✨✧ Jimmy HolidaySpread Your Love – The Complete Minit Singles 1966 to 1970 ... CD
Minit/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
One of our favorite soul singers on the LA scene of the 60s – served up here in a complete run of his legendary singles for the Minit label! Jimmy Holiday never fully got his due back in the day – partly because he was a successful songwriter who was often working behind the scenes – but he's a hell of a singer with a style that's rooted in the south, but given some hipper, more sophisticated touches on the west coast – with almost the same mix of the rough and the smooth you'd find in the best Minit label recordings by the young Bobby Womack! Jimmy's very much his own man, though – a standout talent that really gets his due here in a mindblowing batch of music. The b-sides are every bit as wonderful as the a-sides – and given Holiday's knowledge of a tune from the ground up, he really has a great way of putting over the lyrics. The package features two duets with female singer Clydie King – "Ready Willing & Able" and "We Got A Good Thing Goin" – plus 24 more tracks that include "I'm In Love With You", "Baby I Love You", "Turning Point", "The Beauty Of A Girl In Love", "Spread Your Love", "Everything Is Love", "Yesterday Died", "A Man Ain't Nothin Without A Woman", "I'm Gonna Move To The City", "In The Eyes Of My Girl", "Everybody Needs Help", "Baby Boy's In Love",a nd "I Wanna Help Hurry My Brothers Home". ShowmenIt Will Stand ... CD
Collectables/Minit, Early 60s. Used ... $5.99
Rare work by The Showmen – a great harmony vocal group from the early 60s, and the first famous group to feature General Johnson – the unique singer who later went onto front Chairmen Of The Board! The tracks here have a rough doo-woppy quality – dripping with soul, and handled in a spare production style that really brings out the best in the vocals – especially the General's strong lead. Tracks include a number of rare singles by the group, obscure takes, plus a few previously unissued titles – and although this one's a bit slim on notes, it is just about the only way you'll find any of this material. Titles include "It Will Stand", "The Owl Sees You", 'Swish Fish", "Strange Girl", "This Misery", "The Wrong Girl", and "Fate Planned It This Way". CD

✨✧ Gene Dozier & the BrotherhoodBlues Power ... LP
Minit, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Forget the blues in the title – as this is a funky soul instrumental gem – a really great record from the mighty Gene Dozier – an artist you might know best for his work in the funky 45 format – and who certainly brings that energy to bear on this unusual album for Minit Records! Gene turns in some killer originals that really live up to the best funky 45 mode – including "One For Bess" and "Hunk Of Funk", both with nice grooves – and the set also has some great soul instrumentals, including versions "Watermelon Man", "Soul Stroll", and "Cold Sweat". ✨✧ Jimmy HolidayTurning Point – The Exciting Voice Of Jimmy Holiday ... LP
Minit, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Dang, who is this guy? Jimmy's got a really wonderful voice (the title wasn't kidding!), with the mix of rootsiness and intensity that you'd find in the best mid 60s sides by Ben E King, inflected by some of the harder soul sound of the Minit label. Calvin Carter's producing the set here – working during the post Vee Jay years in LA – and arrangements are by Rene Hall and Jimmy Gordon. The set's a treasure, the kind of lost soul album that keeps you hitting these pages every week – and it's filled with great tracks like "I'm Gonna Move To The City", "The Turning Point", "In The Eyes Of My Girl", "I Don't Want To Hear It", and "I've Got To Live While I Can". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono promo pressing with deep groove – a nice clean copy!)

✨✧ Bobby WomackMy Prescription ... LP
Minit, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Completely wonderful work from Bobby Womack – one of those records that shows why Bobby's so different from other singers, right from the start! Womack's guitar lines are beautiful – and echo a lot of country styles alongside his raspy vocals – but hardly at a level that's cliched country soul at all, given the overall freshness of the arrangements! Bobby handled the charts, along with Glen Spreen and Mike Leech – and the great Chips Moman produced, and gives the set a sparkling southern style overall – but one that also seems to point strongly towards Womack's wider reach towards the west coast. Womack's songwriting is already great, but even the tracks here by other writers still get a treatment that really make them his own – including Bobby's classic take on "Everyone's Gone To The Moon". Original tracks include "How I Miss You Baby", "More Than I Can Stand", "It's Gonna Rain", "Tried & Convicted", and "Thank You". LP, Vinyl record album

