LighthouseLighthouse/Suite Feeling/Peacing It All Together ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of albums by this very unique group – all brought together in one mighty nice package! First up is the self-titled Lighthouse album – the first record by Lighthouse – a strange band that's always incredibly hard to peg, but who have a sound that we always end up liking a lot! The group mix together folk rock styles with a touch of soul and funk – going for some nice grooves that build up from lots of drum work and airy vocal production, touched here by lots of horns, in a style that's a bit like Blood Sweat & Tears, but a lot lot cooler! This first album is something of a landmark in the jazz/rock vein – and titles include "Never Say Goodbye", "Follow The Stars", "Mountain Man", "Whatever Forever", "Marsha Marsha", and a great cover of "Eight Miles High". Suite Feeling is a record with a full, spacious sound – one that definitely lives up to the "suite feeling" you'd expect! The style here is even more sophisticated than on the group's debut – still a mix of jazzy horns and rockish rhythms, but fused together even more perfectly – but with a leanness that's a good contrast to some of the more overblown groups of the same generation! There's just the right balance here to allow some standout solos – on horns, natch, but also some sweet Hammond too – and a young Howard Shore is also in the group on alto sax, and handled some of the arrangements for the record. Titles include a great version of "A Day In The Life" – plus originals "Taking A Walk", "Could You Be Concerned", "Chest Fever", "Feel So Good", "Places On Faces Four Blue Carpet Traces", and "What Sense". Last up is Peacing It All Together – maybe the most complex album so far from Lighthouse – a set that begins with some great heavy drums, then rolls into the group's trademark blend of jazzy riffing, rocking rhythms, and soaring arrangements! There's a bit more Sunshine Pop in Lighthouse compared to some of their contemporaries in the jazz rock world at the start of the 70s – no attempts to be unnaturally soulful in the lyrics, nor too posturing either – and instead, there's almost a vocal gentleness that makes for a nice counterpoint to the full instrumental modes of the large horn-heavy ensemble. A few cuts get nice and funky, and titles include "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo/Let The Happiness Begin", "The Country Song", "Sausalito", "The Fiction Of Twenty Six Million", "On My Way To LA", and "Daughters & Sons". ✨✧ VariousSvenska Shakers – R&B Crunchers, Mod Grooves, Freakbeat, & Psych Pop From Sweden 1964 to 1968 ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Cool combos from the Swedish scene of the 60s – a surprising north European hotbed of garagey grooves that were every bit as gritty as sounds from the US! In fact, these guys owe nothing to The Seeds or Sonics – as most are recording at right around the same time, and have a similarly rough-edged approach that's totally great – heavy guitars, often turned up to the point of distortion – lots of romping rhythms from frenetic drums – and vocals that maybe borrow a bit of the tunefulness of the Brit Invasion generation, but which are a bit more sinister overall! Most of these cuts are way more than just indie obscurities, too – as the bulk of the work here was recorded by big labels in Sweden – Decca, Columbia, Parlophone, and others – which results in superb production and presentation that really fits the style of the music. The Swedes kept their garage scene going for many years later – with superb work well into the early 90s – but this superbly-selected, 2CD set is the wellspring of that long cultural tradition – with 41 titles that include "Fantasy Island" by The Tages, "Don't Run & Hide" by Stringtones, "I Want To Live" by Mascots, "Bo Bo Boogie Pack" by Annabee Nox, "Misery Is Such A Mystery" by John Julian & Curt Gorans, "Smiling" by Darling, "A Flower In My Garden" by The Hep Stars, "I Set A Fire" by Science Poption, "Baby I Want To Know" by Fools, "Hurt By Love" by Deans "Let Me Show You Who I Am" by Shanes, "Do Ano" by Namelosers, "Daddy Rolling Stone" by Horanges, and "Come On" by Moonjacks. ✨✧ VariousTres Chic – More French Girl Singers Of The 60s ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Groovy gals from 60s France – a power-packed array of Parisian pop nuggets that goes way beyond most other compilations of this nature! Some of the big names are here, but there's way more obscure numbers too – the cool kind of French femmes that made a bit splash during the "yeh yeh" generation, with a mix of the rough and the sweet that few other girl singers could ever hope to touch! There's a really special mod sort of energy here – vocals that push out strongly, yet never succumb to emotional cliches of American and British singers – and backings that are always tight and groovy, but in a jaunty, jerky way that's quite different than straight ahead rock. The mix of modes is completely sublime – just the sort of music that still really sends us after all these years – and titles include "J'Ai Des Problemes Decidement" by Violaine, "Hymne Au Soleil" by Pussy Cat, "Attends Ou Va-T'En" by France Gall, "Tomorrow Is Another Day" by Gillian Hills, "Bravo" by Jacqueline Taieb, "Pas De Taxi" by Annie Philippe, "La Fermeture Eclair" by Delphine, "Les Paillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Comme Tu Es Jeune" by Liz Brady, "Sous Le Soleil Exactement" by Anna Karina, and "Ecoutez" by Elsa. ✨✧ VariousWhere The Girls Are Vol 6 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare female pop sounds from the 60s – a killer collection of soul and rock nuggets, most of which were only issued on small label singles, and hardly saw any exposure back in the day! Yet the work here is every bit as great as bit girl pop hits of the period – maybe even better, because you haven't been hit over the head with it all your life – and can just dive in and really enjoy the wonderful vocals, sublime production, and hip arrangements that make this era such a great one for the growing wave of more dynamic female singers in the US scene. As with previous volumes, the overall package is as wonderful as the track selection – great notes and a vivid look that really adds a lot to the sounds on the CD – sounds that are sublime, and include "Lost" by The Darlettes, "Little Baby" by Kathy Lynn & The Playboys, "Cupid's Got a Hold On Me" by The Belles, "Yes I Know" by The Ladybirds, "My Imaginary Guy" by Deanie Parker & The Valadors, "Big Time Operator" by Joan Moody, "Captured By Your Love" by Felice Taylor, "Jilted" by The Goodees, "I Can't Hear You" by Pat Powdrill, and "Walk Tall" by The 2 Of Clubs. Bagatelle11pm Saturday ... LP
