✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiLa Moglie Giovane ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A warm and sexy score from Stelvio Cipriani – penned with a beautiful blend of woodwinds, keyboards, and sweet bossa-styled grooves! There's a bit more fullness here than in some of Cipriani's more erotic work, and a bit more groove too – although most of the music moves at a wonderfully mellow pace, and just steps around with lots of great jazzy inflections – even though the music itself isn't really jazz! The blend of softness and fullness is wonderful – and the whole thing's easily one of the more captivating scores from Cipriani during these very vital years. CD features 23 tracks from the film – plus notes in English and Italian too! CD

Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLa Polizia Incrimina La Legge Assolve (aka High Crime) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido. CD features notes in both English and Italian, great images from the film, and even a number of previously unreleased tunes! 20 tracks in all – with titles that include "Festa A Genova", "Gangster Story", "Chicca", "The Life Of A Policeman", "Il Libanese", "Casa Di Moda", "Rock Al Porto", and "La Storia Comincia". Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis2019 Dopo La Caduta Di New York ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1983. Sealed ... $29.99
There's a real Escape From New York look to the cover here – and the music by Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis has a very strong John Carpenter vibe – lots of spare, stark numbers that shift between electro funk and moodier numbers – really setting up the action with a dose of horror, and maybe having a depth that can last longer than the film itself! Instrumentation is very 80s, in the best way possible – lots of keyboards and electro drum patterns – at a level that certainly make the DeAngelis brothers a key precursor to the sort of sounds that are very much favored by the Stranger Things generation. 17 tracks in all – and very strong all the way through. ✨✧ Nico FidencoLa Ragazzina (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1974. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
A sweet little score from Italian composer Nico Fidenco – best known round these parts for his sultry work for some of the 70s Emmanuelle films, sounding equally groovy on this more obscure album from the time! There's a light groove throughout the album – sometimes a slinky Euro sex sort of vibe, other times a much more pronounced approach to funk – with a mix of electric and acoustic elements that includes vibes, keyboards, flute, piano, and other great touches – all recorded with the spaciousness and care you'd expect from the generation. Titles include "La Ragazzina", "Speed", "Monica's Love", "Sandra's Dream", "Monica's Mirror", "Sandra", "Motor Ship", "Duello In 3/4", "Sandra In Love", and "Monica's Flight". CD features 15 tracks from the original promo-only album – plus 12 more previously-unissued numbers! CD

Beat (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A late entry in the Black Emanuelle series starring Laura Gemser and featuring music by Nico Fidenco – La Via Della Prostituzione – featuring a mix of sulty Fidenco sounds and more funky and disco oriented grooves! Much of the material here has never been released before this great CD from Beat Records – and it's full of funky 70s dancefloor styled sounds with spacier touches, clapping rhythms and evocative wordless vocals. Great stuff – benchmark late 70s erotic soundtrack grooves after the international dancefloor sounds seeped into the style! Titles include "Run Cheetah Run", "A Modern Reportage", "Performing Joy", "Red Room", "Lady Surprise", "Reporter In Action", "Strange Hospital", "Lady Fighting", "Too Much AgaiN" and more. CD

Sugar/Universal (France), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99 23.99
A fantastic soundtrack that's maybe even more legendary than the unusual animated film for which it was created – a funky French classic that stands strong in the best tradition of work by Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Claude Vannier, and Michel Colombier! No surprise, Alain Goraguer is part of the same generation, and did some great early jazzy backings for Serge – but here, his style is much funkier, with lots of sweet keyboard lines, wah wah guitar, and soaring larger orchestrations that really put the whole thing together – clearly one of Alain's best musical moments – and filled with great tunes that include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". Plus, this great reissue is mixed from the original tapes – and features 10 more bonus tracks – all appearing here for the first time ever! CD

✨✧ Lallo GoriScusi Ma Le Paga Le Tasse/Come Rubammo La Bomba Atomica ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1967/1971. New Copy ... $17.99 22.99
Two very playful soundtracks – both composed by Lallo Gori, who we mostly know for more serious action work! Scusi Ma Le Paga Le Tasse is from the start of the 70s, and begins with a vocal number from Franco Fanchi, but soon moves into much groovier territory with a blend of funky jazz and dreamier moments of the sort that you might be likely to hear from some of the bigger Italian composers of the period. There's occasional light piano, ala Stelvio Cipriani – and even an appearance from the Nora Orlandi singers over the course of the 17 tracks from the film. Come Rubammo La Bomba Atomica is from 1967, and the music has some slight currents of spy spoof scores of the period – that nice comedic/dramatic mix of jazz and dynamic pacing, blended with a few exotic elements too. The set features two vocal numbers sung by Elsa, and the rest of the 12 tracks from the film are instrumental. CD

