✨✧ Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD

Modern Jazz QuartetOne Never Knows – Original Film Score For No Sun In Venice By John Lewis ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+ ... $7.99
The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! The work here is written by John Lewis, for a movie that never lasted the test of time as much as the record – and it's some of John's most evocative writing of the time – almost imagistic enough without the film – filled with tones and colors that are quite visual, especially in the hands of this great group! Selections are played by the core quartet of Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and titles include "The Golden Striker", "One Never Knows", "The Rose Truc", "Venice", "Cortege", and "Three Windows". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Long Playing Unbreakable pressing with deep groove. Cover has light aging.)

John ColtraneBlue World (Le Chat Dans Le Sac) ... CD
Impulse, 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A lost treasure from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – material recorded as the soundtrack for the Canadian film Le Chat Danse Le Sac – which features new recordings of material that Coltrane had done in previous years, but really updated by the fresh version of this group! Although the music was used in the film, which was an art house hit at best, it's never been issued on record before – and in fact, its existence was something of a mystery until not that long ago – quite a surprise, given that the sessions were done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and have a quality level that really matches the Impulse Records best by these musicians! The tunes are almost like this amazing bridge between the mid 60s Impulse years and the Coltrane sound at the start of the decade on Atlantic – as the grooves are modal, and most music is more inside than the group was hitting by 1965 – yet still burning with that searching spirit that made them so great. The lineup, of course, features John Coltrane on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the whole thing is an instant key addition to the catalog of this tremendous quartet. Titles include two takes on "Naima", three takes on "Village Blues", and the tracks "Like Sonny", "Traneing In", and "Blue World". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD
Also available Blue World (Le Chat Dans Le Sac) ... LP 22.99

✨✧ Donny Hathaway/Quincy JonesCome Back Charleston Blue ... LP
Atco, 1972. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An unusual album in the Atlantic career of Donny Hathaway – and a unique collaboration with the legendary Quincy Jones! The music here is Hathaway's sole entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack genre of the 70s – penned for film version of a Chester Himes novel, and scored in a mix of funky 70s modes and other more standard jazz styles. Quincy's on board as the "musical supervisor" – and clearly helps Donny focus his energies towards the hipper side of the soundtrack spectrum, especially on the more contemporary styled tracks. And although most of the work here is instrumental, Hathaway also sings a bit too – most famously on the classic "Little Ghetto Boy" – which is easily one of Donny's greatest tracks ever! Other titles include "Come Back Charleston Blue", with vocals by Margie Joseph, plus "Bossa Nova", "Tim's High", "Hearse To Graveyard", "Harlem Dawn", "String Segue", "Furniture Truck", and "Liberation". (Soul, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has split seams, a promo stamp, and a large amount of staining and peeling on the left side.)

Bill LooseVixen (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beverly Hills/Real Gone, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
A tremendous soundtrack – nearly perfect in every way, and put together with a heck of a lot more care than the Russ Meyer film it was recorded to accompany! We honestly have never heard another Bill Loose score before, but with this one we'd rank him right up there with our favorites of the time – on both sides of the Atlantic! The main theme has some great electric harpsichord over sweeping strings and a brooding rhythm – and the harpsichord comes back on other tracks of the album – joining some really skittish drums, oddly-tuned guitar, and rolling basslines that give some of the best tracks an almost funky sort of feel. There's also a great sax player who brings in some wonderfully soulful undercurrents on some tracks – making for a really odd mix of modes, but which really sounds great. Titles include "Vixen Gets Excited", "Niles Threatens Vixen", "Janet's Theme", "Obanion's Theme", "Conversation Piece", and "Canadian Romp". LP, Vinyl record album
(45 rpm neon green vinyl pressing – limited to 750 copies!)
