✨✧ James BrownI'm Real ... CD
Scotti Bros/CBS, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
James Brown gets a new injection of life at the end of the 80s – thanks to a collaboration here with Full Force, who wrote, arranged, and produced the album! The groove here is often more in a Full Force mode than you might expect from James – a full-on 80s urban sound, filled with plenty of beats at the bottom, yet still allowing The Godfather plenty of space to do his thing vocally! In a way, the format's almost a bit like some of the James Brown remix work that was showing up around the same time – except that the tunes are all new, and somewhat different territory for James. Titles include "I'm Real", "Static (parts 1 & 2)", "You & Me", "Time To Get Busy", "She Looks All Types A Good", "Keep Keepin", and "Can't Git Enuf". CD

Earth Wind & FireOpen Our Eyes (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1974. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Spiritual, soulful, and oh, so beautiful! This record captures Earth Wind & Fire at a perfect transition moment – when they've still got some of their avant jazz roots, but are leaning towards the smooth soulful funk sound that put them on the charts a few years later. The whole thing's a wonderful mix of spiritualism and funky jazz – and it includes their massive cover of "Mighty Mighty", plus a lot of tracks with cool instrumentation, like "Kalimba Story", "Drum Song", and "Caribou". Great jazzy groovers, all of them! Contains 4 previously unissued tracks – "Ain't No Harm To Moan", "Step's Tune", "Dreams", and "Fair But So Uncool (Walkin In N'Awlins mix)". CD

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireThat's The Way Of The World ... LP
CBS, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". LP, Vinyl record album

FantasySex & Material Possessions ... LP
Pavillion/CBS, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The second set from this early 80s disco trio – a Tony Valor side project, served up with all the soaringly soulful lines we love in his work from the 70s! Fantasy features two male singers and one female – trading back vocals nicely over catchy rhythms that sparkle with plenty of soul – and a surprising amount of warm instrumentation, much more so for clubby projects like this from the time. A few cuts get a bit mellower – almost going for a crossover soul feel, but in a nice way – and titles include "Believe Me", "Hold On Tight", "So Easy To Say", "Too Hot For Love", and "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It". ✨✧ Herbie HancockLite Me Up ... LP
CBS, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic album of all-out soul from Herbie Hancock – done in close collaboration with Rod Temperton of Heatwave – in a jazzy-styled version of that group's own great groove! Temperton handled arrangements and a lot of songwriting, and most cuts have lead vocals from Wayne Anthony – who does a nice job with the lyrics, but still leaves Herbie some space for keyboard solos too – in a groove that's a fair bit warmer than some of the other keyboard-heavy soul records of the time. Production is by Narada Michael Walden, Herbie, and Jay Graydon – and titles include the jazzy stepping gem "Getting To The Good Part", plus "Lite Me Up", "The Bomb", "Can't Hide Your Love", "The Fun Tracks", and "Motor Mouth". ✨✧ Leon HaywoodIntimate (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/FTG, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An intimate record from Leon Haywood, but one that's still got his sense of groove nicely in place – at a level that has the singer really warming up to a new sort of modern soul style in the process! There's still some of the elements of Haywood's earlier records in place – but overall, Leon's pushing forward into more mature soul territory – a mode that's getting him out of the west coast underground, and which should have made this set a lasting 70s classic. Leon handled all the arrangements himself, but also gets some badass assistance on strings from Gene Page – whose sense of sophistication really sharpens up the focus of the record – and titles include "Let's Get It On", "Strokin", "Dream Dream", "Let Me Make It Good To You", and a remake of Leon's classic, "It's Got To Be Mellow". ✨✧ Chris JasperSuperbad (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/Big Break (UK), 1987. Used ... $4.99
A wickedly wonderful solo set from Chris Jasper – cut in a mode that's right up there with the best 80s material he did with the Isley Brothers! Jasper's voice sounds surprisingly great in the lead – maybe not as powerful as that of Ernie Isley, but with a sense of individuality that really makes the album stand out – and that great mix of righteousness and warmth that made his previous collaborations such classics. There's a bit more of a focus on the groove at times – never overdone, just maybe more keyboard lines alongside the lyrics – as you'd guess from Chris' role in the previous group. All tunes are Jasper originals, and titles include "Superbad", "One Time Love", "Like I Do", "Earthquake", "The Son Of Man", "Dance For The Dollar", and "My Soul Train". CD features bonus tracks – "Superbad (12" Superbad marathon mix)", "One Time Love (12" ext mix)", "Superbad (inst)", and "One Time Love (inst)". CD