✨✧ Detto MarianoW La Foca/Cornetti Alla Crema/La Moglie In Vacanza L'Amante In Citta ... CD
Beat (Italy), Early 1980s. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
A trio of later comedy soundtracks – all served up by Italian maestro Detto Mariano! W La Foca has a really playful main theme – one that romps around in a very catchy theme, nicely lilting and served up here in ten different variations – including a very cool moog reading at the end! Cornetti Alla Crema has a wider variety of modes – including some more moogy keyboards, and a few clubbier moments as well – plus occasional sing-song female vocals that have a groovy wordless approach. Last up is the longest soundtrack in the set – La Moglie In Vacanza L'Amante In Citta – music that still has some of the keyboards and the theme-cycles of the other two, but which fleshes things out a bit more, shifting through different instruments that make the whole thing almost feel like a longer suite, based on the same melody. CD features 32 tracks in all! CD

Ennio MorriconeChe C'Entriamo Noi Con La Rivoluzione ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
A wonderful and overlooked soundtrack by Morricone – done for a western, but with a tone that's very different than most of his other spaghetti work! The main theme to the film has a very cool and groovy approach – almost in the gentle bossa mode at times, with a slightly jangly theme that reminds us a bit of moments from La Donna Invisible, juxtaposed with some other starker tunes that use mouth-organ, piano, or banjo to create some slight whimsicality. The whole thing's great – with some really cool lost mellow tunes that rank with some of our favorite in this mode by him! There's a total of 18 tracks in all on this version, including a stereo mix of "Rivoluzione??", plus "Chje C'Entriamo Noi?", "Rivoluzione??" and evolving varitions of the title theme. CD

Ennio MorriconeLa Califfa (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
EMI/BTF (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... About September 18, 2023 (delayed)
A really moody little record from Ennio Morricone – spare, subtle, and extremely beautiful – touched with notes of sadness and remorse, but also handled with a strong spirit of redemption! The sound here isn't as cold or atonal as that on some of Morricone's horror work – but it's also not sweet and dreamy either. Instead, there's kind of an economic use of piano, light strings, and odd sonic textures – woven into a tapestry of shorter tunes that convey a real sense of loss, but also a quietly growing beauty. There's a few wordless vocals on the set, but things are mostly instrumental overall – and titles include "La Califfa", "La Pace Interiore", "Fari Nella Notte", "La Cena", "Notturno", "Sotto La Pioggia", and "Sangue Sull'Asfalto". Ennio MorriconeLa Donna Invisibile ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
One of our favorite all-time soundtracks from the legendary Ennio Morricone – and a record that really clued us in to that subtle sort of genius that sets him apart from the rest! Maestro Morricone is working in a number of different modes here – really making this one of the more richly textured soundtracks. His notes just inch by, one after one, in short, spare passages – and they build up into a tapestry of sweet, yet off-kilter sounds – which are then balanced with some warmer moments too – with occasional bossa moments to relieve the tension, and a few groovy cuts too! The whole thing is incredible – a masterpiece of sound and subtle instrumentation – on titles that include "In Un Sogno Il Sogno", which features a stunning solo vocal performance by the great Edda Dell'Orso – plus "La Donna Invisible", "Un Bacio", "Alla Serenita", "Silenziosamente", "Incontro Travsversale", and "La Moda". Ennio MorriconeLa Stagione Dei Sensi ... LP
Ariete (Italy), 1969. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A lesser-known soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – but one of his grooviest moments of the late 60s! The score is a great blend of heavy and light – and blends together that wonderful floating Morricone style with some heavier, fuzzier tunes that show the late 60s period of the film – all making for a really fleshed-out sound, of the sort that you're usually likely to hear in some of Morricone's classics! The album includes one great number that's got an extended sitar solo, and a few more with hard-edged male vocals by Patrick Samson that almost feel like late 60s French pop! Titles include "Gloria", "Sytar", "Una Voce Allo Specchio", "Tell Me Tell Me", "Sospendi Il Tempo", "In Tre Quarti", "Laila Laila", and "Dinamica Per 5 + 1". LP, Vinyl record album

