✨✧ Nina SimoneSinnerman (Felix Da Housecat's Heavenly House ext voc, inst, & main, original) – Verve Remixed 2 ... 12-inch
Verve, 2003. Near Mint- ... $49.99
Nina Simone hits a house groove – thanks to some tight remixing by Felix Da Housecat! "Sinnerman" first appeared on Nina's classic Pastel Blues album – but here, it's pumped up in a few different mixes that were all part of the Verve Remixed 2 project. The vocals are extremely haunting – really echoing out with that magic tone that Nina always had – and even all the beats and keys can't get in the way of the tune's soulful finish! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a plain white sleeve.)

Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Terry CallierWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Cadet/Verve, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. Other tracks include "I'd Rather Be With You", "Just As Long As We're In Love", and "You Don't Care" – and the whole album's a masterpiece beyond compare! LP, Vinyl record album

Richie HavensMixed Bag ... LP
Verve, 1967. Sealed ... $14.99
The genius of Richie Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches that would bog down some of Richie's later work. There's an earnestness to this music that's also touched with a good degree of worldly sense – a notion that the world was changing, but one person at a time, and mostly through the gentle efforts and honest efforts of souls like Richie. This LP features 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "High Flyin' Bird", "San Francisco Bay Blues", "Just Like A Woman", "Sandy", "Three Day Eternity", "Follow", and "Handsome Johny". A great little set of Hugh's MGM recordings – and one that features a nice mix of pop instrumental tracks, and others that have a more sophisticated African Soul sound. Included in this bunch are "Bajabula Bonke (Healing Song) parts 1 & 2", "U-Dwi", "Masquenada (parts 1 & 2)", "Dzinorabiro (parts 1 & 2)", and "Myxolydia (parts 1 & 2)". Laura NyroLaura Nyro (aka First Songs) ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Laura Nyro's first album ever – and even at this early point, Nyro sounds wonderful – a fair bit more soulful than most other female pop singers of her time – with a fully-fleshed out approach to the vocals that's mature and sensitive, and almost a bit more confident at times than in later years. Arrangements are by Herb Bernstein, and almost have the same sort of sunny feel as The 5th Dimension in their famous covers of Nyro's tunes – again with more soul than we might have expected for the time. Titles include "Lazy Susan", "Stoney End", "Hands Off The Man (Flim Flam Man)", "Buy & Sell", "He's A Runner", "Billy's Blues", and "Wedding Bell Blues". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Marlena ShawIt Is Love ... LP
Verve, 1987. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Strange album for Marlena – recorded after her soul albums, and done in a live setting with a small group (Buddy Montgomery, Larry Ball, and Paul Humphrey). Marlena's ostensibly trying to get back to her jazz roots (as was Dee Dee Bridgewater around the same time), and she kind of does, given the song list (mostly standards), but the sound you'd expect still isn't there, despite her best efforts. Titles include "Go Away Little Boy", "On The Street Where You Live", "Unforgettable", and "Day In Day Out". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willie BoboFeelin' So Good ... LP
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the Verve albums that focuses on Willie Bobo's talents as a singer – still very much in the tight Latin Soul style of Willie's other work from the time, but with more vocals on the tracks – done in Willie's rough-styled soulful mode! Includes the groovers "Feelin' So Good" and "Sock It To Me", plus "Lil Red Riding Hood", "Sunshine Superman", "Call Me", "Dichoso", and "Sunny". Very nice pop Latin soul groove! ✨✧ Quincy JonesYou've Got It Bad Girl ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet funky Q for the 70s – easily one of the coolest albums ever from Quincy Jones! The album's got a very heavy electric vibe – one that's kind of a laidback take on the styles that Jones was forging in some of his 70s soundtrack work – served up with massive work on the keyboards from Dave Grusin and Bob James, the latter of whom brings some of his own CTI vibe strongly into play! The basslines are great too – often dipping, stepping, and turning wonderfully – keeping things laidback and mellow, but always making for some sort of a groove, even on the slower tracks too. There's just a bit of vocals on the record – handled by Valerie Simpson on two tracks, and Quincy on another – but the main focus here is on the instrumentation, which is completely sublime. Titles include Quincy's great remake of "Summer In The City", an oft-sought sample track – plus versions of "Superstition", "Daydreaming", and "You've Got It Bad Girl" – and the great originals "Chump Change", "Love Theme From The Getaway", "Eyes Of Love", and "Sanford & Son Theme". ✨✧ RampCome Into Knowledge ... LP
Blue Thumb/Verve, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums of all time – a masterpiece of moody soul, spacey vocals, and jazzy vibes – all produced by the legendary Roy Ayers! Ramp take their name from the anagram Roy Ayers Musical Productions – and in a way, the group's the summation of all the genius that Roy had been cooking up on his own albums of the 70s – served up at an even higher level than before! The group boasts a unique two-female vocal style – sung together in a mode that had been used on Roy's own albums, but never this fully – all supported by some complex jazzy instrumentation, very heavy on the vibes and keyboards! Nearly every cut is fantastic – and the album has a strange off-kilter vibe that's totally amazing, and which has captivated soul fans for years – a blend of mellow and upbeat, complicated and straightforward that's totally great. Titles include the massive cut "Daylight", sampled famously over the years, plus "American Promise", "Come Into Knowledge", "I Just Love You", and the band's great cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", done in a way that's strangely both similar and different than Roy's own version! Sil AustinSil Austin Plays Pretty For The People ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $1.99
No honking here, as Sil Austin takes his deeply soulful tenor sax, and turns it to a set of creamy late-nite tracks – all done over some very "pretty" backings, ala the Verve strings work of Ben Webster or Lester Young. Most cuts have voices in with the orchestrations – and titles include "I'll Walk Alone", "Call me", "Ruby", "My Mother's Eyes", "Stardust", "Prisoner Of Love", and "Sweet Slumber". Bobby CallenderRainbow ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good ... $29.99
A weird one. The album's sort of a trippy mix of psychedlia, soul, and jazziness – with production by Alan Lorber in a similar style to other projects of his from the same time (like the Lotus Palace album on Verve.) Bobby Callender sings in a style that's infused with a sense of knowledge and righteousness, but which is also a bit more devoid of soul than you'd expect from the cool cover of the album. Still, he's got some nice musicians backing him up, and a blend of instruments that includes organ, funky drums, and even sitar – so the overall sound's pretty cool. Titles include "Rainbow", "Symphonic Pictures", "A Man", "Mother Superior", and "Purple". LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM promo copy. Cover has some patches of peeled paper, and light staining along the bottom seam from moisture. Also has a "DJ" sticker on the front. Includes original insert.)

