Franco BixioFilm Music Of Franco Bixio (Deserto Di Fuoco/Instantanea Per Un Delitto/Diario Segreto/Il Tuo Piacere E Il Mio) ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $39.99
Four rare soundtracks from Italian composer Franco Bixio – appearing here on CD for the first time ever! First up is Deserto Di Fuoco – a score that begins with a dreamy wordless vocal theme, but then quickly moves into tenser moments – a kind of low-end, brooding approach to the music which is occasionally cut with some sweeter strings, yet still in a way that preserves the moody vibe of the other cuts! There's one "momento sexy" in the mix, but most of the tunes stay in this formation – kind of a mix of drama with slight currents of Italian warmth. Instantanea Per Un Delitto is a standout score right from the start – especially since the whole thing begins with a tune titled "I Want To Die" – a vocal number that's followed by a fair bit of other vocal tunes too – rockish numbers that almost feel like they were lifted from some Mike Curb/AIP soundtrack in the US – with titles that include "Back To My Baby", "My Sleeping Lady", "Pro9mise", "A Trip Around The World", and "Woman Pig". The soundtrack Diario Segreto Un Carcere Femminile follows – a mix of shorter tunes and warmer themes – sometimes in a lightly erotic mode, but also balanced with a bit of action too – and nice use of spare guitar and piano to evoke some nicely moody moments. There's a few tunes with fuller woodwinds and strings – a nice touch, and much more sensitive than usual for Bixio! Last up is the score for Il Tuo Piacere E'Il Mio – music that's filled with all sorts of weird touches – from spare recorder or harpsichord lines, to some offbeat churchy vocals – used on short tunes that end up with a pretty spooky vibe overall! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – done in the great quality we've really come to appreciate from the Quartet label. CD

Brian EnoFilm Music 1976 to 2020 ... CD
Astralwerks, Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Many years back, Brian Eno gave us a record called Music For Films – a set that came out during his initial run of Ambient recordings, showing us how strong his instrumental creations could be when and if applied to a cinematic mode! The tracks there were half imagined works for film – and those of us who loved Eno were always hoping that it would lead to more prominent scoring for the electrosonic genius. Turns out, that happened anyway – as this set of 17 tracks will attest – a rising Eno role in the film soundtrack world, served up on contributions from big productions and lesser-known gems. The set features work from films that include Heat, We Are As Gods, Trainspotting, Married To The Mob, Jubilee, Top Boy, Sebastiane, Hammerhead, Rams, Lovely Bones, Francis Bacon's Arena, and Cool World – a surprisingly rich array of material! RCA, 1970. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Cool Mancini work from the start of the 70s – a record that offers a nice step forward from his scoring styles of the 60s, with a slightly orchestral feel as well! The arrangements here are full, but still have a nice sort of focus – and include solos by players like Mancini on piano, Jimmy Rowles on electric calliope, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto, and Art Smith on recorder. Some of the best tracks have a groovy feel that really fits the date of the record, while others have a more traditional soundtrack approach – and tunes include "Theme From Z", "Airport Love Theme", "Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head", "A Man A Horse A Gun", "Patton Theme", and Jobim's "Love Theme From The Adventurers". RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1968/1972. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A pair of RCA Records gems from Hugo Montenegro – back to back on a single CD! First up is Theme From The Godfather – a sweet 70s update of the moogy groovy that Hugo Montenegro first started crafting in the 60s! The album's got both moog and Arp – the latter of which brings in more of a 70s electric vibe – and there's also some very cool sound effects on the record too, which really ups the ante for the sort of groove that Montenegro was creating! Tunes are all pretty well chosen – making for a super-dope batch of numbers that really gets past the usual – and the set includes an excellent reading of "Me & My Arrow", from Nilson's The Point; 2 versions of Nino Rota tracks from The Godfather; a nice version of Faure's "Pavane", with lots of spirally keyboards; a medley of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Moon River"; and even a few nice originals, like "Quadimodo" and "Stutterology". On 1968's