Beat (Italy), 1971. New Copy 2 CDs ... $20.99 26.99
Morricone fans – this one's got it all! The music is completely wonderful throughout, and a great mix of everything that makes Ennio Morricone so tremendous – a bit of bossa here, some funky bits there, and even some spookier slow passages with a nice atonal feel! The main theme of the record is more than enough to get us going – a wonderful tune with wordless female vocals in the best Mondo Morricone mode – but other instrumental tracks follow with some very cool, slow moments – including some great love themes which then lead to some beefier, bouncier numbers that are really great too. This limited 2CD version is great – with a total of 24 tracks that include "La Lucertola", "Magia Nera", "Giorno Di Notte", "Spiriti", "Ancora Ad Est", "Sfinge", "Spostato Ad Est", and "A Lucio Fulci". Gerry MulliganLa Menace (80s pressing) ... LP
DRG, 1977. Sealed ... $5.99
Obscure work from Gerry Mulligan – and some of his best of the 70s! The record is a soundtrack for a French film starring Yves Montand, and the soundtrack was handled by Mulligan with assistance from Don Elliott – who brings in a funky style that's quite different than you'd expect from most of Gerry's work. Mulligan's horn sounds really great in these arrangements – strutting out nicely on the funky tracks, and kicking back with a cool sound on the mellower ones. Titles include "Trucking Again", "The Trap", "Dance Of The Truck", "Watching & Waiting", and "Theme From La Menace". (Jazz, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

Riz OrtolaniIl Sole Buio/L'Angelo Con La Pistola ... CD
Beat (Italy), Early 90s. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
Two later soundtracks from Riz Ortolani – both showing the maestro at the top of his game! Il Sole Buio has this wonderful way of gently unfolding the melody – almost Morricone-like, but with warmer tones at times – and mixed with a few electric jazz moments to offset the larger orchestrations – although the latter dominate, and really have this wonderfully rich vibe – almost a slight touch of the sort of sentiment you'd get in a French film score too! L'Angelo Con La Pistola is from the same director, Damiano Damiani, two years later – and again has some great orchestral numbers that billow and glisten with a gentle charm, mixed with a few more electric, keyboard-heavy tracks to showcase the action in the story! 21 tracks in all – and first time on CD for both titles. Piero PiccioniTemptation/La Figlia Del Capitano ... CD
Kronos (Germany), 1965/1968. Used ... $11.99
Tempting sounds from the great Piero Piccioni – two late 60s horror scores on a single CD! First up is Temptation – a soundtrack that's got some wonderful organ lines and slow-moving grooves – of the sort that were covered by the Easy Tempo series years back, when we first fell in love with Piccioni's music! There's a slow swell and soft step to the music that's mighty nice – almost a perfect distillation of the Italian bossa influences that made for some of the best film scores of the time! The CD features 13 numbers from the film – all of them great, and the kind of variations on a single groovy theme you might find in Armando Trovajoli's La Matriarca. La Figlia Del Capitano is a bit richer, with more strings in the music, and a few more dramatic spots too – yet overall, the mood nicely fits that of Temptation – with a sense of holding back, then running forward – which suits the music very well. CD features 10 tracks from La Figlia – for a total of 23 in all. CD