Terry CallierCollected Terry Callier ... CD
Spectrum (UK), Early 70s/1999. New Copy ... $8.99
Two slices of work from Terry Callier – a collection that's mostly made up of his sublime early 70s recordings for Chess – but which also features a few tracks from his 1999 comeback for Verve! The Chess recordings are the stuff of legend – a unique blend of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring, spacious arrangements of the great Charles Stepney! Callier's vocals and guitar work have gone onto influence generations for years – and this collection features most of the tracks that helped make his mark back in the day. Titles include "Dancing Girl", "Ordinary Joe", "What Color Is Love", "Trance On Sedgewick Street", "I'd Rather Be With You", "Satin Doll", "I Don't Want Nobody Else", "Brown-Eyed Lady", "I'd Rather Be With You", "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Sunset Boulevard", and "Love Can Do". Slim GaillardSlim Gaillard Rides Again! ... LP
Dot, 1959. Very Good ... $11.99
Some of the best material Slim Gaillard ever recorded! Although he's best known for his Verve work, and for his early 40s sessions in LA – these 1959 recordings for Dot have Slim hitting a groove that's far tighter than usual, with a better jazz influence, and a much freer approach to singing than his usual stock style. There's a wonderful version of "How High The Moon" that's got crazy guitar, and wild lyrics from Slim about life on the moon. Other nice cuts include "Sukiyaka Cha Cha", "Chicken Rhythm", "Slim's Cee", "Lady Be Good", and "Thunderbird". If you've ever wondered why people think Slim is so great, check this one out – and you'll flip! (Vocalists, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
