Early solo work from Carl Graves – a Canadian soul artist who was first heard with the band Skylark, but who sounds pretty darn nice on his own! Carl's got a free and light voice that works well with the tightly crafted arrangements of the set – kind of a real mix of styles, but one that comes off surprisingly well on the best tracks. There's a few upbeat numbers on here that don't work that well, but the mellower tunes are all pretty nice – and titles include "You're Gonna Be All Alone", "Welcome Home", "Don't Throw It All Away", "That's The Way Love Is", "Be Tender With My Love", and "How Can I Be A Man". Richie Havens is way past the folksy mode of his roots by this point – working in a set of smooth arrangements by William Smitty Smith and Booker T – a style that mixes electric touches with Havens' still-raspy vocals, an approach that's a bit like that used on some of Bill Withers Columbia Records, put possibly even a bit more mainstream here. The real issue almost seems to be the choice of songs – as the record features covers that occasionally seem a bit ill-placed, but which come off as nice oddities at the best moments – like Richie's versions of "Do It Again" and "Long Train Running". This one's got a rootsier feel – almost in a southern soul mode, with Ben singing in a style that really brings out the rougher edges in his voice, against arrangements by Bob Gallo that have a slightly dramatic feel. A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami – that maturation of southern soul during the disco era – as warmer, more modern touches came into play with rootsier styles of vocals! A masterful fusion set from guitarist Lee Ritenour – one that expands his sound a bit more than usual by adding in vocals on a number of tracks – but in a way that really gets at the mainstream soul influences that bubble through his jazz work! The set features key vocal appearances from Patti Austin, Tom Baylor, and Bill Champlin – all singers who really know how to respect the instrumental side of a tune, too – which is great, given that the record also features keyboards from Dave Grusin and Patrice Rushen too. One of the great "songbook" albums by the Rubber Band – and a very different set than their better-known Hendrix record! As you'd guess by the title, this session has the group taking on Cream – performing instrumental versions of some of the group's most groove-heavy tunes, but doing so in a way that avoids the risk of falling short of Eric Clapton's guitar work – by just not using much guitar at all! Instead, the versions of the tunes are funkily baroque – still with heavy Ginger Baker-styled drums on the bottom, but often using strings and woodwinds in weird ways to carry the rest of the tune. The approach is almost like some of the best Brit Easy records from the time – with a full orchestral sound thinned into a tight rock funk groove! The set's got an especially great version of "Strange Brew", with organ that sounds like it could be played by Alan Hawkshaw – plus the tracks "White Room", "Deserted Cities Of The Heart", "Toad", "We're Going Wrong", "Those Were The Days", "Sunshine Of Your Love", and "Sweet Wine". Soaring Italian disco from the end of the 70s – a set arranged and conducted by Rudy Trevisi, with superb polished production from Jacques Fred Petrus! The style here is very commercial, but still pretty great – long tunes that spin out with gimmicks that might appeal to a crossover club scene – including catchy pop vocals that might have you humming some of these tunes more than others as you're riding home in a cab from Studio 54! Slow slinking soul from Sam Salter – a mainstream set, but a pretty nice one too – thanks to a no-apologies approach to the ballads and mellow tracks that keeps the record firmly in check whenever it might falter! Sam's not the kind of singer who's going to change the world, but he does a pretty great job of what he does – and this album's a good reminder that there was some decent soul laying around at the bottom of the mainstream in the pre-Neo Soul years. A pretty tasty album of instrumentals – all Motown, as you'd expect by the title, and all played by the Soultown Symphony, a side project of Wes Farrell and Joe Renzetti. The band have a similar style to the Jazz Rock Symposium – another Renzetti group on Anvil – with driving rock-heavy instrumentation set amidst larger orchestrations with strings and Motown-esque arrangements. The record's not totally funky – but there's a nice hard soul sock on many tracks, more so than on the original versions of some of the songs it covers. Disco 9000 is Johnnie Taylor's 3rd release for Columbia – a great batch of smooth soul tracks with a lot less of the "disco" that you'd expect from the title! Johnnie produced the session himself – and the album was recorded as a soundtrack (to a film that was later retitled Fass Black), but works well on its own as a straight soul release. Most tracks are relatively long, in that smooth midtempo groove that Johnnie was using at the time – and the combination of his bluesy vocals and modern soul production really makes the set sparkle! The record draws strongly from the group's indie roots in the funky 45 scene – and the album's filled with short tracks that bump along in jagged rhythms, offbeat arrangements, and some slight touches of sweeter soul. One of Wither's most underrated sets, a nice effort from the latter