✨✧ Luther AllisonBad News Is Coming (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gordy/Universal, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not a bad bit of funky blues, and a very strange record to appear on Motown! The production style and presentation are very rootsy – right down to the photo of Luther on the front cover, who's smoking a cigarette, but trying to pretend it's a joint! The style is electric blues of the Chicago school, but given a bit more of a country funk kind of sound. Titles include "Bad News Is Coming", "Dust My Broom", "Evil Is Going On", "Rock Me Baby", and "Ragged & Dirty", which actually has some very nice drums! (Blues, Soul) CD

✨✧ Dennis EdwardsDon't Look Any Further (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gordy/Universal (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dennis Edwards made some great music with The Temptations – but a record like this is key proof that he was maybe even stronger as a solo act on his own! There's a mature 80s vibe to the whole record – one that comes from the commandingly strong, soulful style that Edwards perfected with his previous group – a depth that never gets lost in the 80s production, weather quiet storm mellow or upbeat and catchy – really well formed all the way through, thanks to work from producer Dennis Lambert. Siedah Garrett duets with Edwards on the mellow groover "Don't Look Any Further" – and other tracks include "(You're My) Aphrodisiac", "Another Place In Time", "I Thought I Could Handle It", and "Just Like You". CD also features bonus tracks – "Don't Look Any Further (ext 12" mix)", "Don't Look Any Further (12" inst)", "Don't Look Any Further (12" inst)", and "You're My Aphrodisiac (single version)". CD

✨✧ Rick JamesGarden Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gordy/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Rick James' classic early run for Motown – a set that maybe didn't chart as big as some of his other records for the label, but which stands strongly today as a well-crafted batch of mellow funky soul! James has a bit less of the bass-heavy riffs here than you'd expect – and instead, the record has kind of a laidback, almost dreamy feel at times – still upbeat, but with the kind of relaxed, glowing vibe you'd be more likely to find from Teena Marie around this point – a really nice contrast with the more familiar hit sounds you'd know from Rick! We actually really like these mellower groovers – which are almost like some of Johnny Watson's Caribbean-tinged grooves – and the production augments the tunes with a bit of sound effects, which really furthers the paradise garden feel of the tunes. Titles include "Mary Go Round", "Summer Love", "Big Time", "Don't Give Up On Love", "Getting It On In The Sunshine", and "Island Lady". CD features a previously unreleased demo of "Gypsy Girl", and a previously unreleased extended version of "Big Time". CD

✨✧ Edwin StarrSoul Master (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gordy/Big Break (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mod soul classic from the great Edwin Starr – a set that bridges his years in the Detroit underground and his sudden rise to fame at Motown! The tracks here have a really deep basement grooving sort of vibe – catchy, but less poppy than the usual Motown – and more with the kind of grit you'd find on some of the smaller indies of the time – not just in Edwin's vocals, but in the overall rhythms as well! There's loads of dancefloor soul cuts here, mixed with some overlooked gems – and the whole thing's wonderful, especially if you only know Edwin's later hits. Titles include "Agent Double O Soul", "I Am The Man For You Baby", "Stop Her On Sight", "I Want My Baby Back", "Soul Master", "Headline News", and "My Weakness Is You". CD features loads of bonus tracks – 17 additional songs – singles that include "Girls Are Getting Prettier", "Harlem", "My Kind Of Woman", and "Gonna Keep On Tryin Til I Win Your Love" – plus alternate and single mixes of album tracks! ✨✧ SwitchSwitch ... CD
Gordy/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal bit of seventies soul from Switch, and a record that really helped set the tone for countless others to come in the 80s – no surprise, given that the group's got members from both the DeBarge and Ingram families! There's a warmth here that few others can match – an earnest, honest quality that never gets lost, even amidst the well-crafted instrumentation and tight production of the record – almost an updated legacy of the early 70s east coast scene, but never polished up too much at all! There's some wonderful harmonies that work perfectly on both the upbeat and mellower numbers – warming things up beautifully on titles that include "It's So Real", "I Wanna Be With You", "I Wanna Be Closer", "You Pulled A Switch", and "There'll Never Be". TemptationsAll Directions ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1972. Used ... $16.99
The Temptations going in all directions – and all of them pretty darn groovy too! The set's still heavy on the solid, righteous sound of Norman Whitfield – who gives some of the best cuts that psychedelic soul imprint he really perfected with the group – a quality that has a lot more funk than other Motown acts were getting at the time – yet still lets the harmonies soar! A few other numbers showcase a more mature ballad style – different than the sweet soul of their roots, and definitely with an adult vibe we really love. Titles include heavy funk on "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On", and their great cover of Isaac Hayes "Do Your Thing" – some mellow mature covers like "Love Woke Me Up This Morning" and "First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" – plus the long version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and the tracks "Mother Nature" and "Run Charlie Run". ✨✧ TemptationsLive At The Copa/With A Lot O' Soul ... CD
Motown/Gordy, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 classics by the Temps – back to back on one 25 track CD! Live At The Copa is typical of one side of live 60s Motown – as Berry Gordy was always trying to give his soul acts a bit of "class" – sending them to London or Paris, or having them play at sophisticated nite spots like The Copacabana, a far cry from the Chittlin Circuit venues that most of America's soul acts were stuck in. However, apart from a kind of painful version of "Swanee", most of the music on the record's still pretty strong, and the album's a good indication of how strongly the Temps could absorb styles and adapt to their audience. Titles include "Get Ready", "You're My Everything", "I Wish it Would Rain", "Please Return Your Love To Me", "The Impossible Dream", and "I'm Losing You". With A Lot O Soul was recorded slightly before the group's baroque psychedelic soul stuff – but with a heavy fuzzy approach that's very similar, and which gives the band a nice raw soulful sound missing from some of their earlier albums. Loads and loads of great tracks from the Jobete stable – like "I Know I'm Losing You", "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone", "No More Water In The Well", and "You're My Everything". CD

