Billy OceanNights (Feel Like Getting Down) ... CD
Epic, 1981. Used ... $5.99
One of those bright, charismatic Billy Ocean records from a couple years before his massive pop soul crossover – just a sublime 80s club groover that pumps along at a nice mid tempo clip – a real favorite around these parts! This was Billy's debut for Epic and there's plenty of signposts here of his potential to bust out in a big way commercially – it's hooky and insistent, but still plenty soulful, less steeped in pop gloss and with fewer ballads – lean, danceable soul that holds up very, very well. Also includes "Stay The Night", "Are You Ready", "Whatever Turns You On", "Don't Say Stop", "Another Day Won't Matter", and "Taking Chances". CD

The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... LP
Epic, 1975. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". ✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel ... LP
Epic, 1974. Very Good- ... $7.99
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing with Kendun stamp. In original shrinkwrap with a hype sticker.)

Epic, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Smooth and funky fusion from Lee Ritenour – top-shelf all the way, and handled with a really soulful groove, thanks to production from the legendary Skip Drinkwater! Lee's all over the top of the guitar in true "Captain Fingers" style, and Skip makes sure he's got plenty going on underneath, too – with an all-star assemblage of players that includes Harvey Mason on drums, Patrice Rushen on keyboards, Dennis Budimir on guitar, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Ernie Watts on saxes. The keyboards groove as nicely as the guitars (thanks Patrice!), and titles include "Margarita", "Fly By Night", "Dolphin Dreams", "Captain Fingers", and "Sun Song". SadeBest Of Sade ... CD
Epic (Canada), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $4.99
Has there ever been anyone as lovely as Sade? We think not – and from the time she first hit our ears in the 80s, it was the start of an instant love affair that's continued for decades! Sade really brought something new to music at the time – a return to older styles of acoustic and jazz-based instrumentation, at a time when so many soul singers were mostly working with beats, keyboards, and samples – and a breathy voice that was instantly unique, and which kept on captivating us for years of recordings. This best of collection dates from the mid 90s – and provides an excellent sampling of tracks from Sade's albums Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe – titles that include "No Ordinary Love", "Like A Tattoo", "Cherish The Day", "Kiss Of Life", "Your Love Is King", "Hang Onto Your Love", "Sweetest Taboo", "Is It A Crime", and "Nothing Can Come Between Us". Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! (Neo Soul, Soul) CD

Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... CD
Epic, Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". Epic, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". Epic, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $16.99
Hard to find a stronger early album by Sly – as this one has him still funking hard, but also getting his soul bag together a bit more, hitting some really righteous vibes that mix together politics and partying in an incredibly seductive way. The album's filled with anthemic numbers like "Sing A Simple Song", "Stand", "Don't Call Me N_gger Whitey", and "Everyday People" – classic crossover material for the heady crowd of the late 60s – and it also includes a very cool 13 minute track called "Sex Machine", which is a messed-up stoner funk number that shows Sly's ties to the Fillmore freakout scene! ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneThere's A Riot Goin' On ... LP
Epic, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American flag on the cover, the album's strongest suit is its warmth and personal soul message – sometimes filled with politics, sure, but always sounding like a sexy love song, no matter how hard it tries to get righteous. Who cares, though – just get with the flow on great cuts like "Family Affair", "Luv N Haight", "Brave & Strong", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Thank You For Talkin To Me Africa". Also features "There's A Riot Goin' On" – which runs for "0:00" minutes! LP, Vinyl record album

Soul ChildrenWhere Is Your Woman Tonight ... LP
Epic, 1977. Near Mint- ... $6.99
In their post-Stax years, the Soul Children became a trio, and were trying for a smoother group soul sound on the Epic label. Sometimes this meant that the tracks got a little uptempo, in hopes of a crossover hit – but mostly, it meant that they were taking advantage of some of the changing sounds of the south, and turning from a raw soul group into a smoother one. This session features production by David Porter at Malaco studios, with the kind of mellow slightly funky vibe that the studio was perfect at for a few years. A great side chapter to the legendary Mtume run on Epic Records – an album that features his singer Tawatha as the leading act, but still getting full production support from James Mtume and his band! The set's a great twist on the Juicy Fruit groove – a bit more laidback and intimate, but still with all the classy 80s soul elements that Mtume did so well – that great sound schooled in Philly jazz, taken to more modern moments by the time of his Epic years – perfectly put together, but never in a way that's too commercial or cliched! Titles include "Did I Dream You", "Love Goes Higher", "Welcome To My Dream", "Are You Serious", "More Than Before", "The Waiting's Over", "Thigh Ride", and "No More Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Surprisingly nice funky disco work from Joe Tex – still recording here with classic producer Buddy Killen, but using some warmer arrangements from Bergen White, done in a sweet Nashville take on the 70s sound of Philly! The backings are large, with strings over some electric rhythms – but Joe's proud, warm, and raspy vocals still come through beautifully – stepping out with some funky touches on even the mellower cuts, and still keeping a very strong "Gotcha" groove in the mix. Includes the great monologue track "Be Kind To Old People", plus "You Might Be Digging The Garden", "Rub Down", "You Can Be My Star", "Congratulations", "I Know You You Like Your Lovin", "I Gotcha", and "Get Back Leroy". Wild CherryWild Cherry ... CD
Sweet City/Epic, 1976. Used ... $5.99
Wild Cherry may have been one-hit wonders – but MAN, what a hit! At the time of release, "Play That Funky Music" was seen as a joke on the disco movement – but all these many years later, a quick dip into this self-titled album will show you that Wild Cherry were actually the real deal – a funky combo with a hell of a way with a bassline, led by the riffing guitar and weirdly raw vocals of Robert Parissi! In a way, the group feel more like some of those blue-eyed funk combos from global scenes in the period – like Australia, Germany, or South Africa – where it maybe didn't matter so much if you lad a long legacy in indie soul, as long as you could come up with the goods. And sure, the lyrics get a bit silly at times – maybe more lifted from compressed post-glam AM rock than soulful roots – but the overall sound of the set is surprisingly funky, in a way that's maybe stronger than so many other acts who got more respect at the time. Titles include "Play That Funky Music", "Nowhere To Run", "Don't Go Near The Water", "99 1/2", "The Lady Wants Your Money", "What In The Funk Do You See", and "Get It Up". A great moment when compressed AM pop, disco rhythms, and bass heavy funk all collided at once! CD

