E' Amore (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1978. Used ... $18.99
Stelvio Cipriani works some mighty romantic magic here – swirling together strings and keyboards at a level that makes the record one of his best from the time – done with those slinky, sexy touches that really helped Cipriani come into his own during the 70s! There's a few funky moments – but honestly the best bits are those tracks that kind of lazily drift along with the keyboard lines – with kind of a steam, sultry, late afternoon sort of feel – as if you're laying around waiting for a proper point to go down to a cafe for your first cocktail of the evening! CD features a total of 27 tracks – including a few vocal numbers – for a total of almost 75 minutes of music. CD

Stelvio CiprianiSbirro – La Tua Legge E Lenta La Mia No (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
There's few folks we love more for a cop/crime soundtrack than the great Stelvio Cipriani – as the 70s Italian maestro always has a way of making things groove, but with these cool sophisticated touches that make his music more distinct than most! This set's clearly got an influence from American crime scores from a few years before, but Stelvio takes things in all these cool directions of his own – which include putting in a nice sense of space on the mellower groovers, shifting up some of the instrumentation from the usual, and also bringing in his great ear for a keyboard part at just the right moment! This issue of the album features three bonus tracks not on any other reissue – and the sound quality is wonderful. CD

John AddisonTom Jones ... LP
United Artists, 1963. Sealed ... $1.99
A period score, but one with plenty of groovy touches – a masterpiece of 60s film scoring from the great John Addison! Addison's music for the famous Tony Richardson version of Tom Jones is every bit as playful as the images on the screen – with only marginal aesthetics of the period of the story, and instead lots of romping melodies, carried out on horn parts, percussive passages, and even some cool harpsichord bits. Most of the tunes move quite quickly – as does the action on screen – and titles include "Sylvan Misadventures", "Ladies Are Irresistible", "Love Theme From Tom Jones", "Wine & Women", "If He Swing By The String", and "The Squire Steps In". Alessandro AlessandroniRitmo Dell'Industria #2 ... LP
Grand Prix/BTF (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
The sound of industry, circa 1969 Italy – which means that everything sounds a heck of a lot groovier than you might expect! Soundtrack genius Alessandro Alessandroni handled the album – and it's completely fantastic right from the very first note – nothing like an industrial album, nor even some of the peppier "industry themed" sound library sets of the European postwar theme – and instead, the music is full of jazzy elements and cool wordless vocals – especially those scatting styles you'd know from Alessandroni's work with I Cantori Modern! Tremendous throughout – and quite possibly one of the grooviest albums the composer has ever given us. Titles include "Moto Blues", "Dialogando", "Circolazione", "Basso Regime", "Vie Motrici", "Escursione", and "Numero Uno". (Sound Library, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

Alessandro AlessandroniTrip Around The World ... LP
Stella/Saar Milano (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Beautiful sounds from one of the coolest Italian composers of all time – one of our go-to favorites for both soundtrack and sound library material! This set has Alessandro Alessandroni hitting some sweet 70s modes – funky at times, slinky and sexy at others – all with this fantastic ear for sound and space, with a quality level that really sets him apart – and which makes this totally obscure gem every bit as great as some of the key Italian cinematic classics from the period! Imagine – you're working in the very solitary space of a sound library, knowing that you're going to make a record that will never be for sale in the record racks – yet you completely bring your a-game to the proceedings. That's what makes Alessandroni such a giant – and we're sure you'll agree once you hear this music! The set features some great harmonica bits from Gianfranco Di Lelio, plus cool keyboards, guitar, and titles that include "My Sitar", "Seven Steps", "A Day In The Sun", "Oceano", "Everest", "Beach Party", "Summer Breeze", "Desert Inn", and "Love On The Sand". Davie Allan & The Arrows/The Hands Of TimeWild Angels – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $1.99
Classic kitschy biker material from Davie Allan and The Arrows – one of the best-ever groups to play on schlocky soundtracks during the 60s! There's lots of guitar and lots of fuzz – and guessing from the photos of the movie, the music was the best thing about it! Toddler Mike Curb put the whole thing together – but the vibe is much more like some of Allan's excellent guitar instrumental albums of the time – apart from the few more standard rock band tracks you'd find in Curb's other productions from the period. Most of the album's instrumental Arrows work – and tracks include "The Chase", "Bongo Party", "Blues Theme", "Theme From Wild Angels", and "The Unknown Rider" – plus the vocal cuts "Theme From The Wild Angels" by The Visitors and "Midnight Rider" by The Hands Of Time. An amazing companion to the soundtrack album from the film Solaris – an extended suite of tracks that works in a very similar way – with electronics layered in these beautiful, hypnotic modes – sometimes noisy, sometimes pleasant – always compelling throughout, thanks to the visionary music of Edward Artemiev! This lovely package features a cool gatefold cover, with the images from the Italian poster of the film from the 70s – but the mindblowing music on the record is the real appeal – an extended suite of electronic sounds, in 17 movements! Two lost spy soundtracks on one set – both of them pretty darn rare, and pretty darn great! The Saint was Roger Moore's first big claim to fame, and Secret Agent starred a young Patrick McGoohan in his years before The Prisoner – and both shows features music by Edwin Astley, in keeping with the British origin of the programs, done in a cool 60s spy mode that's halfway between John Barry and Lalo Schifrin! The work on the set is great – a real treat to discover, and filled with fresh touches that put Astley right up there with all the other 60s spy greats in our book. LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A schlocky film, but one with a great soundtrack – thanks to the low budget genius of composer Nicholas Carras! The music is surprisingly filled with rich elements – light strings at some points, rumbling percussion, vibes, and what seems to be some electronics – but which is really just an electric violin, run through a set of effects! The result is great, and the music has far more drama than you might expect away from the screen – maybe even more so, as it stands here as a top-rate sonic adventure, whereas the film might not make such a claim! Titles include "Rock Man Rock", "In The Caves", "Minds Over Men", "Sweethearts On Parade", "Do Or Die", "Leatha Level", and "Spider Monster". LP, Vinyl record album

