✨✧ Luther AllisonBad News Is Coming ... LP
Gordy, 1972. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A nice bit of funky blues, and a very strange record to appear on Motown! The production style and presentation are very rootsy – right down to the photo of Luther on the front cover, who's smoking a cigarette, but trying to pretend it's a joint! The style is electric blues of the Chicago school, but given a bit more of a country funk kind of sound. Titles include "Bad News Is Coming", "Dust My Broom", "Evil Is Going On", "Rock Me Baby", and "Raggedy & Dirty", which actually has some very nice drums! (Blues, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ContoursDo You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance) ... LP
Gordy, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, grooviest early group albums on Motown – sung by a group who've got a wonderfully rocking sound throughout – something you can probably guess from the placement of the guitar on the cover! That instrument steps out strongly on most numbers here – giving The Contours a deeper R&B sound than some of their smoother Motown contemporaries – a great bridge between earlier group soul styles of the 50s, and the Motown modes to come – produced here with some wicked piano lines that ring out strongly in the middle. Vocals are wonderfully raspy – often peaking out into the red as they reach for a lead lyric – and titles include the classic "Do You Love Me" – plus "Move Mr Man", "So Grateful", "The Stretch", "Shake Sherrie", "You Better Get In Line", "Whole Lotta Woman", and "It Must Be Love". ✨✧ High InergyTurnin On ... LP
Gordy, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album ever from this late 70s Motown group – a set that's got the girls really stepping out with a nice degree of power – in a groove that's different than the usual female disco mode of the time! The record's got a much more fully-formed sort of feel – not just a female chorus with grooves, but a real soul group who really know how to put things together – especially given the album's really nice balance between groovers, midtempo moments, and ballads – all of which give the whole thing a very well-rounded feel. Arrangements are by Greg Poree, Sylvester Rivers, Greg Washburn, and Jimmy Holiday – and titles include "You Can't Turn Me Off", "Searchin", "Ain't No Love Left", "Let Me Get Close To You", "Love Is All You Need", and "Save It For A Rainy Day". Rick JamesBustin Out Of L Seven ... LP
Gordy, 1979. Very Good ... $3.99
Think what you might about Rick James, this is actually a pretty darn funky album – with lots of tight bass-heavy grooves! Rick's working here with the Stone City Band, in a style that's leaner and less commercial than some of his later work – going for a mainstream funk approach, but still leaving enough roughness around the edge to make the album appealing to our ears. In a way, the sound here is kind of a tightening up of Fantasy Records funk, given a few P-Funk twists – slick, but never too slick to groove soulfully! Titles include "Bustin Out", "Love Interlude", "High On Your Love Suite", "Spacey Love", "Cop N Blow", and "Fool On The Street". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch, some wear on the bottom.)

Gordy, 1983. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Another stone winner from Rick James' early 80s run for Motown – a set that follows strongly on territory opened up by previous records – especially that bass-heavy approach to funk! The record's maybe not as stone classic as others, but still is way tighter and more put-together than most of the James imitators of the time – and features some nice moments that include the very groovy title cut, the mellow "Ebony Eyes" duet with Smokey Robinson, and even a guest appearance from Grandmaster Flash. Titles include "Cold Blooded", "Ebony Eyes", "Pimp The Simp", "U Bring The Freak Out", "Doin' It", "Unity" and "123 (U Her & Me)". LP, Vinyl record album