Epic, 2015. Used ... $2.99
A pretty great project from the Janelle Monae side of the universe – a set that features Janelle on vocals on one track, and also helming the set as executive producer – along with key creative talents Rocket Wonder and Chuck Lightning! The album's got a very unified feel, but is a strongly collaborative effort too – with vocals by Jidenna, Roman Gianarthur, St Beauty, and Kendrick Lamar – as well as Monae – and each track is billed to a different artist, although the set was clearly conceived together as a single project. Stylistically, there are plenty of the sci-fi soul elments you'd find in Janelle's music, mixed with a more straightforward R&B vibe – and a sound that's compellingly catchy all the way through. Epic/FTG, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully mature work from Miami soul legend Betty Wright – one of her overlooked albums recorded for Columbia Records, after big 70s fame at the TK label – and a set that has Betty mixing all her deep soul roots with a tighter, more sophisticated groove! Most of the album was handled by Andre Fischer, of Rufus fame – although Stevie Wonder and Richard Dimples Fields also put together one cut each – and there's a sweet jazzy soul to some of the best numbers that really makes Betty sound great – a mode that's nicely tripping along, with a groove that allows her to really be free and stretch out with her vocals. There's maybe a few moments that echo the late TK years – but go places that those records never would – and titles include "Give A Smile", "I Come to You", "Make Me Love the Rain", "What Are You Going To Do With It", "Body Slang". CD features bonus tracks – "What Are You Going To Do With It (7" version)", "What Are You Going To Do With It (12" version)", "I Believe In You (7" version)", "Body Slang (7" version)", and "Goodbye To You Hello To Me (12" special version)". Soul Junction (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $11.99
A long-overdue look at the mighty mid 60s work of The Falcons – a group who are usually only covered during their early doo wop years, but who went onto do some tremendous group soul as well! The work here features many of the group's excellent recordings for the Big Wheel label with vocalist Sonny Munro in the lead – a really great singer who more than carries on the strong traditions started in the group by earlier singers who include Eddie Floyd and Wilson Pickett! The Big Wheel work is really great – often a bit Northern and upbeat, but with a very deep vocal style overall that's totally great. Added to the set is some additional material that Sonny Munro cut in later years – showing him to be an equally great solo act, working in some more sophisticated modern soul modes – briefly recording for Epic in the 70s, but represented here on some previously unissued tracks from the time. CD also features two tremendous Falcons-backed cuts on Big Wheel with singer Sandy Hollis in the lead – "I'm Tempted" and "Tables Will Turn" – plus the cuts "Good Good Feeling", "Standing On Guard", "Love You Like You Never Been Loved", "I Can't Help It", "Love Love Love", "In Time For The Blues", and "Standing On Guard" by The Falcons – as well as "Don't Leave Me Alone", "On The Other Side Of Pride", "Why Do I Let You Do The Things You Do", and "I'm Tired Of Being Your Play Thing" by Sonny Munro. It does a fine job of touching on the each of the diverse styles Michael handled in his Epic years, the pioneering guitar accented pop soul magic to the more tender numbers, but, the boon for This Is It is the title track. It's a previously unreleased number with backing harmonies by the Jackson's, a fairly gentle and memorable tune, plus some disc 2 demos. Titles include "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "Jam", "They Don't Care About Us", "Human Nature", "Smooth Criminal", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Beat It", "Black Or White", "Earth Song", "Billie Jean", "Man In The Mirror" and "This Is It" (main and orchestra version). Disc 2 includes demos for "She's Out Of My Life", "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" and a "poem" version of "Planet Earth". CD
(2CD set comes packaged in a mini hardcover booklet of photographs from those final rehearsals.)

LabelleSomething Silver ... CD
Warner, Early 70s. Used ... $2.99
An interesting compilation of work by Labelle – in that instead of just dipping into the group's excellent early albums for Warner, it also includes tracks from their years at RCA and Epic. The Warner material is the real highlight here, though – as it shows a side of the group that's rarely remembered in the mainstream, a subtle mix of soul and funk and rock that was a lot hipper than some of their later work, and which was very fitting for the hip LA sound of turn-of-the 70s Warner. Classics from that era include the group's funky classic "Moon Shadow" (sadly edited down to 4 minutes from the original 10), "Time & Love", "Wild Horses", "Touch Me All Over", "Morning Much Better", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Sunday's News", "Shades Of Difference", "If I Can't Have You", and "I Believe That I've Finally Made It Home". Tracks from later include the hit "Lady Marmalade", "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", and "Hollywood". CD

Sly StoneSly Stone – Recorded In San Francisco 1964 to 1967 ... LP
Sculpture, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $9.99
Early stuff by Sly – and pretty nice! The mix of styles is mostly hard soul, a bit jazz, and tiny roots of Sly's later funky style – and the record has a lot of cuts that may not be as great as Sly's Epic recordings, but which would sound pretty darn nice if they were on an obscure 45! Includes the heavy organ number "Rock Dirge", plus "Deck Of Cards", "If You Were Blue", "Life Of Fortune & Fame", "Hi Love", "Watermelon Man", and "Take My Advice". LP, Vinyl record album