Music From A Fistful Of Dollars, Hugh Montenegro makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! Titles include "The Vice Of Killing", "For A Few Dollars More", "Story Of A Soldier", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", "The Ecstasy Of Gold", "Sixty Seconds To What?", and "March With Hope". Excellent work by composer/leader Pete Rugolo – Stan Kenton's old partner in modernist jazz, and the force behind excellent work by June Christy, The Four Freshmen, and others. Weird and wonderful sounds from a very electric man – the mighty Piero Umiliani, an Italian composer who first rose to fame for a set of groundbreaking film scores in the 60s – then moved into even more experimental sound library work in the following decade! This set has Piero working in all sorts of cool electronic styles – never too outside or avant, but definitely in the darker side of his spectrum – although almost always with that playful sense of a tune that made his 60s music such a delight! The range of instruments varies – Umiliani clearly had a studio that was full of brand-new, top-shelf technologies – and titles are mostly from the mid 70s, with a few later cuts from 1983. Tunes include "Danza Magica", "Soundmaker Blues", "Fruitori", "Batticuore", "Sinistro Carillon", "Dolomiti", "Apocolaisse Atomica", "Description", "Lavorazione A Mare", and "Elettrone". Kamasi WashingtonBecoming – Music From The Netflix Documentary ... CD
Young Turks, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! As you can tell from the title, the work is music for a documentary soundtrack – and Washington really rises to the occasion with music of majesty – all jazz throughout, but mixed with some extra strings at times too – a bit like those fantastic instrumental moments that Bill Lee did for the early films of Spike – served up here with a similar sense of pride, power, and subtle righteousness! Other players include Rickey Washington on alto and flute, Ryan Porter on trombone, Dontae Winslow on trumpet, and Cameron Graves on piano and Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Take In The Story", "Shot Out Of A Cannon", "Song For Fraser", "Southside V1", "Detail", "Fashion Now & Then", "Connections", "Looking Forward", and "I Am Becoming". Schwiiiiiiing! Here's a great batch of tunes pulled from porno flicks of the 70s – schlocky then, but sounding pretty darn funky to our 21st century ears! The tunes on the set are mixed with dialogue – sliding back and forth from grooves to groans, in a way that makes the CD as entertaining as one of these old skin flicks – and slightly less embarrassing to enjoy, too. The CD's got 40 tracks in all – all from the catalog of Heavy Cream Productions – and although the production style is a bit film-slanted at times, you can't knock the enjoyability of the package. Titles include "Beards", "The Stripper", "Science Comes First", "Boob Tube", "Psychedelic Orgy", "What Sign Are You?", "Romantic Overture", "A Quickie", "I Think I'm In Love", and "Afternoon Delight". Four Flies (Italy), 1960s. New Copy ... $34.99
Modern jazz from the Italian scene of the 60s – all of it recorded for film and soundtrack use, and almost none of is released before! The music here shows not just the fantastic advances in film scoring in the 60s, but also the overlooked growth of jazz in Italy at the same time too – shifts in sounds and styles that continue to amaze us – even if most of the commercial recordings never got much global circulation at the time! And these sounds are even more unusual and special than those – recorded by names that you'd recognize as both musicians and composers – and mostly presented in small combo modes that resonate strongly with rare Italian jazz records of the period. Titles include "Tempo Di Charlston" by Enrico Simonetti, "I Nostri Mariti" by Armando Trovajoli, "Amarsi Male" by Silvano Spadaccino, "Un'Ora Per Vivere" by Nino Tassone, "Desideri D'Estate" by Gino Peguri, "La Curruzione" by Giovanni Fusco, "La Donna E Una Cosa Meravigliosa" by Perio Piccioni, "La Ragazzola" by Romano Mussolini, and "Una Jena In Cassaforte" by Gianfranco E Gian Piero Reverberi. Warner/Wounded Bird, 1971. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
One of the less-remembered records from the era of the giant rock festival – a set of tracks that were recorded during a wild cross-country hippie caravan! Although maybe not another Woodstock, the album does have some long live tracks that are really worth seeking out – in a relatively surprising blend of musicians that makes for a pretty interesting record overall! Highlights include a searing eight minute take on "Black Juju" by Alice Cooper, a ten minute medley of "How Blue Can You Get/Just A Little Love" by BB King, a twelve minute "Freakout/It Takes A Lot To Laugh" by Stoneground, a version of "Free The People" by Delaney & Bonnie, one of the rawest Doug Kershaw performances we've ever heard on "Louisiana Man/Battle Of New Orleans/Orange Blossom Special", Sal Valentino singing "Dreambo", and the Youngbloods tracks "Hippie From Olema" and "Act Naturally", both nicely tongue in cheek. Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $32.99 36.98
