Smokey RobinsonQuiet Storm ... CD
Tamla, 1975. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Incredible work – a record that should be in every household! Smokey breaks free of the group sound of the Miracles albums – hitting a whole new mode, and inventing the "Quiet Storm" radio format along the way! The title cut – "Quiet Storm" – is a majestic long-building track that's as important to mellow soul as Larry Mizell's work was to jazz funk at the same time, and it's got a similar layering effect that has sounds building and spinning, with a bit of sound effects, great keyboards, and cool moogy touches that recall some of Bobbi Humphrey's best work for Blue Note, but filtered through a mellow ballad style. The whole album's great, and other tracks include "Baby That's Backatcha", "The Agony & The Ecstasy", "Coincidentally", and "Wedding Song". Proof that Motown was still great in the 70s! CD

Aretha FranklinARETHA (4CD set) ... CD
Atlantic, Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 4CD ... $55.99 59.99
A really fantastic career-spanning collection of work from Aretha Franklin – the first we've ever seen to start with her earliest years, then follow the greatness of her voice and spirit as it blossomed strongly over the decades! Sure, most folks know Franklin's classic work on Atlantic – but this package features earlier sides for Chess and Columbia, later work from Arista – and a whole host of rare and unreleased material – plus special tracks from side projects that worked together to form a crucial part of Aretha's legacy over the years! This 4CD package is beautiful – a book-style cover, with loads of vintage and rare photos, essays on Aretha by David Nathan and Rochelle Riley, and track-by track notes on the 81 tracks included in the lavish set. In addition to the rare tracks, there's some other great surprises here – and titles include "Until You Come Back To Me (work tape)", "Chain Of Fools (alt version)", "Rock Steady (alternate mix)", "Call Me (alt version)", "How I Got Over (live single edit)", "Chain Of Fools (alt)", "My Kind Of Town (Detroit Is) (demo)", "Try A Little Tenderness (demo)", "Oh Baby (demo)", "Til It's Over (demo)", "Angel (work tape)", "Somewhere (alt version)", "Mr DJ", "Ooo Baby Baby (with Smokey Robinson)", "Share Your Love With Me (live)", "Spanish Harlem (alt mix)", "Bridge Over Troubled Water (long version)", "Young Gifted & Black (alt long version)", "It's Not Unusual/See Saw (with Tom Jones)", "You're All I Need To Get By (work tape)", "Don't Play That Song (live)", "Spirit In The Dark (live reprise with Ray Charles)", "Oh Happy Day (with Mavis Staples)", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "A Rose Is Still A Rose", "Master Of Eyes", "A Change Is Gonna Come (mono)", "One Step Ahead", "Never Grow Old", "Today I Sing The Blues", "You Light Up My Life (unissued)", "Think", "I Knew You Were Waiting (with George Michael)", "Respect", and her version of "Natural Woman" from the 2015 Kennedy Honors ceremony. VariousComplete Motown Singles Volume 10 – 1970 (limited edition 6CD set) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1970. Used 6 CDs ... $149.99
Motown leaps boldly into the 70s – building strongly off the changing grooves during the label's late 60s years, and serving up an amazing array of differently-styled singles! There's a really great blend here of some of the more familiar 60s modes and the hipper grooves to come in the new decade – a sound that's definitely maturing Motown, but still with most of the label's big talent in place, alongside some key younger acts and a few great surprises from left field! As with other volumes in this amazing series, there's a hell of a lot of music here – not just hits, but every single from the year, presented with both a and b-sides – so that you really get an idea of what the label was up to at the time. The whole thing's packaged in a hardcover book-style package, with a bonus 45 in the front cover – and it includes over 150 tracks by artists who include Hearts Of Stone, Hugh Masekela, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Allan Nichols, The Originals, Rare Earth, The Jazz Crusaders, Diana Ross, Arthur Adams, Jimmy Ruffin, Yvonne Fair, Gladys Knight, Bob & Marcia, Buzzie, Blinky, The Jackson 5, Danny Hernandez, Ivy Jo, The Fantastic Four, R Dean Taylor, Chuck Jackson, and lots more!
