Patti LabelleBel Hommage ... CD
GPE, 2017. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great little jazz album from Patti Labelle – and that's right, we did say "jazz" and not soul – as the whole thing's got a wonderful old school style that really suits the singer's voice perfectly! There's a classic presentation to the record, but also one that's never trapped in cliched gimmicks – as the live jazz backing seems to unlock more spontaneity in Patti's vocals than we remember hearing in recent decades – as she takes each song and gives it a wonderful personal performance. The lady also mixes in some deeper bluesy currents to her phrasing, in a way you'd never expect from her 70s albums – and titles include "Jazz In You", "Moanin", "Moody's Mood", "Softly As I Leave You", "Peel Me A Grape", "I Can Cook", "Folks Who Live On The Hill", "Song For Old Lovers", and "Go To Hell". Patti LabelleI'm In Love Again ... CD
Philadelphia International/Right Stuff, 1983. Used ... $7.99
A seminal album from the great Patti Labelle – a set that allowed the singer to mature strongly and find her own voice away from the funky, rockish style of Labelle – this sophisticated style that marked a whole new level of the singer's career! The Philly International label turned out to be a perfect setting for Patti – as they too were also growing past some of their earlier styles – moving past the chart soul of the 70s, and some of their bigger disco hits – and finding just the right place to allow their artists to keep on growing strongly over the years. The album's an all-adult affair – no clunky commercial moments at all, and instead this great blend of jazzy currents and sophisticated soul – all handled with the excellent second generation Philly International approach! Titles include "I'm In Love Again", "Love Lives", "Love Need & Want You", "I'll Never Never Give You Up", "If Only You Knew", "Body Language", and "When Am I Gonna Find True Love". CD

✨✧ Patti LabelleMiss Patti's Christmas ... CD
Def Soul, 2007. Used ... $3.99
It's Miss Patti's Christmas, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are along for the ride to make sure things come out right! But unlike in the old days, the newly-reinvented Jam/Lewis team has a great ear for subtlety here – and they help keep the album in just the right spot – unique enough to really stand out on its own, and not just be some simple rehash of Christmas favorites – but also balanced enough so that it's never too over the top or gimmicky. In a way, Patti Labelle might well be at her most mature in this setting – hitting the mellower tunes with a nice sort of sophistication – and picking up on the groovers with an equally solid feel. Titles include "Holidays Mean More To Me", "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas", "Christmas Jam", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "Nativity", "It's Going To Be A Merry Christmas", "Every Year Every Christmas", and "Away In A Manger". Philadelphia International, 1981. Sealed ... $3.99
Smooth early 80s work from Patti – a bit over the top at times, but nicely restrained at others. Despite the fact that Patti's in the hands of top Philly International talents like Gamble & Huff, and Dexter Wansel – the effort's still very much her own, in full diva mode over a range of styles, from uptempo to mellow. Titles include "Family", "Boats Against The Current", "Shoot Him On Sight", "Over The Rainbow", "The Spirit's In It", and "I Fell In Love Without A Warning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patti LabelleIt's Alright With Me ... LP
Epic, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late 70s gem from Patti Labelle! Although the album's recorded right in the height of the disco years, Patti's really shining on the mellower cuts – hitting a serious soulful side that shows that her move to a solo act really let her move into more sophisticated material. There are definitely some dance tracks like "Music Is My Life" but the real highlights are mellow tunes like "What'cha Doing To Me" and "You & Me". Other titles include "It's Alright With Me", "Love & Learn", "My Best Was Good Enough", and "Deliver The Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patti LaBelle & The BluebellesOver The Rainbow – The Atlantic Years ... CD
Atlantic/Ichiban, Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very early work by Patti LaBelle – working here with the young Bluebelles group, but in a setting that still points the way towards the Labelle sound of the 70s – given that the quartet also features vocals from Cindy Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx! The style is a great mix of female doo wop and uptown soul – harmony styles really maturing strongly for the 60s, and already taking strong advantage of the amazing vocals of Patti LaBelle! Things are sweet, but have a nice edge too – and even the familiar tunes take on a new life in the hands of the group – as you'll hear on "Over The Rainbow", "People", "More", "Groovy Kind Of Love", "He", "Patti's Prayer", and "Unchained Melody". There's a total of 22 cuts in all, with a lot of material from rare singles. CD

