Disco Space Funk BandJourney Through The Night ... CD
Baby Grand/Everland (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
A sweet little record that's way better than you might ever guess from the title – almost more of a jazz funk effort overall, with excellent work on guitar, trumpet, saxes, and keyboards! There's vocals on the album, but maybe more in a backup sort of way – and although the cuts could work on a dancefloor, they've often got the mix of jazz and groove that you'd find in some of the funkier Kudu Records material of the time – which might have been an inspiration for these guys! The album was recorded on the Atlanta scene of the late 70s, with lead guitar from Gary Ruffin – and titles include "Get Up & Get Down", "Summer Love", "Randy's Nap", "Simple Song", and "Journey Through The Night". Kelenkye BandMoving World ... LP
Emporium/Everland (Austria), 1974. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A wicked bit of funk from Ghana – a record that's as amazing and wonderful as it is rare! The set's one of the best African 70s rarities we've ever heard – filled with massive grooves that offer up a take on funk that's far different than American grooves – but which also comes across with instrumentation that's not as familiarly Ghanian either! There's lots of nicely fuzzy organ in the mix, tight rhythms, and a trippy production style that no doubt comes from the quality of the original studio – but which serves to give some of the best cuts a really sinister edge – a bit like Cymande at their best. Titles include "Dracular Dance", "No Man Is Born To Suffer", "Moving World", "Groovy Love", "Wale Fobite", "Kelenkye Beat", and "Jungle Music". (Global Grooves, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

ObatalaObatala ... CD
Everland/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
The cover looks like a lost metal album, but the sound here is plenty soulful – recorded in a New Jersey studio in the 70s, and served up for a brief release at the time by TK Records! There's a clubby vibe at times, which lives up to the TK approach – but other moments have a much deeper east coast soul style – maybe more like some of the Stang/All Platinum groups of that scene, who did a great job of messing up modes, and really creating something unusual in the process! In other words, there's some disco tunes on here, but the album's hardly the usual disco outing – more of a freaky funk set, with lots of twists and turns along the way! Titles include "Work It Out", "Funk A Fried", "April", "Shades Of September", "Disco Party", and "Tight Rope". CD

Street FeetStreet Feet ... CD
Baby Grand/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
The street feet here are pretty funky ones – maybe more so than you'd guess from the relatively "stock" look of the cover image – as the album's got the kind of sharp instrumental core that you'd be likely to find on some of the best Bay Area groovers from late 70s Fantasy Records! The record's mostly instrumental, and has excellent guitar, keyboards, and strong coloring from the Doo-Ragg Horns – almost a west coast equivalent of Memphis or Muscle Shoals Horns, but with an even leaner groove overall. Kumunnukate sings a bit on the record, but most is instrumental – and titles include "Help Yourself", "Satisfied Sity", "The Search Goes On", "Holdin On", "Livin It Up", and "The Hassle". CD

✨✧ Jack AshfordHotel Sheet ... CD
Magic Disc/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. The title cut "Hotel Sheet" has this wonderful popping moogy sound that's very nice – and other tracks include "Funky Disco Party", "Shar", "Hi Mom, Hi Al", and "Get Right On Top". CD

