✨✧ Barons, Dominoes, Queenettes, & OthersRoots – Rhythm & Blues ... LP
Folkways, 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes booklet. Cover has light wear. Label has an ink stamp.)

✨✧ Donald ByrdPlaces & Spaces ... LP
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record that was one of the highest points of Donald Byrd's career! The album's the third one he cut with producer/arranger Larry Mizell – and of all Byrd's work with Mizell, this one's the funkiest, the tightest, the most soulful, and the most perfectly realized vision of the smooth jazz funk sound that the team was aiming at. Every track is a winner – and the album glides along with a slippery sinewy groove, never pausing for a weak moment or a misplaced note, shimmering with pride in its own genius. Byrd's trumpet soars over the top, banking gracefully over waves of funky drums, spacey keyboards, and extremely well-placed vocals – all brought together perfectly by Mizell, with a tightly fused style that few people have ever been able to match in the studio since! Tracks include "Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)", "Dominoes", "Wind Parade", "Places & Spaces", and "Night Whistler". (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Ward & The DominoesBilly Ward & His Dominoes ... LP
King, Early 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $6.99 9.98
Mighty work from The Dominoes – a group who got their start here on some key sides for King Records, which then had a huge impact on the sound of vocal groups for years to come! The lineup here includes early performances by both Jackie Wilson and Clyde McPhatter – two later superstars in the world of soul, whose voices here help the group crackle with an edge that's quite different than the more polished style of a few years before! And yet, The Dominoes can also be classy when they want – as heavenly as on ballads as when McPhatter was in The Drifters, at a level that actually makes this work a perfect percursor for The Drifters' 50s material on Atlantic. Titles include "Learnin The Blues", "Three Coins In The Fountain", "Lonesome Road", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "May I Never Love Again", "Little Things Mean A Lot", and "Harbor Lights".
