VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! Amboy DukesMigration ... LP
Mainstream, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A really great moment for the young Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes – and a record that's so confident in its greatness, it begins the proceedings with a long instrumental, guitar-heavy jam – instead of any vocals! The Nuge really kicks it large on that cut – "Migration" – then things really heat up as the Dukes bring their pure power into play – that steamroller approach that made them a key force in moving things from psych to hard rock with records like this – although the record still has a few nice trippy touches too! Titles include "Good Natured Emma", "Loaded For Bear", "Migration", "For His Namesake", "Prodigal Man", and "Curb Your Elephant". LP, Vinyl record album

Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... CD
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". Antorcha (aka Las Antorchas)Antorcha (plus poster) ... LP
Vam (Mexico), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. By this point, the band was producing and promoting themselves – and put up a number of EPs that are compiled here for this great 11 song set: with "En El Jardin Del Eden", the English-sung "Grass" and "Going Down", "La Tierra", "Crisalida", "Bracero", "Mira", Quiero Vivir" and more. A rare country concept album – sort of a melancholy lament of a lost hometown, done with bright arrangements on par with his best sounding work of the 60s – with spoken recitations by Bobby. A major precursor to Willie Nelson's semi-narrative classics from the later 60s and 70s! (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". (Out Sound, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Rare 60s work from Brenner's Folk – a Spanish group who later changed their name to Pic Nic, and had a lot more success in that format! The style here is a bit folksy, but also recorded with a garagey style too – a nicely dark current that makes the male singer sound especially nice, although his duets with the group's female vocalist are pretty great too. Some tunes are more straightforward, while others have some trippier guitar – and titles include "Ho Se", "Clara Lluna", "Amor Perdut", and "Daurat Oest". – a swirling blend of guitar, organ, and vocals – all served up with an earthy pre-psych sort of style! ✨✧ ComusFirst Utterance (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. Titles include "Bitten", "The Prisoner", "Diana", "The Herald", "Song To Comus", and "Drip Drip". Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $19.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". Curved AirAir Conditioning (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The debut album from Curved Air – a group who had a decidedly different take on the proggish styles of the start of the 70s! For one thing, the group took their name from a Terry Riley tune – already showing their higher consciousness when it came to music – and the lineup also features a young Francis Monkman and Darry Way – the former an artist who'd soon do some great sound library and soundtrack work on the UK scene, the latter a violinist who'd continue to find new spaces for his instrument in years to come! The use of Way's violin is a great addition to the sound here – as he carves out these lean lines next to the more flowing vocals of singer Sonja Kristina – who's got a style that's almost a proggish adaptation of folk modes from a few years before – while the rest of the group comes in with the more expected guitar, keyboards, and drums – but almost always at a level that remains fresh and distinct. Titles include "Hide & Seek", "It Happened Today", "Stretch", "Screw", "Blind Man", "Vivaldi", and "Situations". 2CD edition features lots of bonus material – including "Thinking On The Floor", "It Happened Today (single)", "Rob One (take 2)", "What Happens When You Blow Yourself Up" – and a number of live tracks from the John Peel show! Peruvian psych folk from El Polen! This their early 70s album served as the soundtrack for a film of the same name that we know nothing about, but the music is really great! Chiming, largely acoustic instrumentation acoustic and twelve-string rhythm guitar, mandolin, cello, violin, drums, bongos, bamboo and Andean flutes. Flute & VoiceDrachenlieder (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1974/1975. Near Mint- (reissue)... $11.99
A remade version of an album recorded by this enigmatic German duo in the mid 70s, but never issued at the time – resurrected from its original tapes in the mid 90s, and augmented in ways that really open up the sound, while still keeping the core of the music intact! The instrumentation here is a bit more dynamic than on earlier Flute & Voice projects – and uses a bit of keyboards, electric guitars, and more acoustic strings with the two elements of the group's name – so much so, the music almost features more of those other aspects than just flute and voice! Things are relatively spare, and mostly instrumental throughout – kind of at a spot where prog moves into spaciousness, like the start of the Sky Records scene. Titles include "Dear President", "Drachenlied", "Ruth's Blues", "Wie Lange", "Zwolf Monde", and "Bajazzo". LP, Vinyl record album

Wah Wah (Spain), 1970/1973. Sealed Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Sublime sounds from a group who definitely offer up what they promise from their name, but also add in some great extra elements too! The use of flute and voice seems to start in a space that's inspired by Indian music, but also takes off into slightly progressive territory too – very spare, and acoustic throughout – with vocal sounds instead of lyrics, and more guitar and sitar than flute! The tunes build slowly, spaciously – almost with an improvised vibe – and the vocal lines are usually a bit more back in the mix than the guitar, and the two work together with a quality that's almost like improvised music, but with more of an advance structure overall. Great package includes the group's first album – plus their never-issued Hallo Rabbit record from the same time! LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderfully free-wheeling sounds from this hip German trio – maybe not one of the biggest groups of the Krautrock generation, but one who definitely earn their name with the music on this album! The set's got a long-spun approach to the tunes, which are all quite long – layers of keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, minimoog, Hammond organ, "Lunatron", and other electronics – mixed with some slight effects, and no other instrumentation at all – which makes for a very evocative, all-instrumental blend of keyboard sounds and styles – as they spin out beautifully in ways that really build a bridge to the sky! MGM/Omnivore, 1969/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.98
Ever wonder what happens when beatniks turn into hippies? They make albums like this one – a real treasure from the late 60s underground – and a set that showed the complete transformation of Allen Ginsberg at the time! The set's a real oddity – recorded after Ginsburg had hit new fame for his appearance at the Chicago 7 trial – but with a meditative quality that's very different than his more public presence as a yippie. The record features Ginsburg reading the works of William Blake and playing harmonium – while he receives instrumental backing by the likes of Don Cherry on trumpet, Bob Dorough on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums – usually in ways that are light, but still meaningful – and which really highlight Ginsburg's commitment to the project. Peter Orlovsky chimes in on a few tracks – and titles include "The Shepherd", "Little Black Boy", "London", "Ah Sun Flower", and "Laughing Song". CD features bonus tracks – "The Grey Monk (alt take)" and "Brothels Of Paris" – plus CD2 features more blake songs, most unissued – with titles that include "Holy Thursday", "A Nurses Song", "The Fly", "Spring", "The Divine Image", and "Infant Joy". Also includes three mantras done with backing by Arthur Russell on cello – "Padmasambhava Mantra", "Roghupati Raghava", and "Om Namah Shivaye". (Comedy/Spoken, Rock) CD

The landmark album from Hampton Grease Band – a group who were every bit as weird and wonderful as contemporaries like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa – and who work here with a similar sense of wit and freeplay in their instrumentation! Given that the group originally had some blues elements in their music, there's a definite link to Beefheart – and there's a dynamism here that almost feels as if they felt like they conquered blues rock at an early age, when they were working the southern scene – then felt free to play with its elements in whatever way they wanted! Bruce Hampton's vocals are wonderful – almost as weird and skittish as sounds that would later come from the art/punk underground at the end of the decade – and titles include "Halifax", "Maria", "Evans", "Hey Old Lady & Bert's Song", and "Hendon". Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $19.99 20.99
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Titles include "Taking Some Time On", "Dark Now My Sky", "The Iron Maiden", "Good Love Child", "Mother Dear", "The Sun Will Never Shine", and "When The World Was Woken". CD1 features lots of bonus tracks – including "Early Morning", "Mr Sunshine", "Eden Unobtainable", "Pools Of Blue", "Poor Wages", "Brother Thrush", and "I Can't Go On Without You". CD2 features a new stereo mix of the album and select bonus tracks! CD3 features rare BBC recordings and a very unusual demo track of "Dark Now My Sky". DVD features a 5.1 surround sound of the album and bonus tracks – plus visuals that include the 1968 Mr Sunshine short film. The box also includes a huge 68 page book – with new notes, unseen photos, and more – plus a replica of the poster ad for "Early Morning", postcards, facsimile press releases, and even a version of the 1970 Barclay James Harvest Orchestral Tour program! Ric CarteyOooh Eee – The Complete Ric Cartey ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 22.99