✨✧ Kimiko KasaiWe Can Fall In Love ... LP
CBS (Japan), 1976. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of those great 70s albums from Japanese vocalist Kimiko Kasai – a singer who started in jazz, but was equally well-suited to classy, contemporary soul – a mode that maybe made her the equivalent of Marlena Shaw or Nancy Wilson at the time! In keeping with Shaw, Kimiko works here with the legendary Chess/Cadet arranger Richard Evans – whose approach is as perfectly balanced as his own great music of the time – more modern soul than the decade before, but still with the richer sophistication of his years in jazz and experience doing larger arrangements. Titles include "Being In Love", "Along The Nile", "We Can Fall In Love", "In Common", and "Love Don't Love Nobody". (Vocalists, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MutinyFunk Plus The One ... LP
CBS, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer from Mutiny – the group's second album, and one that's even better than the first – thanks to some really great keyboards, and an even more bass-heavy groove! Jerome Brailey and crew seem to really be picking up on the best funky currents from the underground scene – moving past some of the straighter modes learned with P-Funk, and evolving into a rich groove that's definitely their own – very sharp and focused on the rhythms, even with the vocals, and with this snapping quality in the grooves that's got a wicked old school vibe. Titles include our all-time favorite Mutiny cut – "Semi First Class Seat" – plus "Reality", "One On One", "Will It Be Tomorrow", and "Don't Bust the Groove". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MutinyMutiny On The Mamaship ... LP
CBS, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first great album from Mutiny – a lesser-known star in the P-Funk universe of the 70s, but one that's still every bit as great as the rest! The group's the brainchild of Jerome Brailey – who was with George Clinton for a few years, then left to form Quazar – then stepped out on his own at the head of Mutiny – where his well-crafted drum work gave the group razor-sharp rhythms from the start, which often get laced with lots of Bootsy-style basslines and some sweet guitar work as well! The vocals often have a cool compressed quality that slides right down in the grooves – and titles include "Go Away From Here", "Lump", "Funk N Bop", "Burning Up", and "Voyage To the Bottom Of The P". TSOP/CBS, 1980. Near Mint- ... $2.99
We know what you're thinking: "These guys were best in the 70s." Hold that thought for a moment and check out this great album – because unlike a lot of their other chart-topping contemporaries from 1972 and 1973, the O'Jays actually continued to mature as a group, and managed to turn out some really fantastic material during the 80s. This album is really quite nice – and feature the band's great harmony stylings set to some beautiful modern soul arrangements, with a really sweet mellow groove throughout. With "To Prove I Love You", "The Answer's In You", "Once Is Not Enough" and "You're The Girl Of My Dreams (Sho'nuff Real)". LP, Vinyl record album

Asha PuthliAsha Puthli ... LP
CBS, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Asha Pulthi's first album – an excellent set of funky soul tunes, recorded in Germany with backings that are a mixture of spacey electric, smooth funk, and campy easy grooves. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", and George Harrison's "I Dig Love". Other tracks include "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bonnie PointerIf The Price Is Right ... LP
Private I/FTG, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Bonnie Pointer sounding great in the mid 80s– on a hard-to-find album cut for Private I/CBS after a drawn out split with Motown – one that finds her in a prime, catchy dancefloor R&B mode! To our ears, If The Price Is Right holds up as well as a lot of the pop soul of the period, including Bonnie's siblings The Pointer Sisters – though it obviously didn't hit as hugely! It's got crisp keyboards, programming and 80s boogie, but there's also some room for more more tender balladry and chugging club soul reminiscent of the late disco years. Of course, Bonnie's lovely, soulful voice is the most important characteristic. An overlooked album that's well worth catching up with! Include "Premonition", "Johnny", "Come Softly To Me", "Under The Influence Of Love", "Your Touch", "Tight Blue Jeans", "There's Nobody Quite Like You" and "If The Price Is Right". This FTG CD has a whopping 9 bonus tracks – single, club, dub and extended 12" mixes and more – including "Your Touch (Club Version)", "Premonition (Dance Version)", "There's Nobody Quite Like You (Single Version)", "The Beast In Me (12" Version)", "Heaven" from The Heavenly Bodies soundtrack. ✨✧ Tower Of PowerYou Ought To Be Havin Fun – The Columbia/Epic Anthology ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Mid 90s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two slices of work from Tower Of Power – both recorded for Sony/CBS, but with over a decade between them! First up, the set presents 19 killer cuts from the Columbia Records years of Tower Of Power – a time when the group moved away from Warner Brothers, where they were maybe losing a little steam – and forged this fantastic sense of soul that was missing from some of their earlier records! At the start, TOP were a rock-solid funk act – but here, they also bring a stronger soul approach to their vocals and songwriting – in a way that mixes their always-sharp instrumentation with a deeper, more developed vibe – super-strong material that sometimes doesn't always get its due. The set brings together Columbia tracks from albums, singles, and even some b-sides – with tracks that include "You Ought To Be Havin Fun", "Am I A Fool", "Lovin You Is Gonna See Me Thru", "Ain't Nothin Stoppin Us Now", "Because I Think The World Of You", "We Came To Play", "Love Bug", "While We Went To The Moon", "Somewhere Down The Road", "Deal With It", "By Your Side", and "Heaven Must Have Made You". The second half of the package features tunes the group recorded for Epic Records during the mid 90s – material that was only issued on CD at the time, and which shows TOP to continue the strengths of their earlier years! Some of the cuts go for a retro funk approach, others have a more contemporary soul vibe – and the set features 16 Epic tracks that include "A Little Knowledge", "Recapture The Magic", "Soul With A Capital S", "Please Come Back To Stay", "You", "Rhythm & Business", "Come To A Decision", "Undercurrent", "Diggin On James Brown", and "How Could This Happen To Me". ✨✧ Deniece WilliamsSong Bird ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A pretty sweet late 70s set from Deniece Williams – produced by Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire – and it sounds like it! The set ranges from catchy, crossover ready funky soul sweetened ever more by Deniece's amazing voice, to more stripped down and intimate numbers. There's a couple of stylistic detours, one bright eyed gospel soul tune and a more grandly furnished ballad or two – but for the most part it's a wonderfully produced late 70s funky soul set that takes flight even higher thanks to Deniece's incredible range! Titles include "Time", "We Have Love For You", "Season", "Be Good To Me", "The Paper", "Boy I Left Behind", "Baby, Baby My Love's All For You" and "God Is Amazing". LP, Vinyl record album
