VariousP&P Presents Happy Music & Friends – A Selection Of Classic & Cult Disco, Funk, & Soul ... CD
P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
An amazing collection of grooves – all pulled from the legendary P&P Records family of labels from the New York underground – hand-selected by Japanese DJ/collectors Ken Hidaka and Frankie Valentine! If you don't know the P&P groove, this is a great place to start – as the label had a really unique, really wonderful sound – tracks from the disco era, but stripped down to their core – so that the rhythms are really raw, instrumentation is nice and funky, and most of the music has this searing power that's kept the P&P tracks on the hippest of dancefloors for decades! A number of the cuts have really cool electronics, some others bring in some old school modes, and there's an equal balance between vocals and instrumentals that really keeps things exciting. Titles include "I Got You Dancing" by Karisma with Jocelyn Brown, "Ain't It Time (inst)" by Queen Yahna, "Magic Carpet" by High Fidelity, "Pound For Pound" by Le'o Roy, "Spank Me (voc)" by Bobby Mann, "Smooth Talk (inst)" by Mr Fox, "Johnson Jumpin (12" mix)" by Johnson Products, "Got To Get Your Love (voc)" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "African Rock" by Licky, "Stomp Your Feet & Dance (voc)" by Kim Taylor, "Roller Rink Funk" by Shift, "New York's Movin" by Ahzz, "Shake Off That Dream (disco)" by Eddie Owen, and "Freaktime" by Scott Davis & The Movements. ✨✧ Cloud One & OthersFlying High – Patrick Adams P&P Masters ... CD
P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from one of the coolest club labels of all time – the legendary P&P family of labels, home to some of the weirdest, wildest, most experimental tracks to ever hit the dancefloor – yet all tracks that are pretty darn funky too! This 2CD collection is heavy on cuts from Cloud One – one of the most well-known P&P acts, often working with weird moogy electronics over funky club rhythms – a combination that still sounds as fantastic now as when Patrick Adams got the group going way back when – especially in the company of some of the other cool cuts that are on the collection too. Cloud One tracks include "Music Funk", "Funky Track", "Disco Juice", "Dust To Dust", "Spaced Out", "Charleston Hopscotch", "Atmosphere Strut (parts 1 & 2)", "Doin It All Night Long", "Jump Jump Jump", "Flying High (part 1)", "Patty Duke", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Atmosphere Strut (1979 rmx – part 2)", and "Happy Music" – and other tracks include "God's Greatest Gift To Man Is A Woman" by Marie Lomax, "My Baby's Got ESP (orig 7" mix)" by Four Below Zero, "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" by Golden Flamingo Orchestra, "Dance Dance Dance (disco version)" by Maria Acuna, "God Save & Protect Children" by Margo Williams, "Ain't Gonna Be A Next Time (short version)" by Magnetic Touch, and "It's Rough (dub)" by The Imperial Three. Cloud OneAtmosphere Strut ... LP
P&P, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the holy grails of the Spaced Out club music scene! Patrick Adams produced and arranged (and wrote and probably performed) this stunning set of spacey club grooves with a cool electronic feel, and a nice sense of mid to up-tempo rhythms. Includes the classic "Atmospheric Strut", one of the moogiest tracks around, plus the classics "Spaced Out" and "Disco Juice". All cuts are great, though, and the album's also got a good soul sound that often gets overlooked, especially on the cut "Doin' It All Night Long". A great one, and on the rare P&P label! Cloud OneSpaced Out – The Best Of Cloud One ... CD
P&P, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 15.98
Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". P&P/Counterpoint (UK), Late 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
2 tracks lifted from the Disco Juice 2 compilation – both from the P&P Records catalog! "25 Hours" is a pretty fantastic club track – starts slow with spaced out beats, then picks up the pace with strange guitar bits, soulful vocals, and gives way to a honking sax solo in the middle! The "re-edit" focuses on the tenor part, and strips the rhythm track down so you get even more of that great guitar work! "Super Jay Love Theme" is a slower number – with a beat that's almost in the rollerskating mode, punctuated by some conga parts, a slapping rhythm, and some really spaced out moogy P&P touches! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Jo BissoLove Somebody ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99 About May 17, 2023
Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

BuariDisco Soccer ... CD
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". A rare gem of a record that's every bit as much a funk party as the disco celebration promised in the title – done with this lean, stripped-down vibe that often hits some of the same fast funk territory as late 70s gems from the P&P family of record labels! There's a nicely offbeat vibe going on here – a combo who clearly have chops from the funky 45 generation, picking up the pace a bit for the clubs, but also never going for a slavish pop disco style either – which means that the whole thing continues with a really great sort of edge, as congas in the rhythms come into play with lots of riffing guitar and some pretty massive basslines! All tracks are instrumental, which continues the funky 45 vibe of the set – and titles include "Let's Party People", "Movin & Groovin", "Road", "Reality", "Disco Party", "Clap & Hustle", and "Welcome". A very soulful little group from the Nigerian scene – one who've got a sound that's as much American electro soul of the early 80s as it is some of the other West African music of the time! The group features really nice interplay between the vocals and the keyboards – the latter of which often have a stark quality that keeps things from ever sounding too slick or smooth – maybe more in the territory of east coast indie soul in the