PeddlersHow Cool Is Cool? – The Complete CBS Recordings ... CD
Sony (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
A heck of a cool group – with a really cool sound! The Peddlers were a late 60s British trio, with a sound that was part soul, part jazz, part supper-club vocals – all done with a clean approach and a nice instrumental twist that often included a bit of Hammond organ! A big chunk of the work on this CD was arranged by Brit easy maestro Keith Mansfield, and as such, has a gently funky sound that really takes it miles from its original roots – as familiar numbers get transformed into nicely party-rocking tunes with a very hip groove. More than a few tracks by the group have become favorites of beatheads over the years, and listening to the whole set, we've got to say that there's a wealth of great tunes here – way more than we ever knew the group had recorded! The package features 42 cuts in all – 3 albums worth of material, plus bonus tracks – with titles that include "Sneakin Up On You", "Stormy Weather", "Smile", "Who Can I Turn To", "Southern Woman", "Ebb Tide", "Just A Pretty Song", "Lost Continent", "On A Clear Day", "Nobody Likes Me", "Wasting My Time", and "Say No More". ✨✧ Pauli CarmanDial My Number ... LP
CBS, 1986. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked set from the 80s soul mainstream – the first solo album from the lead singer from Champaign! Pauli Carman's look on the cover definitely gives away the feel of the album – sweet 80s soul with a nice blend of beats and keyboards in the mix, all with the right sort of emphasis to balance out the vocals! Pauli's got a bit more bite than you'd expect for such a classy look on the cover – but he's also great at sliding into a mellow, or midtempo number – the kind of quiet storm 80s tracks that are often a good balance to the more beat-heavy tracks on a record like this. Titles include "Dial My Number", "Lose Control", "High & Low", "You Impress Me", "Flashback", "Close To The Bone", and "Dangerous". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a promo stamp, ring & edge wear, reinforced tape holding the spine, and some peeled spots and writing in pen on front.)

Tina CharlesI Love To Love (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99
A great expanded version of this classic from Tina Charles – one that brings in 8 more bonus tracks from her pre-disco years! These tunes are really wonderful – titles that show a style of female pop that still has the soul-influenced quality that was picked up by the British scene in the late 60s, but which pushes that groove with a bit more polish – serving up class and confidence in a single breath, but still having enough of a soul quality to appeal to our ears. Added to these bonus tracks is the main album – I Love To Love – a record that mixes older vocal touches with the swirling sounds of the legendary Biddu – in a groove that's got a heck of a lot to offer! Tina never was one of the most underground singers of her generation – but it's her confidence in that fact that makes this music so great – an unabashed love of the poppier sounds of the dancefloor, in a way that beautifully mixes together 70s AM sensibilities with the growing sounds of the disco movement. Biddu's a great choice for the project – and while the music isn't as exotic as some of his own albums, it's still got some great instrumental flair! Titles include "Love Me Like A Lover", "I Love To Love", "Hold Me", "Hey Boy", "Why", and "Disco Fever". Bonus tracks are from 1969 to 1973 – and include "Rich Girl", "In The Middle Of The Day", "Good To Be Alive", "Same Old Story", "Band Of Gold", and "You Can Do Magic". CD

Earth Wind & FireOpen Our Eyes (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1974. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Spiritual, soulful, and oh, so beautiful! This record captures Earth Wind & Fire at a perfect transition moment – when they've still got some of their avant jazz roots, but are leaning towards the smooth soulful funk sound that put them on the charts a few years later. The whole thing's a wonderful mix of spiritualism and funky jazz – and it includes their massive cover of "Mighty Mighty", plus a lot of tracks with cool instrumentation, like "Kalimba Story", "Drum Song", and "Caribou". Great jazzy groovers, all of them! Contains 4 previously unissued tracks – "Ain't No Harm To Moan", "Step's Tune", "Dreams", and "Fair But So Uncool (Walkin In N'Awlins mix)". CD

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireThat's The Way Of The World ... LP
CBS, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". LP, Vinyl record album

