✨✧ VariousStrange Funky Games & Things – Solid Rare Grooves & Smoking Seventies Soul (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 3LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The brilliant return of one of our favorite funky series ever – filled with top-shelf rarities that represent the best of 70s rare groove and break tracks! It's been a long time since we last saw a volume of Strange Games, but this set shows that it's been more than worth the wait – as BBE have come up with a batch of tunes so great, they must have been working on this one for years! As with other volumes, the names are familiar, but the cuts are all surprisingly hard to find – and they're all hand-picked for their resonance with modern use of the material in hip hop and remix culture – an aspect that makes even obscure tunes echo with a strong familiarity because of a bassline or drum break! And as an added treat, the CD and vinyl both have the same number of tracks – an increasingly rare phenomenon these days – with titles that include "Love & Happiness" by Monty Alexander, "She's My Summer Breeze" by The Reflections, "Come Into My Life" by The Supremes, "LA Night" by Yasuko Agawa, "Looking Up To You" by Michael Wycoff, "Give Me Your Love" by Barbara Mason, "Inside Out" by American Gypsy, "You Are What I'm All About" by The New Birth, "Loving You" by Donald Byrd, "Porcupine" by Nature Zone, "Strange Funky Games & Things" by Jay Dee, "Do It Baby" by The Miracles, "California Dreaming" by Eddie Hazel, and "Reflections" by Bill Conti. (Funky Compilations, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes insert. Cover has a light bump in one corner, and a few small scratches near the bottom – but this is an excellent copy overall.)

✨✧ Harvey MasonSho Nuff Groovin You – The Arista Records Anthology 1975 to 1981 ... CD
Arista/Big Break (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Sho nuff grooves from the great Harvey Mason – a jazz drummer at heart, but one whose talents also exploded into the realm of funk and soul in the second half of the 70s! Mason was part of a big generation of jazzmen who moved into soul – drummers like Billy Cobham and Norman Connors, or other talents like Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson – all of whom we'd use as a comparison to Harvey's excellent work on this collection! With his own drums at the core, Mason was able to open things up in so many ways – inviting in some of the cream of the crop of the fusion scene to work on his records – and also working with top-shelf vocalists like Merry Clayton or Randy Crawford, although Harvey also delivered some great vocals of his own! The 2CD set brings together the best cuts from Harvey's years at Arista Records – a great run of albums that sound even better here, condensed into a 33 track offering that also includes some 12" mixes and unusual moments. Titles include "Groovin You (12" mix)", "Here Today Gone Tomorrow", "First Summer", "Modaji", "Marching In The Street", "KY & The Cur", "Wild Rice", "Wave", "The Mase", "We Can Start Tonight", "Till You Take My Love", "On & On", "Space Cadets", "Sho Nuff Groove", "Universal Rhyme", "Funk In A Mason Jar", "Never Give You Up", "Say It Again", "When I'm With You (live)", "What's Going On", "Earthmover Prelude", "Bertha Baptist", "Ballad For Heather", "Set It Free", and "Going Through The Motions". ✨✧ Phil UpchurchFree & Easy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Jam/Big Pink (South Korea), 1982. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Free and easy grooves from the great Phil Upchurch – a set that has the guitarist evolving more strongly into the world of fusion, after beginning his career with instrumental soul, shifting to heavier funk, and continuing to really open up his jazz chops as the years went by! Here, Phil's playing with a great lineup that includes plenty of soulful tenor from Eddie Harris, billed as having a "saxophone attachment" – which might be an update of his earlier Varitone sound – plus lots of nice work on keyboards from Russ Ferrante, and bass from Phil's son too. The great Harvey Mason sets the groove on drums – and titles include "Groovin Slow", "Midnite Blue", "Free & Easy", "Reunion", "Moment's Notice", and a nice take on "People Make The World Go Round". (Jazz, Soul) CD

✨✧ Barbara MasonLet Me Give You Love/She's Got the Papers (But I Got the Man) ... 12-inch
WMOT, 1981. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
"She's Got The Papers" is a much later entry in the Shirley Brown/Barbara Mason song cycle started way back at the beginning of the 70s – that tug-of-war about a shared man and all the things bought and bills paid – hence the title! Barbara may not have the papers on all the stuff the guy owns, but she's got the guy in the end – and she sings it mellow and sweet, in a great blend of southern and modern soul styles – all produced with a gentle sort of edge by Butch Ingram! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Barbara MasonLady Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Buddah/Soul Brother (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album for Barbara Mason – one in which she takes the little girl soul sound of earlier albums, and turns it into a sophisticated range of emotions that foreshadows later Philly work by singers like Jean Carn and Phyllis Hyman! Despite the Philly arrangements by Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana, there's actually a bit of a southern twinge to the record – an aspect that works nicely on the ballad cuts, which have kind of an Ann Sexton or Shirley Brown feel to them – sophisticated female soul at its best, and a real change overall for Barbara. Features the uptempo extended political cut "World War Three", plus "All in Love is Fair", "Bed and Board", "Caught in The Middle", "I Miss You Gordon", and "Me and Mr. Jones", her cover of the Billy Paul hit, and a nice version too! Includes the bonus track "Child Of Tomorrow". CD

✨✧ Brothers JohnsonLook Out For #1 ... LP
A&M, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An all-star soul affair produced by Quincy Jones, and featuring the talents of studio greats like Harvey Mason, Billy Cobham, Toots Thielmans, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, and many others – not to mention the Brothers themselves! We'll be honest, though, in saying that we really think it's the great jazzy backing and the tight arrangements by Quincy that make this record so great. The Brothers' bass and vocal work is fine – but it's the non-bass instrumental moments that really make this album great, as you'll hear on cuts like the moog-heavy "Tomorrow", or the timbales/keyboard/flute groover "Thunder Thumbs & Lightnin Licks". Great stuff if you dig mid 70s work by Q – and featuring the tracks "I'll Be Good To You", "Land Of Ladies", "Free & Single", "Get The Funk Out Ma Face", and "The Devil". LP, Vinyl record album
