✨✧ SheppardsBunky's Picks – The Best Of The Sheppards ... CD
West Side (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Huge in Chicago, but not nearly as well-known elsewhere, The Sheppards were one of the windy city's best-ever vocal groups, and they had a rich deep style that spanned the gap between R&B and Soul, in a similar manner to The Impressions. This long-overdue set brings together 25 cuts by the group, and it spans the years 1959 to 1969, giving you a complete look at the group by including raw early R&B material, plus later smoother harmony soul singles from the late 60s. We love the later stuff especially, but all the stuff on here's pretty darn nice – and all cuts feature production by the legendary Bill "Bunky" Sheppard, the Chi-soul genius from whom the group took their name. Titles include "Your Love (Has Got A Hole In It)", "Loving You", "Glitter In Your Eyes", "Tragic", "So In Need For Love", "Never Let Me Go", and "I'm Not Wanted". CD

Gene ChandlerDuke Of Earl (Vee Jay) ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A sweet soul classic from the young Gene Chandler! The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul material in a sweet tenor-voiced harmony style! Bill Bunky Sheppard produced the record, and it's got a sophisticated approach that offers a number of different modes for Gene to shine – heartbreaking ballads, rousing uptempo numbers, and some cool exotic tunes. Titles include "Nite Owl", "So Many Ways", "Lonely Island", "Kissin In The Kitchen", "I Wake Up Crying", "Turn On Your Love Light", and "Daddy's Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing with deep groove – a nice copy. Cover has a bit of splitting on the top seam, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Tyrone DavisI Can't Go On This Way ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A late 70s gem from Tyrone's years on Columbia Records – one that shows both sides of his talents for the label! The set starts out with an extended clubby groover called "Get On Up (Disco)" – a bumping sort of number that's clearly trying to push him into Johnnie Taylor territory, and which comes off surprisingly well. But even better are the rest of the tracks on the set – which update Tyrone's older Brunswick sound with a smoother, more sophisticated sort of style – still recorded in Chicago, and with some southern soul traces – but usually done in a warmer midtempo groove, with excellent lead vocals and great backing from The Haywood Sisters. Titles include "It's You It's You", "Bunky", "All I Ever Need", "I Can't Go On This Way", and "Can't Help But Say". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ EsquiresGet On Up ... CD
Collectables, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic Chicago soul recorded under the aegis of the great Bill Bunky Sheppard! The group was one of the best that worked with Sheppard – and they really take advantage of his odd way of producing harmonies, in the style that he'd worked out earlier in the 60s with The Sheppards. Arrangements are by Tom Tom Washington – and the cuts bounce along in that loping groove that was clearly becoming the trademark of the Chicago scene. You probably already know the hit "Get On Up" and the follow-up "And Get Away" – but the album's great all the way through, and features many original cuts like "Listen to Me", "When I'm Ready", "No Doubt About It", and "My Sweet Baby". ✨✧ Skool BoyzSkool Boyz ... LP
Destiny, 1981. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Skool Boyz are a lot better than you might guess from their dated 80s spelling – a surprisingly tight little trio, bouncing along with lots of riffing rhythms and sweet keyboard lines, but also keeping things pretty solid with a good mix of ballads alongside the groovers! One of the group members is Stanton Sheppard, and Bill Bunky Sheppard's listed as the executive producer – so we're guessing there's some sort of connection to the earlier years of the Chicago soul scene here – and there's definitely a solid approach to the record that's way more than the commercial pop you might expect from other groups with "boys" in their name. Titles include "Jam Beneath The Groove", "Can We Do It Again" (which has little bit of rapping), "You Can Get Down", "This Feeling Must Be Real", "I Ain't Gonna Go Searching", and "You Took The Best Part Of Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)
