✨✧ Ray CharlesGenius + Soul = Jazz (2CD expanded version – includes My Kind Of Jazz vols 1 to 3) ... CD
Impulse/Concord, 1961/Early 70s. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing look at the jazz side of Ray Charles – with 4 full albums on one 2CD set! The core featured album is Genius + Soul = Jazz – a wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles, and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! We might argue with the mathematics in the title – or at least joke that Ray was using equations as titles years before Anthony Braxton – but you can't contest the fact that this one's a classic treat, and a legendary attempt to class up Ray's bluesy style for the masses. Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns handled the arrangements, and given that the record was issued by ABC a few years before they brought Ray into a country mode, it's interesting to think what might have happened had his career continued this way. There's only a small number of vocal tracks on the record, and most of the rest feature Ray at the organ, grooving away very nicely! Titles include "One Mint Julep", "Moanin", "I've Got News For You", "Mister C", and "Stompin Room Only". But even more importantly, the album also brings together the killer early 70s albums My Kind Of Jazz, volumes one through three – later instrumental records that really show Ray taking off from the spirit of the original Impulse sessions. These sides were recorded for Ray's Tangerine label, and all have a pretty darn hip feel – a mix of soul jazz modes that we like even more than most of Charles' vocal material! Titles include "Booty Butt", "Our Suite", "Going Home", "Kids Are Pretty People", "This Here", "Zig Zag", "Bluesett", "Sidewinder", "Pas Se O Ne Blues", "Sister Sadie", "3/4 Of The Time", and "Project S". Also features the bonus track "Misty" – CD

Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". CD

✨✧ Quincy Jones & Bill CosbyOriginal Jam Sessions 1969 ... CD
Concord, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stone funky work from the late 60s – a landmark batch of tracks by Quincy Jones – originally recorded for the soundtrack of the first Bill Cosby show, and issued here to the public for the first time ever! The show's famous theme "Hikky-Burr" is a well-known groover with a sinister snapping edge that sums up all the best of Quincy's funky jazz soundtrack work in the 60s – and the rest of the tracks on the set follow in a blend of California soul jazz modes that's mighty mighty nice! Players on the tunes include Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander, Joe Sample, Eddie Harris, Ray Brown, and Paul Humphrey – and the tracks have a loose, improvised feel that's a nice contrast from a lot of Quincy's tighter soundtrack work. Along with 2 different versions of "Hikky-Burr" (one with vocal by Cosby, one without), the set also features tracks that include "Toe Jam", "Jive Den", "Monty Is That You", and "Eubie Walkin" – plus a loosely disguised version of "Listen Here", and a take on "Oh Happy Day". Great stuff – and wonderful to finally have out on CD! (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ VariousJesus Rocked The Jukebox – Small Group Black Gospel 1951 to 1965 ... CD
Concord/Craft, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel – one that really keeps the spirit of the "jukebox" in the title! The tunes here are all upbeat, and often share a lot with R&B material of the 50s – especially the vocal group numbers, which often echo more secular modes of early doo wop, but rise the lyrics towards more heavenly aims – while often imbuing the tunes with lots of earthy energy! All the tracks here are from the Vee Jay and Specialty Records labels – and in the case of Vee Jay especially, the well-chosen selection of tracks provides a long-overdue focus to tunes that have mostly been reissued for the spiritual market, and haven't gotten the kind of exposure in the soul scene that they've needed over the years! This collection really corrects that – handled by the excellent Craft division of Concord who've been giving us some great Stax reissues – and the package is overflowing with rare singles, a total of 40 tracks in all – accompanied by great notes in a really well-done package. Titles include "Let Jesus Lead You" by The Detroiters, "Let Me Ride" by The Staple Singers, "Ananais" by The Chosen Gospel Singers, "Wade In The Water" by Harmonizing Four, "This May Be The Last Time" by The Original Five Blind Boys, "Just Another Day" by Soul Stirrers, "I Am So Glad" by Patterson Singers, "I Dreamed Heaven Was Like This" by Highway QCs, "Move Upstairs" by The Gable-Airs, "Angels Watching Over Me" by The Detroiters, "The Lord's Prayer" by Swan Silvertones, "Sinner Run To Jesus (take 1)" by Soul Stirrers, and "People Don't Sing Like They Used To Sing" by Original Blind Boys. ✨✧ Regina BelleLazy Afternoon ... CD
Peak/Concorde, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly wonderful little album from Regina Belle – more jazz-based than some of her recent efforts, with production and backings by George Duke – in a warm and soulful mode that we really love! Regina's stepping out with some strongly jazzy overtones – working through some older standards and a few classic 70s soul tracks – all brought together wonderfully by Duke, in a style that's never too slick or overdone. Titles include "Fly Me To The Moon", "What Are You Afraid Of", "If I Ruled The World", "Corcovado", "Why Do People Fall In Love", "There's A Love", "For The Love Of You", "The Man I Love", and "Moanin".
