African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Tyrone Ashley's Funky Music MachineLet Me Be Your Man ... LP
Truth & Soul, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Lost funky soul from Jersey – incredible workby Tyrone Ashley & The Funky Music Machine – a rare batch of gritty harmony soul and some mighty funky numbers! Tyrone, aka Sonny Campbell, and the Machines were contemporaries of the Parliaments and future P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Worrell in 1960s Plainfield, NJ – and they just missed some opportunities to make it in the national landscape. They ended up working with the Phil LA Of Soul label out of Philly in the late 60s, which resulted in one great single and an LP that was never released. The deep funky soul diggers at Truth & Soul have put together some of the Phil LA Of Soul tracks plus previously unreleased material cut at Ashley's own Record Hut studio during this period – great stuff that rolls from the grittiest of harmony group soul, with soaring lead vocals – to some straight killer funk tunes! Incredible stuff! Tracks include "Come On Home", "Just A Little While Longer", "I Can't Help Myself", "For Your Love", "Let Me Be Your Man" (inst), "Sing A Song Sister", "Can't Stay Away", "Love Sweet Love", "Gotta Clean Up The World" (Pt 1 & Pt 2), "I Want My Baby Back" (inst) and "Does Frankie Ever Call My Name. ✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! (Jazz, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Sheree BrownMusic ... LP
Capitol, 1982. Near Mint- ... $7.99
One of the two beautifully sweet albums of soul that the lovely Sheree Brown cut for Capitol in the early 80s. This one has less of a smooth jazzy sound than her first one, but it compensates by adding some tracks in a nice 80s groove mode – pushing the sound a bit further than before. Sheree still sings lead with her fragile Minnie Riperton-esque voice, and she also plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar on the LP – and the LP features guest work by Syreeta, Stevie Wonder, and Patrice Rushen, all a perfect fit for Sheree's lightly jazzy style. Tracks include "On My Way Home", "Feels So Good", "Love Only Knows", "Got To Get Away", and "Happy Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". CD

One of the less-remembered acts of the Solar Records west coast soul scene – but a great one too – and a group who step out beautifully on this killer set, thanks to great production help from The Whispers! Collage themselves have a tight, funky approach – heavy on basslines and keyboards, and almost setting the stage for Midnight Star – but they also have a nice sense of soul that The Whispers really bring out, especially on the mellower cuts, which may well be our favorites on the record. Titles include the wonderful slow stepper "Feelings" – a complete transformation of the hit to a slow jam soul classic – plus "Money In Your Pocket", "When You Smile", "Special Occasion", "Do You Like Our Music", and their cover of "Groovin". CD features bonus tracks "Groovin (single version)" and "Money In Your Pocket (single)". CD

✨✧ Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! CD

Eddie DrennonWould You Dance To My Music ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Eddie was one of the kings of the Latin Hustle – taking the elements of the burgeoning New York salsa scene, and linking them up with the growing dancefloor trends at the end of the 70s. The result is a nice batch of jazzy groovers that have a lot more musical depth than some of the other titles on the Casablanca label at the time – and which occasionally show Eddie's roots in funkier styles. The best example of this is "Come Dance With Me", which starts with a good drumbreak, then rolls into a string-laden groove that's punctuated with some good basslines. Other nice cuts include "That's Just Too Bad", "Save Your Love For Me", "Someday, Someway", and "Never Let Me Go", which also has a bit of a break on the intro. LP, Vinyl record album

DriftersI'll Take You Where The Music's Playing ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The Drifters' last full album for Atlantic Records – and a rock-solid set that may well be one of their best for the label in the 60s! The album's heavy on those lightly loping tunes that the group virtually invented a few years before – that slightly-sweetened approach to soul that became known as the uptown sound and which still had The Drifters as one of its key proponents at the time of this set. Production is by the great Bert Berns, who really knows how to balance all elements perfectly – and many of the lead vocals are by Johnny Moore, whose crackling vocals bring in a nice sense of feeling, even when the tunes are pretty darn catchy. But possibly the best thing about the record is the songs – as they're mostly pretty