Ric Cartey may not be the biggest name in late 50s rockabilly – but man, does he sure sound great on this set – the first-ever collection to bring together Cartey's classic singles for RCA, plus a wealth of other rare 45s too! Cartey hails from Atlanta, and recorded a bit for that city's famous NRC indie – but despite the setting, Ric's got a great romping sound that's definitely all his own – maybe less hillbilly than some of his contemporaries of the period, and always ready to romp out with a hard-wailing groove! Production on most of these numbers is great – the kind of spare, stark, echoey vibe that makes already-great elements sound even cooler – and the whole package features a huge booklet of notes that tell the tale of Ric's overlooked career in music. Titles include "Crying Good Bye", "Mellow Down Easy", "Oooh Eee", "Poor Me", "Go On Fool", "Scratchin On My Screen", "To Love", "Leave Me Loose", "Born To Love One Woman", "I Wancha To Know", and "Let Me Tell You About Love" – and CD also features 11 more bonus tracks related to the collection, by Sonny James, The Jiv-A-Tones, Charlie Broome, Bobby Wilson, and Chuck Atha. CodeineFrigid Stars ... LP
Sub Pop/Numero, 1990. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
Slow-burning, though fully-enthralling rock from Codeine – the great and short-lived early 90s band that paved the way for countless groups to come – given due respect as the icons they are by The Numero Group! Codeine is properly cited as a major precursor to groups like Low and other so-called "slowcore" acts, but there's really nothing mellow about Codeine's sound. A narcotic haze hangs over the record, that's for sure – the band name is an apt one – but it's tense and dynamic vibe that's not at all sleepy! Includes "D", "Gravel Bed", "Pickup Song", "3 Angels", "New Year's", "Second Chance", "Cave-In", "Cigarette Machine", "Old Things" and "Pea". Numero's double vinyl version includes a full LP of bonus tracks: "Castle (Demo)", "Skeletons (Demo)", "3 Angels (Demo)", "Corner Store (Demo)", "Summer Dresses", "Pea (Acoustic)", "Second Chance" (Demo), "Pickup Song (Demo)", "Cave In (Demo)" and "Kitchen". This great 2LP version of the much-loved 1991 album features restored sound from the original masters, comes in a heavy duty gatefold, with an insert booklet of extensive notes and photos. Papa John CreachPapa John Creach ... LP
Grunt, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
One of the grooviest albums ever cut by Papa John Creach – a set that mixes his bluesy roots with some stoner funk and rock elements from the early 70s! Creach is on vocals and violin, and working here with a host of famous luminaries – including Grace Slick, Carlos Santana, Paul Kantner, and Jerry Garcia – each of whom definitely leave their mark on the record! Yet despite all these famous names, the record's got a pretty unified feel – and the best cuts have a nicely messed-up funk sound that we really like a lot – kind of in a Blue Thumb sort of blend, with a mix of rootsy elements and wilder electric ones and plenty of funky rhythms at the bottom. Titles include "Soul Fever", "String Jet Rock", "The Janitor Drives A Cadillac", "Plunk A Little Funk", and "Papa John's Down Home Blues". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Daisy ChainStraight Or Lame ... CD
United International/Sundazed, 1967. New Copy ... About June 22, 2018 (delayed)
Excellent work from The Daisy Chain – a very groovy all-girl combo from the Southern California scene of the late 60s – and one with a surprisingly dark sound as well! At some level, there's traces of regular post-folk psyche or sunshine pop in some of the group's work – but at another, there's a sense of darkness here that really surprises us – almost west coast echoes of the work that Nico did with the Velvet Underground, or a precursor to some of the trippier female work that would come out of the Bay Area scene a few years later. There's a counterpointed sense of moods at work here that really makes the album a great one – not nearly as nasty or kinky as you might guess from the reference that gives them their name, but still pretty moody nonetheless! Titles include "Final Hour", "Superfluous Daisy", "I'll Come Runnin", "All Because Of Him", "Zzotto", and "Run Spot Run". CD

You've heard Domenico before as part of the groundbreaking +2 trio with Kassin and Moreno Veloso – but this is only the second time the singer has worked on his own, and the first that he's given us his full name on the cover! That difference might mark a new sort of confidence in Domenico – a way of putting forth his careful songwriting genius with a bit more dexterity, which certainly gets a bit of assistance in the album's work by Sean O'Hagan and Kassin! If you've ever liked Domenico before, you'll totally love him here – and if this is your first time discovering his music, then get ready to go backwards – as the strength of this album will win over your ears, and send you searching for all the other wonderful music he's given us over the years. DonovanBarabajagal ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good ... $3.99
Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a beautiful blend of folk, psychedelic, and jazz-based modes – handled with simple charm throughout, and performed by a group that includes funky sound library genius Alan Hawkshaw on piano, and the great Harold McNair on flute! The title track "Barabajagal" is one of Donovan's most amazing tunes of all time – a funky little number that dances around with some great heavy drums, and which also features guitar by a young Jeff Beck! Bob DylanAnother Side of Bob Dylan ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Bob's fourth record, and close runner up to Freewheelin' as the masterpiece of this early stage of his career. While the overly arch Times They Are A Changin' pretty much stood as the cornerstone of classifiable folk rock at the time, Another Side is just that. Dense, elliptical, and downright surreal at times, with some of the protesty stuff that made the media so happy & hungry, but much more layered and poetic. Another side is also much more reverent of and indebted to the Harry Smith field recordings that Bob studied so hard, the stuff that finally caught on with the general public in the early 90s. Titles include "Spanish Harlem Incident", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ballad In Plain D", "Black Crow Blues", "I Don't Believe You", "Motorpsycho Nitemare", "To Ramona", "Chimes Of Freedom", "My Back Pages", and "I Shall Be Free No 10". Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good ... $5.99
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". DzambleKazdy Marzy Kazdy Sni ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1979. New Copy ... $9.99
Dzamble may not be a household name, but they're a tight fusion group from late 70s Poland – and one who also seem to have an ear for the best side of the AOR scene too! The group work here with a style that's nicely sharp, but never too smooth – tight, but fluid enough to let all the jazz currents come through in the music – especially the keyboards and tenor – while also making room for Polish language vocals on about half the album's tracks, delivered by a singer who's got a raspy style that's a nice contrast to the instrumentation. If you dig rare AOR or yacht rock, the set's a great illustration of the way those modes could flourish even in the farthest of scenes – and if you like tight 70s fusion, you'll also find something to love here too. Titles include "Przed Dniem", "Rzeko Plyn Szeroko", "Jak Zmienic Swiat", "Bezsennosc We Dwoje", and "Jeszcze W Sercu Radosc" – plus remakes of "Lady Love" and "Just The Way You Are". (Jazz, Rock) CD

Electric Light OrchestraElectric Light Orchestra (aka No Answer) ... LP
United Artists, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
A mindblowing first album from ELO – recorded back at a time when the group were taking the "Orchestra" in their name seriously, and when the group included Roy Wood! While Jeff Lynne's nascent pop genius is firmly in place already, the album's also awash in some of Wood's madder, folksier touches – making for a juxtaposition of styles that really amazing. Strings, guitars, oboes, and horns all come together in a post-folk mode that conjures up images of a crumbling England that stretches back to years before the birth of the British Empire! EyesArrival Of The Eyes ... CD
Mercury/Lion, Late 60s. New Copy ... $6.99
40 years later, The Eyes have finally arrived – given their full due in a beautifully done set that offers up their few released singles, lots of demos, and an album's worth of work done under the name of The Pupils! And why it's taken this long is a real mystery to us, because the work here is really amazing – ripping out with all the best raw early power of The Who, and in a similar space between mod and harder rocking camps of the time. A few moments get slightly more mainstream UK 60s – but overall, the work here has a rippingly hard garagey feel, almost proto-punk at moments – at least in the way that The Jam later absorbed the edges of the 60s. The Pupils material is from a tribute to the Rolling Stones album – but is still largely in the style of the main Eyes tracks – and the CD features 28 numbers that include "My Degeneration", "When The Night Falls", "I'm Rowed Out", "Please Don't Cry", "Man With Money", "Radio London", "If You Need Me", "The Last Time", and "Play With Fire". EM (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99
Fantastic percussion pieces from this ultra-cool New Zealand ensemble of the 70s – a group who take their name and inspiration from the Scratch Orchestra of Cornelius Cardew – but who also work in a more intimate setting, with lots of instruments of their own creation – with a vibe that sometimes reminds us of the music of Harry Party! Given the smallness of the NZ scene at the time, these guys were less of a high art ensemble, than the kind of creative criss-crossing of big ideas and grass roots expression – similar to that moment when the art and punk worlds worked together so strongly in late 70s New York. And the sound here would be right at home alongside some of the more creative artists from the Kitchen scene – as the group play, drum, and blow themselves through a wonderful array of rhythmic sounds! Acme/Lion, 1970s. New Copy ... $6.99