Gordy, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Rick James' first LP for Motown subsidiary Gordy, that was to provide the blueprint for his later success. James' trademark pop bass funk style is fully formed on this one already, and though we may once have thought little of the slick production and style, looking back this stuff has a good bit more substance than some of the other commercial R & B of the day. "Mary Jane" & "You & I" were the 2 big hits of this album, which also includes "Be My Lady", "Hollywood" & "Sexy Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rick JamesFire It Up ... LP
Gordy, 1979. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Rick James fires it up at the end of the 70s – stepping out at full star power that has him rivaling the strength of Bootsy Collins at Warner, and paving the way for the rise of Prince in the early 80s! As with Prince, James' version of funk here is a bit offbeat – lots of riffing guitars in the mix, and a bad-strutting groove that's still conventional mainstream funk of the time, yet with some edgier elements that led Rick to label his music as "punk funk" (or was it "funk punk"?) Given the end-of-70s spirit, you might also say that some of the cuts were aimed at the dancefloor – although James was never really one to storm the discos as much as others. Titles include "Love Gun", "Fire It Up", "Come Into My Life", "Lovin You Is A Pleasure", and "Stormy Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rick JamesStreet Songs ... LP
Gordy, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses! Gordy, 1982. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Rick James is massively throwing down on this classic set – tight, right, and on the money all the way through – in that trademark groove that so many others would try to cop, but never get this right! The album bristles with energy right from the start – lots of bass at the bottom of the grooves, riffing guitar in the middle, and those badass vocals of James' that mange to sound nasty even when they're sweet! But if you know Rick, you know that sweetness isn't the aim here – and the album drips with party sex all the way through – over funk classics that include "Standing On The Top", "Teardrops", "Money Talks", "Throwdown", "Hard To Get", "69 Times" and "Dance Wit Me". A stone classic from Teena Marie – one of her magical self-produced efforts for Motown! The record's a winner all the way through – with a depth to the vocals and backings that are steeped in the 70s styles of Minnie Riperton and Chaka Khan. A few tracks get a bit upbeat funky, but overall, it's the mellow ones we like the best. Titles include "I Need Your Lovin", "Young Love", "First Class Love", "Irons In The Fire", "Chains", "You Make Love Like Springtime", and "Tune In Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Teena MarieIt Must Be Magic ... LP
Gordy, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest album that Teena Marie ever cut – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of the lady's work for Motown! The set's got this bright, positive bounce that grabs you right from the start – but also moves into a depth that's way different than other funk albums of the time – a way with a ballad and a thoughtful track that almost makes Marie the 80s heir to the Minnie Riperton legacy, especially given the strength of her voice on the set – and the fact that Teena wrote and produced the whole album herself! At a time when so many other female soul singers were at the mercy of other folks' talents and ideas, Lady T steps forth boldly with this classic set – brimming over with greatness on cuts that include the stellar "Portuguese Love", plus "Yes Indeed", "Where's California", "Opus III", "Square Biz", "365", "Revolution", and "Ballad Of Cradle Rob & Me". Martha Reeves & The VandellasBlack Magic ... LP
Gordy, 1972. Very Good+ ... $18.99
One of our favorite albums ever from Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – a set that's way past their early overheard hits for Motown, and which shows the group really stretching out with a new sort of power! There's definitely a bit of Black Magic in the mix – as there's a fresh feel here that really shows the changes Motown was making at the start of the 70s – with some echoes of the style used with the Jackson 5 – no surprise, given that the album's genius track "Bless You", was written by The Corporation! That track is worth the price of the album alone – and has this incredible wall of sound arrangement, with Martha singing verse after verse about the religiosity of love. But other tracks are great too – and include "No One There", "I Want You Back", "Hope I Don't Get My Heart Broke", and "Tear It On Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderfully romping grooves from one of Motown's first great groups – a stunning set of tracks that really put The Vandellas on the map! The title cut's one of those stormers that played for years on both sides of the Atlantic – and was a key inspiration to the UK soul scene too – but the whole album's mighty nice too, and has this mix of full soul backings and clearly classy vocals that never lets up for a minute. The trio can really take on a great range of material – from Detroit floorfillers to some more uptown cuts, but still done with a nice Holland-Dozier Motown punch. In addition to "Heat Wave", other cuts include "Mocking Bird", "My Boyfriend's Back", "Just One Look", "Hello Stranger", "Hey There Lonely Boy", and "Then He Kissed Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Socking soul, and a key album in the career of Detroit powerhouse Edwin Starr – one that had him stepping forth with a proud, loud groove all the way through! Starr's work was always a bit harder than the regular Motown bag – no doubts because of his more indie soul roots – and on this set, Edwin comes clean with a punched-up style that's heard to famous effect on the anthemic title hit "25 Miles", and which is nicely followed up by a great batch of tracks that includes "Gonna Keep on Tryin", "You Beat Me To The Punch", "Soul City", "Strugglin' Man", "Mighty Good Lovin", and "Backyard Lovin Man". A mod soul classic from the great Edwin Starr – a set that bridges his years in the Detroit underground and his sudden rise to fame at Motown! The tracks here have a really deep basement grooving sort of vibe – catchy, but less poppy than the usual Motown – and more with the kind of grit you'd find on some of the smaller indies of the time – not just in Edwin's vocals, but in the overall rhythms as well! There's loads of dancefloor soul cuts here, mixed with some overlooked gems – and the whole thing's wonderful, especially if you only know Edwin's later hits. Gordy, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real breakout album for Edwin Starr – and the kind of full-on set that really helped give his music a bold new focus! Starr had already scored nicely on some playful tracks from the Motor City scene of the late 60s – but here, he emerges as a singer with a lot more depth than before – not only on the righteous tunes, like the classic title track – but also on some of the warmer ones too, which showcase a new adult style of singing we might not have expected a few years before! Unlike other Motown efforts of this level, there doesn't seem to be any core arranger and producer – which means that Edwin himself did an even greater job of pulling the whole thing together – a great run of tracks that includes the classic "War (What Is It Good For)", a killer version of "California Soul", one of the best Motown-penned tracks from the time – and the tracks "Time", "I Just Wanted To Cry", "All Around The World", "At Last I Found A Love", "I Can't Replace My Old Love", and "She Should Have Been Home". Gordy, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Although Edwin's always best known for the hard soul of hits like "War" or "25 Miles", this record takes off in a whole new direction – pairing Starr with the groovy (and little-known) female singer Blinky – in a set of duets that clearly take off from the Marvin Gaye female duet style of the 60s, but which also has a warmer 70s glow overall. Edwin and Blinky manage to hit a space that's much hipper than the area charted by Marvin and Tammi, and the record has kind of a cool sing-songy soul style, almost in the vein of Friends of Distinction at times. Production is by Frank Wilson, and titles include "Can't We Be Strangers Again", "I'll Understand", "Oh How Happy", and "I'm Glad You Belong To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Titles include the huge hit "Smiling Faces Sometimes", plus lots of covers of cool tracks like "California Soul", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Ball Of Confusion", and "You Got The Love I Need". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes Motown inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch. The back cover has a touch of waviness and faint staining.)