Allen ToussaintEverything I Do Gonh Be Funky – The Hit Songs & Productions 1957 to 1978 ... CD
Charly (UK), Late 1950s/1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99 14.99
A beautifully overstuffed collection of early work from New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a set that not only includes many of his key recordings from the scene in the 60s, but also some of his important productions for other artists too! The package begins with Toussaint in the lead on a series of sides on CD one – working either as himself, or as Al Touson, or with The Stones, The Rubyiats, or Allen & Allen – all with these choppy, loping, heavy-grooving rhythms that were Toussaint's huge contribution to New Orleans soul right from the start! Titles include "Whirlaway", "Whipped Cream", "Moo Moo", "Wham Tousan", "Omar Khayyam", "I Don't Need One", "Baby Do Liddle", "Tomorrow", "Fat Cat", "Banana Split", and "Java". CD2 features a series of recordings done for the Minit, Instant, and Sansu labels – all with Toussaint involved either as producer, arranger, or musician – on material that forever shaped the sound of New Orleans – titles that include "A Certain Girl" by Ernie K Doe, "Over You" by Aaron Neville, "I Like It Like That (parts 1 & 2)" by Chris Kenner, "Sophisticated Cissy" by The Meters, "Holy Cow" by Lee Dorsey, "I'm Evil Tonight" by Betty Harris, "Oogsey Moo" by Jessie Hill, "It Will Stand" by The Showmen, "Ruler Of My Heart" by Irma Thomas, "Fortune Teller" by Benny Spellman, and "Hot Tamales (parts 1 & 2)" by The Primemates. 50 tracks in all! ✨✧ Aaron NevilleHercules – The Minut & Sansu Sessions 1960 To 1977 ... CD
Snapper (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great anthology of recordings by New Orleans vocal legend Aaron Neville produced by Allen Toussaint – one CD featuring great early work from Aaron, singles from his early days recording for the Minit label on one disc – and some great, badly overlooked Sansu recordings from the late 60s and right on up to the mid 70s, leading to the formation of the Neville Brothers group! We've long loved the early 60s Minit recordings, which range from little regional R&B numbers, to really beautiful ballady numbers with Crescent City piano and Aaron's uniquely soulful phrasing. The Sansu sessions are just as great and more stylistcally varied, with organ-drenched southern soul numbers, many in a slower grooving style that really makes beautiful use of Aaron's voice – which had matured greatly by this point! Minit tracks include "Over You", "Sweet Little Mama", "Don't Cry", "Let's Live", "I've Done It Again", "Ticks Of The Clock", "Humdinger", "Don't Cry", "Wrong Number (I'm Sorry, Goodbye)", "For Every Boy There's A Girl" and many more, plus 7 bonus alternate takes. Sansu sessions include "You Can Give But You Can't Take", "All These Things", "The Greatest Love", "Performance", "She's On My Mind", "Baby, I'm A Want You", "Speak To Me", "All These Things" and many more, plus 8 bonus tracks from the period. 47 tracks on 2CDs! ✨✧ O'JaysFull Of Soul ... LP
Sunset, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sunset issue of some of the sides that the O'Jays cut for Minit in the mid 60s – sounding quite different here than on their later Philly hits! They're working here in a more rough soul harmony style – sung with an incredible depth, and recorded with backings that really let the vocals come to the forefront of the tracks. Some of the cuts are in a deep soul mode, others are more upbeat and Northern soul-styled – but the whole thing's great, and the album's about as classic a set of 60s soul as you can get! 10 numbers in all: "Lipstick Traces", "Think It Over Baby", "Lonely Drifter", "Hold On", "Working On Your Case", "A Blowing Wind", "Stand Tall", "It Won't Hurt", "I'm Gonna Make It" and "Oh How You Hurt Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a mark that clicks a bit on "Stand Tall". Cover has lightly bumped corners.)

✨✧ Bobby WomackLookin' For A Love Again ... LP
United Artists, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Bobby Womack – one of those records that has all his best elements firmly in place, put forward at a level that's sophisticated and polished, yet never too commercial at all! Bobby's voices are still incredible – that raspy, personal feel that's rooted in country and deeper soul modes, yet ready to take on the mainstream as well – and the tracks also still feature lots of his wonderful guitar work, which inflects the music with these deeper feelings that really holds strong – and definitely lives up to the initial charm of Womack's first few records on Minit. Most of the set was recorded at Muscle Shoals, but as a place where Womack was travelling from LA – a fact that definitely shows in the mix of rootsy elements and tighter construction – yet still handled here without any of the cliches that so many other artists might hit when recording on that scene. Titles include the killer funky stepper "You're Welcome Stop On By", which has been sampled and covered many times over the years – plus "I Don't Wanna Be Hurt By Ya Love Again", "Let It Hang Out", "Lookin For A Love", "Doing It My Way", and "Don't Let Me Down". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner, bumped corner, and is lightly bent with staple holes a the top left corner.)

