✨✧ Vivian ReedYours Until Tomorrow – The Epic Years ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the early work of Vivian Reed – a singer who got the chance to release a handful of full length albums in the disco generation, but one who sounds even better here right at the start of her career! The beautiful package brings together rare single sides and LP tracks that Vivian cut for Epic Records in the late 60s and early 70s – music that has the vocalist really hitting the full, deep range of her talents – in settings that maybe begin with familiar uptown soul modes, but soon step off into some even more righteous territory! A range of top-shelf talents help Reed out in the studio – as the cuts feature arrangements by Van McCoy, Jimmy Wisner, Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Herb Bernstein – all of whom really find a way to unlock Vivian's vocals and really let them soar. Even the familiar tunes take on a new sort of vibe here – great soulful readings that are quite different than the originals – on titles that include "Missing You", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Don't Close The Door On Me", "I Feel The Earth Move", "Lean On Me", "Mama Open The Door", "Baby Baby", "I", "Yours Until Tomorrow", "I Wanna Be Free", "Look The Other Way", "Down Here On The Ground", "Walk On My Side", and "Then I'll Be Over You". ✨✧ Staple SingersFor What It's Worth – The Complete Epic Recordings 1964 to 1968 (Amen/Pray On/Freedom Highway/Why/For What It's Worth/What The World Needs Now) (3CD set) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! ✨✧ Lou CourtneyI'm In Need Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album of mellow soul tracks! The record is Lou Courtney's masterpiece – and it's a jam-packed set filled with great tracks that rank right up there with classic 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye, Leroy Hutson, or Leon Ware! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. A real dream of an album – and filled with great tracks like "I Will If You Will", "I'm In Need Of Love", "Just To Let Him Break Your Heart", "Somebody New Is Loving On You", and "The Common Broken Heart" – plus with the bonus cuts "Beware" and "Why". ✨✧ George DukeMaster Of The Game ... CD
Epic, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A late 70s classic from jazzy funk master George Duke! Master Of The Game is an excellent mix of jazz, smooth soul, and Latin riffing – really a perfect blend of styles that shows not only how far George's sound had progressed throughout the 70s, it also charts the development of the California scene during the late 70s. George has musical help from Ray Obeido, Roland Bautista, and Sheila E – plus vocals by Lynn Davis, Josie James, and Napoleon Brock. The tracks have a smooth sound that works perfectly with Duke's best keyboard approaches – subduing his tenency to "rock out" a bit, but bringing forward his classic ability to hit a stone mellow groove. Titles include "I Want You For Myself", "Every Little Step I Take", "Look What You Find", "I Love You More", "Dog Man", and "Games". (Jazz, Soul) CD

HeatwaveCandles (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99
Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always catchy on the hooks, and recorded with a nicely flanged style on the vocals – so that they're compressed a bit, and slide nicely in alongside the beats and keys! The mighty Rod Tempterton's still handling a good deal of the arrangements on the set, and some of the backings are orchestrated by Johnny Cameron – almost in a late 70s update of his earlier funky style. Titles include the funky cut "Gangsters Of The Groove", plus "All I Am", "Dreamin You", "Party Suite", "Posin' 'Til Closin'", "Turn Around", and "Where Did I Go Wrong", a sweet little ballad. The Big Break UK remastered edition has a massive 9 bonus tracks – including "Gangsters Of The Groove (Single Version)", "Jitterbuggin' (UK Single Version)", "Where Did I Go Wrong (UK Single Version)", "Posin' 'Til Closin' (UK Single Version)" and other alternate mixes b-sides "Find Someone Like You" and "Wack That Axe". The second album by Heatwave – and a great effort that's almost as perfectly sublime as the first! Despite their UK origin, these guys really give American late 70s soul a run for its money – hitting in a sweetly compressed sound that fuses the vocals, keyboards, and grooves together wonderfully! The album hits equally well on all burners – with some key mellow cuts, and a few funkier upbeat numbers. Titles include loads of classics – like "Mind Blowing Decisions", "Star Of A Story", "Groove Line", "Send Out For Sunshine", and "Leavin For A Dream". CD

Titles include "Boogie Nights", "Always & Forever", "Mind Blowing Decisions", "Gangsters Of The Groove", "Lettin' It Loose", "Look After Love", "Posin' Til Closin", "The Groove Line", and "The Big Guns". HeatwaveToo Hot To Handle ... CD
Epic, 1976. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul stations played album side specials the way that classic rock stations do, side one would be in heavy rotation – as it kicks off with the funky title cut, rolls into the hit "Boogie Nights", cuts to the sample classic "Ain't No Half Steppin" (forever made famous by Big Daddy Kane), and steps into the moody ballad "Always & Forever". It's hard to beat that lineup, but side two does a pretty good job – and includes a similar mix of titles like "Super Soul Sister", "All You Do Is Dial", and "Sho'nuff Must Be Love". CD