Trunk (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $25.99
A really great electronic soundtrack – contemporary, but served up with a very spare, electronic feel that takes us back to some of the best horror gems of the 80s! If you're a fan of the music for Stranger Things or Good Time, you'll find plenty to love here – as Alec Cheer works in a keyboard-heavy style that's awash with waves of synth and spare layers of sound – maybe sometimes slightly warmer than the music of either of those references, but with an equally compelling sound! Titles include "Evil Ways", "The Night Belongs To Us", "Protective Spell", "Morning", "Hunters", "Kickstart", and "Confusion". LP, Vinyl record album

Stelvio CiprianiIl Fauno Di Marmo ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. Used ... $18.99
Few folks can do a sexy 70s soundtrack as great as Stelvio Cipriani – and this excellent album is definitely proof of that fact! The music is laidback, mellow, and moves with this slow-stepping approach that really grabs us right from the start – especially given the album's use of electric piano and bass over some of the sparest instrumental passages! Although the plot is relatively spooky, the music feels more like some late afternoon love fest – with all those warm, erotic tones that Cipriani does so well – perfectly produced in a 70s way that never gets too cheesy. The CD features 21 tracks, great remastering, and notes on the film in Italian and English. CD

Stelvio CiprianiLa Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno/Processo Per Direttissima ... CD
Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
Two rare 70s gems from the great Stelvio Cipriani – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno – a record that begins with some of the slinkier modes that we love in Cipriani's music, but which also gets nicely funky at points too – almost always graced by the kind of keyboard lines that make Stelvio such a standout! The keys include electric harpsichord, organ, and what sounds like some of that oddly-tuned piano that Ennio Morricone might use – flowering out in this beautifully balanced mix of modes. Processo Per Direttissima is a film about terrorism and police brutality, but one that gets this wonderfully sweet score from Cipriani – served up in flowing basslines, light percussion, gentle strings, and the kind of forward-moving elements we love so much in Stelvio's music – a quality here that sounds much more like his love or erotic scores than you'd guess from such a thriller! CD features 25 tracks in all – over 70 minutes of music. CD

We love Italian composer Stelvio Cipriani for his cop, crime, and erotic soundtracks of the 70s – and he sounds equally great here in the setting of a rare sound library album from the same time! The album's got no proper title or cover, but it's a wonderfully rich batch of music that's especially strong in the slinky/sexy Cipriani mode – with great keyboards and woodwinds carving out some themes so strong, you'd swear you heard them in a European film of the time! Things never get too funky, but they're also never sleepy at all either – and titles include "Hippy Love", "Fantasma Spiritoso", "Orizzonti Fatati", "Danza Degli Gnomi", "Orchidea Nello Spazio", "Incontro Di Fate", and "Rimani Amore".