Berto Pisano/Carlo SavinaLa Svergognata/Suggestionata ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1974. Used ... $11.99 29.99
A sweetly sexy soundtrack from the great Berto Pisano – one that really lives up to its image on the cover! There's a gently grooving feel to the music that's right up there with the best erotica work from Morricone – handled by Pisano with light strings, keyboards, bits of flute, and some especially nice vocals from Edda Dell'Orso, who's definitely on the warmer side of her talents with a record like this! The tunes glide along nicely, and are supported with some great artwork from the film – and titles include "Orchestra For Edda", "Piano Dreams", "Free Hammond", "Sound For A Child", and "Voice In The Night". CD also features 11 more tracks from Carlo Savina's score to Suggestionata – an equally great 70s erotic film with a really slinky feel! Savina's music borrows a bit from older bossa modes, but also rolls in some more adult 70s styles too – the kind of sexy Sunday morning themes that always make Euro soundtracks of the time worth seeking out, even if the film itself isn't that great! A groovy little soundtrack – one scored for a 70s film known as The Doctor & His Sexy Student! The music's got a light and playful kind of feel – partly 70s Euro erotica, but also with some slinkier touches that have a really nice 60s approach at times, and which feature nice little keyboard lines that dance around nicely! The main theme of the film is a bit jaunty, almost cheesy, but the other tracks on the set glide around with a really great feel – and make the soundtrack an excellent discovery from 70s Italy. Titles include "Country Piano", "Claudia In Motoretta", "Indagando", "Strip Tease", "Bi Di Bi Da", "Il Colonello", and "Bossanova Della Sposa". 19 tracks in all, including a few previously unissued numbers, and 4 tracks with vocals by I Cantori Moderni di Alessandro Alessandroni! Pablo SchneiderSobre La Hierba – Virgen ... LP
Discomoda/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... $29.99 33.99
A rare bit of soundtrack funk from mid 70s Venezuela – a set that's strongly influenced by Italian cop/crime modes of the time, but sometimes served up with a nicely leaner vibe as well! In addition to the funky guitar, tight basslines, and jazzy horns you might expect – there's also some interesting moments that include odd keyboards, acoustic guitar, and even a violin and piano duet – used in ways to offset more familiar funky styles to really keep things interesting! The music was scored for a sexploitation film of the time, and certainly echoes the way those films were scored around the globe – but as with so much Venezuelan work of the period, there's a very special, very unique approach as well. Titles include "Malandro", "El Secuestro", "Jenny", "la Venganza", "Bajando El Cerro", "Tacarigua", and "Tema De Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury/Sam Records (France), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
One of the greatest French jazz soundtracks ever – a haunting score composed and performed by sax legend Barney Wilen! Barney's work is possibly best known to American audiences for his solos on the Miles Davis soundtrack Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, recorded a year earlier – and this album has Barney working with American players Kenny Clarke, Kenny Dorham, and Duke Jordan to forge a very similar sound. Tracks are spare, moody, and feature a style that's often snakey and a bit modal – perfect for the dark mood of the film, and equally evocative without any image! 12 tracks in all – including "Ambiance Pourpe", "Poursuite Et Metro", "Melodie Pour Les Radio Taxis", "Temoin Dans La Ville", "Sur L'Antenne", and "SOS Radio Taxis". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeLa Trappola Scatta A Beirut/Il Successo ... CD
GDM/Beat (Italy), 1963/1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two groovy Ennio Morricone scores from the 60s – both of them pretty darn great! La Trappola Scatta A Beirut is a hip spy thriller from the time – done with some bold, jazzy inflections on the instrumentation – and styles that echo American and British thrillers of a similar nature. There's some great use of flute and saxophone over more complicated backings – and although there's a bit less of the Morricone sense of space in the overall composition, there's still some key darker touches that are definitely the mark of the maestro. Titles include "Relax Per Un Agente Segreto", "Inseguimento", "Attesa E Fuga", "Agente 505 Missione Compiuta", and "Langiudamente". Next up is the equally jazzy score to Il Successo – a beautiful blend of tenor, vibes, flute, and other sweet instrumental touches – very much in the best Italian soundtrack jazz style of the early 60s. The whole thing's great, and a very overlooked chapter in Morricone's music – with titles that include "Malinconico", "Il Successo", "Per Vittorio", "Allegra Sambina", and "Sarabanda Twist". CD

Beat (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A warmly sensual 70s soundtrack from Italy – scored by the lesser-known Gianfranco Plenizio, but sounding like the best of the time from Morricone! The music here is often slinky and spare – flowing with a subdued sense of eroticism that's never cheesy, and which has a bit more sophistication than you might expect from the exploitative film for which it was written! Many tracks build gently, using bits of piano, or roundly rolling electric bass – never too over the top, but just enough to get things going with some subtle, but effective encouragement. A few numbers have a darker, more atonal feel – clearly the creepier moments of the film – creating the same sort of juxtaposition you'd fine in some of the better known erotic scores of this time. CD features 6 tracks that have never been issued before – a total of 21 titles that include "Requiem", "Foul Sin", "Lost Lover", "Ricordi Di Un Amore", "Grigio Perla", "Hypnosis", "Crowded Solitude", "Ghostvoice", "Sarto Per Signora", and "Voce D'Amore", which features haunting wordless vocals by Edda Dell'Orso! The action scene on the cover is a hint at all the great action within – a mad mix of music that has plenty of the guitar, basslines, and keyboards of Italian cop/crime scores of the time – but which also maybe includes some deeper rock currents as well! There's a few moments where the guitar does a lot more than just riffing – serving up these really strong solos that almost make us wonder if Roberto Pregadio managed to lure a figure from the Italian prog scene into the studio for the recording – giving him just enough small space to deliver a few key solos, without ever disturbing the overall groove of the set! The package features ten tracks in all – including "La Fuga", "Ripresa", "Favolosa Festa Di Danza", "Un Pomeriggio Di Sole", and "Costretti A Fare L'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