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso. A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Most of the music here is relatively gentle – seductive 70s themes played on piano, keyboards, guitar, and other light instrumentation – the kind of tunes that must have been beautiful slinking behind the products featured in the TV ads – which include Zenith TVs, Buick station wagons, Dannon yogurt, and Revlon perfumes! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". Ennio MorriconeCosa Avete Fatto A Solange? (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 31.99
A beautiful illustration of the balance of light and darkness in the best work of Ennio Morricone – and an obscure soundtrack that dances between both sides of the spectrum! The main theme is incredibly sweet – one of those lightly drifting Morricone numbers that features wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso – but other tunes then go much deeper into the depths – hitting odd tones, moody instrumental passages, and somber rhythms that are then surprisingly offset by lighter numbers that are peppered throughout the score. The instrumentation includes a number of unusual twists that are not typical of Morricone at the time – and titles include "Cadenze", "Aleatorio", "Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange", "Raccapriccio", "Una Tromba E La Sua Notte", "Fine Di Solange", and "Sottinitesi". The style of the music runs between the two poles of work from Morricone at the time – with some cuts that are spare, quiet, and very pretty, and others that are fuller, more turgid, and filled with the kind of jagged touches that can make his soundtracks incredibly dark. The main theme – "Il Serpente" – is offered in two great versions, one spare and pretty, the other a bit more driving, but still pretty darn groovy. Other tracks include "Canzone Lontana", "Nadine", "Orazione", "Tema Per Una Donna Sola", and "Parata Militare". This great CD edition features 13 more bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 72 minutes of music! CD

A wonderfully lush score from Ennio Morricone – done for this end-of-century film with Tim Roth in the lead – and which features the surprising appearance of Roger Waters and Eddie Van Halen on the track "Lost Boys Calling"! Don't worry, the rest of the album is prime Morricone material – of that more orchestral style he often did for larger budget Hollywood films, but which still had all of his best ideas intact. Titles include "Danny's Blues", "Second Crisis", "Ships & Snow", "Legend Of The Pianist", "The Crave", "Playing Love", "Mozart Reincarnated", and "1900s Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99
A stunning set that's packed with some of our favorite music from the soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone – that special style he created in the late 60s, as a way of blending together influences from jazz, bossa nova, and other instrumental styles – hardly the sleepy lounge music of the American scene – as the format here is always full of touches that are subtle yet complex! The music is wonderful – warm, but never too sentimental – groovy, but never in a cheap or cloying way – and always presented with a focus on unusual instrumentation, inventive arrangements, and production modes that make the the familiar seem strange – even while still coming across with a warm and appealing vibe. The 2LP set is a beautiful package – and includes tracks from Verushka, La Donna Invisible, Gli Intoccabili, D'Amore Si Muor, Scusi FAccio L'Amore, L'Ailibi, Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, Citta Violenta, and Come Impari Ad Amare Le Donne. Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