Free LifeFree Life ... CD
CBS/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the great late 70s Columbia sets from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the universe – the one and only album by this obscure west coast group, who get some strong help in the studio from Phillip Bailey! Bailey co-produced, and wrote some great songs for the record – and the group's own mix of jazz, funk, and soul is very much in the best spirit of Earth Wind & Fire at the time – tight at all the right moments, but also with this righteous energy in the background – an overall feel that's way deeper than most large ensembles on major labels. This spirit really comes through in the sublime cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window" – which has a beautifully mellow jazzy groove, and which is on a par with anything Maurice White was laying down in the mid-tempo mode in the 70s – but the whole album's mighty nice, and other titles include "Smile", "Spirit Of Love", "Second Coming", and "Say You Do". CBS/Sony (Japan), 1982. Used ... $24.99
A classic album of all-out soul from Herbie Hancock – done in close collaboration with Rod Temperton of Heatwave – in a jazzy-styled version of that group's own great groove! Temperton handled arrangements and a lot of songwriting, and most cuts have lead vocals from Wayne Anthony – who does a nice job with the lyrics, but still leaves Herbie some space for keyboard solos too – in a groove that's a fair bit warmer than some of the other keyboard-heavy soul records of the time. Production is by Narada Michael Walden, Herbie, and Jay Graydon – and titles include the jazzy stepping gem "Getting To The Good Part", plus "Lite Me Up", "The Bomb", "Can't Hide Your Love", "The Fun Tracks", and "Motor Mouth". ManhattansToo Hot To Stop It ... CD
CBS/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $10.99
A different sound than the Manhattans of the 70s – but a set that's still got some wonderful harmonies throughout! The production has a modern sort of 80s crackle – more beats and keyboards than before, but also some standout acapella moments that hearken back to an old school style of group soul that even predates the first recordings by The Manhattans back in the 60s. This mix of modern and classic really gives the album some weight – and is balanced out nicely through the set list – with tracks that include "Don't Say No", "Angel Of The Night", "You Send Me", "C'Est La Vie", "Dreamin", "Too Hot To Stop It", and "When We Are Made As One". ✨✧ Melba MooreMelba (Epic) ... LP
Epic/CBS, 1978. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Melba Moore gets some great help here from the Philly soul duo of McFadden & Whitehead – whose soaring styles proves to be a perfect fit for her amazing voice! Melba had cut some great work before this set, but here things really seem to come together – her amazing range, her ability to be expressive without going over the top, and her maturing role as a soul singer – which would take her to great territory in years to come! There's almost an indie soul vibe to the record at times – never too overtly commercial, and sophisticated but not hitting you over the head either – on titles that include "You Stepped Into My Life", "Happy", "Pick Me Up I'll Dance", "There's No Other Like You", "Together Forever", and "It's Hard Not To Like You". ✨✧ Asha PuthliAsha Puthli (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". A masterpiece of spacey soul by the great Asha Pulthi – a singer who recorded mostly in Europe, with funky maestro Dieter Zimmerman! Asha's got vocals that are somewhere in the range of Minnie Riperton or Sylvia Striplin or Sylvia Robinson – as you'll hear on the album's standout break track "Space Walk", which is one of our all time favorite obscure soul tracks. Superior MovementKey To Your Heart ... CD
CBS/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... $10.99
Sublime soul from Superior Movement – an overlooked Chicago group of the 80s, but one that's every bit as wonderful as any of the bigger acts we can think of from the time! The group definitely put harmonies first in their music – and although the album's a bigger-label effort, the vocals have the wonderfully personal feel of smaller label harmony soul from years back – retooled a bit with 80s instrumentation, which makes for a surprisingly great mix with the lyrics. Things are tight, but never too smooth – very well balanced, with none of the too-commercial missteps that other groups were making at the time – and titles include "The Key To Your Heart", "For You", "Come Fly With Me", "Lost Affair", "Guilty", "Sweet Dreams", and "Be My Cinderella". Teena Marie steps out strongly on her own – really knocking it out of the park on this initial album for CBS – entirely written, arranged, and produced by Lady T! The grooves are as funky as before, but possibly have a leaner quality overall – a tighter 80s groove approach to the music, yet always with the fully fleshed-out soul that we love in Teena's handling of the vocals. Basslines are mighty nice –more than enough to hook us in on just about every tune – but the ballads are pretty sweet, too! Titles include "Robbery", "Playboy", "Ask Your Momma", "Dear Lover", "Stop The World", "Midnight Magnet", and "Cassanova Brown". CD