fresh tracks that move past some of the overplayed Drifters hits – but which still resonate with similar themes about live and life in the big city. Titles include "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing", "I've Got Sand In My Shoes", "At The Club", "He's Just A Playboy", "Follow Me", "Far From The Maddening Crowd", and "Come On Over To My Place". Not Frankie Lymon, but Frankie Dymon – a US expatriate who works here with some funky prog backings! Dymon delivers hip, soulful poetry in English – often with a bit of a dark edge – and the instrumentation features guitar, piano, and organ – all familiar elements, but produced with an eerie, abstract feel by the legendary Conny Plank, who really brings in a strong sense of space to the set! While the album's got a degree of righteous power, it's different than American efforts of this type – much more heady, and trippy overall – US themes and concerns abstracted out in the newer freedoms of the European scene. All music was composed by guitarist Adam Reichel, who spearheads the project – and titles include "Wait N*gger Wait", "The City", "Aftermyth", "Soul Sister Angela", "In The Same Bag", and "Judy". Jose FelicianoSouled/For My Love Mother Music ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1974. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99 16.99
Overlooked genius from Jose Feliciano – two great albums on a single CD! On Souled, Jose Feliciano really lives up to the title – stepping out strongly with the same style used on his "California Dreamin" hit – a massive blend of strings, soul, and Jose's unique vocal approach! Feliciano came out of the Latin market in the 60s, but by the time of this record he's really a key crossover force in soul – and one that helped establish the brown-eyed variant of the music through his massive work for RCA. The instrumentation is often as groovy as the record – with backing by a small combo that includes Milt Holland on percussion, Ray Brown on bass, and Mike Melvoin on keyboards – plus added arrangements from RCA talents George Tipton and All Capps. Titles include the groovy "Hitchcock Railway", plus "Younger Generation", "Sad Gypsy", "Hi Heel Sneakers", "She's Too Good To Me", and "Sleep Late My Lady Friend". For My Love Mother Music is kind of a mixed bag of sorts from Jose Feliciano, but a nice one too – recorded in the same year as his sublime And The Feelin's Right album, but not as concise as that one – and more of a collection of different modes explored on Feliciano albums over the few previous years. Steve Cropper's working with Jose on production here – and some tracks have a rootsier Memphis-inspired sound, while others pick up a bit more of a warmer LA glow. Feliciano himself is perhaps a bit too "heartfelt" at times – working the lyrics and notes with an earnestness that's fine, but which kind of holds him back a bit, and doesn't let his voice flow along with the tunes in the way that we really like on other records – but the overall style is still pretty great, and Jose's always a lot hipper than most of his contemporaries! Titles include "Blame It On The Sun", "Mother Music", "Shoo-Fly", "I Like What You Give", "Stoney Heart", "For My Love", and "World Without Music". CD

Even though Leon Huff had been banging around in soul music for about 15 years – most famously as half of the Philly soul superteam Gamble & Huff – this 1980 LP was his first effort as an artist, instead of producer. Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... About December 4, 2019
A soaring solo moment for Lamont Johnson – the bassist whose work was a big part of the Brainstorm ensemble at their start – and who really makes some great magic here on his own! It's clear from the set that Johnson was one of the more spiritual members of Brainstorm – as the approach here, while still heavy on funk and soul, also has some deeper touches too – core ideas from Johnson that are expanded strongly by arranger Jerry Peters, whose direction of the project stands as one of his best studio moments of the time! The team of Peters and Johnson really come up with a set that pushes past the usual grooves of the time – with some elements that recall the jazzier spiritual elements from folks like Eddie Russ or Lonnie Liston Smith, mixed with more of the focus on the groove that Johnson's bass brought to Brainstorm. There's lots of great guests on the record, too – including Norma Jean Bell on saxes, Renae Williams on vocals, Ronnie Foster on keyboards, Lee Ritenour on guitar, and Randall Jacobs on the mighty cool Roland Space Echoplex guitar. Samuel Jonathan JohnsonMy Music ... LP
Columbia/Be With (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About December 5, 2019