Dark genius from the legendary Ennio Morricone – one of the most important film composers of the 20th Century, and a master in just about any style! The work here represents a shift that Morricone made into darker modes as the 70s approached – sounds that stepped off from some of the moodier moments of his 60s western scores – especially those times when he might abstract the instrumentation, or use some elements borrowed from his experience in the Italian avant garde. These tracks are still tuneful, but also have a moody complexity that's breathtaking – and which would rewrite the rules for Hollywood soundtracks, as well as the Italian scene, for decades to come. The 2LP set features tracks from the films Il Segreto, Copkiller, Le Foto Proibite, Il Trio Infernale, I Sopravvissuti, La Corta Notte Delle Bambole, Citta Violent, Dimensioni Sonore, and Il Serpente – all wrapped up in a beautiful package! One of the greatest 70s moments from film composer John Addison – music scored for an all-star movie that was maybe a bit too all-star in the long run – but which features Addison really knocking it out of the park with the music! The vibe is more like the best 60s war dramas than you'd guess from the date – orchestrations that mix together bold passages of action with some more subtle dramatic moments – woodwinds and strings used by Addison with effortless ease, and often some nicely dark touches lurking in the deep backgrounds! Titles include "Human Roadblock", "Nijmegen Bridge", "Underground Resistance", "Before The Holocaust", "A Dutch Rhapsody", and "March Of The Paratroopers". 2CD edition – the original soundtrack album, plus a huge amount of bonus tracks – 35 more numbers from the original film recordings, wrapped up with very detailed notes as well! Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

This soundtrack features half of Baldamenti's eerie, airy sounds – and half of the kind of old school numbers that gave the narrative such an out of time sort of vibe – and which we're happy they were able to include. Baldamenti titles include "Night Streets/Sandy & Jeffrey", "Frank", "Jeffrey's Dark Sid", "Mysteries Of Love", "Going Down To Lincoln/Sound Effects Suite", and "Frank Returns". The first-ever full presentation of the music for Ghoulies – the creepy 80s horror film about monsters that would come up from the toilet! Richard Band's music is surprisingly rich and full for the film – done with light orchestrations that evoke a nice sense of fantasy – floating strings and woodwinds at some points, darker and more moody elements at others – but all acting together as this very evocative sonic landscape – rescued by Band from the original musical elements, and sequenced here to finally fit the order of the film. Titles include "Jonathan Prepares", "Basement Discovery", "First Incantation", "Becky Is Leaving", "Organ Track", "The Ghoulie Attacks", and "Mr Dick's Tongue Lashing" – plus "Surrender" and "Dancing With A Monster" by Fela Johnson – both of which are more electronic and keyboard-heavy. BBE (UK), 2021. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $52.99 54.99
One of the most compelling albums in years from Billy Bang – and that's really saying a lot, given how much compelling music he's recorded! The set is put together in conjunction with a fascinating documentary on Bang's life, music, and time spent fighting in Vietnam – an experience that stayed with him for decades, scarred him, and which here has become a way of reaching back into the past, into the culture, as a way to find some sort of personal healing! The result is fantastic – as Bang's amazing work on violin comes in contact with a variety of Vietnamese artists – including Tran Manh Tuan on tenor, Duc Dau of the Phu Dong Family Band, and even the larger Hanoi Symphony Orchestra – all different musical partners who really help Billy expand his sound and resolve some of his decades-old conflicts – presented alongside some spoken passages from the film that are very striking, and a few solo numbers too. Titles include "Mystery Of The Mekong", "Song For Don Cherry", "New Saigon Phunk", "Jungle Lullaby", "Dan Da Traditional Lithophone", and "Moments For The Kiamia". Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

A very groovy musical – one done quite far from the bright lights of Broadway, in early 60s LA – with lyrics and presentation that offer up a wry postwar commentary on the city! The whole thing has the feel of some of the hipper off-Broadway material of the time – very witty little tunes, penned by Billy Barnes in a Tommy Wolf/Fran Landesman mode – handled by the cast with a nicely intimate feel that really makes the lyrical subtleties come through nicely. Instrumentation is relatively spare, and cast members include Ken Berry, Joyce Jameson, Tom Hatten, Sylvia Lewis, and Steve Franken – singing songs that include "The Pink Pussycat School", "Covina", "Keep Away", "LA Is", "Weather Report", "Does Anybody Here Love Me", and "I'm Glad I Call It Home". John BarryWalkabout (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Other titles include "The Three Of Us", "Walkabout", "The Children", "The Journey", "Stranded", and "Night In The Outback". LP, Vinyl record album

