BlackoutBlackout ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1967. New Copy ... $11.99
Wonderful work from one of the grooviest groups going in mid 60s Poland – a combo with a sound that shares some of the best tendencies of German and British groups of the time, but which also has a hipper, more complicated vibe overall! Instrumentation here is heavy on Hammond organ and guitar, and the drums are especially romping, and almost funky at times – but the real charm of the record comes from the lyrics, which are penned by poet Bogdan Loebel, and often sung by a trio of vocalists that includes bandleader Tadeusz Nalepa, plus an additional male and female voice. Singers step out on their own from track to track, always singing in Polish – and titles include "Dzy Znasz Ten Zwyczaj", "Pozwolcie Nam Zyc", "Anna", "Wyspa", "Te Bomby Leca Na Nasz Dom", and "Uwierz Mamo". LighthouseLighthouse/Suite Feeling/Peacing It All Together ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of albums by this very unique group – all brought together in one mighty nice package! First up is the self-titled Lighthouse album – the first record by Lighthouse – a strange band that's always incredibly hard to peg, but who have a sound that we always end up liking a lot! The group mix together folk rock styles with a touch of soul and funk – going for some nice grooves that build up from lots of drum work and airy vocal production, touched here by lots of horns, in a style that's a bit like Blood Sweat & Tears, but a lot lot cooler! This first album is something of a landmark in the jazz/rock vein – and titles include "Never Say Goodbye", "Follow The Stars", "Mountain Man", "Whatever Forever", "Marsha Marsha", and a great cover of "Eight Miles High". Suite Feeling is a record with a full, spacious sound – one that definitely lives up to the "suite feeling" you'd expect! The style here is even more sophisticated than on the group's debut – still a mix of jazzy horns and rockish rhythms, but fused together even more perfectly – but with a leanness that's a good contrast to some of the more overblown groups of the same generation! There's just the right balance here to allow some standout solos – on horns, natch, but also some sweet Hammond too – and a young Howard Shore is also in the group on alto sax, and handled some of the arrangements for the record. Titles include a great version of "A Day In The Life" – plus originals "Taking A Walk", "Could You Be Concerned", "Chest Fever", "Feel So Good", "Places On Faces Four Blue Carpet Traces", and "What Sense". Last up is Peacing It All Together – maybe the most complex album so far from Lighthouse – a set that begins with some great heavy drums, then rolls into the group's trademark blend of jazzy riffing, rocking rhythms, and soaring arrangements! There's a bit more Sunshine Pop in Lighthouse compared to some of their contemporaries in the jazz rock world at the start of the 70s – no attempts to be unnaturally soulful in the lyrics, nor too posturing either – and instead, there's almost a vocal gentleness that makes for a nice counterpoint to the full instrumental modes of the large horn-heavy ensemble. A few cuts get nice and funky, and titles include "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo/Let The Happiness Begin", "The Country Song", "Sausalito", "The Fiction Of Twenty Six Million", "On My Way To LA", and "Daughters & Sons". ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ VariousLove's Been Good To Me – The Songs Of Rod McKuen ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's Rod McKuen on the cover – looking all broken-down and lonely (it's no surprise that Rod wrote the songs for the Charlie Brown musical in the 60s!) – and the image is a illustration of the special vibe of this set, which looks at the special blue-tinged material that McKuen contributed to the world of 60s pop! The package follows nicely in the tradition of Ace's other "songwriter" compilations – but, given the special style of Rod, it's also got a bit of a different vibe too – maybe not as immediately upbeat or confident as some of the others, with that inward-turning quality that McKuen often brought to his own recordings too. The range of artists is surprisingly big – and there's some real heavyweights here who work true magic with Rod's songs – on titles that include "Kaleidoscope" by Nancy Sinatra, "Doesn't Anybody Know My Name" by Waylon Jennings, "A Single Woman" by Nina Simone, "Lonesome Cities" by Frank Sinatra, "If You Go Away" by Dusty Springfield, "This Is Our House" by Shelby Flint, "Hello Heartaches" by Barbara Kay, "Love's Been Good To Me" by Tom Jones, "The World I Used To Know" by Glen Campbell, "The Wind Of Change" by Petula Clark, "The Importance Of The Rose" by The Limelighters, "One By One" by Barry McGuire, and "Ain't You Glad You're Living Joe" by Michael Sarne. ✨✧ VariousWhen Sharpies Ruled – A Vicious Selection ... CD