One of our favorite 70s soul records ever – and a totally unique set as well! To our ears, Samuel Jonathan Johnson belongs in the company of Roy Ayers, Norman Connors, and other spiritual soul heavyweights – even though he only ever cut this one album for Columbia Records back in 1978! The set's got a really visionary feel – keyboards that compare with the best mellow soul lines of Donny Hathaway, and a vocal style that's got some of the range of Ronnie McNeir, mixed with a more human approach to the lyrics that makes the whole thing wonderfully personal, too. There's lots of jazzy elements on the Fender Rhodes lines – which bubble beautifully on the mellow moments, and step out boldly on the album's few groovers – making for a richness that goes way beyond the vocals, and which puts Johnson in the company of DJ Rogers or Webster Lewis. Forgive us if we keep name-dropping like that – but the set's a stunning treasure from an artist who should have gotten the same sort of recognition as all the best soul talents of the 70s. The title track – "My Music" – has an amazing bit of bubbling synth intro (and outro), cool spacey vocals by Sam, and a mellow, but tight groove that sounds a bit like something that Roy Ayers might have cooked up – and it leads off an incredible album of other titles that include "Sweet Love", "Just Us", "You", "Reason For The Reason", "Because I Love You", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Yesterdays & Tomorrow", and "Thank You Mother Dear". She's really in great form here – stepping out with some fully clubby backings, and working with the mighty T-Life, who's really got a great ear for her groove! The style's a bit less disco than previous albums – some simpler soul at points, mixed with other upbeat modes that hearken a bit more towards the sound of the dancefloor in the early 80s – almost a precursor to that decade's groove at points. Taj MahalBrothers/Music Fuh Ya/Evolution ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A trio of Warner Brothers albums from Taj Mahal – all served up as a single collection! First up is Brothers – one of the better records that Taj Mahal cut during in the later 70s – probably because it was a soundtrack, and pushed the groove into some interesting places – with Taj's gruff vocals working over some Caribbean rhythms and modern blues, and more smoothed out moments! The latter moments actually creep near or even cross over the line into kind of a fusiony soul feel, with the tightly thumping electric bass and rolling sax, but Taj keeps the overall vibe as uncommonly diverse as his other records for Columbia. Tracks include "Malcolm's Song", "David & Angela", "Night Rider", "Brother's Doin Time", "Free The Brothers", "Love Theme In The Key Of D", and "Funky Butt". Music Fuh Ya is a sweetly soulful set that has Taj Mahal really trying on some new flavors – yet still keeping things strongly in the bluesy territory of his roots! In addition to the lead vocals and lots of acoustic guitar, the set also features key contributions from Rudy Costa on a range of saxes, plus flute and kalimba too – plus other unusual elements that include steel drums, timbales, and banjo – all of which inflect different moments with freshly playful sounds, and a surprisingly Caribbean vibe at times. Titles include "You Got It", "Sailin", "Truck Driver's Two Step", "Curry", and "The Four Mills Brothers". Evolution is a well-titled set – given that the record really shows an evolution in the style of Taj Mahal! Some cuts are still in an older bluesy mode, but a few others feature some great backings from Leon Pendarvis – who creates this fuller, soaring sort of style that takes off with plenty of power! The approach is a great way to use Taj's vocals in a richer 70s soul setting – and those cuts are balanced by some more stripped-down numbers that include a few that follow in the recent Mahal use of steel drums. Titles include "Sing A Happy Song", "Lowdown Showdown", "Why You Do Me This Way", "Highnite", and "Salsa De Laventille". (Blues, Soul) CD

The great Vince Montana was one of the strongest forces in the Philly soul scene of the 70s – and he was not only an excellent vibist whose instrumentation can be heard on countless soul sessions, but also one heck of an arranger, with a real talent for a soulful groove – as you'll hear in this classic solo set! Montana's work is head and shoulders above most disco of the time – and includes strong elements of funk, and a real concern for jazzy phrasing that kept things real – all of which makes for a sophisticated blend that really sets this one apart from the pack – and has made the set a real Dusty Groove favorite over the years. Montana's genius can be heard clearly on many cuts on the record – from the sweet funk of "Samba De Montana", to the complicated conga and jazzy breakdown disco of "You Know How Good It Is", to the straight soulful disco of the title cut, "I Hear Music", which is a great