✨✧ TemptationsPsychedelic Shack ... CD
Gordy/Motown, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A late 60s Motown classic – with a deep heavy soul sound that mixed psychedelic elements into a rolling righteous groove – with a style that was perfect for the political tenor of the times! The formula worked extremely well for The Temps, and shifted them from being just a regular Motown vocal group into a super soul power that shaped soul music heavily in the next few years. Of course, a good deal of the credit goes to producer Norman Whitfield – who's really in his element on the set, and gives the group a sublime blend of heavy bass, fuzzy guitar, and tripped-out production on the vocals. Includes the classic "Psychedelic Shack", plus "Friendship Train", "Take A Stroll Thru Your Mind", "Hum Along And Dance", and "It's Summer". CD
(Out of print early Motown pressing.)

✨✧ TemptationsReunion ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An all-star effort from The Temptations – and a well-titled set that has the group brimming over with classic vocal talent! The group's expanded to a seven-piece outfit for the album – with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin back in the fold, singing alongside Dennis Edwards, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and the rest of the group! Motown also culled together some top-shelf production talent for the set too – including Berry Gordy, Rick James, Barrett Strong, and Smokey Robinson – all of whom produce numbers for the record. Some of the tracks are in an 80s groove modes, and others are mellower ballads that offer plenty of space for vocal interplay – and titles include "I've Never Been To Me", "Backstage", "More On The Inside", "Standing On The Top", "Lock It In The Pocket", and "You Better Beware". ✨✧ TemptationsTemptations Live! (with bonus track) ... CD
Gordy, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Motown live albums of the 60s – a really wonderful set from The Temptations, and one that explodes with even more energy than their studio sides of the time! The recording quality is great – in a way that really brings an edge to the music, and seems to sharpen the group's harmonies even more. There's still a Motown sound in the backings, but the live presentation shows just how much power the group had on their own without any heavier arrangements or production – and the crowd response indicates that the audience certainly feels the same way! Titles include "What Love Has Joined Together", "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep", "I Wish You Love", "Get Ready", "You'll Lose A Precious Love", "Don't Look Back", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", and a medley that includes "I'll Be In Trouble". CD also features a bonus track – "The Way You Do The Things You Do". CD

TemptationsTruly For You ... CD
Gordy/PTG (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A great 80s set from The Temptations – one of the few Motown acts who managed to deliver great work again and again over the years! The production has some 80s traces that are slightly dated, but the vocals are still top-shelf all the way – strongly moved much more into a mellow and modern mode than the group's righteous 70s years, but still plenty darn soulful for our ears – and proof that no matter what the lineup, or the setting, The Temptations could always come out with some top-shelf work! The record's got a nicely balanced feel that most younger groups of the time would have done well to consider – and titles include "Running", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "My Love Is True", "Set Your Love Right", "I'll Keep My Light In The Window", and "Memories". ✨✧ TemptationsWish It Would Rain ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal moment for The Temptations – a set that has the group hitting even more of a deep soul sound than before – at a level that really sets them apart from some of the other groups on Motown at the time! There's a richer, fuller sound going on here – as the group work with producer Norman Whitfield in a style that's not entirely psychedelic soul, but instead places a strong focus on the emotional power of their harmonies! Tracks are shorter than some of the funky Temps jams, but they pack a hell of a lot in a very small space – as the lyrics bristle with open, honest emotion throughout. Titles include the perennial classic "I Wish It Would Rain" – a song that opens up a whole new level of emotional depth – plus "I Truly Truly Believe", "Why Did You Leave Me Darling", "No Man Can Love Her Like I Do", "Fan The Flame", and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". ✨✧ Marvin GayeHere, My Dear (expanded 2CD edition) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together". Expanded CD features the famous 12" instrumental version of "A Funky Space Reincarnation" – plus a full set of 12 bonus alternate mixes produced by the likes of Mocean Worker, Easy Mo Bee, Leon Ware, Marcus Miller, Prince Paul, Bootsy Collins, Slaam Remi, and The Randy Watson Experience – including "Anger (alt extended)", "Here My Dear (alt mix)", "Time To Get It Together (alt extended mix)", "Falling In Love Again (alt version)", "I Met A Little Girl (alt version)", "Sparrow (alt version)", and "Anna's Song (inst – alt version)".