Festival/Warner (Australia), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the Australian sharpies scene of the 70s – a post-mod, pre-punk underground that really helped give the nation its first strong voice in rock and roll! The sharpies took their name from the sharply-dressed style they used in the 60s – but by the time of this music, they were much leaner (and maybe meaner) – a rollicking force at public events, with the kind of energy that demanded superfueled sounds to keep them going! Much of this work is in the territory of UK pub rock – kind of back to basics material that shakes off any too-progressive elements, yet still has the technical sharpness of that generation – with some of the harder rock energy that fueled groups like Slade or AC/DC. Only a few of these acts were familiar to our ears – which makes the set a huge discovery, complete with very helpful notes that explain the subtleties of the scene. Titles include "Out Of Control" by Finch, "Time Shapes" by Coloured Balls, "Roll Daddy Roll" by Fat Daddy, "Riff In My Head" by Hush, "Horror Movie" by Skyhooks, "Hard Road" by Stevie Wright, "Jump In My Car" by Ted Mulry Gang, "Movin" by Fatty Lumpkin, "Remedy" by Rose Tattoo, "I Like It Both Ways" by Supernaut, and "Wildfire" by Rabbit. CD package also comes with a great book – filled with rare snapshots and photographs from the scene! CD

✨✧ Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... LP
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.98
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". Badfinger's early 70s win streak continues on Straight Up – a straight up classic set of tuneful 70s rock with big emotions and catchy songs – one that keeps just enough grit underneath those killer melodies! Titles include "Take It All", "Bably Blue", "Name Of The Game", "Perfection", "It's Over", "Sometimes" and more. BaroquesBaroques (mono colored vinyl pressing) (2017 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Chess/Sundazed, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the more unusual albums issued on the legendary Chess Records label in the 60s – not the usual jazz, blues, or soul the imprint was known for – but a full length set by a pretty raw combo from the Milwaukee scene! The Baroques are maybe more garagey than their name might imply – with a searing, gritty sound that verges into psych at times – but which still keeps things tight, short, and nicely focused. The group does feature some electric harpsichord in a few spots – although not as much as The Left Banke – and titles include "Mary Jane", "Iowa A Girl's Name", "In Silver Light", "Purple Day", "Boop", "Love In A Circle", "Bicycle", "There's Nothing Left To Do But Cry", and the pretty great-titled "Musical Tribute To The Oscar Mayer Weiner Wagon". Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". (Out Sound, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. Eugene ChadbourneLost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions ... CD
No Prestige/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99
Magnificent early work from Eugene Chadbourne – a set that was recorded on Christmas Day, 1977 – and only issued a decade later on cassette – but sounds that are every bit as mindblowing as the material on Chadbourne's first few albums! The music here is heavy on compositions from Thelonious Monk – and the set also features Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman tunes too – all reworked by Chadbourne with this incredible acoustic guitar style – very freewheeling, but still tied to the roots of jazz through a sense of melody – in ways that are maybe even more illustrative of his role in the scene than some of his other work. At one level, there's an acoustic guitar craft here that stretches back to the early blues recordings, but through a strong sense of avant freedom – ala Captain Beefheart – but Eugene's care with the tunes, mixed with his expressive phrasing, also put him in a space that's somewhere between the world of Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, and that of jazzman Barney Kessel, whose name he's holding in the poster on the cover. Titles include "5th Of Beethoven", "Reflections", "Off Minor", "San Francisco", "Hackensack", "Dewey Square", "Central Park West", "Brilliant Corners", and "Light Blue". Also includes a number of Chadbourne originals – and unissued tracks as well! (Jazz, Rock) CD

A punky funky no wave classic from James White – working here under the name of The Contortions, in a manner that's very similar to his Off White album! The tunes dip, turn, and kind of groove with a mad sort of art school energy – shifting easily between fast and frenetic playing, and some more "out" jazz styled riffing. ✨✧ Country Joe & The FishI Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vanguard/Craft, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". Curved AirAir Conditioning (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The debut album from Curved Air – a group who had a decidedly different take on the proggish styles of the start of the 70s! For one thing, the group took their name from a Terry Riley tune – already showing their higher consciousness when it came to music – and the lineup also features a young Francis Monkman and Darry Way – the former an artist who'd soon do some great sound library and soundtrack work on the UK scene, the latter a violinist who'd continue to find new spaces for his instrument in years to come! The use of Way's violin is a great addition to the sound here – as he carves out these lean lines next to the more flowing vocals of singer Sonja Kristina – who's got a style that's almost a proggish adaptation of folk modes from a few years before – while the rest of the group comes in with the more expected guitar, keyboards, and drums – but almost always at a level that remains fresh and distinct. Titles include "Hide & Seek", "It Happened Today", "Stretch", "Screw", "Blind Man", "Vivaldi", and "Situations". 2CD edition features lots of bonus material – including "Thinking On The Floor", "It Happened Today (single)", "Rob One (take 2)", "What Happens When You Blow Yourself Up" – and a number of live tracks from the John Peel show!