The whole thing's one of the more obscure numbers in Luis' soundtrack catalog – but it may well also be one of the best, thanks to titles that include "Hello Quincey", "Tucumania", "Nago", "Pinha Tamburim", "Lisa G", "Members Only", and "Anagramma". A fantastic soundtrack from the great Francis Lai! The record is one of his most unusual – and features a number of short songs that focus on spare keyboard work, either on organ, piano, or electric piano, and with some cool groovy instrumentation, and a bit of light strings and woodwinds. The slow sensuous themes are among some of the best Lai instrumental work we've ever heard – and the soundtrack is a real gem from one of the best points in his career. The set kicks off with the vocal number "Le Passager De La Pluie", sung by the lovely Severine, and includes the cuts "Theme Des Voitures", "L'Arrestation", "Theme Dobbs", "Souvenir De Melancolie", "Le Viol", and "Theme Bestial". Cerberus, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A huge international hit for Morricone – quite a surprise, given the warmth and whimsy in the music – which is a real change from some of the maestro's darker moments of the 70s! The tunes often use light electric instrumentation in these really nice ways – playful, and certainly comedic – but with these occasional deeper touches that are definitely Morricone, too – especially in some of the slower moments that have this great interplay between woodwinds and keyboards. One of these is the track "L'Onorevole Famiglia", worth the price of the album alone! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! Larger orchestrations come into play with smaller combo elements that evoke the new world of jazz and rock on the scene in Rome – and the whole thing is a musical delight throughout – with titles that include "La Dolce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". Demonic sounds, but surprisingly sweet as well – done with this easy-flowing style that's really wonderful – and much more similar to the seductive sound library work of Alessandro Alessandroni, than to some of the starker, darker horror of the time! There's definitely some spooky passages, but they're almost always warmed up in really nice ways – both with keyboards, and with these wordless vocals from the lovely Giulia De Mutiis, who drifts through the record like some sexy ghost. Her vocals almost give the whole thing a more dream-like feel at times – not too atmospheric, but with clouds of sweet sounds that blow through the space in a wonderful way. A great score for a great film – Fellini's 1980 City Of Women, a bizarre fantasy in which Marcello Mastrioanni finally gets his come-uppance from a horde of feminists! Bacalov is at his most playful here – scoring in a style that recalls all of the genius Nino Rota used in his work with Fellini, but also pushing the comedic aspects of the film even more – using some more electric instrumentation on a few tracks, and pushing the carnivalesque aspects of the narrative on others. Two cool Italian spy spoof comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both served up at a level that may well top American film scores of the type from the time! Lallo Gori does wonderful work on Come Svaligimmo La Banca D'Italia – very different than some of his other soundtracks, with a much more jazz-based approach – served up with swinging rhythms, organ lines, flute, and even some great chorus vocals from the very groovy I Cantori Moderni! The tunes are all pretty jaunty and groovy – lots of mod 60s modes – and the soundtrack features 17 titles in all! Next up is the soundtrack for Il Lungo Il Corto Il Gatto – music that's equally groovy and filled with plenty of jazzy elements too – as well as more of those great vocals, this time sung by the chorus of Nora Orlandi. 30 titles in all on the CD – and a well-done collection of tracks that never saw the light of day on record at the time! Music Box (France), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two very rare soundtracks from French genius Michel Legrand – back to back on a single CD! The work here was done right after Legrand's classic run with director Jacques Demy – and the music on Les Feux De A La Chandeleur demonstrates the deepening in Legrand's sound that took place during those years – his shift from shorter, jazzier numbers to masterful command of a larger orchestra graced with a wonderfully sensitive touch at times. But make no mistake, there's also some groovier numbers on the score for Les Feux – and a few nice jazzy bits too – which pepper the soundtrack in ways that only further elaborate the richness of Legrand at his best. Titles include "Lettre A Laura", "Black Fire Dream", "Balade Des Filles", "Le Bebe D'Annie", and "Le Chapeau Rouge". Next up is the score for La Ville Fille – done as a number of very short sound cues, most under a minute long – but all packed with that strong sense of melody that always makes Legrand's music so great – a bit more playful than the first score on the CD, but still sophisticated and deep at all the best moments. Fantastic! This is the French pressing of the Michel Legrand score to Jacques Demy's incredible 1965 film The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. Every word of dialogue in the film is sung, and Legrand came up with an amazing array of themes to carry the emotion of the film. Embedded in here are lines that later became worldwide hits – like "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens" – but in this version, the songs are just themes in the huge pastiche of dialogue and narrative, and they lurk behind the score in a beautiful way. This is one of our favorite all-time soundtracks, and this version has a very lovely cover with Catherine Deneuve standing amidst some umbrellas! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bruno NicolaiBruno Nicolai In Giallo (La Coda Dello Scorpione/Il Tuo Vizio E Una Stanza/Tutti I Colori De Buio/Perche Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue) (4CD set) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful package – one that brings together four killer horror soundtracks from Italian maestro Bruno Nicolai! First up is La Coda Dello Scorpione – a dark dark masterpiece from the legendary Bruno Nicolai – written for an equally dark thriller with a wonderful edge! The work here is on a par with that of Nicolai's frequent partner, Ennio Morricone – often using full orchestrations to score a deeper theme in the film – but also often moving to lighter, leaner moments based around a simpler instrumental mode. There's a staccato feel to some of the best moments on the set – spare and edgey, with a sense of dread that's almost palpable! Next is Il Tuo Vizio E Una Stanza Chiusa E Solo Io Ne Ho La Chiave – a wonderful score by Bruno Nicolai – one that follows strongly in the mode of work from the time by frequent collaborator, Ennio Morricone! The approach on most tracks is spare and moody – using a lot of harpsichord over light orchestrations – and going for a tense feel that matches the spirit of the horror film, but which also has some surprisingly sweet and sexy moments from time to time. On Tutti I Colori De Buio, Bruno Nicolai's at his most Morricone-esque – and has crafted a dreamy set of tunes that hardly matches the dark Satanist thriller they were recorded for! The melodies are light, and spare, with isolated and drawn-out piano and string passages – plus some wonderful wordless vocals from the great Edda Dell'Orso – floating along in magical Morricone territory. Apart from a few tense moments, the whole thing has this moodier, mellow feel – with some lighter lovely tunes that would be right at home in a Mondo Morricone type set. Last up is one of our all-time Nicolai favorites, Perche Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue Sul Corpo Di Jennifer – one of the greatest soundtracks we've ever heard from Bruno Nicolai – a wonderful array of lightly groovy tunes that's as fantastic as any of the Mondo Morricone work from the same time! The main theme of the film has a catchy La Donna Invisible sort of feel – building on waves of sound with piano over orchestrations, skipping along to an altered bossa beat – showing up in a number of different variants throughout the score. Other tracks are darker and moodier, but really vary things up to fit the moods of the scene – using Morricone-styled bits of harpsichord, violin, or strings to come up with some incredible sounds. This 4CD set comes with a great slipcover, and a big booklet of notes! CD