T Neck/Epic, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". The third great album in the trilogy that includes Off The Wall and Thriller – and a set that still has Michael Jackson running strong at the height of his solo powers! Michael JacksonInvincible ... CD
Epic, 2001. Used ... $1.99
Well, it turned out that the man himself wasn't invincible – but his music has had surprising durability over the years – to a point where even later material like this sounds pretty darn great over the passing of time! The rhythms and production are more contemporary than some of Jackson's classics, but that also maybe gives the whole thing a crackle that keeps it interesting too – partly because so many of these songs were a bit under-discovered when the set was released. The song titles themselves give some idea of where Jackson's headspace was at during the creation of the album – and tracks include "Invincible", "Break Of Dawn", "Butterflies", "Threatened", "Heaven Can Wait", "2000 Watts", "Cry", "The Lost Children", "Unbreakable", "Heartbreaker", "Whatever Happens", "Privacy", and "Don't Walk Away". Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. Amazing amazing amazing work from the to-be-coronated King Of Pop! ✨✧ Michael JacksonThriller (25th Anniversary standard CD & DVD edition) ... CD
Epic, 1982. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
An expanded version of Thriller – arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely! CD/DVD package features loads of great stuff – CD includes 6 previously unissued bonus tracks, "The Girl Is Mine 2008 (with Will I Am)", "PYT 2008 (with Will I Am)", "Wanna Be Startin Somethin 2008 (with Akon)", "Beat It 2008 (with Fergie)", "Billie Jean 2008 (Kanye West mix)", and "For All Time". A heavy groove and a heady title that points the way towards Michael Jackson's soon-to-be legendary solo career – all served up in a batch of tracks that resonate nicely with the Off The Wall groove! The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The Jacksons at the top of their game – tightly stepping and often highly rhythmic – and striking a great balance between strong lead vocals and some of the sweeter harmonies that got them going in the past. Titles include the sublime groovers "Blame It On The Boogie" and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)", plus great sleepers like "All Night Dancin", "Bless His Soul", "Things I Do For You" and "That's What You Get For Being Polite". A great mix of the talents of Michael Jackson and his famous brothers – and a set that's probably got an equal weight on the focus of both! There's a fair bit of Off The Wall-era Michael that informs this set – the kind of upbeat, grooving tracks that made that record so great – mixed with some newer takes on older Jacksons material, often revamped a bit with a slightly modern soul groove! There's a nice sort of liveness to the record – not as too-polished as you might imagine – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Off The Wall", "Heartbreak Hotel", "She's Out Of My life", "ABC", "I Want You Back", "I'll Be There", "Rock With You", "Working Day & Night", "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", and "Shake Your Body Down To The Ground". One of Michael Jackson's last albums with his famous brothers – a record that was cut in between the two Quincy Jones albums (Off The Wall and Thriller) that would catapult him to megastardom! This set is still an all-Jacksons affair – produced and written by the whole group, and put together with some of those uptempo groovers that both Michael and Jermaine would showcase heavily in their own solo work. The sound's a nice extension of the late 70s Jacksons vibe, peppered with some of Michael's new strengths – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Lovely One", "Your Ways", "Everybody", "This Place Hotel", "Give It Up", and "Wondering Who". Epic, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger. CD

✨✧ Alphonso JohnsonMoonshadows/Yesterday's Dreams/Spellbound ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A great run of records from Alphonso Johnson – the best of his career, wrapped up here in one sweet set! First up is Moonshadows – one of the earliest of bassist Alphonso Johnson's funky fusion albums for Epic! Moonshadows is a nice little set of choppy grooves that recalls the best Herbie Hancock moments of the early 70s, plus some of the side projects of the Headhunters. Warmly funky, but with a nice edge – with a more jazz funk rooted sound than the later, slightly heavier Spellbound! The great group of players includes Patrice Rushen is on keyboards, Benny Maupin on reeds, Lee Ritenour on guitars, Airto Moriera on percussion, Gary Bartz on sax, plus Narada Michael Walden and Ndugu Chancler on drums. Tracks include "Stump", "Cosmoba Place", "Involuntary Bliss", "On The Case", "Amarteifio", "Pandora's Box" and the breezy "Up From The Cellar", which features vocals by Flora Purim! Yesterday's Dreams is a killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha". Spellbound is a soulfully spacey fusion set from Alphonso Johnson – with a really catchy sound! The maestro is working in an eclectic mode that's part Earth, Wind, & Fire, part Return To Forever, and part Alphonze Mouzon/Tommy Bolin jamming. The best moments on the record are the more straight ahead ones – which really flirt with chunky rock sounds on the other side of the rubbery fusion funkiness! Mouzon's working on all kinds of electric sounds on this one – a bunch of custom bass effects, steel drums and more – with Clyde Criner working with a long list of keys and synthesizers, Kevin Shireve on guitar and David Igelfeld on drums and percussion. Titles include "Face Blaster", "Summer Solstice", "Bahama Mama", "Nomads", and Moonlight Conversation" "Feelings Are. . .The Hardest Words To Say" and "Earthtales Suite". (Jazz, Soul) CD