little cover of the Gamble & Huff track! New Orleans Jazz OrchestraSongs – The Music Of Allen Toussaint ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A really nice take on the music of New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a record that sets things up in new jazz-based arrangements that open up whole new sides of the songs! You'll know most of the numbers here – especially if you've got any of Toussaint's classic albums or productions in your collection – yet the approach is nicely different, with rich horn shadings that make for a very different vibe – but which still get vocal treatment on most numbers, from singers who include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philip Manuel, and Gerald French. Adonis Rose handles drums with a nice Nola groove, and also directed the whole thing too – and titles include "Working In The Coal Mine", "Southern Nights", "It's Raining", "Zimple Street", "Ruler Of My Heart", "Java", and "Gert Town". ✨✧ O'JaysMessage In The Music ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of those records that really took Philly soul to the next level back in the 70s – a set that works amazing magic with the already-great harmonies of the O'Jays – pointing them even more strongly towards groove-heavy territory, while still keeping all the fragile, personal qualities of their earlier work! The title cut is a righteous anthem that never gets old – a perfect blend of subtle politics and homegrown soul – all polished to perfection in the Philly studios. And the rest of the record is equally mindblowing – a set where even the ballads have as much power as the upbeat numbers – as you'll hear in the lineup of tracks that includes "Message In The Music", "Darlin, Darlin, Baby", "A Prayer", "Make A Joyful Noise", "Let Life Flow", and "Paradise". The whole thing's brilliant – with pure and simple songwriting that helped re-direct the sound of contemporary soul – and that unmistakable vocal quality that always makes Omar an instant favorite to our ears! DJ RogersIt's Good To Be Alive/On The Road Again/Love, Music & Life ... CD
RCA (Germany), 1975/1976. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A nice reissue which brings together 3 LPs by one of the most underrecognized talents of 70's soul! DJ's deep soul voice is smooth and mellow, with the kind of honest heartbreaking quality that you find in the best work by Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. It's Good To Be Alive finds DJ in a strong set of arrangements that have a stripped-down feel, with a little bit of electronics, as on some of Stevie's best LPs from the early 70's. Tracks include "Hold On, Be Strong", "Think I'll Make It Anyhow", "If You Didn't Love Me (Don't Go Away)", "Love You Forever", and "Say You Love Me". On the Road Again is another classic work from DJ – with a soaring, sweeping, righteous soul feel that reminds us of Rance Allen at his best, or of some of the smooth work of Lamont Dozier from the same time. DJ wrote, arranged, and produced all the tracks on this album, and the cuts have a slight nod towards spiritual gospel, with excellent jazzy touches that keep things in a modern vein. Titles include "Let My Life Shine", "Secret Lady", "Girl I Love You", "Say You Love Me, One More Time", and "Holding On To Love". Love Music & Life is as great the other two – with tracks that include "Saved By Love", "Love Will Make It Better", "No Price", "You Against You", "Hold Out For Love", and "Love Is On The Way". 30 tracks on 2 CDs! Dorothy AshbyDorothy's Harp (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cadet/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! Duke/Reel Music, 1963. Used ... $14.99
One of Bobby Blue Bland's best albums ever – a stunning mix of blues and soul that's the kind of killer stuff that will make you a fan of his forever! There's no beating Bland at this point in his career – and the record is one of the finest illustrations of the power he brought to his work, subtly balancing a sense of class with rootsier down-hominess that few other singers could ever handle so well. That blend allowed Bobby to reach out to way more audiences than most of his contemporaries – and it's still equally powerful today – and the album's arrangements by Joe Scott are impeccable, with a slight touch of jazz that we totally love. The album includes classics like "That's The Way Love Is", "Call On Me", "Cry Lover Cry", "Care For Me", "Bobby's Blues", and "Honky Tonk". DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". An excellent set of messed-up funky soul from Etta James – one of her killer early 70s sides for Chess! The album mixes together bluesy tracks and straight ahead soul – in a hip, bad-walking style that nicely updates Etta's older style for the 70s. The set includes a great funky cut called "Out On The Street Again", which sounds like it should be the theme to some blacksploitation film because it's got these cool strings, and a nice hard groove. ✨✧ Gloria JonesShare My Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $14.99