Relic, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Christmas Soul from the great Patti Labelle – a CD that brings together her first full Christmas album, plus a number of bonus singles – making for a nicely stuffed 16 track collection! These early 60s sides have a sweet, warm, innocent sound that's completely wonderful – a soulful girl group take on the sound of the season, handled with instrumentation that's light and playful, yet never too kitschy to get in the way of the group's soulful vocals. Patti sounds wonderful on these tunes, with a quality that reminds us a bit of Barbara Mason in her earlier years – and titles include "White Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve", "The First Noel", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Silent Night", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Auld Lang Syne", and "Little Town Of Bethlehem". LabelleNightbirds ... LP
Epic, 1974. Very Good ... $4.99
A 70s crossover classic, and the album the put LaBelle over the top! The mighty Allen Toussaint is at the helm for this first Epic album to feature the trio of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – and he really helps the group find an amazing new sound after their somewhat rougher, rootsier efforts for Warner Brothers! The new groove has plenty of Toussaint's New Orleans rhythms in the mix – but the overall sound is a bit smoother too – kind of a classy, clubby take on the Crescent City sound – one that still sounds wonderful after all these years. Most tunes have a vamping rhythm and lots of great electric piano – and titles include the massive hit "Lady Marmalade", the great title track "Nightbirds" – and "Space Children", "All Girl Band", "You Turn Me On", "What Can I Do For You?", and "It Took A Long Time". Epic, 1975. Very Good+ ... $3.99
A sweet 70s set that has the trio of Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash teaming up with New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint – who brings the group some of the chunkier grooves he'd been using in his own great 70s work! The album's got a nicely romping sound throughout – a surprisingly good fit for the rockish soul of the girls – and the heavier use of guitar works really well with some of Toussaint's funky undercurrents – much more so than we'd think in a straighter setting. Titles include "Far As We Felt Like Goin'", "Slow Burn", "Cosmic Dancer", "Black Holes In The Sky", and "Messin' With My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

LabellePressure Cookin' ... CD
RCA/Reel Music, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 15.99
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the slightly less-formed modes of their Warner Brothers years – finding a really badass sort of territory that would serve them well for the rest of the 70s! The shift really pays off – as there's a number of good funky numbers on the album – and some righteous political lyricism in the mix, too – but also some mellower moments that really round things out nicely. The trio riff on a version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", as led into by the cut "Something In The Air" – and other numbers include "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", "Mr. Music Man", "Goin' On a Holiday", "Open Up Your Heart", "Let Me See You In The Light", and "Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood". ✨✧ LaBelleLaBelle ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three tremendous singers all working together at a level that really sets the standard for bad-rapping female soul in the 70s! We're not sure what happened with Patti and the group between their 60s material and this set – but whatever it was, it was something great – a turn towards a style that would keep them in the record racks for years! Titles include "Too Many Days", "Running Out Of Fools", "When The Sun Comes Shining Through", "Heart Be Still", and a nice version of "Time & Love". CD

✨✧ LaBelleMoon Shadow ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever by Labelle – known especially for the massive funky title cut, which has been an in-demand groover for years! "Moonshadow" begins with a nice funky piano intro, then rolls into a 10 minute groove that's really tasty – filled with lots of jazzy riffing, tasty conga, and a weird monologue by Patti that runs through different parts of the body and why you should appreciate them! The cut was lost on American audiences of the 70s, but became a huge one in the European jazz dance scene of the late 80s, probably because most of them couldn't understand how silly Patti's vocals were! The cut's nice and funky, though – and there's some other nice ones on the record, too, including "Sunday News", "Touch Me All Over", and "Peace With Yourself". Much more interesting than most of their stuff, with a hip mixture of jazz, soul, and hard grooving! CD

ChantelsChantels ... LP
End, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $5.99 7.99
One of the greatest girl groups of the fifties – and one of the few who could sing with the same sort of depth as the best male lineups of the time! The Chantels really know how to hit on all burners when they get going – which they do here – and their work of the time is hardly a precursor for bubble gum pop of the 60s, and should more be seen as the start of a tradition that would include later groups like Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles, or The Sweet Inspirations. The whole thing's great – and although production has a bit of echo and electric bass, the sound is nice and raw, and hardly pop at all – and in the best End Records tradition, the vocals stay center stage throughout. Titles include "Maybe", "The Pleae", "Whoever You Are", "Every Night", "If You Try", "Sure Of Love", "Whoever You Are", "He's Gone", and "Congratulations". LP, Vinyl record album