This one's got the group taking the fragile harmony style of their earlier records, and filtering it through the Philly powerhouse groove to create a stronger, more high-stepping sound. The basslines and keyboards reign supreme here – and KC's still got that wonderful ear for just the right sort of midtempo groove – the kind of cuts we always loved on his albums when you got past the hits, and which turn out be a great fit here for his smooth, blue-eyed vocals! Titles include "Stand Up", "Don't Say No", "Baby I'm Yours", "Summer Nights", "Sway", "The Painter", and "It Happens Every Night". An 80s girl group classic from Krystol – the debut album from this tight quartet who really seem to rise to the challenge of the album's polish! Production is quite tight – handled by Leon Sylvers III, and a few others, in that west coast Sylvers mode of the time – but the girls have a way of stepping out with their own sort of feeling – harmonizing, switching leads, and even trading lines that really give us a feel for the character of each member of the group – singers Tina Scott, Roberta Steiger, Karon Floyd, and Dee Marie Warren. There's definitely a vibe here that prefaces lots of other female group soul to come – and titles include "Obsession", "Same Place Same Time", "You're The One For Me", "Nobody's Gonna Get This Lovin But You", "You Ask Too Much", "Acrobat", "After The Dance Is Through", and "Information 411". Lil Louis & The WorldFrom The Mind Of Lil Louis ... CD
Epic, 1989. Used ... $9.99
A classic bit of Chicago house goes mainstream – and a suprisingly big hit from the late 80s. The main reason most folks bought this album was for Louis' "French Kiss", a sex-sound infused house cut with a "fast-then-slow-then-fast" groove that was endlessly dropped into mixes on radio and in clubs at the time. However, like late 80s house contemporaries Blaze, Louis actually turned out to be a pretty interesting soul talent when given a whole album to work with – and although "French Kiss" is on the beat-heavy "dance" side of the album, there's also a pretty interesting "romance" side that has some nice home-made late 80s soul tunes with great warm keyboard-heavy production. Titles include "Lil Tanya", "The Luv U Wanted", "6 AM", and "Brittany". CD

✨✧ Lil' Louis & The WorldJourney With The Lonely ... CD
Epic, 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully well-rounded set from Lil Louis – one of the few early Chicago house artists with enough imagination to break into a wider soul audience and still hold their ears over the course of a full LP! The record's a strongly-crafted batch of tunes that mixes mellow ballads with more house-heavy numbers – all with the sort of organic shifts that Louis virtually pioneered at the time – a move away from simple dancefloor beats into a broader symphony of soul mode that almost evokes earlier maestros of the 70s. The album holds up surprisingly well over the years – thanks to warm production that moves beyond early 90s mainstream soul cliches – and titles include "Club Lonely", "Saved My Life", "You're My Reason", "Dancing In My Sleep", and "New Dance Beat". Teena Marie changes things up a bit for the 90s – picking up a bit more beats than basslines, and almost getting a dose of the syncopated groove that was showing up in work by Sybil and Soul II Soul! No surprise, Jazzie B helps out a bit on the record – although Lady T still handles most of the writing, arranging, and production herself – and the record has a slight undercurrent of higher ideals filtered somewhere down in the mix, showing a bit of a nod towards some of the more empowering themes in soul music that were bubbling up at the time! Epic, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest sets ever from Mother's Finest, and maybe our favorite album from the group's late 70s run on Epic Records! Production is by Skip Scarborough, who brings up some of the group's more soulful currents, but without losing their rocking impulses from before – and singer Joyce Kennedy's never sounded better in the setting! Basslines seem to take more prominence than before – and there's less of the rockish guitar solos – and a few tracks even have those cool, compressed midtempo grooves that Skip could do so well. Titles include "Mr Goodbar", "Tell Me", "Love Changes", "Watch My Stylin", "Can't Fight The Feeling", and "Give It Up". CD

