Janko Nilovic & Davy JonesDefinitive Juju Records Collection 1968/1969 ... LP
JuJu/Broc (France), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 42.99
A really rare slice of work from the funky genius Janko Nilovic – not the sound library grooves which have gained him fame over the decades – but instead a batch of rare cuts from his own short-lived record label, which he formed in 1968 with soul singer Davy Jones! Nilovic and Jones wrote all the tunes on the set, and they're presented by a variety of different artists – but have a unified feel that certainly comes from the strong instrumentation provided by Janko! The tunes are in a mix of mod 60s styles – some soul, some Hammond-heavy groovers, and some with a more expansive vibe that's almost a psychedelic take on the spirit of French pop during the period. The set features every a and b-side of the six singles issued by the label – plus four more bonus remixes – and titles include "Voodoo Juju Obsession (parts 1 & 2)" by K Ptyacunthapuserectus, "Lover's Summer Song" and "Moon Man" by Bobby Cannon, "Restless Gringo" and "The Lost & The Lonely" by Spiritus M, "Groovy Kinda Samba" and "The Juju Is The Thing" by Abra K Dabra, "Treasure Lee" and "Voodoo Juju" by Killer Steen, and "Tinka Bell" and "There's A Little Old Lady" by Tinka Bell. VariousATA Records – The Library Archive Vol 3 ... LP
ATA (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
Mad sound library funk from a host of contemporary artists – all bands that have recorded singles for the hip ATA label, coming together here on a set of cuts that really lives up to the best funky 70s modes of famous labels like KPM or DeWolfe! The set doesn't list individual artists, but there is a nice sense of variety throughout – sometimes a bit more electric, sometimes a bit more percussion-heavy – jazzy one minute, funk the next – with a lineup of cuts that's all-killer, no filler at all! The numbers have a vibe that's every bit as strong as their evocative titles – and tracks include "Penthouse In Pernambuco", "Satan Stalks Among Us", "The Street Is Family", "Pineapple Diode Daquiri", "Ten On The Door", "Hips & Lips", and "Fear On Phobos". Pieter VerlindenPV Tapes 3 – De Komst Van Joachim Stiller (LP & 7inch) ... LP
678 Records (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
This entry in the very cool PV Tapes series features the full soundtrack music for a TV series titled De Komst Van Joachim Stiller – work that opens up in ways that are even more expansive than some of the other releases in the series! The tracks are short, in a cue-type style – but contain some beautifully evocative instrumental moments, shifting through themes handled on flute, saxophone, organ, and even trombone – plus one cool tune that's listed as having a "bad saxophone" too! The LP features 33 numbers over the course of the album – and the bonus 7" single includes both carillon and orchestral versions of the main theme – but stretched out into versions that are each more than 7 minutes long! ✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationDon't Stop ... LP
678 Records (Netherlands), 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fender Rhodes and vibes – a combination that always sounds fantastic, but which maybe sounds especially great here in a rare 70s session from Dutch keyboard legend Rob Franken! Rob's usually fantastic, no matter what the setting – but here, he's working on a set of spacious grooves that get plenty of great tones and colors from the vibes of Wolfgang Schulter – who works alongside Rob in a groove that's right up there with some of the best MPS funky electric jazz from the early 70s! About half the tracks on the set were written by German pianist Michael Naura – who himself was also doing some great Fender Rhodes work in the 70s – and titles include "Call", "Samba For Sander", "Song For Josef", "Barracuda", "Brown Out", "Concensus", and "Serenade For Myself". ✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

Jazzy keyboards from the great Rob Franken – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Titles include "Por Hermeto", "How'd You Do It Stanley", "Images", "November", "Up The Street Round the Corner Down The Block", "Afro Blue", and "Colours". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pieter VerlindenPV Tapes 2 – Mensenwerk/Een Spoor Van Carla ... LP
678 Records (Netherlands), 1976/1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two sweet slices of work from Dutch film score genius Pieter Verlinden – who also turns out to be a hell of a keyboardist too! Side one features music from Mensenwerk – a documentary, but one that's scored like some of the hip Italian ones of the decade – with a groovy mix of funk and other cinematic modes that you'd hardly hear in a Ken Burns project of more recent vintage! At times, there's almost some watery elements to the music – ala some of the best Sven Libaek scores of the time – and the set features 20 short tracks from the project, issued here for the first time! The flipside is of slightly later vintage – the score to Een Spoor Van Carla, which has Verlinden really going nuts on an Oberheim – definitely more of an 80s vibe, given the instrument – but with an equally thrilling groove as the work on side one – served up here on 18 short tracks. Matt BerrySimplicity ... CD
KPM/Acid Jazz (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really fantastic pairing of forces – as keyboard collector Matt Berry serves up a special set of instrumental tracks for the KPM sound library – many of which are done on the kinds of keys that KPM were recording back in the day! You might know Matt for his work on screen, but he's also a very devoted musician, with a rich legacy of projects – and although we love his vocals on his more pop-oriented records, this set lets his keyboard skills really come to the forefront! The set features Berry on electric pianos, guitars, bass, and other keyboards – assisted by the funky drums of Craig Blundell, on titles that include "Rising Bass", "Set The Scene", "Simple Basics", "Widescreen Features", "Too Many Hats", "Telescopic", and "Driving Seat". Sandro Brugnolini/CarniniBeat Drammatico, Underground, Pop Elettronic (with bonus CD) ... LP
Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $30.99 34.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". ✨✧ Sandro Brugnolini/Stefano TorossiMusica Per Commenti Sonori (with bonus CD) ... LP
Carosello/Schema (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An Italian funk double-header – a sweet little set from the end of the 60s, and one that features killer cuts from both Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi! We love either artist on their other own records, but there also seems to be something about putting them together here that makes them even better than before – certainly funkier, as the album's full of the kind of sharp, hard-grooving titles that first made us fall in love with sound library records in the first place! The date of the album's 1969, and both musicians make nice use of psych elements in their instrumentation – adding a bit of fuzz, wah-wah, or trippy guitar in just the right spaces – never going over the top, or getting too indulgent – but just moving in a groove that's tightly jazz funky at the bottom, and maybe a bit freaky at the top. Wonderful work throughout – and titles include "Sweet Beat", "Repetition", "Starter", and "Makkaresh" by Stefano Torossi – and "Wawa", "Motuproprio", "Polyphony", and "Flyer" by Sandro Brugnolini. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus CD with entire album!)