Early 70s space rock from Golem – epically paced, trippy, expertly done wigged out instrumental rock that was purportedly laid down by heavies from the soon-to-be legendary krautrock scene working pseudonymously after hours in the studio! The album's a bit of an enigma – a set that's become famous over the years for its quality, but shrouded in enough mystery that some have doubted its story – although overall, the music here feels like the best early 70s space rock on labels like Brain or Egg – with lots of layers of keyboards and guitars over building drums and basslines. Interestingly, the producer as credited as Genius P Orridge for Pyramid Records, strangely similar to another name, wouldn't ya say? Titles include "Orion Awakes", "Stellar Launch", "Godhead Dance", "Jupiter & Beyond", and "The Returning". CD

Sublime girl group sounds from the great Lee Hazlewood – the complete recordings of Honey Ltd – an obscure Hazlewood project from the end of the 60s! The style here combines all the depths of Lee's own music with some of the sweeter Sunshine Pop sounds you'd expect from the cover – a really unique mix that has these moodier moments coming forth at times that really surprise us – and which takes the music way way past that of any of the girls' hipper contemporaries – especially the similarly-named Honeys! The harmonies are incredible – definitely rooted in jazz, with a complexity that goes way past pop – and in a way, the group remind us a bit of the incredible Third Wave group who recorded for MPS around the same time – although these gals definitely get a more sinister sound from Lee's help in the studio. Songs are mostly originals by the group – penned with some very compelling lyrics – and the album features great arrangements from Ian Frebairn Smith, who really does a great job of mixing the baroque with the groovy! The set features the full rare album by the quartet, plus two single tracks, and some unreleased cuts as well – titles that include "The Warrior", "Silk N Honey", "Come Down", "For Your Mind", "I've Got Your Mind", "Tomorrow Your Heart", "Eli's Coming", "I'm So Glad", "Love The Devil (backing track)", and "Silver Threads & Golden Needles". Ramsey's got a voice, style and charisma that stands as firm as many of the most legendary players of the 50s Sun Records scene and beyond – he even recorded at Sun, some of the soon-to-be heavies like Roy Orbison, The Jordanaires, and a bunch of legendary session players' names appear in the credits – but it's Ramsey who shines on these recordings! The set includes a few later recordings in more of a 60s-onward honky tonk style, too, and he thrives in that mode as well! Includes "The Cat Bug Bit", "Don't Tease", "Betty", "Rock The Bop", "Bluesday", "Everyday I Love You Just A Little Bit More", "Knock On Wood", "Tennessee Saturday Night", "But What'Cha Gonna Do", "My Thoughts Always Turn To You", "Dixie Rose", "If I'm Blue", "Doin' Hard Time", "Love Be Strong", "Red Bobby Sox", "Nine Little Teardrops" and more. 32 tracks in all! KinksKink Kontroversy ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good+ ... $44.99
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo tri-color steamboat label pressing. Cover has a name in pen & light wear.)

KnackTime Waits For No One – The Complete Recordings ... CD
Capitol/Now Sounds (UK), 1966/1967. Used ... $14.99
Not the power pop phenom Knack of "My Sharona" fame – and not the mid 60s UK Knack. This is the mid 60s Sunset Strip Knack – and one of at least 3 great band to have that name that we've been hipped to so far! This particular Knack was fairly short-lived. They signed with Capitol and released 4 strong singles back in the day – and all 8 of those sides are on this CD from Now Sounds UK – along with 5 previously unreleased tunes. It's strong, hooky Cali-bred take on post Brit Invasion grooves – well worth the discovery! Titles include "Time Waits For No One", "I'm Aware", "Pretty Daisy", "Softly, Softly", "The Spell", "Freedom Now", "The Girl With The Dark Brown Eyes", "Once Upon A Cheek", "No Show Today", "Merry Go Round" and more. Los BravosBlack Is Black – The Anthology 1966 to 1969 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
The biggest collection of work we've ever seen from Los Bravos – a group who broke big around the world with the famous title hit, but who also had a heck of a lot more to offer, too! Los Bravos hail from Spain, but they quickly were picked up and produced by the British arm of Decca – which gives their music a cool mix of modes – part of the punch of 60s Britpop, but also dosed with maybe a bit more sense of drama inherited from their Spanish, roots – with a blend that's quite unique, especially as the set moves on! There's a whopping 60 tracks in all – way more than we'd ever heard by Los Bravos – and most lyrics are in English, with an increasingly groovy vibe as the set moves on – almost the same kind of west coast world as The Monkees in their best Boyce & Hart mode, but with some bouncy Brill Building currents too. The booklet is overflowing with notes on the group – and titles include "Black Is Black", "Show Me", "I've Been Hearing Things", "Deeper Roots", "She's My Girl", "Dime Donde Estoy", "If I Were A River", "Live Girl", "Individuality", "Dirty Street", "Two People In Me", "Como Superman", "Make It Last", "Baby Believe Me", "I Don't Care", "Recopilacion", "Trapped", "I Want A Name", "She Believes In Me", "Come When I Call", and "You'll Never Get The Chance Again".