Epic/Sony (Japan), 1980. Used ... $15.99
One of Mtume's sweet mellow soul records for Epic from the early 80's. Like Norman Connors, another soul jazz drummer who decided to go for a smooth soul approach, Mtume has a nice laidback feel on here, with good jazzy production backing up a number of vocal tracks aimed at the modern soul crowd. Hubert Eaves plays some nice mellow keyboards, and Tawatha joins Mtume on vocals. Cuts include "We're Gonna Make It This Time", "So You Wanna Be A Star", "Anticipatin", "Everything Good To Me", and "You Can't Wait For Love". CD

MtumeTheater Of The Mind ... CD
Epic, 1986. Used ... $14.99
A great little album from James Mtume – a bit more complicated and righteous than some of his previous albums on Epic, and with a real mix of styles that works nicely together! The album starts off with "Theme For Theater Of The Mind", a sort of 80s take on the spiritual/political soul jazz sound of the 70s – and a cut that really sets the mood for the album. The record features 80s funk numbers like "I Don't Believe You Heard Me", which is a tribute to James Brown, "New Face Deli", and "POP Generation", which was a bit of a hit. It's also got some great smooth quiet storm numbers – like a remake of Bootsy's "I'd Rather Be With You", and the slinky late night number "Body & Soul (Take Me)". And the extended guitar-jamming "Deep Freeze", which features a "rap-a-song" part! CD

One of those bright, charismatic Billy Ocean records from a couple years before his massive pop soul crossover – just a sublime 80s club groover that pumps along at a nice mid tempo clip – a real favorite around these parts! This was Billy's debut for Epic and there's plenty of signposts here of his potential to bust out in a big way commercially – it's hooky and insistent, but still plenty soulful, less steeped in pop gloss and with fewer ballads – lean, danceable soul that holds up very, very well. Also includes "Stay The Night", "Are You Ready", "Whatever Turns You On", "Don't Say Stop", "Another Day Won't Matter", and "Taking Chances". CD

SadeBest Of Sade ... CD
Epic (Canada), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $4.99
Has there ever been anyone as lovely as Sade? We think not – and from the time she first hit our ears in the 80s, it was the start of an instant love affair that's continued for decades! Sade really brought something new to music at the time – a return to older styles of acoustic and jazz-based instrumentation, at a time when so many soul singers were mostly working with beats, keyboards, and samples – and a breathy voice that was instantly unique, and which kept on captivating us for years of recordings. This best of collection dates from the mid 90s – and provides an excellent sampling of tracks from Sade's albums Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe – titles that include "No Ordinary Love", "Like A Tattoo", "Cherish The Day", "Kiss Of Life", "Your Love Is King", "Hang Onto Your Love", "Sweetest Taboo", "Is It A Crime", and "Nothing Can Come Between Us". One of the better tracks off Sade's Lover's rock, with a mellow vibe that does justice to the title of the LP in the original, and a similarly spacious island inflection on the "Yard mix". Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... CD
Epic, Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". Wild CherryWild Cherry ... CD
Sweet City/Epic, 1976. Used ... $5.99
Wild Cherry may have been one-hit wonders – but MAN, what a hit! At the time of release, "Play That Funky Music" was seen as a joke on the disco movement – but all these many years later, a quick dip into this self-titled album will show you that Wild Cherry were actually the real deal – a funky combo with a hell of a way with a bassline, led by the riffing guitar and weirdly raw vocals of Robert Parissi! In a way, the group feel more like some of those blue-eyed funk combos from global scenes in the period – like Australia, Germany, or South Africa – where it maybe didn't matter so much if you lad a long legacy in indie soul, as long as you could come up with the goods. And sure, the lyrics get a bit silly at times – maybe more lifted from compressed post-glam AM rock than soulful roots – but the overall sound of the set is surprisingly funky, in a way that's maybe stronger than so many other acts who got more respect at the time. Titles include "Play That Funky Music", "Nowhere To Run", "Don't Go Near The Water", "99 1/2", "The Lady Wants Your Money", "What In The Funk Do You See", and "Get It Up". A great moment when compressed AM pop, disco rhythms, and bass heavy funk all collided at once! CD

