LighthouseLighthouse/Suite Feeling/Peacing It All Together ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of albums by this very unique group – all brought together in one mighty nice package! First up is the self-titled Lighthouse album – the first record by Lighthouse – a strange band that's always incredibly hard to peg, but who have a sound that we always end up liking a lot! The group mix together folk rock styles with a touch of soul and funk – going for some nice grooves that build up from lots of drum work and airy vocal production, touched here by lots of horns, in a style that's a bit like Blood Sweat & Tears, but a lot lot cooler! This first album is something of a landmark in the jazz/rock vein – and titles include "Never Say Goodbye", "Follow The Stars", "Mountain Man", "Whatever Forever", "Marsha Marsha", and a great cover of "Eight Miles High". Suite Feeling is a record with a full, spacious sound – one that definitely lives up to the "suite feeling" you'd expect! The style here is even more sophisticated than on the group's debut – still a mix of jazzy horns and rockish rhythms, but fused together even more perfectly – but with a leanness that's a good contrast to some of the more overblown groups of the same generation! There's just the right balance here to allow some standout solos – on horns, natch, but also some sweet Hammond too – and a young Howard Shore is also in the group on alto sax, and handled some of the arrangements for the record. Titles include a great version of "A Day In The Life" – plus originals "Taking A Walk", "Could You Be Concerned", "Chest Fever", "Feel So Good", "Places On Faces Four Blue Carpet Traces", and "What Sense". Last up is Peacing It All Together – maybe the most complex album so far from Lighthouse – a set that begins with some great heavy drums, then rolls into the group's trademark blend of jazzy riffing, rocking rhythms, and soaring arrangements! There's a bit more Sunshine Pop in Lighthouse compared to some of their contemporaries in the jazz rock world at the start of the 70s – no attempts to be unnaturally soulful in the lyrics, nor too posturing either – and instead, there's almost a vocal gentleness that makes for a nice counterpoint to the full instrumental modes of the large horn-heavy ensemble. A few cuts get nice and funky, and titles include "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo/Let The Happiness Begin", "The Country Song", "Sausalito", "The Fiction Of Twenty Six Million", "On My Way To LA", and "Daughters & Sons". ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ VariousTruckers, Kickers, Cowboy Angels – The Blissed-Out Birth Of Country Rock Vol 2 – 1969 ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing second chapter to this wonderful series – and like the first, a perfectly-chosen batch of tracks that shows the return of country styles to rock music at the end of the 60s! Most of the artists here are those of the LA scene – who had a surprisingly strong respect for the sounds of Bakersfield and Nashville – but the set also includes some other artists who really fit into the mix well – almost all of them big names of the time, or of later years – but working here in a sound that's still very fresh, and free from all the cliches that crept into country rock in the 70s! Bear Family really took a lot of care with the whole thing – and the set features over 50 pages of notes, telling the track-by-track tale of country rock from 1969 – a set of 23 titles that includes "Level With Your Sense" by The Corvettes, "Sin City" by The Flying Burrito Brothers, "Texas Me" by Sir Douglas Quintet, "Drug Store Truck Driving Man" by The Byrds, "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band, "Make Me Smile" by Poco, "We Need A Whole Lot More Jesus" by Linda Ronstadt, "Ruby" by The First Edition, "I'm Movin On" by Elvis Presley, "Vaccination For The Blues" by The Sanland Brothers, and "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass" by Buck Owens. Bagatelle11pm Saturday ... LP
ABC, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $0.99
A heck of a great batch of blue eyed soul tracks – much harder-hitting than you'd expect from the name of the group, and done with a "live studio" feel that really makes the session kick! The group's a big one, of mixed origin – of the sort of party club type acts that used to play a lot in the south in the 60s – and alongside original tunes, they also really groove on some upbeat numbers in a soaring Sam & Dave sort of mode. Titles include "I've Been Trying", "I'm Losing You", "Hey You", "Such A Fuss About Sunday", "Soul Man", "Shake", and "I Feel Good". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Band Without A Name, Sidewalk Sounds, & OthersThunder Alley ... LP