A heavy heavy set from Gloria Jones – a record that features some killer Paul Riser arrangements that are right up there with the deepest Motown work of the early 70s! Jones' groove is always a bit different than most of her contemporaries – not the usual Motown bag, and really far-reaching for the label – heavy funk one minute, more sophisticated the next – and almost pointing the way towards her later association with T Rex, and Gloria's time in the UK. Riser really pushes himself strongly here – backing Gloria with full strings on some tracks, soaring in the trademark upbeat Riser groove – then dropping into heavier rhythms at other points, with complicated elements that make the album a treasure trove of fresh surprises with each new track! Cuts include "Share My Love", "Oh Baby", "Old Love New Love", "Try Love", "So Tired", "Baby Don't Cha Know", and "Why Can't You Be Mine". CD also features a bonus demo version of "I I Were Your Woman" – and comes with a 16 page booklet, filled with notes, album details, photos, and even a short essay by Rolan Bolan – the son of Gloria Jones and Marc Bolan. RCA/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $9.99
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the slightly less-formed modes of their Warner Brothers years – finding a really badass sort of territory that would serve them well for the rest of the 70s! The shift really pays off – as there's a number of good funky numbers on the album – and some righteous political lyricism in the mix, too – but also some mellower moments that really round things out nicely. The trio riff on a version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", as led into by the cut "Something In The Air" – and other numbers include "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", "Mr. Music Man", "Goin' On a Holiday", "Open Up Your Heart", "Let Me See You In The Light", and "Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood". The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". ABC/Reel Music, 1974. Used ... $18.99
Genius work from Freda Payne – a set recorded after her bigger fame years for Invictus/Hot Wax – but a record that's done with an even deeper feel overall! The album features some key contributions from Lamont Dozier – who wasn't credited on the original record, due to his continuing contract with HDH – and his bold, righteous approach in the studio is definitely felt here – as he gives Freda the same great groove he'd hit on his own ABC albums! As with those, McKinley Jackson handles the arrangements – which work perfectly with the punctuated groove of Dozier's production – and Payne really sparkles in the setting, stretching out with these magnificent vocals that go way beyond what you might expect. The tunes are impeccable – as well-written as those on other Dozier projects of the time – loads of original numbers that include "Didn't I Tell You", "It's Yours To Have", "I Get Carried Away", "Run For Your Life", "Shadows On The Wall", and "Don't Wanna Be Left Out" – plus versions of "A Song For You" and "I Won't Last A Day". Jimmy RuffinRuff 'N Ready ... CD
SOUL/Reel Music, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A tremendous little album from Jimmy Ruffin – as "ruff" as the title implies, with a much deeper groove than you might find from other Motown releases at the time! The style here is really wonderful – rich, heartfelt vocals from Jimmy that easily match the best of the Detroit underground of the time – a style that's a bit like Darrell Banks or JJ Barnes, with echoes of the southern sound of the 60s – but produced to perfection with all the best that Motown could muster! Jimmy gets lots of heavy help from Norman Whitfield – who produced about half the tracks on the set, and gives Ruffin a sound that's somewhere between his righteous soul with the Temptations, and the best Motown grooves of his earlier work for the label. Other production is by Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier, William Weatherspoon & James Dean, and Richard Morris – all of whom follow Whitfield's lead nicely – and although the album's got few runaway hits, it's a rock-solid effort throughout – just the kind of album that makes us love the Motown full-length scene even more than the label's singles! Titles include "Lonely Lonely Man Am I", "It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You)", "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", "Everybody Needs Love", "Sad & Lonesome Feeling", "Love Gives Love Takes Away", and "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound". Great reissue package too – with excellent sound, very detailed notes, and some great vintage images! CD