It's no secret that some of the greatest jazz soundtracks ever were recorded in Paris – and this CD contains 2 of them! Universal (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A few other tunes are a bit mellow, but in a great way that really fits the watery title of the set – cool and shimmering, and with a great sense of sound that really shows Legrand's talents. A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! An early 80s soundtrack from the great Piero Umiliani – but one that seems to echo some styles from deeper in his past, including some of of the jazz elements he used in his early days – and some of the more unusual sonic textures he created for his sound library projects in the 70s! The film's a comedy, but as usual with Umiliani, the music is way more than you might expect – sometimes light and melodic, other times served up with unusual sonic elements – maybe more in the warmer side of the spectrum than the cold, but always with a knowledge of darkness at all the right points. The main theme gets some strong renditions in a few different ways – and there's also a great instrumental titled "Ultimissime", which has great Fender Rhodes – and the killer "Samba Mah Na", which uses Brazilian percussion and brassy horns to rework Umiliani's classic "Mah Na Mah Na" theme! A few tracks even get a bit funky – and the CD features 20 tracks from the film, plus notes in Italian and English. CD

Freaked-out fuzzy work from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – all with a sound that's quite appropriate for a film that was also known as Hallucination Strip! There's a lot more guitar in here than you'll hear on other Italian 70s scores – often used in fuzzy, psychedelic ways with a definite rock influences – but also laying out in more spare, open-ended styles too – almost spacey at points, with some really weird sounds mixed in alongside keyboards and percussion! The music has some touches of darkness, but not really any of the atonality of some of the horror work of the generation – and even though many tracks are short, they pack in plenty of punch, and plenty of fresh ideas too. ✨✧ Henry ManciniMommie Dearest (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Paramount/La La Land, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly sensitive score from Henry Mancini – much more so than we'd expect for this famous film about Joan Crawford's child-rearing habits! Mancini's at his mature best here – and there's lots of lovely, beautiful little tunes that kind of unfold like gentle flowers – slight strings and light woodwinds that move slowly, but with this really evocative quality – one that builds up a bit more strongly as the score progresses towards the end. Really great stuff – and a rich reminder that Mancini has so many great moments that go way beyond his familiar hits. Titles include "Spoiled Children", "Home Again", "No More Pain", "Test Of Wills", "Battle Axe", "On Your Mark", "My Darling Daughter", and "Of Shoes & Socks". Great CD reissue – with 9 more bonus tracks – including source cues and other older music used in the film. CD

La La Land, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Nelson Riddle's finest moments of the 60s – the wonderful original soundtrack for the campy full length Batman film! The tunes have a totally excellent blend of the dramatic and the jazzy – often using full orchestrations, but in a tight way that goes for rhythmic passages and tight little themes – all hitting hard with a style that goes "Zap!" "Pow!" "Slam!" CD