Sidewalk, 1967. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A wild little soundtrack that's equal parts biker and hot rod – a great rocking rarity that really bridges two sub-genres of rockish sounds in the 60s! The set's one of Mike Curb's great soundtracks for AIP – and like some of the others, it features a set of lesser-known talents coming together in a batch of tracks that works equally well as a rock album or a soundtrack! Some cuts have vocals, other feature fuzzy guitars riffing away instrumentally – a bit more surf/hot rod than psych, but still nice and trippy at times – and the lineup features the great "Theme From Thunder Alley" by Band Without A Name –plus "Pete's Orgy" and "Mud Fight" by The Sidewalk Sounds, "Calahan's Theme" by The Lorraine Singers, "When You Get What You Want" by Annette, and "Riot In Thunder Alley" by Eddie Beram – which is an excellent drum and sitar track that is worth the price of the album alone! Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy ... About October 20, 2017
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". (Out Sound, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Blonde On BlondeRebirth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $7.99
These guys may have a name that evokes a Bob Dylan album, but their sound is something else entirely – a magical blend of simple instruments in a really unique way – and a songwriting voice that really sets these guys apart from the rest! There were so many great UK groups at the end of the 60s, that possible giants like these guys often got buried in the release schedule of the labels – even though they've got a fully-formed sound right from the start, and a lyrical confidence that's very unique. The music's a bit psych, and not entirely prog – but also reaching for something bigger than any sound of a few years before – and even though the instrumentation is by the very familiar trio of guitar, bass, and drums, there's definitely something special about it – as is also the case with the lead vocals of singer David Thomas. Titles including "Castles In The Sky", "Circles", "Broken Hours", "Heart Without A Home", "Colour Questions", "You'll Never Know Me/Release" and "Time Is Passing". CD features bonus tracks – "Circles (single version)", "Castles In The Sky (alt version)", and "Time Is Passing (alt version)". CD

Braen's MachineTemi Ritmici E Dinamici (with bonus CD) ... LP
Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. Titles include "Movimento", "Dinimica", "Gara", "Passeggiata", "Aspetti Grotteschi", "Esercizi Ginnici", "Ritmica Sportiva", and "Rinuncia". (Sound Library, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. Titles include "Trip Thru Hell" – in two parts – plus "Sleepy Hollow Lane", "Smooth As Silk", "Cold Spider", and "Colorado Mourning". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set – a set might be an even more remarkable portrait of the Man In Black at his raucous best than the uber legendary Live At Folsom Prison! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. ✨✧ Eugene ChadbourneLost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions ... CD
No Prestige/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99
Magnificent early work from Eugene Chadbourne – a set that was recorded on Christmas Day, 1977 – and only issued a decade later on cassette – but sounds that are every bit as mindblowing as the material on Chadbourne's first few albums! The music here is heavy on compositions from Thelonious Monk – and the set also features Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman tunes too – all reworked by Chadbourne with this incredible acoustic guitar style – very freewheeling, but still tied to the roots of jazz through a sense of melody – in ways that are maybe even more illustrative of his role in the scene than some of his other work. At one level, there's an acoustic guitar craft here that stretches back to the early blues recordings, but through a strong sense of avant freedom – ala Captain Beefheart – but Eugene's care with the tunes, mixed with his expressive phrasing, also put him in a space that's somewhere between the world of Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, and that of jazzman Barney Kessel, whose name he's holding in the poster on the cover. Titles include "5th Of Beethoven", "Reflections", "Off Minor", "San Francisco", "Hackensack", "Dewey Square", "Central Park West", "Brilliant Corners", and "Light Blue". Also includes a number of Chadbourne originals – and unissued tracks as well! (Jazz, Rock) CD

ColosseumValentyne Suite/Grass Is Greener (with bonus track) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy ... $15.99
Fantastic work from Colosseum – a pair of records that really stand out as completely unique hybrids from the British jazz rock years! Although Colosseum are probably best known as a progressive band, they certainly had plenty of jazz touches – and Valentyne Suite spawned the great groover "Elegy", which has become something of a jazzy dancefloor classic over the years. Overall, the record's got some very tight drumming, plenty of wailing organ work, and a basic groove that takes off where the beat groups of the 60s left off. Also includes "The Kettle", "Butty's Blues", and on this Esoteric CD version, the bonus track "Tell Me Now"– on top of the freer jazzy "Valentyne Suite" for which the album is named! This great 2CD version includes all the tracks from both the Grass Is Greener LP on CD two – which is the Dunhill US alternative LP released in 1970, with "Jumping Off The Sun", "Lost Angeles", "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "The Grass Is Always Greener" and more. Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name!