part of his Columbia career. The set has the sort of modern soul polish throughout that separates these CBS sides from his earlier grittier work for Sussex, and though the sound has a little more commercial and mainstream appeal than some of the funkier folksier early albums, it's aged a lot better than we might have predicted upon its release. Overall the vibe is a lot like the excellent Menagerie album which immediately preceded this, with some nice jazzy touches, and even though it didn't produce a big hit like "Lovely Day", it does features some arrangements by Wade Marcus that contribute to the warm, polished production. Funky funky California – and a great set of rare grooves from the 70s! The folks at Luv N Haight records are up to their old tricks – digging through the crates for the kind of hard-to-find funky tracks that first gave birth to the fame of the Ubiquity label. The set traces a sound that barely shows up in the history books – the harder funky sound of California in the 70s, a scene that was mostly underground, and which stood in stark contrast to the smoother sounds coming out on major labels at the time. There's a great late 70s sophisti-soul harmony approach to the set – one that reminds us a lot of the work of Windy City – and although the album's only got 3 tracks, they're all pretty great. One of a few rare albums recorded as a leader from bassist Cleveland Eaton – a player who first rose to fame with Maurice White in the second Ramsey Lewis trio – and one who gave the world some amazingly hip records on the Black Jazz label in the 70s! This set is a unique effort for the label of Philly soul team of Gamble & Huff – yet the set was recorded in Chicago, and has a wickedly funky vibe that's very much like the coolest Chess/Cadet material of the period – nice fuzzy touches around the edges, and some righteous soul currents too! The sound here is a bit tighter than before, but in a good way – a style that has the group's core funk energy mixed with some added strings and horns from Mike Lewis – all served up by producer Willie Clarke in that hip, syncopated TK groove of the time! Robert Moore leads the group on percussion – and this time around, there's some really great electric elements to the sound – especially the guitar parts, which have a cool snakey feel at points. We know what you're thinking: "These guys were best in the 70s." Hold that thought for a moment and check out this great album – because unlike a lot of their other chart-topping contemporaries from 1972 and 1973, the O'Jays actually continued to mature as a group, and managed to turn out some really fantastic material during the 80s. This album is really quite nice – and feature the band's great harmony stylings set to some beautiful modern soul arrangements, with a really sweet mellow groove throughout. A smoking batch of funky grooves that has a lot more edge than most of the other work going on at the label at the time! There's echoes of Rick James funk in the mix, but the overall style is looser and freer too – almost with an ear towards some of the indie club styles of the time, yet tuned towards the tightness that you'd expect from Motown at its best. The arrangements are superb, and the band have a way of keeping the ensemble upfront throughout – yet also avoiding any of the cliches that other groups would hit so often. Funky madness from the legendary Rhythm Makers – a dancefloor combo with a really incredible groove! The group has an approach that's a lot like Kool & The Gang at their best, or like some of the best mid 70s albums by the Kay Gees or Fatback – lots of bass at the bottom, very tight vamping by the band, and a wikki-wikki funky sound that's totally great! Many of the tracks on the set make good use of moog or keyboards – never too much, but just the right dose to spook things up a bit – and although many of the cuts have vocals, the overall focus is still in the instrumentation – which always comes across pretty darn great, and which is played with incredible precision throughout! The combo later morphed into GQ, but they've got a much rawer sound here – and titles include "Can You Feel It (parts 1 & 2)", "You Better Believe It", "Soul On Your Side", "Zone", "Funk N You", and "Street Dreamin". A really rich second album from Ripple – a group who took awhile to return to the studio, but really developed a lot in the process! The combo started out as a straight funk act – but here, they really take off with a tight approach to their instrumentation – razor-sharp work on guitar, keyboards, bass, and percussion – soaring off into the clouds with energy that more than matches the image on the cover! Given their Atlanta roots, there's a vibe here that's a bit like some of the best Tommy Stewart material of the time – and Floyd Smith produces the group on the record, really finding a great way to blend everything together, but without ever losing an edge! A killer bit of Latin funk from the west coast scene of the 70s – the only album we've ever seen from Sapo, but a set that almost blows away the efforts of bigger groups like Malo or El Chicano! There's a bit more funk in the mix here than in some of the group's contemporaries – a leaner, more soulful sound that's totally great – and topped with these cool compressed vocals from singer Richard Bean, who's got a very distinctive approach! The rhythms are wonderful – and the album