✨✧ Ernie K DoeErnie K Doe Vol 2 ... LP
Bandy, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
New Orleans soul classics from the legendary Ernie K Doe – an artist who helped the city's scene bridge the gap between earlier boogie modes and later funk to come! All these cuts have a chunky vibe that comes from heavy piano on the rhythms – triplets that spin out wonderfully, and ground the grooves in the deeper side of the spectrum – while Ernie delivers his vocals in a style that's raspy, but also nicely loping – with a much rhythmic power as the instrumentation. Volume 2 includes sides from early Minit singles, with titles the include "Certain Girl", "Real Man", "Easier Said Than Done", "Loving You", "Beatin' Like A Tom Tom", "I Cried My Last Tear", and more. ✨✧ Bobby WomackUnderstanding ... CD
United Artists/Right Stuff, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer 70s work from Bobby Womack – reinventing himself here in a great style that keeps all the warmth and soulfulness of his Minit recordings, and gives it a healthy dose of 70s soul production – creating a sweet new groove that pushed Womack into a huge new audience at the time! Bobby strikes a perfect balance here – keeping things hip, but also tightening things up too – yet never by getting too smooth or too commercial. The result is a great batch of tracks that includes classics like "I Can Understand It", "Woman's Gotta Have it", and "Harry Hippy" – as well as a nice version of "Sweet Caroline", and Jimmy Lewis' great "Got To Get You Back". ✨✧ MinitsFollow Your Heart – The Sound Of Memphis Recordings ... CD
Sounds Of Memphis/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Beautiful female soul from The Minits – a three piece group that recorded just a few singles for the the Sounds Of Memphis label – with a dozen great songs pulled together for this excellent compilation from Kent UK, many of which were never issued before now! Ultimately, there were far too few female soul stars coming out of Memphis with popularity anywhere near the levels of the male stars, and fewer still on labels other than Stax or Hi – and the dozen tracks here make a very strong case for The Minits, who should have busted out hugely. The set is light on ballads and skews towards dancefloor ready rhythms and pop soul of the best kind, with genuine soul! It includes their great Sounds Of Memphis singles and several tracks that were left in the vaults and only recently discovered. Titles include "Lover Boy", "Still A Part Of Me", "Last Mile Of The Way", "Pullin'", "Natural Reaction", "If You Don't Like My Apples (Don't Shake The Tree)", "Follow Your Heart" and more. CD

VariousSteppin Stone – The XL & Sounds Of Memphis Story Vol 3 ... CD
Sounds Of Memphis/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Rare and previously unreleased magic from the Memphis soul scene of the late 60s & early 70s – the third release in Kent's compilation series of gems from the Sounds Of Memphis and XL labels – possibly the rarest collection to date! The numbers here have a proudly southern soul groove at the core, but there's a breadth of styles and deep well of talent at play and this set really gets at the heart of it. Many of the tracks here are on par with the best known southern soul of the era and are as effective as the biggest hits – and we're hearing most of it for the first time! Soulful numbers from singers and groups alike – great stuff by The Minits, George Jackson, The Ovations, Erma Shaw, Willie Walker and many more. We keep thinking that the vaults will empty out, but Kent keeps digging more Sounds Of Memphis treasures – here's hoping it continues! 22 tracks in all: "If You Never See Me" and "Run Around" by Willie Walker, "Hook Line & Sinker" and "Lover Boy" by The Minits, "How Can I Get Next To You" (alternate vocal) and "Love Trying To Come" by George Jackson, "You're Slipping Away" and "Take A Look At Yourself" by Dan Greer, "Guessing Game" by Jimi Hall, "The Plumber" by The Ovations and more. ✨✧ VariousMasterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 2 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title totally gets it right – because these are some wonderfully put-together soul tunes – mini-masterpieces of the modern variety, and the kind of cuts that are ripe for rediscovery today! Hardly any of these cuts got their due back in the 70s, but they've all got a completely sublime sound – that groove that first started as Northern Soul turned into modern – when the rhythms laid back a bit more and the lyrics hipped up a bit – moving past simple soul themes into even deeper, more mature modes. Production is great, but never commercial at all – and most of the singers still have a really great edge – raspy enough to really bring enough feeling to the tunes, but poised with the right maturity to fit the music. Completely wonderful throughout, and even better than the first volume – with 24 tracks that include some great harmonies on many numbers. Titles include "Double Love" by The California Playboys, "A Broken Heart Cries" by The Pretenders, "It's Better To Cry" by Johnny Watson, "What Hurts" by Grover Mitchell, "Still A Part Of Me" by The Minits, "Lovin" by The Pacesetters, "Always" by Garland Green, "You Gotta Be A Lady" by The Chargers, "That's The Way Our Love Is" by The Radiations, "You're Gonna Lose Me" by Freddie Hubbard & Jeanie Tracy, "Hope For Love" by Darrow Fletcher", "I Can See Him Loving You" by The Mayberry Movement, "More Than Just Somebody I Know" by Brenda Wayne, "The Fool Who Used To Live Here" by Betty Fikes, "I'm A Dreamer" by Bobby Burn, and "Wear Your Natural Baby" by Towana & The Total Destruction.