Gordy, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff! Arguably Leon Ware's greatest record – and one of the greatest Motown records of the 70's! The record is a beautiful set of interwoven mellow soul tracks, recorded right on the heels of Marvin Gaye's I Want You album, which was written and conceived by Ware, then taken at the last minute by Marvin! For this set, Ware creates a very similar sound – mixing together smooth keyboards with subtle bits of funk and electronics, all wrapped up in his own sweet warm vocals, which sound better here than on any other album. The whole thing's filled with loads of beautiful tracks, including "French Waltz", "Journey Into You", "Phantom Lover", and the great "Turn Out the Light", written with Minnie Riperton. ✨✧ Marvin GayeHere, My Dear ... LP
Motown, 1978. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original gatefold pressing. Cover has some edge wear.)

Tamla, 1962. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A stunning early album from one of Motown's first great groups – served up here in a cover that's as graphically intense as the music within! The record's got a great mix of older sad-tinged vocal styles with some of the new pride and power the Marvelettes helped unlock at Motown – a great mix of modes that really gives the album a rock-solid quality all the way through – thanks also to a whole host of great compositions by Berry Gordy and the Holland/Dozier/Holland team! Titles include "Playboy", "Someday, Someday", "Goddess Of Love", "You Should Know", and "I'm Hooked". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonnie PointerBonnie Pointer (1978) ... LP
Motown, 1978. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A great Motown set from the 70s – a record that grooves with the new styles the label was exploring at the time, yet still has a rock-solid quality that links back to its 60s heritage too! The main strength here comes from Bonnie Pointer – whose vocals have an instantly classic sound that really fits the grooves – but the record also has killer help from top to bottom, too – including production from Berry Gordy and Jefrey Bowen, songs penned by Bowen, Smokey Robinson, Angelo Bond, Lamont Dozier, and Truman Thomas, and top-shelf help from California Motown studio giants. Titles include "When I'm Gone", "Free Me From My Freedom/Tie Me To A Tree", "Heaven Must Have Sent You", "Ah Shoot", "I Wanna Make It", and "My Everything". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing, with 5:14 duration on "Heaven Must Have Sent You". Cover has minimal wear.)

✨✧ David RuffinMy Whole World Ended ... LP
Motown, 1969. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great start as a solo act for the legendary David Ruffin – stepping out here from The Temptations with a wonderfully heartbreaking style! The title of the record really sums up the feel of the set – a sense of desperation that really comes through in Ruffin's raspy vocals – with an edge that was already great in his previous group, but which really soars here amidst a range of Motown settings from Harvey Fuqua, Johnny Briston, Ivy Jo Hunter, and George Gordy. Some of the previous Temps baroque-soul elements create a complexity in the orchestrations – which David cuts through in this personal, powerful way – on titles that include "My Whole World Ended", "Pieces Of A Man", "Everlasting Love", "My Love Is Growing Stronger", "We'll Have A Good Thing Going On", and "World Of Darkness".