post-P&P Records years. Never-heard music from the great Richie Weeks – an artist you might know for his work in New York dancefloor groups The Jammers and Weeks & Co – but who's heard here on cuts that represent his never-ending efforts to come up with great grooves in the studio! Much of this music was done in collaboration with Patrick Adams of P&P Records fame – and at some level, lots of the cuts have that nicely offbeat vibe that marks the best of P&P – a lean, mean style that's very different than the fuller sound of mainstream disco, and which really gets to the core of the groove! A few cuts have vocals from Tanyayette Willoughby, and one more features work from the great Leroy Burgess – on titles that include "I'll Keep You Up", "Just Cause I Don't Dance (voc mix)", "Love Magician (version 2)", "At The Disco", "I've Been There Before (version 2)", "Who Cares (version 4)", "How Many Times (version 4)", "Everyone Knows (version 3)", "Find That Disco Rhythm (version 2)", and "Just Cause I Don't Dance (version 2)". A cool collection of cuts from one of the hippest groups working on the Trinidad scene in the late 70s – a group who were making work for the clubs, but in a style that was often a lot more lean than mainstream disco! There's a nicely offbeat vibe to this work – not Caribbean funk, but maybe more in the territory of some of the quirkier work from the American underground, ala P&P Records – at least in the presentation and production! Yet there's also definitely some island elements at times too, more in the vocals and some of the themes of the lyrics – a slight nod to the earlier generation of Cymade and Beginning of the End, while still really retaining the group's own flavor. Titles include "Try Making Love", "The Dealer", "Sexy Lady You", "A Little More Love", "The Rebels", "Check It Out", "Livin On A String", and "Dance With Me". The pleasure principle is in full effect here – a really special sort of feeling that strongly shows off the female side of the Parliament/Funkadelic mothership! The album's got a groove that's way different than most female disco of the time – more offbeat and angular, thanks to funky backings from George Clinton and crew – with arrangements from Bernie Worell and Fred Wesley that have lots of great twists and turns! In a way, the mix of funk and club almost echoes the vibe of work on the P&P labels – but with a bit more punch and polish too, thanks to Clinton's great production. The whole thing's great – way more than just another female disco album – and titles include "Mr Melody Man", "Cookie Jar", "Love Amnesia", "Misunderstanding", "Are You Dreaming", and "Pleasure Principle". ✨✧ Jack AshfordHotel Sheet ... CD
Magic Disc/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. The title cut "Hotel Sheet" has this wonderful popping moogy sound that's very nice – and other tracks include "Funky Disco Party", "Shar", "Hi Mom, Hi Al", and "Get Right On Top". CD

Two great labels, teamed up in one mighty compilation – a massive batch of rare club tracks unearthed by Chicago's Past Due label, packaged together wonderfully by the folks at BBE! So far, Past Due's efforts have only surfaced as expensive 12" singles – so this collection is the first full length set to showcase the label's music – a treasure trove of under-discovered gems from the indie soul underground of the late 70s and early 80s! The music is to the far left of some of the better-known club work from the east coast of the time – including that of P&P Records – and most cuts here almost fall more in the upbeat funk mode than conventional disco grooves you'd find on bigger labels. Most numbers groove along in a wave of bumping bass, sweet keyboards, and other hip instrumental touches – and vocals are usually deep and soulful, much more so than in ordinary club. 2CD set features one CD of unmixed tracks, and one CD fully mixed with additional work from Paul Randolph – both with titles that include "Galaxy" by Visions Of Tomorrow, "Midnight Rhythm" by The Right Direction, "The Heat Is On" by Lonnie Givens, "Get Up Get Down & Let Your Body Pop" by Greyship Daviz, "Dance" by Destiny In Time Band, "Party" by Monofide, "Kiss You Everywhere" and "You Are Number One" by Devarne, "You Bring Out The Best In Me" by DIT, and "If You Like What We're Doing" by The Fabulous Kings. Some of the funkiest, clubbiest work we've ever heard from the African scene of the 70s – great grooves that would be right at home on the New York dancefloors of the time! The style here is definitely drawn from disco, yet is a lot more funk-based too – more in the farther reaches of the disco underground of the late 70s – with some of the offbeat touches you might hear from some of the P&P family of labels. Basslines are often stronger than the beats – and although strings and other elements are sometimes used to sweeten the grooves – the approach is never too commercial, and never softens up the funky rhythms at the bottom. Most numbers groove along in a wave of bumping bass, sweet keyboards, and other hip instrumental touches – and vocals are usually deep and soulful, much more so than in ordinary club. Titles include "Galaxy" by Visions Of Tomorrow, "Midnight Rhythm" by The Right Direction, "The Heat Is On" by Lonnie Givens, "Get Up Get Down & Let Your Body Pop" by Greyship Daviz, "Dance" by Destiny In Time Band, "Party" by Monofide, "Kiss You Everywhere" and "You Are Number One" by Devarne, "You Bring Out The Best In Me" by Destiny In Time, and "If You Like What We're Doing" by The Fabulous Kings. (Funky Compilations, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Red Greg, 1976. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent! The cut's a dancefloor classic – and it's got this wonderful little moogy instrumentation that's a perfect example of the genius of Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael, who put the whole thing together, and who give the cut a real P&P funky flavor. A real killer, and one that we never tire of! 12-inch, Vinyl record
