✨✧ FiestaFiesta ... LP
Arista, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the great lost funky soul records on Arista from the late 70's, and an album that hardly ever seems to come our way anymore. The tracks are a mix of slower group cuts and more up-tempo ones, with a feel that's similar to some of the east coast male groups from the early and mid 70s that recorded for labels like Buddah. Our favorite ones are the mellow soul tracks, like "Thanks For The Sweet Memories", "Baby If You Love Me", and "One More Chance", which have a nice 70s groove to them. Also with the minor hit "ESP". ✨✧ Dave Baby CortezHappy Organs, Wild Guitars, & Piano Shuffles ... CD
Clock/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stomping organ instrumentals from Dave Baby Cortez – early singles done for the Clock label at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – all of which helped to really find a place for the organ in American pop and soul! Cortez brought a style to the instrument that was as wild as some of the guitarists and saxophonists of his time – a mode that wasn't really jazz, was a bit R&B, and which helped give the organ a much leaner sound than some of its "skating rink" uses in pop during the decade before. Dave's clean style is a great fit for the jaunty, leaping rhythms of these tunes – and other instrumentation includes tenor, guitar, and even a bit of piano, which is featured on a few tracks instead of organ. CD features 25 tracks in all – with titles that include "Piano Shuffle", "The Happy Organ", "Cat Nip", "Hey Hey Hey", "Mari Gras", "Fiesta", "Love Me As I Love you", "The Whistling Organ", "Do The Slop", "You're Just Right", "Riffin", "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "Dave's Special", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "Hurricane". ✨✧ Rodney FranklinSkydance ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great example of why we always reach for our Rodney Franklin records time and time again over the years – as there's few other players who could serve up a blend of soul and jazz this well! The album's got a great balance of electric and acoustic, that instantly-warm style that Franklin virtually invented on these classic Columbia recordings – with plenty of care to avoid falling into fusion cliches that were either too jamming, or too clunkily commercial. Rodney plays a host of keys himself – including Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano – and the set features some nice lead vocals from Darryl Coley and Phyllis St James – but also gives plenty of space for instrumental focus, with some tracks that are longer than usual for Franklin. Titles include the gentle stepper "One From The Heart", plus "Fiesta", "Destiny", "Song For You", "Skydance", and "Children". (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ Senor SoulWhat It Is Y'all – Best Of Senor Soul ... CD
BGP/Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Enough funk to stop a truck – and a rare collection of tracks made by Senor Soul, a heavy-hitting LA group from the 60s – and the precursor to War! The tunes on the set are pulled from the group's sessions for the Whiz and Double Shot labels, plus a few previously unissued tracks – and the sound is completely sublime for fans who like their funk hard, heavy, and instrumental! Beats are rough, bass is fierce, and there's a good smattering of some Latinized elements – like percussion, flute, and tasy guitar. A few tracks have vocals, but the overall feel is mostly instrumental – and together, the tracks make the set feel like you've just stumbled upon a whole box of rare funky 45s sitting in the basement of a shop on Central Ave! 20 tracks in all – including "The Mouse", "Soul Fiesta", "Make The Funk Jump", "El Loco", "I Dig Rock & Roll Music", "I Ain't Got No Soul Today (What It Is, Y'All)", "Get On Up", "Hypnotizer", "The Sneak", "Poquito Soul", and "Don't Lay Your Funky Trip On Me". VariousBirth Of Soul Vol 4 – Late 50s To Early 60s Black Music That Heralded The Soul Explosion ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s! A number of the artists here are familiar from R&B years, but they're represented by tracks that show a real change in their styles – and others are known from later successes, but stand out here with early work that's a lot more formative – making them a perfect choice for the collection. CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Come On & Stomp" by Marv Johnson, "Lil Valley" by The MMs & The Peanuts, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Irresistible You" by Bobby Peterson, "Take Your Heart" by Betty Willis, "Puff" by Kenny Lynch, "Jack Be Nimble" by The Intruders, "A Clock That's Got No Hands" by Della Reese, "I Came Running" by Wade Flemons, "You'd Be Crying Too" by The Matadors, "The Gypsy Said" by The Fiestas, "Please Don't Cry Anymore" by Ketty Lester, "Pretty Little Girl Next Door" by Bobby Day, and "Trouble I've Had" by Clarence Ashe. VariousDe-Liteful & Soulful – Mellow Mover ... CD
De-Lite/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A really rare side of the legendary De-Lite Records – served up here in a range of obscure 45s before the company exploded into bigger fame with the success of Kool & The Gang! The work here puts De-Lite right on the same level as important indies on the east coast at the turn of the 70s – and shows an especially strong ability to capture the best group styles of the period – from the sublime harmony styles being crafted in New Jersey and Philly, to some of the growing funky styles in the pre-disco years! The set's a much-needed look at this early part of the label – and also features titles on the related Red Coach label too – in a wonderful package of 25 tracks that includes "I'll Never Let You Get Away" by Universal Mind, "So Long Sweet Little Girl" by Reggie Saddler Revue, "I'm At The Breaking Point" by The Trumains, "Girl (part 1)" by Philadelphia Ambassadors, "Gotta Let Some Sunshine Into My Life" by The Exceptionals, "I'll Always Love You" by The New Cymbals, "So Fine" by The Fiestas, "The Story Of Our Love" by The Carstairs, "Love You Can't Shake It" by Reggie Saddler & The Jammers, "Nothing In The World" by The Electras, "Back On The Road Again" by Richmond International, and "Love Foundation" by Electrified Action. ✨✧ VariousDoo Wop Soda Shop – Atmospheric & Romantic Harmony Sounds From The 50s & 60s ... CD
Croydon Municipal (UK), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really unique set of doo wop tracks from the classic years – one that has a slightly different format than some of the others on the market, as you might guess from the cover! These tunes are definitely sweet, but never too pop overall – and the titles all come from an extremely well-chosen batch of singles from a variety of labels and scenes – all to portray that special heartbreaking sound of early group soul – the sort that might well have been the biggest contribution that doo wop made to the legacy of harmony. The cuts on the set often have a slow-stepping, late nite feel – a moody vibe that often tells the tale of love found and love lost, but with vocal inflections that make each of these numbers a special standout on their own. There's 24 whopping tracks in all – with great sound, label scans, and titles that include "Remember" by Dennis & The Explorers, "Looking For You" by The Dukes, "For Your Love" by The Wanderers, "Along My Lonely Way" by The Utopians, "This Paradise" by The Bel-Aires, "Last Night I Dreamed" by The Fiestas, "The Night Is Quiet" by The Vocaleers, "Be Mine" by The Uptones, "Lonely One" by The Ravels, "Baby Be Mine" by The Melo Gents, and "Flames" by The Reminiscents.
