✨✧ John Carpenter & Alan HowarthThey Live ... CD
Enigma, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing work from John Carpenter – still a dedicated soundtrack composer long into his film career – and always a master of spare, spooky electronics! The instrumentation here is a bit evolved from some of his earliest classics – different keyboards and electronics developed during the 80s – but the overall approach is still very similar, and co-performed with Allan Howarth, who always gives Carpenter's music the right sort of careful balance! Carpenter does a lot with just a little – never making things overblown, especially in the way that some of his contemporaries might do – and titles include "Transient Hotel", "Wake Up", "Underground", "A Message", "Return To Church", and "The Siege Of Justiceville". ✨✧ VariousDead Presidents Vol 2– Soul Classics ... CD
Capitol, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second volume of the soundtrack to the film Dead Presidents. Like the first volume, this is a whopping batch of classic 70s soul tracks – including "Right On For The Darkness" and "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue (Live)" by Curtis Mayfield, "I Got The Feelin" and "Ain't That A Groove" by James Brown, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by The Undisputed Truth, "Cowboys To Girls" by The Intruders, "Keep On Pushing" and "(Man Oh Man) I Want To Go Back" by The Impressions, "I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie Wonder, "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" by Sam & Dave, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Jerry Butler and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" by The Temptations. Francis LaiEmmanuelle 2 – L'Anti Verge (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Seven Seas/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... On April 20, 2024
A sleazy film, but one with some really great music from Francis Lai – the composer better known for his mainstream contributions to classics like A Man & A Woman and Live For Life! In any setting, Lai displays an amazing genius for spare tunes that hit a lyrical chord and a warmly sentimental mode – never one that's sleepy or drippy, but just the right balance of sounds and rhythms to convey a tremendous amount with very little. Lai plays a fair bit of keyboards here, lightly electric, and relatively spare – but not as much so as on some of his other 70s soundtracks. (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 21. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, April 20. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on April 21 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) LP, Vinyl record album

Piero UmilianiL'Arcangelo (yellow vinyl pressing) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Vinyl Magic (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... On April 20, 2024
One of the grooviest soundtracks we've ever heard from the mighty Piero Umiliani – a sparkling set that's filled with jazzy scatting, mod instrumentation, and loads of other wonderful 60s touches throughout! The music has that special Italian sound that's built on bossa that you'll find in some of the coolest soundtracks from Umiliani's generation – and like the rest, it really takes off in its own unique direction – with soaring, seductive sounds that live quite vibrantly away from the screen! The whole thing's right up there with bossa jazzy classics like Sweden Heaven & Hell or La Matriarca. (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 21. ✨✧ SeedsPushin Too Hard ... CD
GNP/Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great "new" album from the legendary Seeds – not new recordings, but a fresh collection that brings together a fair bit of rare and unissued tracks – along with some of their classics, and some rare pre-seeds material too! The collection is pulled from a soundtrack for the film – the documentary titled The Seeds Pushin Too Hard – but the whole thing works perfectly as a double-length Seeds album on its own – especially as it features a few tracks by other artists that also offer a great bookend to their short but fantastic musical legacy! If you know know The Seeds, you'll recognize their sound instantly – as it was a crucial west coast blast of psych garage that influenced many other groups for years to come – but which is still best heard from the group themselves. Titles include the 14 minute full length version of "Evil Hoodoo" – plus "Pushin Too Hard, "No Escape (take 3)", "Mr Farmer", "Tripmaker (live)", "Out Of The Question (alt mix)", "Can't Seem To Make You Mine", "Try To Understand (take 3)", "Thousand Shadows (1993 mix)", "Up In Her Dream", "Satisfy You (take 3)", "The Gardener (take 1)", "Night Time Girl (take 8)", "Fallin Off The Edge Of My Mind (take 12)", "A Faded Picture", and the very cool "YMCA Spot/Sky Speaks". Also includes "They Say" by Ritchie Marsh, "The Perfect Wave" by Neil Norman, "Baby Please Don't Go (live)" by Muddy Waters, and "The Ballad Of Sky Saxon" by Kim Fowley. (Rock, Soundtracks) CD

✨✧ Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever – The Original Movie Soundtrack ... CD
Polydor, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD
