Don EllisMusic From Other Galaxies & Planets – Featuring The Main Title Theme From Star Wars ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... $14.99
A great little set – way more than you might think from the cover! Ostensibly, this one's a cash-in album for the mid 70s Star Wars soundtrack craze – but since it's handled by Ellis, it's got a surprisingly funky feel, with many tracks that recall his own great soundtrack work of the time. In fact, the album only has 2 tracks from the Star Wars soundtrack – despite the fact that the logo for the movie is displayed largely on the cover – and all other tracks are originals by Ellis, handled with a sweet mix of electric funk and funky jazz soloing! Lots of nice keyboards, and titles include "Star Wars", "Orion's Sword", "Eros", "Lyra", "Ursa", "Vulcan", "Crypton" and "Arcturas". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD

Lin Manuel MirandaHamilton ... CD
Atlantic, 2016. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
An amazing moment – both in American theater and music – the groundbreaking original production of Hamilton – written by and starring the wonderful Lin-Manuel Miranda, a man who's intent on completely transforming the American cultural landscape! The soundtrack is very fittingly issued by Atlantic Records – given the strong undercurrent of soul and hip hop in the music – as Miranda opens up the true story of Alexander Hamilton in a surprisingly effective blend of beats, rhymes, and larger orchestrations! Miranda himself plays the lead character, in a setting that also features great vocal performances by Leslie Odom Jr, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, and others – all served up in this lavish package that contains all the musical performances from the original production. ✨✧ Modern Jazz QuartetOne Never Knows – Original Film Score For No Sun In Venice By John Lewis ... CD
Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $7.99
The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! The work here is written by John Lewis, for a movie that never lasted the test of time as much as the record – and it's some of John's most evocative writing of the time – almost imagistic enough without the film – filled with tones and colors that are quite visual, especially in the hands of this great group! Selections are played by the core quartet of Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and titles include "The Golden Striker", "One Never Knows", "The Rose Truc", "Venice", "Cortege", and "Three Windows".
