2 tracks lifted from the Disco Juice 2 compilation – both from the P&P Records catalog! "25 Hours" is a pretty fantastic club track – starts slow with spaced out beats, then picks up the pace with strange guitar bits, soulful vocals, and gives way to a honking sax solo in the middle! The "re-edit" focuses on the tenor part, and strips the rhythm track down so you get even more of that great guitar work! "Super Jay Love Theme" is a slower number – with a beat that's almost in the rollerskating mode, punctuated by some conga parts, a slapping rhythm, and some really spaced out moogy P&P touches! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". A very soulful little group from the Nigerian scene – one who've got a sound that's as much American electro soul of the early 80s as it is some of the other West African music of the time! The group features really nice interplay between the vocals and the keyboards – the latter of which often have a stark quality that keeps things from ever sounding too slick or smooth – maybe more in the territory of east coast indie soul in the post-P&P Records years. Yet there's also definitely some island elements at times too, more in the vocals and some of the themes of the lyrics – a slight nod to the earlier generation of Cymade and Beginning of the End, while still really retaining the group's own flavor. The pleasure principle is in full effect here – a really special sort of feeling that strongly shows off the female side of the Parliament/Funkadelic mothership! The album's got a groove that's way different than most female disco of the time – more offbeat and angular, thanks to funky backings from George Clinton and crew – with arrangements from Bernie Worell and Fred Wesley that have lots of great twists and turns! In a way, the mix of funk and club almost echoes the vibe of work on the P&P labels – but with a bit more punch and polish too, thanks to Clinton's great production. One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. The title cut "Hotel Sheet" has this wonderful popping moogy sound that's very nice – and other tracks include "Funky Disco Party", "Shar", "Hi Mom, Hi Al", and "Get Right On Top". CD

Two great labels, teamed up in one mighty compilation – a massive batch of rare club tracks unearthed by Chicago's Past Due label, packaged together wonderfully by the folks at BBE! So far, Past Due's efforts have only surfaced as expensive 12" singles – so this collection is the first full length set to showcase the label's music – a treasure trove of under-discovered gems from the indie soul underground of the late 70s and early 80s! The music is to the far left of some of the better-known club work from the east coast of the time – including that of P&P Records – and most cuts here almost fall more in the upbeat funk mode than conventional disco grooves you'd find on bigger labels. A soaring club classic from Venus Dodson – and a set that's maybe equally well-known for its strong production work from clubby maestros Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess – who each handled one side of the album! The tunes build beautifully with all those well-crafted, deeply soulful styles you'd know from the underground work by Adams and Burgess – and Venus provides the perfect forward talents for the grooves – really giving them focus and energy, even though most numbers are long enough for lots of cool instrumental flourishes too! "Shining" is a great standout cut here – almost a tighter take on the funky club of the P&P label – and other cuts include "It's My Turn", "Night Rider", "Where Are We Headed", and "He Said She Said". Latin inflected club grooves by the legendary El Coco – a fantastic group who often worked with the same sort of spacey elements that you'd find in work from the P&P family of labels! The group were probably the most successful to come from the team of Michal Lewis and Laurin Rinder – and although things are maybe not as jazzy or far out as some of the other Rinder & Lewis records, there's still plenty of those elements in the mix! A really spacey number from the P&P studios – filled with moog alongside the vocals, and set to a snapping boogie-styled groove! Wayne Ford's vocals are fine, but the real attraction here is the production – which has the vocals buried in favor of the cooler instrumental sounds of the tune! There's a style here that's not unlike some of the best club work of the P&P Records generation – a three-female vocal approach that's borrowed from the mainstream, but which is set to quirkier grooves that bubble and percolate in a really great way – boogie rhythms at many points, but peppered with cool keyboard parts that sometimes get a bit spacey – and which make the record a real underground groover in the best way possible! Some of the funkiest, clubbiest work we've ever heard from the African scene of the 70s – great grooves that would be right at home on the New York dancefloors of the time! The style here is definitely drawn from disco, yet is a lot more funk-based too – more in the farther reaches of the disco underground of the late 70s – with some of the offbeat touches you might hear from some of the P&P family of labels. Basslines are often stronger than the beats – and although strings and other elements are sometimes used to sweeten the grooves – the approach is never too commercial, and never softens up the funky rhythms at the bottom. Kiki plays keyboards, sings a bit, and does a great job on production – working under his own name, and with some other key projects as well.
