✨✧ Jimmy Castor/Main Ingredient/Jose Feliciano/othersKeep The Dream Alive – Dr Martin Luther King ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Excellent raw live set from the early 70s – featuring a host of artists from the RCA stable, all paying tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King. The best stuff on here is by Jimmy Castor, and the album includes a totally funky remake of "Hey Leroy" that's got little bits of "Trogolodyte" style funk – plus a version of "Trogolodyte" itself, and more. Other highlights include The Main Ingredient doing "Spinning Around", "Everybody Plays The Fool", and the Isley's great "Work To Do". Lots more by Flip Wilson, Jose Feliciano, Friends of Distinction, and others – plus some words of wisdom by Coretta King! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch and faint ring wear.)

✨✧ Jose Feliciano10 To 23 ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good ... $2.99
A groovy record from Jose – with his best kind of crossover feel! It's an unusual title – one that refers to the first track on the record, recorded by Jose Feliciano at age 10 – and the rest of the material included, done when Jose was 23 years old. It's a mixture of American soul, Latin roots, and Jose's own unique touches – that Feliciano blend of well-played acoustic guitar and super-sensitive vocals – all produced with a slightly airy feel that only adds to the mood of the tracks. Titles include "First Of May", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Little Red Rooster", "Miss Otis Regrets", "She's A Woman", and "I've Gotta Get A Message To You". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing in the textured cover, with some light surface wear & aging.)

Jose FelicianoAlive Alive O! ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
A beautiful little live album from Jose Feliciano – recorded in London at the end of the 60s, with a sound that's often more stripped down than his studio work of the time! Jose's on vocals and guitar, backed by only a bit of bass and percussion – so the record's almost got the intimacy of a solo effort, which is quite astounding – given the obvious size of the concert setting! The double-length nature of the record allows Jose to stretch out a bit more than usual – and take on a nice variety of material that really show his growing talents at the time. Titles include "High Heel Sneakers", "Mama Don't Allow It", "La Entrada De Bilboa", "The Comedy Bit", "Malaguena", "No Dogs Allowed", "Day Tripper", "Black Orpheus Medley", "California Dreamin", "Light My Fire", "Day In the Life", and "El Voh". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label stereo pressing. Cover has some ringwear, small top seam split, light edge wear.)

Jose FelicianoEncore – Jose Feliciano's Finest Performances ... LP
RCA, 1971. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A great summation of Jose Feliciano's genius during his initial years at RCA – that unique mix of Chicano soul, acoustic folk, and Latin rhythms that made him sound unlike anyone else at the time! There's a charm to this work that's undeniable – an instantly compelling feel that makes you understand just why folks went so nuts for Jose right from the start, and why his particular growth and contribution to American music was as important from his perspective during these years as was Stevie Wonder's over at Motown! The set features a mix of live work, singles, and album tracks – and titles include his haunting version of "California Dreaming", plus "Hitchcock Railway", "Nature Boy", "Light My Fire", "Susie Q", "Hi Heel Sneakers", "Destiny", "Malaguena", "Life Is That Way", and "Rain". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label stereo pressing in the embossed textured cover, with light surface wear and aging.)

Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure 70s album from the great Jose Feliciano – a set that was originally done as soundtrack material for an equally obscure film – Aaron Loves Angela – one that mixes Jose's more intimate style with some fuller backings from the disco generation! Barry Fasman handled the charts on most of the tracks – and the instrumentation features some nice larger touches, but with sharp instrumentation that even includes work from Willie Bobo on a few cuts too! Jose is fantastic vocally – able to come across with a wonderful sense of soul, which is often matched by some beautiful guitar work as well. Titles include "Angela", "Michelangelo", "Why", "Nirvana", "Sweet Street", "I've Got A Feeling", and "Salsa Negra". (Rock, Soul) CD

✨✧ Jose FelicianoFeliciano! ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. Backings are by George Tipton, plus a jazz combo made up of Jim Horn, Ray Brown, and Milt Holland – but it's Jose that really makes the whole thing amazing! His style of presentation is like anything else we can describe – filled with sadness and soul, but enough joy to keep moving forward. He takes tracks like "Light My Fire", "In My Life", "Sunny", and "California Dreamin", and transforms them into an amazing document of the darkness hidden behind the sun of southern California. "California Dreamin" is especially amazing – and Jose's version is one of the best soul songs of all time! (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(70s orange label stereo pressing.)

