✨✧ LaVern BakerLaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker – a great blend of modes that really comes off great! Instead of sounding like a throwback blues album, the set comes across with a nice degree of contemporary class – thanks in part to a jazzy presentation that's a bit different than some of Baker's other music of the time – and which sports reeds from Sahib Shihab, tenor from Paul Quinichette, trumpet from Buck Clayton, and trombone from Jimmy Cleveland! Baker's voice is in fine form in this comfortable setting – and really works magic with tracks that include "After You've Gone", "Preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s Jazzlore pressing.)

Big MaybelleBig Maybelle – The Okeh Sessions ... LP
Okeh/Columbia, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
A bit blues, a bit jazz – and a singer with a style unto her own – the amazing Big Maybelle, one of the greatest artists to record for Okeh Records in the 50s! This well-done collection pulls together every single Maybelle recorded for the R&B powerhouse back in the day – a motherlode of great work that easily puts her right up there with Lavern Baker or Ruth Brown as one of the great female singers of the 50s. The package features a whopping 22 tracks in all – including many bits that get lost between the tracks in some of the too-sifted collections of her work from the time. Titles include "Maybelle's Blues", "Hair Dressin Women", "My Big Mistake", "Ain't No Use", "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show", "So Good To My Baby", "Gabbin Blues", "You'll Never Know", and "New Kind Of Mambo". Ben E KingRise Of Ben E King – 1959 to 1963 ... CD
Atlantic/Contrast, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... $3.99
A set that does a great job of opening up the early years of this wonderful soul singer – a collection that not only features Ben E King's initial solo classics, but also his incredible lead work with The Drifters – plus a pair of rare duets with Atlantic Records' R&B powerhouse Lavern Baker! King in The Drifters is wonderful – a different voice than previous star Clyde McPhatter, and one who really humanized the group – even when they were hitting a newer groove for the 60s soul generation – and Ben continued that mature, sophisticated style in his own music too – tracks that are able to sound heartbreaking, but completely in charge of their emotions too. King's maybe least familiar on the two duets with Baker – "A Help Each Other Romance" and "How Often" – but those cuts are also a great demonstration of his range as well. Other titles include "Dance With Me", "I Count The Tears", "Oh My Love", "Amor", "Young Boy Blues", "First Taste Of Love", "Brace Yourself", "Too Bad", "Don't Drive Me Away", "Walking In The Footsteps Of A Fool", "Tell Daddy", and "I'm Standing By". Little Esther (Esther Phillips)Memory Lane – The Best Songs Little Esther Ever Recorded ... CD
King, Mid 50s. New Copy ... $7.99 9.99
Fantastic early work from Esther Phillips – recording here as a young girl, under the name of Little Esther – but with a voice that's every bit as great as on her 60s recordings for Atlantic, or her 70s hits on the CTI/Kudu label! The music is a mixture of R&B and blues – the latter infused with some larger charts that already show the kind of class that would set Esther apart from so many of her contemporaries – and make the vocalist a key bridge between generations during the years that soul music would search for more sophisticated sounds. The vibe is very much in the best styles that Lavern Baker was recording for Atlantic – with a similar richness in modes – and titles include "Sweet Lips", "The Storm", "I Paid My Dues", "Heart To Heart", "Cherry Wine", "Aged & Mellow", "The Deacon Moves In", "Tell Him That I Need Him", "I'll Be There", "Street Lights", "Mainliner", and "Ring A Ding Doo". Outta Sight (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Deeply soulful sounds from a crucial time in music – that late 50s/early 60s stretch when R&B was merging into soul, and created so many wonderful records in the process! The set's filled with quick-stepping groovers that are on the hip side of the spectrum – tunes that might have a jazzy inflection here, or a skittish rhythm there – and always topped by a fantastic singer who really knows how to belt it out of the park! These are the same sort of gems we've been digging on Jazzman's Jukebox Jam series – and titles include "Screaming Please" by Buddy Ace, "Anytime" by Dee Irwin, "Where's My Money" by Willie Jones, "For This I Thank You" by Geno Parks Lovetones, "It's Alright" by Art Lassiter, "You Don't Have To Go" by Sam Myers, "A Help Each Other Romance" by Lavern Baker & Ben E King, "Miss You So" by Lillian Offitt, "Workin Man's Song" by The Falcons, and "Sally Lou" by Little Frankie Edwards. ✨✧ BobbettesWe Shot Mr Lee ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A group who are best known for one huge hit in 1957 – but one who also recorded a fair bit of other wonderful material too – not just their early singles for Atlantic Records, but also a lot of material for other companies too – as you'll hear in this collection that brings together singles for King, Jubilee, Triple X, End, and other labels too! Although a girl group, The Bobbettes have lots of nice rough edges that are more R&B and deep soul overall – hardly the sweet pop of groups that would follow them in the 60s, and instead maybe a group expression of some of the modes that Ruth Brown and Lavern Baker were cutting for Atlantic – with maybe some of the energy of the doo wop groups thrown in for good measure. CD features 31 tracks – titles include "Speedy", "Zoomy", "Untrue Love", "I Shot Mr Lee", "Mr Lee", "I Don't Like It Like That (parts 1 & 2)", "Mr Johnny Q", "Looking For A Lover", "Mama Papa", "Over There", "Loneliness", "I Cried", "Um Bow Bow", and "The Dream".