Atlantic/Driven By The Music (UK), 1988. New Copy ... $42.99 50.99
Donna Summer's in the hands of 80s pop superproducers Stock/Aiken/Waterman this time around – and the trio give her music just the kind of catchy, bouncy feel of some of their bigger hits for other artists at the time! The approach is surprisingly strong for Summer, and almost returns her back to the roots of her music in the 70s – as the SAW style often uses upbeat rhythms aimed at the dancefloor, creating sort of an 80s update to Donna's earlier disco modes! The overall style and instrumentation is decidedly more in the spirit of the time, but there's a similar sense of Summer's energy in the lyrics – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", "The Only One", "Sentimental", "Breakaway", "When Love Takes Over You", and "If It Makes You Feel Good". Special reissue features the great book-style cover and notes of the others in this series – plus 2 more CDs with a whopping 27 more tracks – all mixes from a variety of singles, by Pete Hammond, Clivilles & Cole, Dave Ford, and others. The whole thing is in a cool book-style cover – with a large set of new liner notes in the booklet – and the set includes 6 unreleased mixes – "Whatever Your Heart Desires (ext club mix)", "If It Makes You Feel Good (Dave Ford album master)", "Sentimental (album long master)", "Love's About To Change My Heart (7" long rmx)", "If It Makes You Feel Good (ext feelgood mix)", and "Love's About To Change My Heart (12" rmx)". A killer classic from a time when the Chicago house scene was really taking off – that second generation of underground productions that was tagged with the "acid" term, because of the way they were using older riffs and keyboards to change things up! The Brits got that all wrong, and thought the word was a drug reference – and ended up taking way too much E in the process – but in Chicago, the term meant a new sort of sophistication for house music, and a warmer sound than the first few years too – deeper soul, more interesting keyboard parts, and a door opening to vocals and other elements that would help build a bridge between underground club and a rising tide in the mainstream. There's few records that document that shift as well as this one – a gem on the Hot Mix 5 label, put together by Mickey Oliver, who also had a hand in some of the music too. Rance Allen GroupBest Of The Rance Allen Group ... LP
Stax, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Rance Allen was one of the greatest singers on Stax who never made it during the 70s – probably because he labored in obscurity on Stax's subsidiary Truth label, a gospel imprint where Allen was unjustly stuck because of his roots in the music. Truth is, his work had as much soul as it did gospel – probably even more so as the years wore on and he started to get more secularized. The tracks on this set are as good an introduction to Allen's work as you'll find – and they're filled with great piano work (acoustic and electric), plus loads of tracks sung in Allen's rich soulful style. Titles include "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", "Ain't No Need of Crying", "I Belong To You", "Smile", "I Know A Man Who", and "I Got To Be Myself". Ashford & SimpsonLove Will Fix It – The Best Of Ashford & Simpson ... LP
Warner/Groove Line Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $15.99
A great selection of work by the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson! The pair started out doing some excellent work at Motown during the early 70s – but it wasn't until they moved to Warner in the middle of the decade that they began to emerge as the powerhouse act they became for the rest of their career. Nick and Valerie changed the face of duet soul forever – taking it past the simple boy/girl themes of 60s work by artists like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell or Maxine Brown & Chuck Jackson, into a soaring, adult, hard-grooving mode that forever changed the way male and female voices interacted in soul music. Titles include a few 12" cuts on LP for the first time – "Is It Still Good To Ya (long version)", "Love Don't Make It Right (long version)", "One More Try (long version)", and "Ain't It A Shame (long version)". Other tracks include "Found A Cure", "It Seems To Hang On", "Don't Cost You Nothing", "Over & Over", "Nobody Knows", "It Shows In The Eyes", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Send It", "Somebody Told A Lie", "I'd Know You Anywhere", "Stay Free", "Main Line", "So So Satisfied", and "Have You Ever Tried It". Patti AustinEnd Of A Rainbow (Japanese pressing) ... CD
CTI (Japan), 1976. Used ... $9.99
