LighthouseLighthouse/Suite Feeling/Peacing It All Together ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of albums by this very unique group – all brought together in one mighty nice package! First up is the self-titled Lighthouse album – the first record by Lighthouse – a strange band that's always incredibly hard to peg, but who have a sound that we always end up liking a lot! The group mix together folk rock styles with a touch of soul and funk – going for some nice grooves that build up from lots of drum work and airy vocal production, touched here by lots of horns, in a style that's a bit like Blood Sweat & Tears, but a lot lot cooler! This first album is something of a landmark in the jazz/rock vein – and titles include "Never Say Goodbye", "Follow The Stars", "Mountain Man", "Whatever Forever", "Marsha Marsha", and a great cover of "Eight Miles High". Suite Feeling is a record with a full, spacious sound – one that definitely lives up to the "suite feeling" you'd expect! The style here is even more sophisticated than on the group's debut – still a mix of jazzy horns and rockish rhythms, but fused together even more perfectly – but with a leanness that's a good contrast to some of the more overblown groups of the same generation! There's just the right balance here to allow some standout solos – on horns, natch, but also some sweet Hammond too – and a young Howard Shore is also in the group on alto sax, and handled some of the arrangements for the record. Titles include a great version of "A Day In The Life" – plus originals "Taking A Walk", "Could You Be Concerned", "Chest Fever", "Feel So Good", "Places On Faces Four Blue Carpet Traces", and "What Sense". Last up is Peacing It All Together – maybe the most complex album so far from Lighthouse – a set that begins with some great heavy drums, then rolls into the group's trademark blend of jazzy riffing, rocking rhythms, and soaring arrangements! There's a bit more Sunshine Pop in Lighthouse compared to some of their contemporaries in the jazz rock world at the start of the 70s – no attempts to be unnaturally soulful in the lyrics, nor too posturing either – and instead, there's almost a vocal gentleness that makes for a nice counterpoint to the full instrumental modes of the large horn-heavy ensemble. A few cuts get nice and funky, and titles include "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo/Let The Happiness Begin", "The Country Song", "Sausalito", "The Fiction Of Twenty Six Million", "On My Way To LA", and "Daughters & Sons". ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ VariousTruckers, Kickers, Cowboy Angels – The Blissed-Out Birth Of Country Rock Vol 2 – 1969 ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing second chapter to this wonderful series – and like the first, a perfectly-chosen batch of tracks that shows the return of country styles to rock music at the end of the 60s! Most of the artists here are those of the LA scene – who had a surprisingly strong respect for the sounds of Bakersfield and Nashville – but the set also includes some other artists who really fit into the mix well – almost all of them big names of the time, or of later years – but working here in a sound that's still very fresh, and free from all the cliches that crept into country rock in the 70s! Bear Family really took a lot of care with the whole thing – and the set features over 50 pages of notes, telling the track-by-track tale of country rock from 1969 – a set of 23 titles that includes "Level With Your Sense" by The Corvettes, "Sin City" by The Flying Burrito Brothers, "Texas Me" by Sir Douglas Quintet, "Drug Store Truck Driving Man" by The Byrds, "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band, "Make Me Smile" by Poco, "We Need A Whole Lot More Jesus" by Linda Ronstadt, "Ruby" by The First Edition, "I'm Movin On" by Elvis Presley, "Vaccination For The Blues" by The Sanland Brothers, and "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass" by Buck Owens. ✨✧ VariousWhen Sharpies Ruled – A Vicious Selection ... CD
Festival/Warner (Australia), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the Australian sharpies scene of the 70s – a post-mod, pre-punk underground that really helped give the nation its first strong voice in rock and roll! The sharpies took their name from the sharply-dressed style they used in the 60s – but by the time of this music, they were much leaner (and maybe meaner) – a rollicking force at public events, with the kind of energy that demanded superfueled sounds to keep them going! Much of this work is in the territory of UK pub rock – kind of back to basics material that shakes off any too-progressive elements, yet still has the technical sharpness of that generation – with some of the harder rock energy that fueled groups like Slade or AC/DC. Only a few of these acts were familiar to our ears – which makes the set a huge discovery, complete with very helpful notes that explain the subtleties of the scene. Titles include "Out Of Control" by Finch, "Time Shapes" by Coloured Balls, "Roll Daddy Roll" by Fat Daddy, "Riff In My Head" by Hush, "Horror Movie" by Skyhooks, "Hard Road" by Stevie Wright, "Jump In My Car" by Ted Mulry Gang, "Movin" by Fatty Lumpkin, "Remedy" by Rose Tattoo, "I Like It Both Ways" by Supernaut, and "Wildfire" by Rabbit. CD package also comes with a great book – filled with rare snapshots and photographs from the scene! CD

Apple, 1971. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Badfinger's early 70s win streak continues on Straight Up – a straight up classic set of tuneful 70s rock with big emotions and catchy songs – one that keeps just enough grit underneath those killer melodies! Titles include "Take It All", "Bably Blue", "Name Of The Game", "Perfection", "It's Over", "Sometimes" and more. This might be the group's most consistent batch of songs to date, and it's essential early 70s rock for sure. LP, Vinyl record album

Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". (Out Sound, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Blonde On BlondeRebirth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $7.99
These guys may have a name that evokes a Bob Dylan album, but their sound is something else entirely – a magical blend of simple instruments in a really unique way – and a songwriting voice that really sets these guys apart from the rest! There were so many great UK groups at the end of the 60s, that possible giants like these guys often got buried in the release schedule of the labels – even though they've got a fully-formed sound right from the start, and a lyrical confidence that's very unique. The music's a bit psych, and not entirely prog – but also reaching for something bigger than any sound of a few years before – and even though the instrumentation is by the very familiar trio of guitar, bass, and drums, there's definitely something special about it – as is also the case with the lead vocals of singer David Thomas. Titles including "Castles In The Sky", "Circles", "Broken Hours", "Heart Without A Home", "Colour Questions", "You'll Never Know Me/Release" and "Time Is Passing". CD features bonus tracks – "Circles (single version)", "Castles In The Sky (alt version)", and "Time Is Passing (alt version)". CD

Johnny CashJohnny Cash At San Quentin – Complete 1969 Concert (2CD/DVD) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1969. Used 2CD & DVD ... $13.99
Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set, released in its entirety for the first time with the 9 songs left off of the original LP! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. Tracks include "I Walk The Line", "Darlin' Companion", "San Quentin", "Wanted Man", "There'll Be Peace In The Valley", "Ring Of Fire", "He Turned The Water Into Wine", "Daddy Sang Bass", "I Don't Know Where I'm Bound" and more. 31 tracks in all, with lots of previously unreleased photos and essays, including some insight from Merle Haggard – who had, uh, his own little gig at San Quentin if you catch my meaning. Also features a DVD documentary on the show. (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

ColosseumValentyne Suite/Grass Is Greener (with bonus track) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy ... $15.99
Fantastic work from Colosseum – a pair of records that really stand out as completely unique hybrids from the British jazz rock years! Although Colosseum are probably best known as a progressive band, they certainly had plenty of jazz touches – and Valentyne Suite spawned the great groover "Elegy", which has become something of a jazzy dancefloor classic over the years. Overall, the record's got some very tight drumming, plenty of wailing organ work, and a basic groove that takes off where the beat groups of the 60s left off. Also includes "The Kettle", "Butty's Blues", and on this Esoteric CD version, the bonus track "Tell Me Now"– on top of the freer jazzy "Valentyne Suite" for which the album is named! This great 2CD version includes all the tracks from both the Grass Is Greener LP on CD two – which is the Dunhill US alternative LP released in 1970, with "Jumping Off The Sun", "Lost Angeles", "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "The Grass Is Always Greener" and more. Country Joe & The FishI Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vanguard/Craft, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... On January 26, 2018
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". Long Hair (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An obscure German group who take their name from the second album by Love – stepping out here in a style that maybe has some of the best influences from that famous group! Like Love, these guys clearly have a blues rock core, but quickly open up to more lyrical and personal moments – mixing acoustic and electric guitar at once, and really just letting the strings of the instruments weave their tale with the drums – while the words of the tunes have a quality that's quite different in spirit from the Krautrock you might expect. Most tracks are relatively sort – and titles include "Free", "Future", "Find My Way Home", "Young Man", and "Can Smile" – but side two also features a long jam titled "A Day In The Rest Of My Life" – again, maybe a bit like the second album by Love! LP reissue also features the bonus track "Marijuana". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4LP ... $89.99 99.99
Dylan on the road from the late 70s to early 80s – bringing words and wisdom that are more spiritually inspired than anything he'd put out before – backed by some of the most soulful arrangements and players he's ever had behind him! Trouble No More is all unreleased material and focuses on the live shows in support of what's since been dubbed Dylan's "Christian Period" – which is essentially true – and has long been ripe for a reassessment. The gravelly nature of his voice in the later years, which kind of begin here, gives it a really passionate vibe, while the bluesy soul arrangements and gospel style backing singers provide such a lovely backdrop. All tracks are previously unreleased, and captured live from throughout the 1979-1981 tours – with a few that were never on any Dylan studio albums at all, making the live recordings all the more vital! 4LP set (which comes with the full set on 2CDs, too) includes versions of "Slow Train Coming", "Gotta Serve Somebody","I Believe In You", "When You Gonna Wake Up?", "Gonna Change My Way Of Feeling", "In The Garden", "Every Grain Of Sand", "Previous Angel", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Saving Grace", the unheard and unreleased "Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody", "Ain't No Man Righteous" and "Blessed Is The Name". Innovative Leisure, 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 13.98
A sprawling stunner from Hanni El Khatib – who doesn't leave behind the gritty, yet melodic garage rock and soul sounds he's done so well on an ALREADY diversely inspired career-to-date – it's just that he just does SO much more on Savage Times. We loved the raucous, tight blasts of timeless raw rock with soul he's made his name on so far, but Hanni has a lot more in his wheelhouse – from more angular, skronkier takes on the style, to more subtle and melodious tunes than he's ever done – his range is pretty incredible, but it's unmistakably his own. Impressive stuff! 19 in all: "Baby's OK", "Gonna Die Alone", "Born Brown", "Paralyzed", "Come Down", "No Way", "Black Constellation", "So Dusty", "Mangos & Rice", "Miracle", "Hole Me Back", "Till Your Rose Comes Home", "Savage Time" and more – plus 4 bonus songs: "1AM", "Peep Show", "This I Know" and "Freak Freely".
