Nikki GiovanniReason I Like Chocolate ... LP
Folkways, 1976. Near Mint- ... $29.99 34.99
A beautiful post-Atlantic album from Nikki Giovanni – much more intimate and personal than her better known work, with only Nikki's voice throughout the album – heard on a number of shorter poems! At some level, Giovanni seems to have left behind the more righteous themes of before, and is going for a mode here that's a bit more everyday – but still touched with the deeper reflections that make her so great. The titles of the poems tell enough about the subject matter – and they include "Parent's Never Understand", "Mommie's Daddies", "Ego Tripping", "James Shell's Snowball Stand", "Knoxville Tennessee", "Winter Poem", "The Drum", and "Kidnap Poem". (In great shape!)

✨✧ Nikki GiovanniLike A Ripple On A Pond ... LP
Niktom/Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little record from a time when whole new ideas of righteous pride and power were hitting the record racks – a moment that's perfectly summed up in a treasure like this! Poet Nikki Giovanni had already gotten some acclaim for her words on paper – and here, the message of her writing is blended with stunning work from the New York Community Choir – a very hip gospel group with lots of secular elements in their rhythms and arrangements – handled here wonderfully by director Benny Diggs. Nikki speaks her own words in between sung passages by the group – for a set that's got a very deep spirit, and strong secular appeal too. Titles include "Conversation", "Prison Poem", "Mothers", "Straight Talk", and the great "Scrapbook", set to Duke Pearson's "Christo Redentor". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nikki GiovanniTruth Is On Its Way ... CD
Collectables, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing setting for the righteous words and message of Nikki Giovanni – as the set has the poet working with backing vocals by the New York Community Choir, who also recorded a great soul album on RCA around the same time – and an overall approach that elevates Nikki's poetry into a very spiritual realm! There's definitely some gospel currents to the music, but Givoanni's words and spoken passages have much more down to earth concerns – the mix of political and personal themes that made her one of the most important young black poets of her generation. The whole thing is fantastic – very powerful throughout, with titles that include "My Tower", "Poem For A Lady Of Leisure Now Retired", "Second Rapp Poem", "Great Pax Whitey", "Poem For Aretha", and "Ego Tripping". ✨✧ Nikki GiovanniCotton Candy On A Rainy Day ... CD
Folkways, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the lesser-known 70s albums by Nikki Giovanni – a wonderful selection of material from her book Cotton Candy On A Rainy Day – read in a spare setting, without any musical accompaniment! In some ways, this album's even better than the more famous Giovanni albums on Atlantic – as Nikki's vocals really come across beautifully without any music – strong and expressive, but without any overdone moments – and clearly no attempt to commercialize her words by turning them into songs. Titles include "Gus", "Habits", "Boxes", "Crutches", "The New Yorkers", and "Winter". CD

✨✧ Nikki GiovanniWay I Feel ... LP
Niktom/Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest albums ever cut by the mighty Nikki Giovanni – a set that has these fantastic arrangements from Arif Mardin that are in the best style of early 70s Atlantic Records soul – provided with drums from Bernard Pretty Purdie, keyboards from Richard Tee, guitar from Cornell Dupree, and bass from Doug Bascomb! Yet over and above the music, Nikki's clearly the star of the set – delivering her own words in a blend of funk and poetry that really sets a whole new standard for the genre – even amidst some of the heavy company that Giovanni was keeping at the time. Titles include "A Certain Peace", "The Women Gather", "The Way I Feel", "Just An NY Poem", "Seduction/Kidnap Poem", "Winter Poem", and "My House". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wanda RobinsonSoul Jazz Poetry (Black Ivory/Me & A Friend) ... CD
Perception/Castle (UK), 1971/1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most righteous poetry ever recorded – set to musical backings with a nice dose of funk! Wanda Robinson belongs to an elite group of young, hip female African American poets – others might include Nikki Giovanni, Dana Bryant, or Camille Yarbrough – and during the early 70s, she recorded 2 totally great albums for the underground funk label Perception. Both albums – Black Ivory and Me & A Friend – mix together funky jazz and mellow soul instrumentation, laid out underneath Wanda's strong, sincere readings of her own work. The titles of the tracks should give you more than enough of a picture of the work – and they include "Carnal Was The Word", "The Un Hero", "Paranoia", "Good Things Come", "A Black Oriented Love Poem", "The Meeting Place", and "The Trouble With Dreams".
