Ray CharlesRay Charles Forever (CD/DVD set) ... CD
Concord, Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. Used CD & DVD ... $8.99
A special assortment of Ray Charles material – pulled from his classic recordings for the Tangerine label, and including one previously unreleased track – and a bonus DVD as well! The occasion for the album is the issue of the USPS Ray Charles stamp – but the set more than stands strongly enough on its own – with a blend of cuts that includes the never-heard "They Can't Take That Away From Me" – plus "None Of Us Are Free", "Imagine", "So Help Me God", "America The Beautiful", "A Song For You", "Ring Of Fire", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Isn't It Wonderful", and "A Song For You". DVD features the 21 minute featurette – "Ray Charles Forever". CD

John Lee HookerKing Of The Boogie (5CD set) ... CD
Concord/Craft, 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $53.99 69.99
A mighty tribute to the music of John Lee Hooker – a set that's got a nice batch of work from his important early years, and is especially heavy on Vee Jay Records material – and one that also includes tracks from his later recordings too! The first three CDs here are the meat of the package – as they feature studio work from the early Detroit years onwards, including some tracks recorded with Texas Slim and Delta John, and many more under Hooker's own name too. CD 4 is all live material, and includes a number of unissued tracks – and the final CD features collaborations with The Groundhogs, Canned Heat, Eddie Kirkland, BB King, and others. The whole thing's packaged in a beautiful book-style design – with 54 pages of rare photos and new liner notes – and even if you've got other John Lee Hooker material in your collection, there's still plenty here to love! 100 tracks in all – 8 previously unissued. ✨✧ Al JarreauAl Jarreau & The Metropole Orkest Live ... CD
Concord, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records we've heard from Al Jarreau in years – a set that features his incredible vocals backed by the Metropol Orkest – a large ensemble who help the legendary singer find a whole new sort of groove! The bold backings are really wonderful – full and flowing, with loads of warm jazz energy that seems to push Al's vocals even more than before – giving them a force that's hardly what you might expect from the aging Jarreau, and really helping to recover that jazzy core that's always made his singing so special. Many of the tunes here are older numbers, but really given an unusual twist in the process – overflowing with a live, ebullient quality that comes through from the very first note. Titles include "Flame", "Agua De Beber", "Cold Duck", "Jacaranda Bougainvillea", "We're In This Love Together", "Midnight Sun", "Something That You Said", "After All", "Spain", and "Scootcha Booty". ✨✧ Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums in a single package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousBreakaway – The Songs Of Jackie DeShannon 1961 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Breathtaking 60s pop, soul & rock tunes penned by Jackie DeShannon – a wide range of glorious singles from Irma Thomas, The Fleetwoods, Helen Shapiro, Barbara Lewis, Duane Eddy, The Concords, The Byrds, Peggy March and many more! Jackie's is an amazing story – starting out as a TV friendly hillbilly & rockabilly pop singer in the late 50s, and going on the be a hugely successful songwriter in the 60s for a wildly diverse pool of singers – from folk pop, to stomping pulpy rock of the Lee Hazlewood and Jack Nitzsche school (the latter a frequent collaborator), to r&b fueled vocal tunes, Jackie wrote all kinds of great stuff, and kept recording to boot. This set couldn't be more appealing, and it's a lovely tribute to a great talent! 27 tracks: the fiery "Break-A-Way" by Irma Thomas, "Woe Is Me" by Helen Shapiro, "Guitar Child" by Duane Eddy & The Rebelettes, "Thank You Darlin'" by Rick Nelson, "Don't Doubt Yourself Babe" by The Byrds, "Stop That Girl" by Barbara Lewis, "I Remember The Girl" by The Bandits, "Only You Can Free My Mind" (previously unreleased demo) by Jackie DeShannon and much more.