ABC, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $3.99
A heck of a great batch of blue eyed soul tracks – much harder-hitting than you'd expect from the name of the group, and done with a "live studio" feel that really makes the session kick! The group's a big one, of mixed origin – of the sort of party club type acts that used to play a lot in the south in the 60s – and alongside original tunes, they also really groove on some upbeat numbers in a soaring Sam & Dave sort of mode. Titles include "I've Been Trying", "I'm Losing You", "Hey You", "Such A Fuss About Sunday", "Soul Man", "Shake", and "I Feel Good". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Band Without A Name, Sidewalk Sounds, & OthersThunder Alley ... LP
Sidewalk, 1967. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A wild little soundtrack that's equal parts biker and hot rod – a great rocking rarity that really bridges two sub-genres of rockish sounds in the 60s! The set's one of Mike Curb's great soundtracks for AIP – and like some of the others, it features a set of lesser-known talents coming together in a batch of tracks that works equally well as a rock album or a soundtrack! Some cuts have vocals, other feature fuzzy guitars riffing away instrumentally – a bit more surf/hot rod than psych, but still nice and trippy at times – and the lineup features the great "Theme From Thunder Alley" by Band Without A Name –plus "Pete's Orgy" and "Mud Fight" by The Sidewalk Sounds, "Calahan's Theme" by The Lorraine Singers, "When You Get What You Want" by Annette, and "Riot In Thunder Alley" by Eddie Beram – which is an excellent drum and sitar track that is worth the price of the album alone! Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy ... On September 22, 2017
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". (Out Sound, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Blonde On BlondeRebirth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $12.99
These guys may have a name that evokes a Bob Dylan album, but their sound is something else entirely – a magical blend of simple instruments in a really unique way – and a songwriting voice that really sets these guys apart from the rest! There were so many great UK groups at the end of the 60s, that possible giants like these guys often got buried in the release schedule of the labels – even though they've got a fully-formed sound right from the start, and a lyrical confidence that's very unique. The music's a bit psych, and not entirely prog – but also reaching for something bigger than any sound of a few years before – and even though the instrumentation is by the very familiar trio of guitar, bass, and drums, there's definitely something special about it – as is also the case with the lead vocals of singer David Thomas. Titles including "Castles In The Sky", "Circles", "Broken Hours", "Heart Without A Home", "Colour Questions", "You'll Never Know Me/Release" and "Time Is Passing". CD features bonus tracks – "Circles (single version)", "Castles In The Sky (alt version)", and "Time Is Passing (alt version)". CD

Ember/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $12.99
That's a really trippy cover on this second album from Blonde On Blonde – and the sound is nicely trippy, too – a bit more complex than on their debut album – with just the right dose of psych elements thrown into the mix of their well-crafted songs! Acoustic guitar actually gets a bit more place in the sound than before, but there's also a balance of more electronic effects, additional percussion, and even some use of banjo and harmonica to give the group a slight roots element they never had before – one that's maybe a bit more in keeping with their Dylan-referenced name, but with a result that's leaning more towards UK acid folk than anything from America. Titles include "Gene Machine", "Sad Song For An Easy Lady", "The Bargain", "The Rut", "Happy Families", and "No 2 Psychological Decontamination Unit". CD features a bonus track – "Sad Song For An Easy Lady (single version)". CD

Brady BunchMeet The Brady Bunch ... LP
Paramount, 1972. Very Good ... $9.99
Surprisingly great work from The Brady Bunch – a sextet of kids on early 70s TV, but who also got some very strong Sunshine Pop help for their records at the time! There's a sunny, sing-song feel to most of these tunes – but a vibe that goes past other kiddie pop of the period, like work by Donny Osmond or Bobby Sherman – who never got the same kind of handling as the Brady kids! The great Al Capp handled arrangements, and brings in a surprising amount of groovy touches – and the songs include a number of originals penned by the team of Danny Janssen and producer Jackie Mills – plus one number by Curt Boettcher as well. Titles include the classic "We Can Make The World A Whole Lot Brighter – plus "We'll Always Be Friends", "Day After Day", "Baby-I'm A Want You", "I Believe In You", "American Pie", "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", and "Ain't It Crazy". Braen's MachineTemi Ritmici E Dinamici (with bonus CD) ... LP
Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. Titles include "Movimento", "Dinimica", "Gara", "Passeggiata", "Aspetti Grotteschi", "Esercizi Ginnici", "Ritmica Sportiva", and "Rinuncia". (Sound Library, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. Titles include "Trip Thru Hell" – in two parts – plus "Sleepy Hollow Lane", "Smooth As Silk", "Cold Spider", and "Colorado Mourning". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny CashJohnny Cash at San Quentin ... LP
Columbia/Sundazed, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set – a set might be an even more remarkable portrait of the Man In Black at his raucous best than the uber legendary Live At Folsom Prison! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. Tracks include "I Walk The Line", "Darling Companion", "San Quentin", "Wanted Man", "Peace In The Valley", "Wreck Of Old 97" and more. (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