Really early sounds from the great John Barry – a huge amount of tracks recorded with his combo for the Drumbeat TV show in the UK! The program had a strong focus on the emerging rock and roll sounds of the late 50s – and the John Barry Seven were a perfect group to provide musical accompaniment – professional enough to handle the gig in just the right way, but youthful enough to come up with plenty of sharp-edged sounds! The instrumentation's often heavy on guitar, but features some trumpet lines from Barry too – and although the set features some instrumentals by the group, there's also a lot of vocal numbers – with singers who include Derry Hart, Adam Faith, Bob Miller, Sylvia Sands, Roy Young, Vince Eager, and others. 40 tracks in all – including "Mad Mab", "Bees Knees", "Don't Leave Me", "Slippin & Slidin", "Rockin Sandy", "Get Happy", "Italian Style", "Beatnik", "Catwalk", "I Go Ape", "Shame On You Miss Johnson", and "Buzzin". John Barry/Elizabeth TaylorElizabeth Taylor In London ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A weird little record from John Barry – the soundtrack to a 1963 television special recorded by Elizabeth Taylor at the height of her early popularity, and featuring Taylor reciting a variety of poems and speeches over music by Barry! There's a relatively high concept feel to the album – as Barry's backings are fairly string-laden and serious, penned to match the mood of Taylor's presentation of material written by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Pitt, Winston Churchill, and Queen Victoria. And although Taylor speaks on about half the record, the best tracks here are actually the instrumental ones – which have more of the depth of Barry's serious soundtrack work from the time, and manage to have their own sense of presence apart from the star quality of Liz on the set. Arrangements are by Johnnie Spence, and titles include "Elizabeth", "London Theme Jazz Waltz", "Queen Elizabeth At Tilbury", "Queen Victoria", "English Garden", "The Fire Of London", "Lovers & Browning", and "London At Dawn". A rare later soundtrack from Dutch composer Ruud Bos – best known for some very funky work at the start of the 70s, and still going strong here a decade later! The score's got a much more mid 70s vibe than you'd expect – like some of the best American cop show work of the early 70s, with jazzy instrumentation intertwined with larger orchestrations – handled by Nat Peck, who had a fair bit of jazz experience himself – which means that he really lets the best elements of the music come forth and blossom! A number of tracks are upbeat and quickly-grooving – and those are mixed with some shorter scene-setting moments that balance the whole thing out strongly – and make the whole package feel like a long suite of sounds, dedicated to this lost film. Dracula never sounded so funky – thanks to the mighty sounds of the Whit Boyd Combo! Boyd was a porn peddler in 60s Texas, but also cut a few great soundtracks for his smutty films – including this wonderful romp that's full of funky drums, heavy organ, off-tuned guitar, and even a bit of tenor from time to time – all with a vibe that's a bit like a Prestige Records combo being let loose to score some b-grade film for the grindhouse scene! Some tracks are short, others are nice and long – and the music is nicely rough around the edges, with occasional production touches to make things sound spooky – but a nicely strong soul jazz vibe at the core. Titles include "Chase Music For Girl In A Cave", "Music Number Five", "Dracula The Dirty Old Man Theme", "Fast Music Trailer", and "Peppy Music For A Dating Scene". Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
Funky organ jazz from a very unlikely source – a Texas-made porno from 1969, and a movie that dared ask the question "Do prostitutes make good wives?" The music is unusual in that it's actually pretty darn good – nice small combo jazz, often with a good current of funk in the mix – surprisingly still around after all these years, on audio tapes that stand where no extant copy of the film remains! The sound is nice and raw – heavy drums, plenty of Hammond, and some trumpet solos too – all with a feel that's maybe more like a gem from the contemporary funk underground, although a lot grittier overall! Plus, most tracks are nice and long – clearly scored for extended sex scenes – which is a real rarity for music like this of the time, usually served up on the short side of a funky 45. The set begins with the trailer-like "Don't Miss The Party Girls" – then soars into the 15 minute "Nikki & The College Boys", and the 23 minute "Party Scene/Strip Poker" – plus a version of the James Brown tune "I Got The Feelin". Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