explodes with great tracks that combine equal parts Latin, funk, and soul – all in a way that really lives up to the best promise of such a combination – and never falls too heavily on one or the other side of the fence. Titles include the killer break track "Been Had", the slamming electric jam "Ritmo Del Corazon", the fast modal groover "It's The Music", and the massive "Sapo's Montuno", with some very lively solos! The title's a bit strange – given that Bunny Sigler started out as a soul singer in the late 60s, and continued to record well into the 70s too – yet it's also a reminder that by the time of this set, Sigler had become a real powerhouse on the Philly club scene – working as a producer and arranger for a host of other artists too! All that strong work comes to bear on this album – done by Bunny in close collaboration with Instant Funk, who provide lots of sharp-edged grooves that are heavy on guitar – and a nice change from the usual disco modes of the time. Later work from Brian Auger's Oblivion Express group – really pushing the envelope from previous work with a soaring blend of fusion and soul! The keyboards are still very firmly at the front of the sound – stretching out a lot from Brian's original work on organ – and the group features Lenny White on drums, kicking things up a bit nicely, with that outerspace groove he was laying down on some of his own records at the time. Pure genius from the B Baker Chocolate Company – a set that's equal parts fusion and soul, held together by these rich arrangements that really send the whole thing home! The album's never too slick, yet has a sense of perfection that matches some of the best soulful fusion dates at Blue Note or Fantasy in the mid 70s – a quality that's especially strong on the vocal tracks on the set – one of which features Lew Kirton in the lead! The players are all totally top-shelf – and include Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff on keyboards, John Faddis and Marvin Stamm on trumpets, and Jimmy Ponder on guitar – and the set's got a beautiful balance that few other records like this can match. Lew Kirton sings on "It's Where You're Coming From", and "Dreamer" features Gene Scott – and instrumental tracks include the funky classic "Snowblower", plus "Carousel" and "Spirit Level". One of Tyrone Davis' last albums for Dakar – and a great one too – issued in 1976 before the demise of that label, and Tyrone's big move to Columbia Records! Tyrone's still working strongly here in that great Chicago mix of smooth and rough – a sound first forged on his early Dakar hits, and carried through strongly here by arrangers Tom Tom and James Mack – who still keep a lot of the indie elements that made Davis' music for Dakar great right from the start. The centerpiece of the album is the title track "Turning Point", and it's situated in a set of other nice tunes, a number of which have that smoothed-out feel that Tyrone brought to his work in the late 70s. Includes a remake of "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" (done at a nice ballad tempo), plus "It's So Good (To Be Home With You)", "Saving My Love For You", and "I Can't Bump" (parts 1 & 2). Earth, Wind & Fire's first album – recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Classic work from female disco trio Eastbound Expressway – an Ian Levine project done in a mode to rival the great female club trios from Philly – and one that comes off surprisingly well! The work was recorded in UK, but has a style that reminds us a bit of some of the Canadian disco of the time – with long instrumental passages leading into the tunes, nice acoustic percussion bits breaking out in the mix, and vocals that are sort of filtered into the tunes as they roll on – maybe not the best credit to the Eastbound sound vocally, but still a nice way to lay things out! Deep deep soul from Lorraine Ellison – a record that already shows quite a bit of growth from her earlier Warner Brothers recordings – and a new sense of hipness as well! There's definitely an influence here of the sound of Stax and Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s – all focused through the excellent production and songwriting of Jerry Ragovoy, who's a key influence on the record – and who really helps make it one of Lorraine's greatest moments ever! If you've ever wanted to dig Lorraine Ellison, this is definitely the place to start – as it's an album we'd easily stack next to the best from any of our favorite female deep soul singers. A great little album from The Emotions – largely because it sounds a lot like prime mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire, with female vocals added over the top – ultimately, pulling away with a soulful charm all its own! Maurice White produced the whole set, and it's got a soaring spacey sound that provides a perfect spiritual edge to the girls vocals – taking them way past the hits, into much more sophisticated soul territory. There's a beautifully righteous vibe going on throughout – a sound that's almost like Minnie Riperton at her 70s Capitol best – and titles include "Love Vibes", "Walking The Line", "Time Is Passing By", "I Wouldn't Lie", "Smile", and "Spirit Of Summer". A stunner of a record from the Fania All Stars – a tremendous attempt to move into a 70s soul vein, complete with Satin Soul arrangements from Gene and Billy Page! The record bubbles over with the funky