Wonderfully warm soul from the great Patti Austin – a key artist in the late 70s, and one who really helped push the music forward with a new sense of sophistication! Patti's got a strongly jazzy vibe here – and works with David Matthews arrangements that are really well put-together – less funky than some of Dave's other work of the period, and filled with these mellow moments that really let Austin's energy flow! The overall feel is a bit like some of Jean Carn's work on Philly International – hip, sophisticated, and filled with plenty of jazz touches – although with an even stronger approach to ballads – and titles include the classic "This Side Of Heaven", plus "More Today Than Yesterday", "Say You Love Me", "In My Life", "Give It Time", and "What's At The End Of A Rainbow". One of the biggest crossover funk groups of all time – and when the smoke finally cleared, they were actually pretty darn good musicians! AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! Polydor, 1976. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! CD

A fantastic lost chapter in the career of genius soul/jazz/funk maestro Roy Ayers – a set that was only ever issued in the UK, and which is a great second part to his Lots Of Love album on the Uno Melodic label! This album features a few tracks from that gem, but in longer versions – mixed with other cuts that were never issued in the US at the time – all with that return to perfection that Roy found on Uno Melodic – which was his own label, and one of the few times in the 80s when he matched the brilliance of his 70s recordings on Polydor! Like those albums, the style here is tight and right in the pocket, but also full of meaning and message too – beautiful songs that are catchy, but far from commercial – funky, but never dance music in a conventional way. The set kicks off with a 7:20 minute version of "Chicago" – one of our favorite Roy Ayers songs ever, natch – and other cuts include "Smiling With Our Eyes", "Good Good Music", "Keep On Movin", "Silver Vibrations", "DC City", and "Lots Of Love". BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP & CD ... On January 17, 2020
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! The genius of Roy Ayers knows no end – and as this set of unreleased work from the 70s proves, Roy was always working at top form back in the day – even above and beyond his classic albums from the time! The grooves here are tremendous – funky, soulful, jazzy, and every bit as wonderful as the work that Roy did for his classic albums on Polydor – and in a way, the whole set's even tighter and heavier than any of Roy's full LPs, because it's a distillation of his sound from the time, hand-picked from the vaults with an ear towards the kind of timeless grooves that have been a huge influence on many worlds of music for years! You've never heard any of these tunes before, but we can promise you'll love them every bit as much as Roy's tracks on albums like Coffy, Vibrations, Mystic Voyage, and other classics – and the quality of the set only further pushes our jaw-dropping respect for the man! Titles include "Holiday", "Kwajilori", "I Am Your Mind (part 2)", "Touch Of Class", "Third Time", "Come To Me", "Wide Open", "Funk In The Hole", "Liquid Love", "Tarzan", "Sunshine (demo)", and "I Like The Way You Do It To Me". A really obscure album of groovy soul – one that's got lots of different strands working together at once, in a way that may make these guys a follow-up to the work of Rotary Connection or some of the other hip groups from Chicago at the end of the 60s! The music is definitely soul, and has great lead vocals from singer Carol Williams – but there's also strands of jazz, Brazilian, and even folk music throughout – acoustic guitars, electric piano, percussion, and lots of interesting chord and time changes that really keep things interesting – even when these guys are singing songs by other artists! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Groundbreaking work from the great Mickey Baker – a postwar electric guitarist who maybe took the music from the bluesy territory of T Bone Walker, and helped push it forward to the earliest roots of rock and soul! Mickey recorded these searing singles for RCA subsidiaries Vik and Groove, plus labels that include Savoy and MGM – all in the years before he was paired with singer Sylvia Robinson in the duo Mickey & Sylvia – who would hit much greater fame later on in the decade! These tracks are heavy on hard twang from Mickey, and often feature his unbridled vocals really taking over the microphone too – all in the company of endlessly hip combo players who include King Curtis on tenor, Ray Crawford on guitar, Ray Barretto on congas, Sam Taylor on tenor, Champion Jack Dupree on piano, and Panama Francis on drums. The set ends with a few recordings with Sylvia, too – and features 28 tracks in all, with very detailed session notes and writings on Baker's