✨✧ Arthur PrysockPortrait Of Arthur Prysock (Verve) ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius! It's hard to go wrong with Arthur Prysock in the 60s – and an album like this is key proof of why he was one of the best male singers of his generation – even if nobody seems to remember that now! There's a mix of darkness in with the bold, adult, masculine approach here – a wonderful blend that really keeps things on edge. (Vocalists, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. Used ... $8.99
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". ✨✧ Elvis Costello & Allen ToussaintRiver In Reverse ... CD
Verve, 2006. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A graceful collaboration between the ever-eclectic Elvis Costello and New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint – with Elvis's current backing group The Imposters providing a tight rhythmic backdrop that's punctuated by the Crescent City Horns! Toussaint's work as a producer/arranger/ace songwriter needs no introduction, and he and Costello & co. run through many great tracks from Toussaint's songbook in a sometimes mellow soul feel, and sometimes with some light Crescent City funk. Toussaint & Costello co-penned a number of new tracks for the set – mostly with an uplifting gospel soul inflection that's very nice! Tracks include "On Your Way Down", "Nearer To You", "Tears, Tears And More Tears", "The Sharpest Thorn", "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?", "The River In Reverse", "Freedom For The Stallion", "Ascension Day", "All These Things", "Wonder Woman" and more. Richie HavensSomething Else Again ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
The genius of Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches that would bog down some of Richie's later work. There's an earnestness to this music that's also touched with a good degree of worldly sense – a notion that the world was changing, but one person at a time, and mostly through the gentle efforts and honest efforts of souls like Richie. Laura NyroLaura Nyro (aka First Songs) ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Laura Nyro's first album ever – and even at this early point, Nyro sounds wonderful – a fair bit more soulful than most other female pop singers of her time – with a fully-fleshed out approach to the vocals that's mature and sensitive, and almost a bit more confident at times than in later years. Arrangements are by Herb Bernstein, and almost have the same sort of sunny feel as The 5th Dimension in their famous covers of Nyro's tunes – again with more soul than we might have expected for the time. Titles include "Lazy Susan", "Stoney End", "Hands Off The Man (Flim Flam Man)", "Buy & Sell", "He's A Runner", "Billy's Blues", and "Wedding Bell Blues". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1965. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Although Irene Reid later went on to make some recordings that had her in a more rootsy setting, this nice set from the mid 60's features her deep soul voice amidst classy jazz-based arrangements by Oliver Nelson. The record's got the feel of one of Nancy Wilson's classics for Capitol, with a mix of standards and pop material like "When Did You Leave Heaven", "Save Your Love For Me", "Who Can I Turn To", and "They All Say I'm The Biggest Fool". Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... LP
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. Lyrics are in French and English, and titles include "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive", "They Took My Hand", "Stop", "Liberian Calypso", "Vous Etes SEuls Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous", "Fodder In Her Wings", "Thandewye", "Heaven Belongs To You", and "Le Peuple En Suisse". ✨✧ Willie BoboJuicy ... LP
Verve, 1967. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard soulful Latin from the great Willie Bobo! The record's an extremely tasty blend of cuts that mix hard Latin grooving with a swinging 60s pop feel – all filtered through the crossover genius of late 60s Verve. There's lots of great boogaloo groovers, shing-a-ling rhythms, and a tight no-nonsense approach to percussion – classic all the way! Titles include "Shing-a-Ling Baby", "Felicidad","Mating Call", "Roots", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy","La Descarga Del Bobo", "Juicy", "Roots", and "Music To Watch Girls By". CD includes 4 bonus alternate takes of album tracks, including of the title cut, "Music To Watch Girls By", "Dis-Advantages" and "Shing-A-Ling Baby". (Latin, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ RampCome Into Knowledge ... LP
Blue Thumb/Verve, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums of all time – a masterpiece of moody soul, spacey vocals, and jazzy vibes – all produced by the legendary Roy Ayers! Ramp take their name from the anagram Roy Ayers Musical Productions – and in a way, the group's the summation of all the genius that Roy had been cooking up on his own albums of the 70s – served up at an even higher level than before! The group boasts a unique two-female vocal style – sung together in a mode that had been used on Roy's own albums, but never this fully – all supported by some complex jazzy instrumentation, very heavy on the vibes and keyboards! Nearly every cut is fantastic – and the album has a strange off-kilter vibe that's totally amazing, and which has captivated soul fans for years – a blend of mellow and upbeat, complicated and straightforward that's totally great. Titles include the massive cut "Daylight", sampled famously over the years, plus "American Promise", "Come Into