The film soundtrack version of this famous 60s musical, which was based around the sounds of Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The film version shares many similarities to the broadway one – translations by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, vocals by Shuman and Elly Stone – but the overall sound is quite different, as the versions presented here are more subtle, less campy, possibly due to the freer range of expression allowed to the actors on a film soundstage. Plus, this version also includes a few of Brel's best songs that were left out of the original show – making for a total of 26 titles that include "The Bulls", "Sons Of", "The Desperate Ones", "Amsterdam", "The Statue", "Brussels", "Funeral Tango", "Bachelors Dance", "Carousel", and "Next". If you want Brel in English, this may well be the best way to get it – as nearly all other English language versions of his work (by Scott Walker, Marc Almond, and others) came from these translations. Yet as with most of the great sound library albums of the time, the music is way more than conventional – as guitar, organ, bass, and drums are arranged, recorded, and produced in very unusual ways – with a really open ear towards the fuller, larger sound – which includes great effects and other elements along the way! The whole thing's very groovy – kind of mid 60s Italian mod soundtrack styles meeting the psychedelic generation – and titles include "Kissing", "Villa Polanski", "Sharon Tate", "Hip Now", "Lovable", "Petting", "Under Funeral", and "Malattia". There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! An overlooked score from the great Roy Budd – one that we're not sure ever made it to vinyl back in the day – and which is presented here in a nicely expanded version! The music has that tense quality that made the non-groovy cuts from Budd's Get Carter score so great – and which was followed in some of his other early 70s soundtracks – which, like the music here, really shows a maturation away from the straighter jazz of Roy's roots – but still features the occasional piano solo (including electric) to remind us that he's a performer as much as a composer. There's a darkly moody vibe to many numbers – this current of sadness that's really beautiful, and which flowers often in a subtle way – on titles that include "Change Of Plan", "The Journey Continues", "Opening", "In The Woods", "Peeping Robin", "Mingle With Me", "Swept Up In Memories", "In The Office", and "Bossa Nova". John ColtraneBlue World (Le Chat Dans Le Sac) ... CD
Impulse, 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A lost treasure from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – material recorded as the soundtrack for the Canadian film Le Chat Danse Le Sac – which features new recordings of material that Coltrane had done in previous years, but really updated by the fresh version of this group! Although the music was used in the film, which was an art house hit at best, it's never been issued on record before – and in fact, its existence was something of a mystery until not that long ago – quite a surprise, given that the sessions were done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and have a quality level that really matches the Impulse Records best by these musicians! The tunes are almost like this amazing bridge between the mid 60s Impulse years and the Coltrane sound at the start of the decade on Atlantic – as the grooves are modal, and most music is more inside than the group was hitting by 1965 – yet still burning with that searching spirit that made them so great. The lineup, of course, features John Coltrane on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the whole thing is an instant key addition to the catalog of this tremendous quartet. Titles include two takes on "Naima", three takes on "Village Blues", and the tracks "Like Sonny", "Traneing In", and "Blue World". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD

Al CaiolaSounds For Spies & Private Eyes ... LP
United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Groovy guitarist Al lays down a tasty set of 60s spy and cop themes – all with a Leroy Holmes production style that's similar to other pop soundtrack work on United Artists. The album features the original cut "The Bronze Doll", plus groovy theme music like "The Eye In Flat Five", "Theme From the Fugitive", "Man From Uncle", and "Man of Mystery". Nice cover, too! John CarpenterFog (2LP 180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Death Waltz, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film! The soundtrack kicks off with the indispensable prologue from the movie – with the old man telling the ghost story with just the sparest of background keyboards – and other titles include "Theme From The Fog", "Rocks At Drakes' Bay", "Tommy Tells Of Ghost Ships", "Flack In The Sanctuary", "Dane", "An Evil Plan", "Morgue", "The Fog Approaches", "Revenge", "The Fog Enters Town" and more. This killer Death Waltz double vinyl version has a full bonus LP of previous unreleased cues! LP, Vinyl record album

