One of the great lost funky soul records on Arista from the late 70's, and an album that hardly ever seems to come our way anymore. The tracks are a mix of slower group cuts and more up-tempo ones, with a feel that's similar to some of the east coast male groups from the early and mid 70s that recorded for labels like Buddah. Our favorite ones are the mellow soul tracks, like "Thanks For The Sweet Memories", "Baby If You Love Me", and "One More Chance", which have a nice 70s groove to them. Also with the minor hit "ESP". Stomping organ instrumentals from Dave Baby Cortez – early singles done for the Clock label at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – all of which helped to really find a place for the organ in American pop and soul! Cortez brought a style to the instrument that was as wild as some of the guitarists and saxophonists of his time – a mode that wasn't really jazz, was a bit R&B, and which helped give the organ a much leaner sound than some of its "skating rink" uses in pop during the decade before. Dave's clean style is a great fit for the jaunty, leaping rhythms of these tunes – and other instrumentation includes tenor, guitar, and even a bit of piano, which is featured on a few tracks instead of organ. A great example of why we always reach for our Rodney Franklin records time and time again over the years – as there's few other players who could serve up a blend of soul and jazz this well! The album's got a great balance of electric and acoustic, that instantly-warm style that Franklin virtually invented on these classic Columbia recordings – with plenty of care to avoid falling into fusion cliches that were either too jamming, or too clunkily commercial. Rodney plays a host of keys himself – including Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano – and the set features some nice lead vocals from Darryl Coley and Phyllis St James – but also gives plenty of space for instrumental focus, with some tracks that are longer than usual for Franklin. Enough funk to stop a truck – and a rare collection of tracks made by Senor Soul, a heavy-hitting LA group from the 60s – and the precursor to War! The tunes on the set are pulled from the group's sessions for the Whiz and Double Shot labels, plus a few previously unissued tracks – and the sound is completely sublime for fans who like their funk hard, heavy, and instrumental! Beats are rough, bass is fierce, and there's a good smattering of some Latinized elements – like percussion, flute, and tasy guitar. This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! A really rare side of the legendary De-Lite Records – served up here in a range of obscure 45s before the company exploded into bigger fame with the success of Kool & The Gang! A really unique set of doo wop tracks from the classic years – one that has a slightly different format than some of the others on the market, as you might guess from the cover! These tunes are definitely sweet, but never too pop overall – and the titles all come from an extremely well-chosen batch of singles from a variety of labels and scenes – all to portray that special heartbreaking sound of early group soul – the sort that might well have been the biggest contribution that doo wop made to the legacy of harmony. The cuts on the set often have a slow-stepping, late nite feel – a moody vibe that often tells the tale of love found and love lost, but with vocal inflections that make each of these numbers a special standout on their own.