Marlena ShawTake A Bite ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A nice little album that continues Marlena's 70s experiments in updating her jazzy vocal style to a sweet modern soul groove. As always, Marlena shows that she can handle a wide range of styles – from uptempo dancefloor material to more tender ballads, sparkling in a way that few other singers of her time could manage. Arrangements are by Bobby Bryant and Harold Wheeler – and the album's got a full-on approach that's a bit like some of Patti Labelle's work from the time. Titles include "Touch Me In the Morning", "I'll Be Your Friend", "Haven't We Been In Love Before?", and a strange reading of "It Was A Very Good Year". LP, Vinyl record album

Grover Washington JrIn The Name Of Love – The Elektra Years 1979 to 1984 (Paradise/Winelight/Come Morning/Best Is Yet To Come/Inside Moves/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CD ... $36.99 51.99
A great run of music from Grover Washington Jr – five full albums, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Paradise – one of those records you see so much it's easy to forget how great it is! Grover's a real genius with the sax on this record – taking a "less is more" cue from Stanley Turrentine's 70s work, and toning down his playing to an even tighter style than on the Kudu albums of earlier years, to a level of ultimate economy that really leaves us breathless. Grover hits a rarified level here that we'd only reserve for a small few – like Steely Dan or The Crusaders, both groups who teeter on the same brink, and make it work perfectly. Titles include "Asia's Theme", "Tell Me About It Now", "Feel It Comin", "Icey", and "The Answer In Your Eyes". Winelight is a smooth smooth classic from Grover Washington Jr – a set that has a classy image on the cover, and a classic groove within – a completely sublime blend of jazz, soul, and funk, all given the sort of masterful finish that you might have found on the best records by The Crusaders at the time! The difference, though, is that Washington's the lead soloist throughout – crafting some especially nice lines on his trademark soprano sax – which he used in ways that made him one of the most important mainstream jazz artists of his time – and one of the few to really open the doors of the music to folks who might not have been listening otherwise. Grover's sense of space and timing is wonderful throughout – and titles include the classic debut with Bill Withers on "Just The Two Of Us" –plus "Winelight", "Let It Flow", "In The Name Of Love", "Take Me There", and "Make Me A Memory (Sad Samba)". On Come Morning, Grover Washington blows over some great arrangements from William Eaton – full, but lean too – and with the same sort of slinky groove that always worked best for Grover back at Kudu Records! The sound is tight, but never too slick – that magically soulful approach that always made Grover a real standout from his contemporaries – one of the few cats who could smooth out jazz without ever losing its soul – thanks to lots of well-crafted lead lines on soprano sax! Titles include "East River Drive", "Jamming", "Little Black Samba", "Be Mine", and "Reaching Out". Best Is Yet To Come is a set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about to envelop his contemporaries! Part of the strength of the record lies in Grover's strongly soul-based sense of timing – allowing for just the right amount of space between the notes to remind you that you're listening to a jazz soloist first and foremost, even when a guest like Patti Labelle might step in for a bit of vocals. Titles include "Brazilian Memories", "Mixty Motions", "Can You Dig It", "I'll Be With You", "Things Are Getting Better", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". Inside Moves has Washington soaring to the skies on soprano sax – as expressive a voice on the record as any soul singer might be – and maybe even more so on the few spots that do include vocals. Jon Lucien sings a bit on the record – and if you read these pages, you know how much we love him – but Grover's still the giant here, with a sense of timing and phrasing that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match in a setting like this. Titles include "Jet Stream", "Sassy Stew", "Dawn Song", "Inside Moves", "Watching You Watching Me", and "Secret Stew". 5CD set features 19 more bonus tracks – all the single edits of songs from the albums! There's a new sort of sophistication to Bobby's music – never too smooth, especially on his vocals, which retain their original raspy charm – but a different vibe than the 70s, but one that's still very different than most mainstream soul of the time!