Daniela CasaSovrapposizione Di Immagini ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
Hypnotic sound library material from Italian composer Daniela Casa – some of her rarest work from the mid 70s – recorded in her home studio and never before released commercially! It's very compelling work, with a range of styles from minimalist soundtrack music, to fairly heavy psych, to sitar-driven strings, to airy flute pieces and beyond. It was recorded for use in radio, television and film, but it honestly works just as well as melodic, if experimental instrumentals that masterfully blends and straddles genres. Titles include "Ricerca Dela Materia", "Pericolo", "Dimensione Concreta", "Grosse Cilindrate", "Avventura", "Visione Surreale", Occultismo", "Fantasia", "Motocross", "Dimensione Astrata", Ugnoto", "Circo Del Bimbi", "Sovrapposizione Di Immagini" and more. Erlon ChavesProcura-Se Uma Virgem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CID/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 36.99
One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from Erlon Chaves – a Brazilian arranger who got his start in the bossa generation, later did some more traditional music – but here explodes with this great fusion of European and Brazilian soundtrack styles! The record's credited to the Orquesta St Moritz – most likely a studio group with a European name, for good pedigree – but there's a huge amount of sounds here that rival some of the best modes coming from the EMI/Odeon label at the start of the 70s – particularly the mix of samba and bossa elements with larger funky arrangements, then given a more sophisticated twist – as you'd find in the music of Marcos Valle! Most of these tunes are instrumental, and there's some really wonderful organ work on a number of the titles – on tracks that include "Procura Se Uma Virgem", "Grilo", "Uma Velha Bossa", "Ba Oba Oba", "Vamos Nos", "O Anjo E O Diabo", and "Tema De Amor". Alec CheerNight Kaleidoscope ... LP
Trunk (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $25.99
A really great electronic soundtrack – contemporary, but served up with a very spare, electronic feel that takes us back to some of the best horror gems of the 80s! If you're a fan of the music for Stranger Things or Good Time, you'll find plenty to love here – as Alec Cheer works in a keyboard-heavy style that's awash with waves of synth and spare layers of sound – maybe sometimes slightly warmer than the music of either of those references, but with an equally compelling sound! Titles include "Evil Ways", "The Night Belongs To Us", "Protective Spell", "Morning", "Hunters", "Kickstart", and "Confusion". LP, Vinyl record album

Giancarlo ChiaramelloQuando Gli Uomini Armarono La Clave E – Con Le Donne Fecero Din-Don ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the more obscure entries in the caveman comedy genre that cropped up briefly at the end of the 60s – a set of very groovy tunes for a movie that has the females going on a sex strike to keep the men from fighting! There's very little in the music to tie the film to Lysistrata – as the tunes are delightfully whimsical, and move through a mix of bossa-styled jazz, mod rock moments, and a few funky touches – all in that best style put forth by the Italian scene in the 60s! The score has a few standout fuzzy/funky guitar bits, and maybe best of all are the vocal numbers – sung by Gli Alluminogeni, and based around this "Troglomen" theme – which has cool chanting in a very rhythmic way. 32 tracks in all – and a number of bonus tracks too! Stelvio CiprianiPoliziotto Senza Paura ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. New Copy ... $19.99 28.98
Cool Italian cop soundtrack work from Stelvio Cipriani – easily one of the true masters of the genre! The music is a great mix of mellow moods and funkier moments – spare, piano or keyboard-tinged tunes, which are then offset by more driving numbers that push along with fast guitar, heavy drums, and the general sort of groove you might expect in cop show work of the 70s! Cipriani always does a good job of bringing in some lyrical, more sensitive elements to his music – things that really keep things light, while also creating a rich sense of feeling – quite a bit different than slicker US police work of the period. CD features 22 tracks in all – a nicely groovy mix of styles! CD