La La Land, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
We're alright. . .don't nobody worry 'bout us, we're smiling like fools at the sounds of this most classic of lowbrow 80s comedies – the unimpeachably hilarious Caddyshack – with we-don't-care-how-uncool-you-think-they-may-be pop anthems by Kenny Loggins and original music by Johnny Mandel! The Loggins tunes blend a masterful ear for the pop & soul hits of the previous couple decades, they're undeniable fun and catchy (if profoundly unhip, boo and hoo) and the cheeky bits of score by Mandel co-opting classical compositions in the interest of toilet humor are just as boisterous. Titles include "I'm Alright", "Make The Move" and "Mr Night" by Kenny Loggins, "There She Goes" by The Beat, "Divine Intervention", "Marina" and "The Big Bang" by Johnny Mandel and more. ✨✧ Jaime Delgado AparicioEl Embajador Y Yo (plus Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio) ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1966. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
An amazing little soundtrack – written in mid 60s Peru by jazz pianist Jaime Delgado Aparicio, but easily on a par with some of the best American or Italian scores from the time! The music's got a really wonderful feel throughout – jazz at the core, but with touches of spy soundtrack scoring and some of the lighter, more comedic modes of the Italian scene. Delgado uses a core combo with heavy piano, percussion, and some great trumpet and tenor – almost with the tightness of the Basso-Valdambrini group – but he also expands the sound with bits of strings and some fuller orchestrations, used to shade in some amazing colors that roll, dip, and turn with the beautiful grooves penned for the set. The whole thing's tremendous, with equally great production that creates some odd twists and turns that further keep things interesting as the album rolls on. Titles include "Elm Embajador Y Yo", "Sexy Surf", "Llegando A La Capital", "Isometria", "Todo El Mundo Me Persigue", "Lucha En El Mar", and "La Arana". Added to the soundtrack is Jamie's 1964 album – Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio – a crackling bit of piano jazz from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – and a record that's somewhere between the best of Horace Silver on Blue Note, and some of the Brazilian bossa trios of the time! There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout – round, rolling basslines punctuated by great work on the drum kit – all topped by beautifully lyrical lines from Delgado Aparicio on piano – filled with color, light, and life throughout – and soloing with a depth that's rare for such a young player! Titles include a great version of Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", plus "The Climate", "Autumn Leaves", "Walkin", and "Blue Daniel". CD

Rare soundtrack work from French composer Claude Bolling – best known for his "jazz meets classical" recordings, but equally great at penning a compelling score! Tracks include "La Plaza", "Karpoff", "Noches Mexicanas", "Pop Mod", and "Tatiana". LP, Vinyl record album

Vroommm/Italian Golden Mondo (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99 About April 24, 2024
A rare television soundtrack from Italian jazzman Sandro Brugnolini – easily some of his most hard-hitting work, and a mighty cool record to boot! Brugnolini mixes small combo jazz and some darker orchestrations in a shifting palette of sounds from track to track – which means that some numbers are hard groovers, others have this brooding quality, and still others have this incredible tinkling piano that seems to float in the air – maybe the most gentle passages of the record, but also some of the most eerie too – especially in the way that Sandro mixes darkness and light with effortless ease! Most numbers are short, and work together beautifully – a very vivid record, even away from the images on the screen. Titles include "Aggressione", "Tallonato", "La Notte Muore", "Colluttazione", "Quasi Un Sogno", "Incidente Provocato", and "Tempus Fugit". CD