career. Titles include "Guitar Mambo", "Bobi", "Guitarambo", "Please Tell Me", "Greasy Spoon", "Shake Walkin", "Rock With A Sock", "Chloe", "Woe Woe Is Me", "Hello Stranger", "I'm Tired", "Oh Happy Day", "Love Me Baby", and "Down To The Bottom". A lost classic in the funky poetry mode of the 70s – and right up there with the best work from the time by the Last Poets, Jim Ingram, or Gil Scott Heron! Bama's got a rough-edged voice that works very well with the funkier backings of the set – handled by a team that includes Bernard Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – and this rough vocal style also fits the themes of the tunes, which are still as political and righteous as other work in the genre, but a bit more down to earth as well. The music itself was arranged and composed by Jimmy Wizner and Billy Jackson – and titles include "Ghettos Of The Mind", "The Right To Be Wrong", "Nothingness", "Drunken Sister", "I Got Soul", "Welfare Slave", "Social Narcotics", and "Blackman, My Brother". ✨✧ Bar-KaysDefinitive Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The only career-spanning collection we've ever seen on The Bar-Kays – and a set that does a mighty nice job of hitting all the right bases! The group first rose to fame as a funk combo on Stax in the late 60s – then shifted a bit after part of the group was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of Otis Redding – a tragedy that soon saw the group rising from the ashes, and sounding even better than before! Their sound was a huge part of the Stax Records funk sound of the early 70s – and the group took that groove over to Mercury once the decade got going – where they found a very welcome home, and the perfect environment to perfect their ultra-sharp talents. Unlike some groups who started out funky, then went smooth and commercial, The Bar-Kays never lost the qualities that made them great – and even when recording for a bigger label, with a bigger budget, they continued to turn out rock-solid rhythms laced with super-tight instrumentation – even at times when some groups were letting more machines do all the work for them. This 3CD set follows The Bar-Kays on that long musical journey, complete with a big booklet of notes that tell their full story – and the package features 46 tracks in all – including "Shine", "Up In Here", "I'll Dance", "She Talks To Me With Her Body", "Soul Finger", "Bar-Kays Boogaloo", "Sang & Dance", "Son Of Shaft", "Spellbound", "Cozy", "Freaky Behavior", "Traffic Jammer", "Nightcruising", "Animal", "Stuck By You", "Banging On The Walls", "Don't Stop Dancing To The Music", "Six O'Clock News Report", "Money Talks", "Holy Ghost", "Shake Your Rump To The Funk", "Cozy", "Whitehouseorgy", "Shut The Funk Up", and "Today Is The Day". Amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Folkways, 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. A great collection of work from Regina Belle – one that features a number of remixes, singles, and collaborations – as well as the album tracks that made her one of the most rock-solid female soul singers at the end of the 80s! At some level, Regina's a singer from another time – the kind of vocalist with a soaring, powerful style that would have been right at home in both the club styles and mellower modes of the 70s – but which also makes for a great match here in an assortment of catchy tunes, quiet storm numbers, and some great midtempo charmers. Given the more electric instrumentation often used in these productions, the richness of Belle's voice really helps ground these tunes – and the package features a total of 29 tracks that include "Love TKO", "You Got The Love (rmx)", "Show Me The Way", "Please Be Mine", "After The Love Has Lost Its Shine", "How Could You Do It To Me (rmx)", "Good Lovin", "Make It Like It Was", "I'll Be Around", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "So Many Tears (cool mix)", "Someday We'll All Be Free/Save The Children", "Interlude/Passion", and "Do You Wanna Get Serious" – plus duets "Better Together" with Johnny Mathis, "I Can't Imagine" with Peabo Bryson, and "All I Want Is Forever" by JT Taylor. Cotillion, 1969. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Brook Benton had one of the most distinctive voices in soul music, and he's in great form on this oft-overlooked session for Atlantic from 1969. Part of the record tries to recreate Brook's earlier Southern Soul style hits – and while those tracks works well, we think the best stuff on the record is the slightly Bacharach-ish material recorded in New York. The title track, "Do Your Own Thing", is a beautiful mellow number by Leiber & Stoller, and it features sweet strings, and a fantastic lilting uptown groove. Other nice ones include "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and "Set Me Free". LP, Vinyl record album