Wondaland (Janelle Monae)Wondaland Presents The Eephus EP ... CD
Epic, 2015. Used ... $2.99
A pretty great project from the Janelle Monae side of the universe – a set that features Janelle on vocals on one track, and also helming the set as executive producer – along with key creative talents Rocket Wonder and Chuck Lightning! The album's got a very unified feel, but is a strongly collaborative effort too – with vocals by Jidenna, Roman Gianarthur, St Beauty, and Kendrick Lamar – as well as Monae – and each track is billed to a different artist, although the set was clearly conceived together as a single project. Stylistically, there are plenty of the sci-fi soul elments you'd find in Janelle's music, mixed with a more straightforward R&B vibe – and a sound that's compellingly catchy all the way through. Wonderfully mature work from Miami soul legend Betty Wright – one of her overlooked albums recorded for Columbia Records, after big 70s fame at the TK label – and a set that has Betty mixing all her deep soul roots with a tighter, more sophisticated groove! Most of the album was handled by Andre Fischer, of Rufus fame – although Stevie Wonder and Richard Dimples Fields also put together one cut each – and there's a sweet jazzy soul to some of the best numbers that really makes Betty sound great – a mode that's nicely tripping along, with a groove that allows her to really be free and stretch out with her vocals. There's maybe a few moments that echo the late TK years – but go places that those records never would – and titles include "Give A Smile", "I Come to You", "Make Me Love the Rain", "What Are You Going To Do With It", "Body Slang". CD features bonus tracks – "What Are You Going To Do With It (7" version)", "What Are You Going To Do With It (12" version)", "I Believe In You (7" version)", "Body Slang (7" version)", and "Goodbye To You Hello To Me (12" special version)". Soul Junction (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $11.99
A long-overdue look at the mighty mid 60s work of The Falcons – a group who are usually only covered during their early doo wop years, but who went onto do some tremendous group soul as well! The work here features many of the group's excellent recordings for the Big Wheel label with vocalist Sonny Munro in the lead – a really great singer who more than carries on the strong traditions started in the group by earlier singers who include Eddie Floyd and Wilson Pickett! The Big Wheel work is really great – often a bit Northern and upbeat, but with a very deep vocal style overall that's totally great. Added to the set is some additional material that Sonny Munro cut in later years – showing him to be an equally great solo act, working in some more sophisticated modern soul modes – briefly recording for Epic in the 70s, but represented here on some previously unissued tracks from the time. CD also features two tremendous Falcons-backed cuts on Big Wheel with singer Sandy Hollis in the lead – "I'm Tempted" and "Tables Will Turn" – plus the cuts "Good Good Feeling", "Standing On Guard", "Love You Like You Never Been Loved", "I Can't Help It", "Love Love Love", "In Time For The Blues", and "Standing On Guard" by The Falcons – as well as "Don't Leave Me Alone", "On The Other Side Of Pride", "Why Do I Let You Do The Things You Do", and "I'm Tired Of Being Your Play Thing" by Sonny Munro. The soundtrack to This Is It – the celebratory release of the King Of Pop's rehearsal footage from the days before his untimely death – which also serves as sort of a best of Michael's years at Epic/Sony! It does a fine job of touching on the each of the diverse styles Michael handled in his Epic years, the pioneering guitar accented pop soul magic to the more tender numbers, but, the boon for This Is It is the title track. Okeh/Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Unbelievably beautiful work – and possibly the greatest album ever from the mighty Walter Jackson! Jackson was one of the best singers to come out of the Chicago soul scene of the 60s, and his Okeh recordings are a perfect example of the city's sophisticated approach to Iceman soul – as perfected by Walter, Jerry Butler, and (later) Garland Green. The arrangements are by Riley Hampton, and they have a cold fragile beauty that lingers somewhere between a Scott Walker album and Riley's earlier work with Lorez Alexandria – and the no-filler selection of songs is one of Jackson's best ever– a range of work that really show his deep talents, and his maturing approach to a tune – proud, powerful, and a new level of adult sophistication in soul. Titles include the amazing title cut "Speak Her Name" – plus "Corner In The Sun", "My One Chance To Make It", "It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom", and "Not You". This expanded CD makes the original album ever better – and adds in a full batch of 10 bonus tracks – some of which are unissued, others of which are rare singles from Jackson's later Okeh years, plus rare Epic sides. An interesting compilation of work by Labelle – in that instead of just dipping into the group's excellent early albums for Warner, it also includes tracks from their years at RCA and Epic. The Warner material is the real highlight here, though – as it shows a side of the group that's rarely remembered in the mainstream, a subtle mix of soul and funk and rock that was a lot hipper than some of their later work, and which was very fitting for the hip LA sound of turn-of-the 70s Warner. Classics from that era include the group's funky classic "Moon Shadow" (sadly edited down to 4 minutes from the original 10), "Time & Love", "Wild Horses", "Touch Me All Over", "Morning Much Better", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Sunday's News", "Shades Of Difference", "If I Can't Have You", and "I Believe That I've Finally Made It Home".
