✨✧ Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". Cosmic NeighbourhoodLibrary Music Vol 1 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Kit (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Cosmic Neighbourhood move into the realm of sound library music with this delightful little record – a 10" album that's filled with short, captivating tunes – mostly melodic, and with electronic components, but delivered in a style that's really organic, and very beautiful! At some level, the music almost feels like a more condensed take on some of the Japanese ambient modes of years past – but with a faster progression of ideas, given the shortness of the tunes. Yet there's also something maybe a bit more universal – as if Cosmic Neighbourhood have found a way to create the sort of little tunes that might be rumbling around somewhere out there in nature. Titles include "Nature Spirit", "Waving Tree", "Night People", "Witches Hat", "Pine Wizard", "Overgrown Garden", "Fortune Teller", and "Caterpillar". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Craig KupkaCrystals – New Music For Relaxation 2 ... CD
Folkways, 1982. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Beautiful sounds from the overlooked minimalist composer Craig Kupka – a set that features two very different tracks, each issued by Folkways Records – with a presentation that's both far away from the more academic records of the time, and some of the self-released work of the growing New Age underground! Side one features the long "Trombones Of Lithia" – piece that's heavy on the resonant sound of the trombone, but stretched out in this really longform way – nicely meditative, and clearly processed with a bit of electronics, but still with a warmly acoustic core. Side two features "Crystals" – a tune that has more keys, but a mix of 70s analogue and early 80s digital – again given some elements in the background that make the whole thing feel a lot warmer than you might expect, yet still with some of the experimental elements of earlier electronic composition. Sven LibaekMusic Of Sven Libaek ... LP
Festival/Votary (Australia), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 32.98
One of the earliest albums ever from the great Sven Libaek – an artist who'd be better known for his famous soundtrack work in the 70s! As you might guess from his name – Sven hails from Scandinavia – but he made most of his career and best music in Australia – and this album was one of his first! The style here is jazz-based, but Libaek already shows those great flowing modes that he brought to his music for film – and the presentation is superb – as the ensemble is loaded with some of the best Australian jazz musicians of the period – including Don Burrows and Errol Buddle on reeds, George Golla on guitar, and John Sangster on vibes – adding in so many great touches in a way that almost makes the whole thing feel like a Cal Tjader recording at times. Titles include "Happy City", "Done Away With", "Race Pace", "Unwritten Movie", "Lake Moondara", "Northern Territory Baroque Theme", "Gold Coast Fanfare", and "Man & A Mural". Alessandro AlessandroniTrip Around The World ... LP
Stella/Saar Milano (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Beautiful sounds from one of the coolest Italian composers of all time – one of our go-to favorites for both soundtrack and sound library material! This set has Alessandro Alessandroni hitting some sweet 70s modes – funky at times, slinky and sexy at others – all with this fantastic ear for sound and space, with a quality level that really sets him apart – and which makes this totally obscure gem every bit as great as some of the key Italian cinematic classics from the period! Imagine – you're working in the very solitary space of a sound library, knowing that you're going to make a record that will never be for sale in the record racks – yet you completely bring your a-game to the proceedings. That's what makes Alessandroni such a giant – and we're sure you'll agree once you hear this music! The set features some great harmonica bits from Gianfranco Di Lelio, plus cool keyboards, guitar, and titles that include "My Sitar", "Seven Steps", "A Day In The Sun", "Oceano", "Everest", "Beach Party", "Summer Breeze", "Desert Inn", and "Love On The Sand". Luis Bacalov & Ennio MorriconePitturamusica ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $40.99
An album with a very basic cover, but one that's got a very deep dimension in sound – thanks to some very groundbreaking work from Italian sound library giants Ennio Morricone and Luis Bacalov! The music is maybe mostly in the territory of Morricone's experimental work – especially his contributions to the legendary Il Gruppo – and the style is very different than we're used to hearing from Bacalov, who we know best for sweeter themes and action-drenched soundtrack work! Instead, the music here comes from a variety of familiar instruments – piano, violin, cello, trombone, and voice – but all used in really unusual ways, with properties that go far beyond their usual sonic expectations – at a level that's really striking throughout! The vocal numbers almost recall some of the dadaist experiments of earlier in the century, and the piano and string passages would be right at home next to work by Luigi Nono or Gyorgi Ligeti. The work was created for an exhibition of paintings by the painter Masci – and titles include "Corpopaesaggio 2", "Mela", "La Gioconda", "SB", "Conchiglia", and "Venere D'Urbino". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited editon black vinyl pressing – in an extra heavy cardboard sleeve!)

✨✧ John BakerJohn Baker Tapes Vol 1 – BBC Radiophonics – Rare & Unreleased Workshop Recordings 1963 to 1974 ... CD
Trunk (UK), 1960s/Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Strange themes and weird electronics from John Baker – one of the coolest composers at the BBC in the 60s and 70s, heard here in a batch of 49 rare tracks! Most numbers are quite short – commercial or TV theme length – but the brevity of the tunes is part of their charm, as the tunes burst out with brilliance then quickly disappear before Baker's ideas get too old or stale – in a way that makes the album a wonderful pastiche of short musical bursts and occasional sung or spoken vocal parts! The whole thing's wonderful – almost like flipping the channels through a range of cool British TV shows from years back, but without the main plots or dialogue – just groovy sounds, many of which are electronic. Titles include "Heavy Plant Crossing", "Codename", "Vendetta The Ice Cream Man", "Newstime BBC", "Man Alive UFO", "Submarines", "Oranges & Lemons", "Sling Your Hook", "Suivez La Piste", "Square Two", and "The Locusts". (Soundtracks, Sound Library) CD
(Out of print.)