✨✧ Ghetto BrothersPower/Fuerza ... CD
Salsa International/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary record from one of the most unique Latin groups of their time! In an early 70s world where many Latin combos were going for class and poise, the Ghetto Brothers moved in another direction entirely – working here with a fair bit of electric guitar alongside more familiar Latin rhythms – all to push along some wonderfully soulful vocals! The record's got a very different feel than most east coast Latin work of the time – one that's a bit like some of the Chicano soul of the west coast, but not nearly as smooth, and with a definite nod towards both funk and singer/songwriter work of the mainstream! The guitar's really upfront in the mix – riffing off at the start of most tracks – and the vocals have a slightly sweet quality, supported by harmonies from the rest of the group at times – making for a wicked blend of modes that's extremely compelling. A record that's as filled with soul and feeling as it is with hard-edge groovers – featuring titles that include "You Say You Are My Friend", "Ghetto Brothers Power", "I Saw A Tear", "Girl From The Mountain", "There Is Something In My Hearth", "Got This Happy Feeling", and "Viva Puerto Rico Libre". ✨✧ ShakeMusic Is The Only Way We Can Communicate ... CD
Guess/Everland (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the great overlooked funk bands of the late 70s Virginia scene – a tight little combo with a warm style that's just right for the dancefloor! The VA groove of the time was a different take on the styles being used up north in Philly and New York – as the groups were often more traditionally funk-based, especially in their instrumentation – but played in a mode that was upbeat and soaring, perfectly suited for the disco-era dancefloor, yet handled with the sincerity of an indie soul group. Shake communicate a heck of a lot in their music – moving through some great original tunes written by producer Lenis Guess, done with some nicely personal touches that maintain the indie spirit of the set, even though the group's overall sound is tightly professional. Titles include "Shake", "Lost In Space", "Try My Love Tonight", "Two People Working Together", "Music Is The Only Way I Can Communicate", "Goodbye My Love Goodbye", and "Misery's Chant/I Was In Love With You". ✨✧ Ruby AndrewsBlack Ruby ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a great record from Ruby Andrews – a Chicago soul singer who started out sweet, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the start of the 70s! The record's got a badass vibe you never would have expected from Andrews a few years before – with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money – and which pack a solid funky punch into nearly every tune! Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings – but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a deep soul style that blows us away every time we hear the record – and we've been listening to this one for more than a few decades. Wonderful all the way through – and with titles that include the funky classic "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", plus "Good N Plenty", "My Love Is Comin Down", "You Ole Boo Boo You", and "Overdose Of Love". ✨✧ Ruby AndrewsEverybody Saw You ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

✨✧ DaytoniansLet Jesus Work It Out ... CD
Church Door/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Daytonians may let Jesus work it out, but they also do a heck of a lot themselves – more than plenty to make the record a rare funky gospel treasure from the 70s! The group hail from Dayton, Ohio, and cut the record in Atlanta – and there's some indication that Calvin Arnold was involved with the whole thing – as there's key funky currents to the music that remind us of the mix of rootsy grit and tightness in his own records, and which sound even better next to the magnificent harmonies of the group! As with the best soul-styled gospel albums of the period, the grooves and production are pretty darn down to earth – meaning that there's plenty here to love even if you're not taken with the spirit – and even more if you are. Titles include "Shelter", "Why Can't I", "Jesus Is Calling", "Deep River", "My Rock", and "I Got Everything". (Gospel, Soul) CD

✨✧ Clydie KingRushing To Meet You ... CD
Tiger Lily/Everland (Austria), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

✨✧ Ronald SnijdersSafe Return ... CD
Ronald Snijders/Everland (Holland), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic funky flute from Ronald Snijders – a European player of the 70s, but one whose work really reminds us a lot of the soulful groove of Bobbi Humphrey at the same time! Like Bobbi, Ronald often has this clear, clean tone on his instrument – as spacious as it is soulful, which makes for a perfect mix with the album's use of keyboards and other electric instrumentation – in a way that's almost a stripped-down version of the jazz funk productions of Larry Mizell! Snijders plays all the instruments himself – using studio magic to craft all the grooves on his own – but the whole thing has the dynamic energy of a soulful jazz combo working together, on titles that include "Surinam Lady", "Lenox", "Kaseko Attack", "Tukayana", "Soweto Friend", and "Djamba". (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ Tutt BandTutt Band ... CD
Everland (Austria), 1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet electro funk from the second half of the 80s – served up here by a group with a vibe that's much more like the indie styles of the start of the genre! The set's heavy on beats, basslines, and keyboards – and even includes some vocoder bits too – all with a lean groove that's pretty darn great throughout – very much in a boogie funk mode, but with some occasional variations that really keep things interesting! Even the slower cuts rely strongly on the beats, but never in a way that's heavy handed – and some warmer keyboard washes even hit at bigger label potential for the group – although we certainly like them more in this indie mode. Titles include "Shake Me", "She's Got It Going", "Can't Let Go", "Procrastinator", "This Time We'll Win", "Get It On", and "We're Gonna Have Fun Tonight". CD