✨✧ Jose FelicianoSouled ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jose Feliciano really lives up to the title here – stepping out strongly with the same style used on his "California Dreamin" hit – a massive blend of strings, soul, and Jose's unique vocal approach! Feliciano came out of the Latin market in the 60s, but by the time of this record he's really a key crossover force in soul – and one that helped establish the brown-eyed variant of the music through his massive work for RCA. The instrumentation is often as groovy as the record – with backing by a small combo that includes Milt Holland on percussion, Ray Brown on bass, and Mike Melvoin on keyboards – plus added arrangements from RCA talents George Tipton and All Capps. Titles include the groovy "Hitchcock Railway", plus "Younger Generation", "Sad Gypsy", "Hi Heel Sneakers", "She's Too Good To Me", and "Sleep Late My Lady Friend". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing. Cover has minimal wear.)

✨✧ Jose FelicianoSweet Soul Music (with bonus track) ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked 70s gem from the great Jose Feliciano – a set that really continues the warm soul styles he'd hit on his last few years at RCA – a wonderful blend for his unique vocals and his tremendous way of putting over a tune! The set was recorded down at Muscle Shoals, but it's got a nicely subtle approach that never tries to lean on the modes of that studio too strongly – avoiding some of the cliches that other records might showcase in such a setting – and throughout it all, it's clear that Jose's the star in the spotlight, using that warmly crackling vocal approach in a wonderful way – especially on the more upbeat modern soul moments. Titles include "Every Woman", "Marguerita", "Loving Her Was Easier", "Sweet Soul Music", "I Love Making Love To You", "Love Comes From Unexpected Places", and "Funny/Night Life". CD features the bonus track "What I Wanna Do". (Rock, Soul) CD

✨✧ Jose FelicianoBag Full Of Soul ... LP
RCA, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from Jose Feliciano – and definitely the "bag full of soul" promised in the title, as the album's got a wonderfully heartfelt feel all the way through! Jose's voice is warm and beautifully melodic, and the arrangements are a bit more straight ahead than on later releases – with occasional folksy touches that highlight Jose's acoustic guitar playing, but still let his beautifully sweet vocals come through wonderfully. The sound is sometimes spare, sometimes upbeat and rollicking – and tracks include "If I Really Bug You", "Help", "A Woman A Lover A Friend", "Masters Of War", "Where I'm Going", and "Go On Your Way". Classic work by Jose in the style he forged in LA at the end of the 60s – a mix of 60s pop and soul with that wonderful Latin style he used, the one that made his vocals and guitar cry slightly with the rhythms, taking conventional and familiar songs, and opening them up in a whole new way, with a depth that's quite unexpected! Titles include "Destiny", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", "Blackbird", "Once There Was A Love", "Susie Q", "Yesterday", and "Pegao". (Rock, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Minnie RipertonMinnie (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol/Big Pink (South Korea), 1979. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
The last full album recorded by Minnie Riperton before she left our planet all too soon – and a killer batch of work that really has us wondering how great the world of soul music would have been, had Minnie stuck around to keep on growing into the 80s and 90s! The set's filled with the kind of all-star help that Riperton always seemed to attract over the years – strong contributions from Minnie's longtime fan/friend Stevie Wonder, plus work from Phil Upchurch, Jose Feliciano, Hubert Laws, Harvey Mason, Tom Scott, and many others – all helped out by Minnie and her partner/producer, the great Richard Rudolph – whose connection to Riperton can always be felt in the music. Titles include the great track "Memory Lane", which gets endless airplay here in Chicago, plus the beautiful ballad "Never Existed Before", and the cuts "I'm A Woman", "Lover & Friend", and "Return To Forever". ✨✧ RodriguezSearching For Sugar Man ... CD
Sussex/Sony, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from the legendary Rodriguez – the brilliant 70s singer who had a groove that was equal parts soul, funk, rock, and folk – and an overall approach that was pretty darn unique! Most numbers here have some acoustic guitar over slightly funky rhythms – perfectly scored to work with Rodriguez's raspy soul vocals, which have an undeniably heartfelt style – somewhere in a space between Terry Callier and early Jose Feliciano, but very much its own mode too! This CD features great gems from Rodriguez's years at Sussex Records – including three tracks not on the albums – "Can't Get Away", "Street Boy", and "I'll Slip Away" – plus other titles that include "Sugar Man", "Cause", "I Wonder", "Like Janis", "Jane S Piddy", "I Think Of You", "Inner City Blues", and "Sandrevan Lullaby Lifestyles".