orchestrations you'd expect from the best Barry White work at the time – strings soaring over snapping beats and warmly soulful instrumentation – bearing little resemblance overall to the earlier work of the Fania All Stars, but blowing our minds all the more because of the rich ability to change sound so much. There's load of wonderful funk tracks on the album – and titles include "Picadillo", "I'll See You Again", "Foofer Soofer", "Sabrosa", "Desafio", and a great cover of "Rosemary's Baby". A fresh new groove from The Fania All Stars – one that definitely has them picking up some of the Spanish elements mentioned in the title – the fusing them into the tight mix of Latin, club, and jazz they were doing at Columbia Records in the late 70s! These new elements are often light – a bit of acoustic guitar here, maracas there, or some slightly different rhythms – and they're warmed up nicely by the mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation used by the group – who are definitely at the height of their disco powers here! Core players include Papo Lucca on keyboards, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Johnny Pacheco and Roberto Roena on percussion, and Bobby Valentin on bass – and other players include Hubert Laws on flute, Eric Gale on guitar, Luie Ramirez on vibes, and Luiz Perico Ortiz on trumpet. The late 60s comeback album for the Fireballs and vocalist Jimmy Gilmer – a record that found the driving early rock rhythms fitting in very well with the light sunshine and psychedelic pop of the late 60s! The sound on this record has little in common with the early rock instrumentals that the Fireballs made their name burning through. This set is more of a catchy jangly sunshine rock record, with the tight Fireball rhythm section, plus some Stax-influenced horns, easy garage organ and keys, and groovy vocals by Gilmer. A great tune from First Choice – a bit slower than some of their other disco hits, with a building soulful quality that's really great, and which includes a strong hook in the title phrase, one that really makes the song bubble! Very groovy work from 5000 Volts – one of the first pop disco groups to come onto the 70s scene in the UK – and a quartet with the lovely Tina Charles in the lead! The style here is a bit like Charles' solo work – but more funky overall, and more electrified too – with plenty of Euro disco styles that remind us of the best work from Munich, yet still produced with some of that cool British production that bigger chart stars were getting at the time. The style is occasionally cheesy, but in a good way – and titles include "I'm On Fire", "Look Out I'm Coming", "The Late Late Show", "Thunderfire", "By Love", "One Stop Baby", and "Light The Flame Of Love". Great small combo work by Roberta Flack, recorded early in her career, when she was still one of the hippest things around – and it's among her best records! Roberta's really come into her own as vocalist at this point and solidifying here personal style – with that clear tone and perfectly controlled style and phrasing – balancing a jazzy sensibility with the emotions of her gospel roots. A few tracks have some large arrangements by Arif Mardin, William Eaton, or Deodato – but most tracks feature a core group of studio jazz players that includes players like Joe Farrell, Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey, Hubert Laws, and Bernard Purdie. Great work by The Heath Brothers – a lot slicker and smoother than their earlier album for Strata East, but still filled with a soulful jazzy approach that befits their rich talents! By the point of this set, Jimmy Heath, once a rougher talent on the tenor, had emerged as one of the smooth soul maestros on the instrument – ranking next to Grover Washington Jr and Stanley Turrentine for a mellifluous sound and well-timed approach to the solo. Heath's written some great tracks here that are underpinned nicely by brother Percy's strong work on bass – still acoustic amidst some added electric instrumentation on some of the tracks. "Spread Love" has a full burning spiritual sort of groove – with a long intro that keeps on coming, and some great moogy bits that soar towards the heavens with the strings before the vocals come into play! The driving funky groove of "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" was one of the best things about the film The Mack – and the cut's been a classic for years with just about everyone, from funk fans, to hip hoppers, to early house folks, who played the track like mad! Maybe one of the greatest albums to come from the Montreal club scene of the late 70s – a set that revels in the no-holds-barred approach that usually had Canadian disco records stretching out with really long tracks, and plenty of great instrumentation in the mix! This set's a monster of live percussion and electric elements – fast-snapping drums, congas, and bongos – mixed with great keyboards, riffing guitar, and some nice moogy moments too – all with just a touch of vocals from time to time, but mostly a very key focus on the instrumental interplay! Gone are the rough-hewn rhymes of the group's first album, and in their place are better arranged, more thought-out tracks that mix in a wealth of musical influences – and which expand the group's verbal expression past simple protests, and into the realm of Jazzoetry that became their trademark during the mid 70s.