Knowledge", "I Just Love You", and the band's great cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", done in a way that's strangely both similar and different than Roy's own version! ✨✧ Quincy JonesYou've Got It Bad Girl ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky Q for the 70s – easily one of the coolest albums ever from Quincy Jones! The album's got a very heavy electric vibe – one that's kind of a laidback take on the styles that Jones was forging in some of his 70s soundtrack work – served up with massive work on the keyboards from Dave Grusin and Bob James, the latter of whom brings some of his own CTI vibe strongly into play! The basslines are great too – often dipping, stepping, and turning wonderfully – keeping things laidback and mellow, but always making for some sort of a groove, even on the slower tracks too. There's just a bit of vocals on the record – handled by Valerie Simpson on two tracks, and Quincy on another – but the main focus here is on the instrumentation, which is completely sublime. Titles include Quincy's great remake of "Summer In The City", an oft-sought sample track – plus versions of "Superstition", "Daydreaming", and "You've Got It Bad Girl" – and the great originals "Chump Change", "Love Theme From The Getaway", "Eyes Of Love", and "Sanford & Son Theme". ✨✧ Quincy JonesSmackwater Jack ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever! Quincy's really stepping out here from the straighter and spacier styles of earlier records – going for more of the dirty grooves he was cutting up for soundtrack albums, and hitting notes that were a lot more fitting for the blacksploitation era. The record includes the massive funky track cut "Hikky-Burr", which was the theme to the first Bill Cosby Show, and which has a sinister groove, and some wild shouted lyrics! Also features two more great themes – "Ironside" and "The Anderson Tapes" – both of which have a cool electric sound to them, and the nice title cut, which actually features Quincy on vocals! Other tracks include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "What's Going On", "Brown Ballad" and more. (Jazz, Soul) CD

Rose MurphyI Can't Give You Anything But Chee Chee ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
A great range of work from Rose Murphy – one of the most unique talents of her generation, and an artist with a style that's really unlike anyone else we can think of! At one level, Murphy's a great pianist – ala Hadda Brooks – but she's also got a high range of singing, with vocals that are more in the light upper reaches hit by Blossom Dearie – which makes for quite a contrast to her work on the keys! Then there's also her very rhythmic way of singing, which often has some playful inflections – most notably the use of the "chee chee" or "chi chi" phrase, which comes through on a fair bit of the tunes here. The package is the first strong career overview we've ever seen of Murphy's music – and includes tracks recorded for the RCA, Majestic, Mercury, Verve, and Decca labels – with 28 tracks that include "By The Waters Of Minnetonka", "You Were Meant For Me", "Time On My Hands", "Ceceila", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Rose Of The Rio Grande", "Mm Mm Good", "Busy Line", "A Little Bird Told Me", and "The Little Red Monkey". ✨✧ Howard TateGet It While You Can – The Legendary Sessions ... CD
Mercury, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Howard Tate is one of the most overlooked soul singers of the late 60's – or at least he was, until finally getting his due in recent years! Howard's got an incredible vocal style that ranks him right up there with the best deep soul singers of his time – and a heartbreaking way of delivering a vocal that's completely sublime. His lack of recognition at the time might have had something to do with the fact that although Tate recorded for Verve, the company was mostly a jazz label – and didn't really push its soul catalog that strongly. But don't let the label fool you, because this is prime soul material – on a par with the best from Stax or Atlantic at the time – with Jerry Ragovoy doing the production, and Howard singing a great mix of hard soul and smoother uptown sounds. The CD features 17 tracks in all – titles include "Part Time Love", "Night Owl", "Give Me Some Courage", "Sweet Love Child", "How Blue Can You Get", "Half A Man", "Get It While You Can", "Stop", "Glad I Knew Better", and "Look At Granny Run Run". ✨✧ Roy AyersLifeline (plus bonus track) ... CD
Polydor, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". CD also features a bonus track – the 12-inch version of "Running Away"! CD

✨✧ Stanley ClarkeChildren Of Forever ... CD
Polydor, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the hippest album that Stanley Clarke ever cut – a stretched-out soulful batch of jazz-tinged tracks – very much in the same spirit as the more righteous soul jazz underground of the time! In a way, the record would be much more at home on a label like Strata East than it would at Polydor – thanks to vocals from Andy Bey and Dee Dee Bridgewater – and a group lineup that includes Pat Martino on guitars, Art Webb on flute, Lenny White on drums, and Chick Corea on keyboards! Corea produced, and there's a bit of the free-floating style of Return To Forever here – but the overall vibe is a lot more soulful too, and reminds us a fair bit of some of the earliest work by Norman Connors or Carlos Garnett – both of whom used Bridgewater as a vocalist in similar settings. Titles include "Children Of Forever", "Butterfly Dreams", "Sea Journey", and "Unexpected Days". (Jazz, Soul) CD
(Verve Originals pressing.)