CAM (Italy), 1968. Used ... $19.99
A rare treat from the legendary Clarke-Boland Big Band – a sublime set of Italian soundtrack numbers first recorded in 1968! The set was cut at the height of the Italian soundtrack golden age, in Italy, where the group had been working and recording heavily – making for a perfect fit of styles: the sweet and groovy compositions of talents like Nino Rota, Armando Trovajoli, Piero Piccioni, and others, handled with the fire and energy that had become the trademark of the Clarke-Boland ensemble! The set grooves very nicely – with hard-swinging versions of tracks that include "More", "Seven Golden Men", "Your Smile", "Saxology", "La Hora De La Verdad", "Canto D'Amore", and "Questi Vent Anni Miei". A killer French soundtrack from the start of the 70s – four very groovy cuts that were used in the film Jeu De Dames, a movie that also circulated under the more titillating title of Sex Revolution! The music is full of freak and fuzz – Hammond organ, great guitar lines, and plenty of romping mod rhythms that feel more like late 60s French grooves than work from 1973 – all given the sorts of very cool production touches that you'd expect from bigger giants of the field, like Michel Colombier and Alan Goraguer! Beat (Italy), Late 80s/1990s. New Copy 7CD ... $94.99 119.99
A huge collection of later work from these two Italian maestros – material done long after their fame in film during the 60s and 70s, but with a richness that really matches those classic recordings! The work here is much more obscure than some of their famous film scores, and served up in a massive 7CD box that really fills in the gaps during these later years – bringing together work that we never would have heard otherwise, and in modes that update some of the instrumentation of previous decades, but which also reflects some greater care with orchestrations over leaner modes. The set features many tracks from each show – programs that include Tomorrow, Nel Gorgo Del Peccato, A Big Man, Passi D'Amore, Il Cielo Non Cade Mai, Quando Ancora Non C'Erano I Beatles, La Storia Spezzata, Il Ragazzo Dal Kimono D'Oro, Uomo Contro Uomo, Cinque Ragazze A Parigi, Ti Ho Adottato Per Simpatia, La Moglie Nella Cornice, Un Amore Rubato, Il Prezzo Della Vita, Vite A Termine, La Storia Di Chara, Mia Per Sempre, Addio E Ritorno, Dove Comincia Il Sole, and Sotto Il Cielo Dell'Africa. The whole thing was recorded in a church – and titles include "Suono Aperto", "Oltre La Soglia", "Silver Saddle", "With You", "Movin On", "Chaco", "Bunny Love Song", "Zombi 2", "Sette Note In Nero", "Rusty Games", "The Weeping Woman", and "Un Gatto Nel Cervallo". A really haunting bit of early electronics by Jean Michel Jarre – the soundtrack for the film Les Granges Brulees from the early 70s! The work here has a very different sound than Jarre's later music – not nearly so neat and tidy, with lots of rough edges, and shorter tunes that have a really kind of spooky, other-wordly feel. And yet despite these qualities, there's also a good degree of melody to the set – as the shorter tracks bubble forth with some great themes that sound even more enchanting in the analogue electronic mode. Weird and wild sounds from 60s/70s composer Andrzej Korzynski – an artist we mostly know from soundtrack material, but represented here by a rich array of rare material from his personal archives! The scope of styles is really wonderful – as the set steps between funky numbers and very offbeat instrumentals – kind of the full range of sound library elements you might get from the hippest European scenes of the 70s – no surprise, given that this material was recorded in France, Italy, and Poland! Some tunes are heavy on electronics, others use a mix of acoustic and electric instruments together – and almost all the tracks are relatively short, and work together as this shifting palette of musical statements from Korzynski – almost a mini-movie in sound, with all the vivid qualities that reference implies. Titles include "Third Part Of The Night Main Theme)", "Diabel", "La Grabuge", "Roza Roza", "Bossa Nova", "Saved From Oblivion", "Trying To Catch A Fly", "Agent No 1", "Tajemnica Enigmy", and "W Instyucie". Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99 About March 27, 2024 (delayed)
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! ✨✧ Henry ManciniGunn . . . Number One! ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good ... $5.99
Nice 60s crime jazz from Mancini! Although Mancini's fame was made in the late 50s for his work on the classic Peter Gunn TV show, it's less known that he also did the score for the less-than-successful Peter Gunn film. Directed in 1967 by Blake Edwards, the film was a weak attempt to transfer the Gunn image to the big screen – but Mancini remained above the fray, as his solid scoring is just about the only thing we remember about the film today. The tracks include 60's remakes of some nice themes from the original show, plus a few other nice numbers thrown in for good measure. Jack Nitzsche/Mick Jagger/Randy NewmanPerformance – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1970. Sealed ... $21.99
The jury is sometimes out on the Mick Jagger on-screen performance in the Nicolas Roeg film Performance – but the soundtrack is something pretty separate entirely, and really says a lot more about the spirit of late 60s Warner Brothers Records in LA than it does the arthouse cinema scene in England! The great Jack Nitzsche composed a number of instrumental tracks for the score – maybe his first time in this mode, and prefacing some later 70s successes to come – with titles that include "Rolls Royce & Acid", "Harry Flowers", and "Natural Magic". Other Warner talents get a hand in the music too – as Randy Newman conducted all of Nitzsche's charts, and also sings "Gone Dead Train" – while Ry Cooder delivers bottleneck solos on "Get Away" and "Powis Square". There's also some nice soul-based moments – the cut "Wake Up N*ggers" by The Last Poets, and "Poor White Hound Dog" and "Performance" by Merry Clayton. And yes, Mick does get to sing on one tune – the album's "Memo From Turner" – and the set is completed by Buffy St Marie work on "The Hashishin" and "Dead Dead Red". LP, Vinyl record album

The range of the tracks is pretty surprising – from spare sax solos by Portal, to Latin-tinged tunes and tangos, to spacey soundscapes with a mixture of jazz and electronics.
